Results can be found here: http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/eventcoverage/gencon12/welcome#8

I'm posting these to make it easier for those who didn't have a chance to follow the GenCon thread as it happened, and also to make Tobi's life easier (love Morphling.de) All pics from WOTC official coverage. Smile My reports have pics, even if I'm not there. Smile

Also, to force BC to give us a really awesome tourney report. (or force Marc Langira to write one for us!). Or anyone else at the tourney, for that matter. We LOVE reports!

Quote
Congratulations to Marc Lanigra, the winner of the 2012 Vintage Championship here at Gen Con! Lanigra won a hard-fought match in three games when he was able to keep Blaine Christiansen's Phyrexian Revokers at bay.

In the final game, Lanigra had a great start, with a land, a Black Lotus, and Jace the Mind Sculptor. After Jace's pseudo-Brainstorm gave Lanigra a Mox Jet and a Voltaic Key, he was looking good. But Christiansen had two Phyrexian Revokers to deal with Jace and the Voltaic Key.

One of the Revokers got killed by an Ingot Chewer (prompting Lanigra to announce, "Evoke your Revoker"), but it was replaced by another. A few turns of sparringave Lanigra the time he needed to draw Hurkyl's Recall and cast it at the end of Christiansen's turn. Then on Lanigra's turn, he drew Time Vault, which combines very nicely with the Voltaic Key. One handshake later, Marc Lanigra had won!

Sweet, Michael Gouthro is one of the friendliest Canadian players I've had a chance to play against, glad to see he could bring Bomberman in the top 4. I love the Cavern of Soul tech.

Congrats BC and congrats on taking a MUD list with some true innovation in the card choices (buried ruin!? ratchet bomb!? triskellion!?) all the way to 2nd. You should come up with a unique name and a primer for this brew since I've only seen you rock a list like this.

4x Shop
2x Dredge

...sounds like a wonderful diverse format with lots of interaction ... lol

Seriously, did people forget their dredge-hate and trygon predators at home and the traders were sold Out? Wasn't it likely that a sanctioned vintage tournament in Proxy-Land will be haunted by dredge? Need to watch coverage...

Congrats non the less to the new United States Vintage Champion (Sorry but a <200 peeps, 95% US citicens, Fantasy Convention side Event called "World Championship" is a joke compared to BoM). Lightning Bolt + snapcaster took the trophy

Edit: wow only 76 players in the Last round? 186 registered

I know, but that doesn't affect my critic that a tournament which is smaller than Eurovino or BoM wirh less nationalities present (mostly because always held in the US) can seriously considered "World championship".

Try that with "Worlds" or "Pro Tours": everyone pays for their flights and Hotels themself and the Events are always in the US. Would have the same effect.

the event might be a side event at a fantasy convention, but it's THE Vintage World Championships that WOTC says is the place/time/venue for the title to be fought over.

Sure, the prize support for 2nd-32 is crap, but people do come to it to be crowned Vintage World Champ.

If BoM called their tourney, at some point, "Vintage Chapionships!" or "World Vintage Championships" in a once a year event (in Europe), then we would definately respect that (since WOTC doesn't do much to support Vintage as a format).

But we in the states probably wouldn't talk shit about it being "European, and less significant".

Congrats to the winner, and to BC who came in second, and also a big congrats to VINTAGE for having 189 people play. That's like 80% more than the last few years, yes?

Actually that's exactly that happens containing any discussion about Legacy in context of SCG tournaments vs. Worldwide results on TheSource and other sites.

Wizards is the officiating body for Vintage Magic, and as such, they get to call their tournaments whatever they want.  You're welcome to claim that a win at Eurovino, or the Bazaar of Moxen is more significant than a win at Vintage Championships, but it won't ever come with the title that Wizards grants and acknowledges.  Nothing that we say or do here will change this; if you feel so strongly about this, complain to Wizards.

Also, we had 186 players, not 76.

I'm also always skeptical of results from Vintage Worlds for the same reason. With no proxies I have to imagine that the % of people playing suboptimal garbage is higher than at, say, a Waterbury tournament.

There were additional Vintage events that were run on the day, I know that many people dropped to play in a 4pm event.

Still, I don't understand how this is indicative of an inferior event.  People who were dead decided to drop and play in other events.  If anything, the lack of players in the last round should be a good thing, as it showed that there were enough other things of interest to warrant dropping, and not staying in.

The new Vintage Champ is German, FYI.

As the BOM winner was this year. German and Spanish players dominate the European vintage scene for some years now. To win a title in the US is a nice addition though Wink

2 of those 3 are incorrect.  We podcasted onsite about our deck choices.  Kevin also interviewed the winner. Should be up by the end of the week.

I contend that it does.

If it is what Matriano played and Soly played (and did with moderate success at the event), I want to know why he lost.

I got a media badge for GenCon this year care of Eternal Central, and we will be posting a shitload of information for all of the Eternal tournaments that were held. I have ALL of the decklists for both the Vintage prelims, Legacy prelim, Legacy Champs, and am working on getting the Vintage Champs lists (they were taken to a hotel room and are hopefully being sent to me via snail mail).

We will be posting a lot of decklists beyond Top 8 of the Champs events, and will be doing full metagame breakdowns, etc. for each tournament. BAOM!

I actually ended up 0-4 drop.  Smile  I played on for the fun -- and by fun I mean beatings...

I played Soly's RUG Delver and I played against Esper Snapcaster Control, Intuition Tendrils, Strix, Strix.

It would be impossible for me to relate the laundry list of bad beats I took in the games I played without sounding like I was complaining about how good my opponent's cards were compared to how unfortunate I was.  So I won't.  I don't think it was possible for me to win any of the games I lost with the hands I kept (about half of which were 6 -- which is fine for a deck that plays 19 mana sources), without mulliganing and having an entirely different hand, but I feel like my keeps were very reasonable and playable.

After having played the deck quite a bit before the tournament and having played it in the tournament I think that it wasn't the best option available -- but hindsight is always 20/20.  Although i think that it is a much better deck than the result that I ended up with.  Ultimately, I think it is a solid Tier 1.5 deck, that at times may be really well positioned, although I don't think champs was one of these moments.  I discuss this topic at length in my next article.

I would like to thank Soly for shipping me the list and sharing his insights about playing it with me before the event.

Brian seems to be the victim of a strong desire to play Legacy cards in a Vintage tournament.
