Also, not sure I see how Dredge has faded in any way. It seems as strong as ever to me. As evidence, just from November and December... 11/10/12 - Win, 41 players http://morphling.de/top8decks.php?id=167012/1/12, 2nd place, 23 players http://morphling.de/top8decks.php?id=166712/1/12, 2nd place, 20 players http://morphling.de/top8decks.php?id=166811/25/12, 2nd place, 27 players http://morphling.de/top8decks.php?id=167412/16/12, 3rd place, 23 players http://morphling.de/top8decks.php?id=167812/30/12, 2nd place, 61 players http://morphling.de/top8decks.php?id=1683Landstill and RUG, agree, they seem to be cooling off. I'm surprised you guys didn't talk more about Bomberman, which really came on in the 2nd half of the year. It also would've been cool to hear more about the variances between Shop decks and how the deck transitioned over the course of the year. But, overall, good podcast.

Nice podcast, from my view I'd have to say that Bomberman is the best deck of the year, it top 8'd more tournaments around here than any other deck. It seems like a very powerful deck with answers to almost everything.

For the record, Cagebreaker Dredge was created by and named by me Ah, noted. Still, Dredge hasn't quite performed as well as it did the first half of the year -- since it won several major events. Your listed good tournament results, but with one exception, not victories. Nice podcast, from my view I'd have to say that Bomberman is the best deck of the year, it top 8'd more tournaments around here than any other deck. It seems like a very powerful deck with answers to almost everything.
What about Workshops performance in New York or the Vintage Champs?

If I could pick 2 decks, the second deck would have to be Martello. Martello has been a house for months, but specifically Justin Kohler's UW Bomberman list, top 8's almost every tournament he plays in with it, I think there was a grand total of like 3 tournaments he didn't top 8 with it, and he plays in many tournaments. And to note, he doesn't change his list much at all, if at all.

Thanks for this, it made getting through a particularly difficult workout all the more enjoyable.
My unsolicited Moxie nominations:
Card of the year: Lightning Bolt
I know the category was best NEW card, but that's always gonna be a pretty narrow pool to choose from for Vintage. Anyway, it's not like Bolt has ever been absent from Vintage, but it certainly waned at some point. I think it's at the highest value it has ever been right now, there's just nothing more flexible than killing Bob, Jace, or Lodestone for one mana. Being able to kill random aggro creatures like Magus of the Moon or Thalia in the earlier rounds of an event is a nice bonus too, and there's always the possibility for a quick 8 damage finish to a game with Snapcaster recurring a Bolt.
Deck of the year: Bomberman
As others have said, it just feels like it has game in every matchup. I don't think this archetype will be going anywhere for a long time.
Storyline of the year: The demise of Gush
Gush is in a major downswing right now, especially when compared to how prominent it was in the Summer of 2011.

Great job on the podcast gentlemen. I'm liking the format more each time.
Deck of the year is Dredge with some that are very close. I could not agree more with Kevin about the shifting and yet still balanced metegame this year. I really have enjoyed seeing the resurgence of previously outdated decks rise into serious competitiveness. I think that includes decks like Dredge, Bomberman, Storm, and creature-based strategies.

Really entertaining and interesting. Worth the time @ 101%. It´s a pity we don´t get more Vintage articles/podcasts/forum discussion going on more often.
Some of the points mentioned prove with facts that Vintage is en ever evolving creature. However, a looooooot of people still believe the format is at a crossroad where it does not move and everyone is still playing the same decklists/cards/brokenness and that Forum activity is pretty dead...A rather poor and superficial approach and shows total lack of understanding of the format.
Thanks to you guys @ SMIP Podcasts for keeping the topic going whilst always showing a great love for Vintage.
Awesome Job!

Thanks guys. The point about Gush is interesting. Delver is a Gush deck, though, but I agree it's definitely a down year for Gush compared to 2011.

My gut reaction for deck of the year is bomberman. But the more I think about it, im not as sure. Outside of Kohler and myself, not many people are even playing bomberman, furthermore we arent even playing the same list (uw vs uwb).
As far as story of the year I would take it one step further then the demise of gush and say the demise of broken blue. Gush, mystical, scroll, tinker, vault+key, and BRAINSTORM Have for the most part fallen out of flavor with a lot of blue pilots, and that is just crazy. Hell, Brian Demars wrote an article about blightsteel beeing the devil and Nick Detwiler wanted blightsteel banned at the end of 2011 and now people dont even play it.

The reason is because everyone has over-adapted to BSC, making it more of a liability than an asset. I don't agree about the demise of big blue, it's simply shifted gears. Brainstorm is still absurd.

I understand the reason, just saying its an interesting story for 2012. (Don't actually understand the reason on brainstorm outside of landstill)
