First up, I’d like to thank everybody who came out to Brothers Grim yesterday. We had 46 guys compete for an Unlimited Lotus, but at the end of the day, only Shawn Griffiths's Peanut Oath stood above the rest.
The Complete Metagame Breakdown:
Mana Drains
U/R Control: 1 Jace Control: 9 4C Tezzeret: 1 Landstill: 2 Elephant Oath: 4 Keeper: 1 Bomberman: 2
Workshops
Espresso Stax: 9 Mono-Red Shops: 1 Two Card Monte: 1 MUD Aggro: 1
Null Rods
Noble Fish: 3 U/B Fae: 1
Bazaars
Dredge: 6
Rituals/Combo
Bob TPS: 1 Belcher: 1 Dark Times: 1 TPS: 1
I have called the U/B/G/R Jace deck that won Champs Jace Control. It is a misnomer to call it Tezzeret, as there are no Tezzerets to be found in either main or board. Additionally the deck runs three Jace, the Mind Sculptor in the main, and I don’t remember Tezzeret decks consistently running more than two Tezzerets. Jace Control and Espresso Stax both comprised nearly 20% of the field. The Drain pillar comprised more than 43% of the metagame as a whole. For the time being, it seems as though blue pilots have found their answer to MUD, and the various (traditional) Shop strategies. While Shops made up 26% of the field, only Shop Combo (Two Card Monte) made the top 8. Traditional Shop Aggro and Shop Prison strategies were shut out, though they were plentiful at the event. Additionally, Dredge, which has been a popular metagame choice in the Shop capital of the world, was shut out of the top 8.
Top 8 Pairings and Results:
Josh Jacobson vs. Asa Fritz – Jacobson wins David Reitnauer vs. Chris Pikula – Reitnauer wins Shawn Griffiths vs. Justin Bova – Griffiths wins Ryan Fisher vs. Shawn Anthony – Fisher wins
Top 4 Pairings and Results:
Josh Jacobson vs. David Reitnauer – Jacobson wins Shawn Griffiths vs. Ryan Fisher – Griffiths wins
Finals:
Shawn Griffiths vs. Josh Jacobson – Griffiths wins
Congratulations to Shawn Griffiths, Josh Jacobson, and all of our top 8 competitors. By winning the event, Shawn won himself an option to purchase a round one bye at Waterbury XIV.

9th Place Prize
The 9th place prize was not as great as the last few months, still, I’m sure that Jon Byer will enjoy has 9 Trained Orgg’s. Congratulations Jon!
Sportsmanship Prize
The Sportsmanship prize of a Scalding Tarn is to be awarded to Andrew Brady. Congratulations Andrew!
Random Wolf Shirt
Due to an error on my part, we were wolf shirt-less on the day. The wolf shirt prize, which I am now only going to give away at Lotus events, will be given away at the next N.Y.S.E. event instead. I am aiming for October 23rd. As soon as I have confirmation on the date, I will put the event up on the event calendar.
In the end, I’d like to say thanks to Dave, Frank, Gil and all the Brothers Grim staff, to our judge, Brian Paskoff, and to all our competitors. It was a great day for Vintage on Long Island, and I hope to see everyone again at N.Y.S.E. XII.

It's Jon Byer, not Justin. And yes, I'm thrilled with them, especially considering there was also a Butcher Orgg thrown in.

Heh, it looks like two of the three Noble Fish pilots made Top 8. The one who didn't? Good 'ol "Al Punto" here. I guess I'll go back to registering for these events with my real name.
I started out 2-0, then won game 1 against Mr. Pikula in round 3 despite a mull to four, then the wheels fell off. I finished 2-4. Bleh.

Nick, O.K., so the deck I played was innovated by Mr. Matt Elias, and all credit for the deck should go to him, but c'mon... neither my wonderful title or "deck designer" get mentioned?? I'm kinda hurt. That aside, thank you for hosting such a wonderful event!

I'm really glad to see the deck is still doing well even if it is seeing limited play. It won the 24-person late-night event at Gen Con also. Very, very cool. Congrats on your top 4!

I'm new to all of this but I assume it an accumulative total if points in all events attended. I'm only assuming this because I played in the last lotus event and had 3 wins, and now I'm on that chart at 9 points. In a standard event you get 3 points fir a win and 1 for a draw. This helps with initial parings and placement. Tie breaks go too opponents win percentages.
Hope that helped.

There is probably additional points awarded to top eight based on placement.

The Player of the Year race is a points race that runs from 1/23 through the final N.Y.S.E tournament of 2010. Only points from major N.Y.S.E. events (not N.Y.S.E. Lites or weekly tournaments at Mark's Comics) count towards the standings. 3 points are awarded for a win, 1 point is awarded for a draw.
This is the additional bonus given to the top 8:
1st - 12 points 2nd - 9 points 3rd/4th - 6 points 5th-8th - 3 points
Thus if a player has 15 points at the end of the Swiss standings, and this player wins the event, the player would get an additional 12 points for a grand total of 27 points on the day.
The winner of the N.Y.S.E. Player of the Year race gets free entry into all major (not N.Y.S.E. Lite or weekly Vintage touranments) N.Y.S.E events for 2011. I'm working on a trophy as well.

Nick thanks for hosting TWO fantastic events in a row. I really like the New York Vintage community and I hope to make it up to more of your events this fall, so I hope to see everyone around. Also, uh, my apologies to the gentlemen from whom I borrowed 3x Spell Pierce, as they are still in my deck and I noticed it when I got home. Whoops. Also, it was grand to finally meet the infamous Nick Coss.
Open wager: if anyone can top 8 with a deck running Eager Cadet x4 at the next NYSE event, I will eat my hat.
I'd also love to see if anyone else will down to Burning Wish ---> Lava Spike
Thanks everyone for letting me see such a great community! Hope to see more of everyone.

I'd also love to see if anyone else will down to Burning Wish ---> Lava Spike
I believe it was (Top Deck)Time Twister----->Trinket Mage (tap out)-----> Black Lotus (tripple red)-----> Burning Wish -----> Lava Spike Ftw.

All I need to know is that I have never gone on tilt that fast, that early in a tourney ever. And that's not even the worst tilt I've ever been on.
Again, Nick, thanks for running the event and sorry for the way I left it.
