This is a tournament report and deck discussion for a build of Dreadstill that my teammates and I have been developing for a while. It may be of interest to you, especially if you plan to attend the upcoming SCG 5K this weekend.

Mr Shay, as always, this was a tremendous read. Although I knew all this stuff already. I do hope you'll find some time to write more as I always enjoy reading your posts and articles.

I was glad to see your name on this article in my RSS reader, can't wait to read more.  As a point of constructive criticism, I felt that the article lacked a strong 'claim'.  It was very entertaining to read about your exploits with Dreadstill, but I think adding a sentence to say "This deck is really good, you should play it." would have focused your readers' attention, and probably generated more discussion.

Vintage is a lovely format, it's too bad so few people can play because the supply of power is so small.

Chess really changed when they decided to stop making Queens and Bishops.  I'm just glad I got my copies before the prices went crazy.

Well, Starcity is apparently out of Peacekeepers so that should tell you something.

Rich, please write about Strategic Planning next, I have a couple I'd like to move. Thanks.

Do you ever feel you're not getting RoI on CB because of lack of 3s and 4s in the curve?

Do you ever feel you're not getting RoI on CB because of lack of 3s and 4s in the curve?

In general, this deck isn't as focused on CB as other CB/Top decks.  If one's goal is to play a CB/Top soft lock and prevent the opponent from resolving anything meaningful for the rest of the game, then this deck is not prepared to do that too well.  However, if one's goal is to play CB/Top as a one-sided Chalice for 1, and use the other cards in the deck to handle whatever else the opponent chooses to play, then it functions perfectly fine.  Sure there are sometimes we see a Trinket Mage or Jace off CB/Top, but it is true that this deck does not abuse CB/Top like other decks do.

The main reason is that the deck is equipped with a combo.  In many instances, the best answer to anything the opponent can produce is often to just play a 12/12.  Having a CB/Top protect the 12/12 from cards like Path or Plow brings the battle to our own terms, as opposed to needing to stop the opponent's spells.

Another reason is that this deck has a considerable portion of mana denial.  Stifle and Wasteland go a long way towards preventing the opponent from establishing the appropriate mana base to cast his or her 3/4 mana spells.  Even a card like EE can trip the opponent by hitting cards like Hierarch or artifact acceleration.  There is also Daze which can really punish those expensive spells.

Lastly, after boarding there are more factors at play.  Between 3 Trinket Mage, 2 Perish, and 3 Peacekeeper there are a lot more 3 drops that can enter the deck to shut off problematic cards like Grip and Knight of the Reliquary.  In fact, not only are they great to reveal with a CB but they also reactively answer most any 3 drop the opponent can produce.  The other SB possibility is Spell Pierce, which is not going to flip off CB to stop any 4 drops but it can certainly halt the opponent from playing his Natural Order, Jace, or Aluren.

In short, the CB/Top is not as powerful as it is in other focused CB/Top decks, but this is because Dreadstill focuses more on drawing cards and solving problems that way.  I still feel that CB/Top is worth playing though, despite its weaknesses against Aether Vial strategies.

Running Jace means not running more than two Dazes, since those cards don't synergize very well.

Can someone explain the details of this statement?

Thanks

Jace costs 4 mana. Daze sets you back a turn on lands.
