Awesome!! Happy to see another player-run event!  Will you be streaming T8 matches for the masses? I'd definitely tune in for that!

I'm going to try to do this. I keep missing events and I end up playing single matches, this seems a lot more fun.

So obviously most people are going to wait to register since they're not sure what they're going to play.  But despite that, we already have 3 registered so far.  And 2 of them were not one of the original 11 who expressed interest.  Based on some comments I've read on Facebook and overall feedback, I'm anticipating at least 16 for the first season, but possibly even more.

The more people we get, the more premiere the top 8 will be, so we could definitely work toward streaming the top 8 in a VSL style.

I think the 1st is Friday.  I might extend the deadline to Sunday (because of New Years), and have pairings go up Monday.  If there are any strong objections to that, let me know.

I'll sign up tonight, after my son goes to bed. I know what I want to play, I just have to finish tuning my list.

Good luck to everyone! Hopefully this works out well and I will have something fun to compete in.

Last year we ran a Vintage league via reddit. It failed. Here are some lessons learned:

1. People flake. Particularly when there are nothing to commit to (i.e. an entry donation).
2. People procrastinate. There should be a penalty for failure to play games within the given window. Not to harsh to discourage players, but harsh enough that affects their standings, etc.
3. I haven't seen anything re: prizes. Perhaps seek donation from a bot owners, wotc and/or ask for a suggested donation from players.
4. It'd be easier to manage the league if you're using gatherling.com
5. Since the lists are available, I suggest players can switch lists after each week.
6. Somehow our league lost enthusiasm. I don't really know how to fix this.
7. Our league coordinator was busy, so things didn't get updated on time and he/she wasn't really pushing other players to get on their games, submit their results, etc. It was a bit of a turn off.

These are my thoughts. I hope it helps!

MtgVector,

1. Thanks for your input!  I intend for the League to remain a staple in this community.  The Vintage League operates on the basis of having a responsible player base.  The League Members are not flakes, they're professional people who are usually making the time to play Vintage on MTGO anyway.  The premise for the League is to devote that time toward achieving a goal; the goal is better performance in the official events and ultimately, better prize income.

2. I'm not too keen on making a bunch of rules based on penalties.  If someone is compromising the integrity of the League, we'll cross that bridge when it actually happens.  In the interest of preserving the League timeline, the "no-show" will just be dropped from the season

3. Past Leagues may have tried to incentivize play by promising lame rewards.  I will absolutely not offer any prize unless it's worth at least $100 because otherwise it isn't worth anyone's time.  The incentive to play is already there without the reward because there are a lot of other venues already offering great rewards.  To achieve those rewards, you want to already have a bunch of quality reps under your belt and that's what this League is going to provide.  This League is a path to the highest level; a formal testing gauntlet.  The more quality reps a player gets in, the stronger the player will be.

4. Gatherling.com actually makes League management more difficult.  In the system that I've put into place, everything is automated and I have complete control of the code for future improvements.  With Gathering, I can't even log into my own account without issues.

5.  This is a good suggestion and it's something that I've thought of.  I haven't yet been able to put it forward as a poll.  I kind of want to see how this goes first and then we can make improvements.

6.  I think you solve this by continuously working on improvements.

7. I'm devoted.  I've already invested a lot of time into this and I'm not going to see it fail.

Thank You! I really appreciate posts like yours, they go a long way when it comes to improving the quality of the League.

Ok guys thank you for bearing with me as we work out some the kinks in the League operations.

Here are some things to stand out to me; I'm going to start working on solutions tonight:

1. Need a way to more easily coordinate games.  What I'm thinking is that I create a Calendar with tabs for each player.  Click on the players name - and then see their availability and how to contact them.  Or possibly even just have the computer display the availability that matches your own.  So to summarize, we need 1 place to go to for everyone's availability and contact information.
Another possibility is for the dialog be automatically initiated by a computer (e-mail).  I'm open to suggestions, but it's definitely something we want to put into place for season 2.

2. Need a way to change decks.  This could be weekly, or biweekly.  But I think 1 deck for an entire month is too long.  I'm going to implement this for bi-weekly first.  So, I will ask everyone to submit new lists for the 3rd week of this season.  Once again, if there are any objections to this or suggestions, please let me know.

I messaged the_unseen on MTGO and notified him that the pairings were posted.

I've also seen Qernavak on MTGO late at night.  He must be West Coast, Pacific Island, or Asia time zone

I posted a link to the match slip in the pairings post. It requires that you have your results from all three of your matches.

Vizzer's opponents should get a win, except for me; I'll take a loss.  I've been in contact with the-unseen on MTGO chat, but have been unable to make an actual game happen.

Facebook has become an incredible tool for staying in the loop with the league members, I'd really like to use it more for this.

nah. I made multiple accounts because at some point(m15?) each account came with a free prerelease, and then i used vizzerdrix for storing credit with bots. with the play points change having play split between accounts became bad.

Ok I've got all the results for the week.  I'll start working on standings and week 2 pairings.

I added "Game Losses" to the match slip, since I actually need that information.  I was able to obtain some of it, but I could use some information from Qernavak, Joel1031, Diophan, Matori, and Vizzerdrix.  How many games did you guys lose?
