Serious Vintage Episode 12 highlights a special event in the Vintage Magic the Gathering realm: the TwaunSerious Invitational. Unfortunately Twaun himself (@Twaun007 on Twitter) couldn’t join us because his apartment is from the 1850s and doesn’t include Internet (does include diphtheria!), but we did get de facto second-in-command Jerry Yang (@yangtrolls) to help us talk about the event and the mighty rivers of scotch that flowed there. Also, Geoff (@ThallidTosser) got interviews with each player of the TwaunSerious event, so enjoy listening to those.

Here’s the timestamped table of contents for your listening ease and enjoyment.

0:00:24 – Jerry Yang, Vintage Gentleman
0:00:44 – The TwaunSerious Invitational
0:27:44 – Eating and Drinking TwaunSeriously
0:38:34 – Tournament Interviews
1:28:16 – Outro
Total runtime: 1:28:48

Something I am particularly looking to get out of this episode from listeners is feedback on the interviews. Did you like them? Do you want to hear more of them? Respond here, tweet us, or send us an email at SeriousVintagePodcast@gmail.com if you want to be discreet.

RE: Interview Feedback

I enjoyed the content of the interviews.  What a given player was playing and why, their predictions of the meta-game, food and drink choices (a running theme of the show), and highlights/lowlights of the tournament so far.  As a new player getting into the format it was helpful to hear why decks were chosen or how some key interactions may have happened.  While I do not think I will ever choose to play Belcher because, "it is the only deck I can pilot while drunk."  It sure was entertaining to hear as a reason for playing the archetype.  Interviewing the players at different times in the event was a little disjointed, but there was a warning up front about it, so thanks for the heads up.

Also, I have a little constructive criticism about the audio.  The background sound was a little distracting at times during the interviews, if there is a way to dampen the ambient noise for future player interviews it would be appreciated.  The other point is the sensor beep, it is a harsh contrast to the conversation.  Having it be less jarring, or not as loud would be preferred.

All that said, I really enjoy the content you guys are creating.  Keep up the good work.

Yes, it was difficult to control the background noise because Twaun's Subterranean Dubstep Den was very loud and did not have any soundproof areas. We ended up doing the interviews out in the stairwell, which created an interesting audio effect. The only exception was Sam's interview, which occurred outside and sounds like we're about to get arrested.

I think that in the future, knowing that we may plan to do this again, we may prepare a better place for the hot seat ahead of time.

On the subject of the censor beep, that's something I've been working on as well. It's changed a bit in volume and frequency over time, and it's good to know that I should tweak it some more.

Thanks for listening and your feedback!

Hi guys,
Long time listener first time caller ..... okay both those statements are lies due to the fact you've only been podcasting for a year and I've posted comments several times before.

Interviews - I agree with the background noise and if people could articulate a little better who they are for those of us who're uninformed or new to the game and how we might know them (TMD handles said clearly and slowly would help, several said them but I had to rewind to rehear them).

Volume levels - Are you guys recording via skype or all in the same room? I find the levels all over the show, I listen in the car and find myself having to volume up and down a lot depending on who's talking? Maybe if you're recording the same room can you record individual microphones separately and then balance the levels in post? If you're not using individual mic's can I suggest you move to them?

Legend rule - I'm guessing you recorded this before the legend rule got posted, when shall we expect a podcast covering that?
