Power, Power EverywhereSo the amazing Prospero has announced that the NYSE Open is happening again this June. So in the interest of tradition, Pandemonium will again be hosting a qualifier event! What does that mean? Well that means that in addition to whatever amazing prize support we can already cook up, you will also be playing for paid entry into the biggest power events this side of the pond. SO...HOW DO YOU PLAY?!?! WHERE:Pandemonium Books and Games 4 Pleasant Street Cambridge, MA 02139 (617) 547-3721 WHEN:Saturday April 19th The event begins at 12pm. Registration starts at 11:00. WHAT:Main Vintage Event! $30 entry fee10 Proxy free with Entry fee with the option to buy 5 additional proxies for $1 each Decklists required. PRIZES!Guaranteed!Ok so here's the deal with this event. I know sometimes playing for a mox can be really exciting, but based on some of the feedback I've gotten, people really want to see some more vintage staples and a wider distribution of prize support. With that in mind here's what we're going to do. Rather than guarantee us a singular piece of power, the store as guaranteed $1000 store credit to the prize pool plus the obvious entry into the NYSE II. That 1K will only grow the more people attend. Now I know what you're thinking....man credit tournaments are so boring...and what can I do with that credit anyway. Well Pandemonium has been very good at picking up all of the cards that you've said you want so they are stock full of the following: Tarmogoyfs Dark Confidants Dual Lands Force of Wills Fetch Lands Wastelands Etc, Etc, Etc, you get the idea. Your credit will not go to waste. 1st Paid entry to the NYSE Open II (Plus Addition credit from prize pool)
PROXY RULES:Acceptable Proxy Methods:1. Full Card Printed on Card Stock. (ie: you blanked a normal magic card and then ran it through a printer.) 2. Clearly Hand written fully blank card. (ie: You blanked a normal magic card and then neatly hand wrote all relevant information on it.) 3. Relevant Information neatly written on a basic land with Sharpie
**Note: Relevant Information is defined as follows:1. Card Name 2. Mana Cost 3. Card type 4. Full card text or a reasonable abbreviation 5. Power/Toughness/Loyalty where applicable
Failure to provide adequate proxies will result in a warning or game loss should a judge need to be called. I hate to be so harsh on this, but a lot of players put a lot of time and effort into making their decks and expect some effort from their opponents. If you have any questions regarding your proxies please approach myself or one of the other organizers or judges and have us check them before the tournament starts. Linked to calendar. -Godder

Alright folks. We're trying something new with this one. You tell me what you want to see for first place, or prizes in general. And I will negotiate with the store to make it happen.

I think I will have one friend with me for this one. Looking forward to it!
Is anyone going to the Modern Grand Prix Trial in Norwood the next day (4/20)? It's at 'On the Stack Games'. If so, is there space for two more to get a ride there? Thanks! (Also, I'm not that familiar with Boston public transportation, but it looks like the Franklin train line has a stop near that store, is that right?)

Vintage is a lovely format, it's too bad so few people can play because the supply of power is so small.
Chess really changed when they decided to stop making Queens and Bishops. I'm just glad I got my copies before the prices went crazy.

I'm not familiar with the Franklin Train line. If it's the Commuter Rail, which it likely is, that will bring you in to North or South Station and from there you can take the red line to the store. It's the Central Sq T stop.

Who is taking this down? I'm ready to ride the 0-2 drop train!
Also, would people want things like drains/duals over a single Mox? There are quite a few options, but nothing set in stone yet. Should it be straight up Vintage playables or Legacy legal cards to maybe bring in that crowd?

There is a commuter rail stop (Norwood Central) that is <5 min walk to the store as well as various bus lines. I believe the buses go to Forest Hills, but I'm not 100% on that.

My other main hobby, apart from Magic, is to write Science Fiction. However, I've been shirking that hobby for several months, taking any excuse not to write (including, but not limited to: "but it's ski season" and "writing is hard"). I decided that I would use Magic as a motivator, and I've tried to rededicate myself to writing by requiring myself to write 10,000 words in order to allow myself to play in a tournament. As of this morning I am 6,500+ words in to the 10K I need to attend Saturday's event, and I'm on pace. I'm very excited to play some Vintage, and I'm glad that so far it's helped me be motivated to write. I'm not going to the trial, but I do know the store and play there occasionally. There is a commuter rail stop (Norwood Central) that is <5 min walk to the store as well as various bus lines. I believe the buses go to Forest Hills, but I'm not 100% on that.
Thanks for the help, but, according to what I said above I'd need to write 20,000 words to attend both tournaments, and that's not gonna happen in such a short time frame. Vintage tourney >>>> Modern tourney. Also, I have a FrEaster to attend on Sunday anyway (please don't hate me for using that monstrosity of a word).

I have a clarifying question, though I believe I know the answer.
Some friends and I use paper printouts on top of a real card (usually a basic land) in a sleeve for proxies. the real card is the "backer" and paper printout has the full art and info of the card you're proxying.
According to the proxy rules these are not allowed, correct? I ask because I personally can't tell the difference when shuffling or in card thickness but there are likely more observant people out there. I make sure to cut the paper proxies to fit within the backer's border, which also makes sure that nothing is poking out of the sleeve.
Thanks in advance!

This is not allowed and I'll probably make a big deal out of it if I see it. This is nothing personal, blame post-it note guy (damn you post-it note guy). Pro-tip: if you double sleeve write with sharpie on the perfect fit, throw this over any card and call it a day.

Paper proxies are not allowed due to the reason that they can add card thickness. Even if you are not using this intentionally it is considered a marked card and would result in a warning from the Judge / possible worse. When in doubt on Proxies, see myself or the judge on site and we can make a determination for you.

was a very fun event and it was great to meet many of the area's Vintage players. As noted this was my first Vintage tournament and I went 2-3 in matches (my 6th round opponent conceded to me and left as he had carpool responsibilities) and 3-3 on record. Of the 3 losses, 2 matches went to 3 games (the 0-2 was against ErtaiAdept, where I failed miserably in trying to gain any traction in either game). So I take all that as good signs and I have a lot to learn!

I had a great time, and ended up going 10th after beating two people in the car I was with, one in the first round and one in the last . What did the top 8 look like? I know there was a Stoneblade, UR Landstill, and Orcish Survival deck.

As I recall, Top 8 was:
BUG Pyromancer/Delver Gush U/B Superfriends AppleJacks (Orcish Lumberjack Survival)
Top 4: UWR Landstill Grixis Storm
Finals: UW Stoneblade Control Slaver
I took it down with Control Slaver, beating BUG, Storm, and Stoneblade.
Great event as always, now I can't wait until NYSE!
