I'm thinking about buying a bunch of sleeves in bulk - what sleeves do my fellow Vintage enthusiasts find to be the most effective in terms of protection and playability?

KMC Perfect Fits inside KMC Supers.  I am in the process of switching to KMC Hyper Mat, but I have no results to point to, just reviews.

I use Hyper Mattes. I love them. They shuffle very well. They feel great in the hands. They split and break less than anything else I've ever used. They last a long time. For a long time, I was using many different types of sleeves. Once I started using Hyper Mattes, I stopped using anything else. They're just that good. And of course, I use perfect fits as well.

KMC perfect fits and KMC Matte (and KMC character guard for triple sleeved commanders),  I do like KMC hyper Matte slightly better and use them for cubes but not enough to re-sleeve my vintage collection.
Best place for bulk I know is potomac distribution.

I use black Ultra-Pro Matte, to sleeve all my cards, if they're played or valuable, so that I don't have to change sleeves from decks to decks. I get good prices from the store by buying them a box at a time instead of pack by pack. Contrarily to Dragon Shield or KMC they're not see through at all. Important for Delver and really used card. If I had to redo it, I might choose another color because it often happens my opponent has the same sleeves. This can lead to awkward moments where you mix decks especially when cards control switches.

For big tournamnts where there could be deck check like Vintage/Legacy Championship or Grand Prix I use new sleeves, often KMC or Dragon Shield. Dark sleeves are better because they hide cards back more efficiently.

Same. Specifically Matte Black. I haven't tried the hyper Matte sleeves, but I'm intrigued now that I've heard about them.

Yeah, the hyper mattes are as durable as the mattes, but I've found that it takes a lot more play to show any signs of wear on them and they don't suffer from the print defects of mattes (every so often you may get a few of the mattes with small indentations on the back out of the pack).

I use KMC Perfect Fits on every card I play.  I used Dragon Shields as my outer sleeves, although I might try some of the KMC Hyper Mattes eventually.  I had issues with KMC Supers and Mattes not all being the same size, making it almost impossible to fit in double sleeves, but that was years ago.

I single sleeve in either Ultra Pros or the cheapest available on-site.  My only value loss was when I accidentally folded the corner of my Tarmogoyf.

Ultrapro mattes and ultrapro pro-fits to double sleeve. I have all red sleeves but blue, violet and black ones are most opaque.
I used to use dragonshields but too many were unevenly cut and would show wear almost immediately, so, I switched.
Hope this helps...

i've been using Ultimate Guard for some time and worked best...tried all different sleaves available in last decade or so and no problems so far. They don't get "scrathed" or "smudget" as easily other sleaves do...

Interesting, I use KMC because I always split Dragon Shields. We should watch each other shuffle!

KMC Hyper Matte is the clear choice for me. I love the way they feel to the touch (firm yet supple), the way they shuffle (smoothly interlocking mash shuffle), and the way they look (perfectly frame the cards, stylish stippled back).

The only problem with Hyper Mattes is two-fold: a.) they are a bit expensive as far as sleeves go (usually $10+ for only 80 sleeves in a pack) and b.) the corners wear more quickly than other sleeves.

But the look and feel of these great sleeves makes these two issues worth dealing with.
