Congratulations for the win and the awesome report, I'll wish you much more wins if you promise reports like this one to become an habit Just one thing: Round 1: Maarten with Aggro MUD
Game 1: I win the die roll and play first turn Hellkite. He matches it with a first turn Hellkite of his own and then ‘Sculpts his Steel’ into another Hellkite. I run my Hellkite into his and Duplicant his Sculpting Steel for the win. Duplicant was amazing for me all day!
Game 2: He may go first but it’s Hellkite again for me with a Duplicant for his Sculpting Steel on my Hellkite. Game over! He couldn't find an answer to the 2/4 duplicant in time, or did you believe it was a 5/5? I think Robrecht had a hellkite and a duplicant and he had nothing at least that's the way I read it. Why would duplicant that imprinted a sculpting steel copying hellkite be a 2/4? Is there something in the rules I missed? The sculpting steel comes into play as a hellkite and if it gets removed it's a sculpting steel again so duplicant is 2/4? Is that right? @ Robrecht congrats on the first tournament win. I didn't know it was your first one. Go Team Hasselt Robrecht: congratz on the win and welcome to the club of tournament winners. Punki: Indeed: Go Team Hasselt .

Report - Dutch Vintage Champs – Top 8 Hi all, this weekend we all battled in Eindhoven to take the title of Dutch Vintage Champ. I managed to get a seat for the quarterfinals but unfortunately this was also the last stop of my journey for the title. We were with 39 competitors and this was my weapon of choice: Maindeck4 force of will 3 mana drain 1 time walk 1 time vault 1 black lotus 1 mox emerald 1 mox pearl 1 mox ruby 1 mana crypt 1 ancestrall recall 1 mox jet 1 mox sapphire 4 misty rainforest 2 thoughtseize 2 scalding tarn 1 brainstorm 3 underground sea 2 tropical island 1 volcanic island 2 jace the mindsculptor 1 island 1 snow-covered island 1 forest 1 tolarian academy 1 merchant scroll 1 voltaic key 1 sensei's dvining top 3 spell pierce 4 dark confidant 2 trygon predator 1 tinker 1 inkwell leviathan 1 sol ring 1 hurkyll's recall 1 demonic tutor 1 yawmoth's will 1 mystical tutor 1 gifst ungiven 1 nature's claim 1 vamperic tutor 1 darkblast sideboard:3 nature;s claim 1 pyroblast 2 red elemental blast 2 mindbreak trap 1 sower of temptation 1 extirpate 1 relic of progenitus 4 yixlid jailer Round 1/6 - MUDI won the die rol and leaded with an island. My opponent played a mox and tried to cast his sol ring. I spell pierced the sol ring. This seemed a very good choice there my opponent didn’t had any other mana source and he stayed on just one mana for the remainder of the game. The second game I drew enough hate and was able to quickly assemble my combo for the win. => Win : 1-0 Round 2/6 – Gush comboMy opponent for this round was Zieby, someone who’s known to be a very skillful vintage player who was probably playing a combo deck. He kept while I mulliganned and accidently showed him my Jace. He told me he was happy that he kept this hand because this should give him a very decent fighting chance. Actually to be honest, I don’t recall much of this game except for the fact that I drew more counters for the counter war than Zieby and this gave me the game. Game 2 I opened with a Dark Confidant followed by another one. I rode this card advantage with an attacking body to victory by assembling also Vault – Key and tutoring for a Jace in the infinite turns. => Win : 2-0 Round 3/6 Portal MUD In this round I played Steven Vanderbulk. I knew he was playing an experimental deck and decided to keep a decent hand with 2 dark confidants but no black mana. My first 5 draws were my other black cards (I only lacked the Darkblast) and lost the game due to the inability to cast any of these spells. The second game I led with a first turn Inkwell Leviathan (Tinker + Tolarian Academy and Mana Crypt). He was able to cast enough creatures to block and kill my Leviathan while I never drew another land. => Loss : 2-1 Round 4/6 5c StaxPeter Reynders, my travel and team mate was my opponent for this round. I opened very broken, setting me up for a second turn kill. Peter opened even ore broken and was able to stop me from winning the second turn by casting a Tanglewire which I forced, and tinkering for a Sundering Titan, killing my black mana source which I desperately needed in my upkeep to win the game on turn 2. I played another Underground Sea in my turn but also here Peter had the necessary wasteland to prevent me from winning fast enough to escape the death by Titan. Game 2 I can’t recall anymore, but he also won that one. No need to say that he walked home … => Loss : 2 - 2 Round 5/6 WG BeatsAt this point I already abandoned all hope for the top 8 but decided to play on to see how far I could get. I opened the game with a Voltaic Key and passed the turn. My opponent played a land and passed. I did the same. Bart played Null Rod. This made me decide to use my mystical tutor to tutor for Tinker. I Tinkered my key into an Inkwell Leviathan and rode him to victory. Somewhere in between I also killed a summoning sick Mother of Runes with my Darkblast. The second game was a lot more fun there I opened with a lot of artifact mana which got shut down by Null Rod. I managed to keep his bord clear of creatures for some time until I drew one of my nature’s claims which freed my mana and gave me the ability to assemble my combo through a Yawgmoth’s will. =>Win : 3 – 2 Round 6/6 Homebrew U/R ControlI saw the standings and the only way I could make T8 was when Peter and another friend of mine drew there game. They would never do this intentionally because this meant that they also lost their chance on hitting the T8. At this time the TO announced that there would be prices handed out to everyone with 12 points or more. I decided to give my opponent a run for his money and started the game with a first turn Trygon Predator of a Black Lotus. Afther some turns of attacking my opponent stole my Trygon with a Sower of Temptation followed by a Trinisphere. My graveyard grew bigger and bigger. At some point I managed to cast a Jace and I bounced the Sower of Temptation, returning my little servant to his owner. My hand contained some counterspells, a Will and a Gifts. The will on its own would secure me the game so I needed to make sure this one resolved. At this point my opponent tapped 3 mana whiche resulted in him having only 5 mana available to cast a tinker into an Inkwell. At the end of this turn I tried to use my gifts with he happily countered, leaving him at 2 mana. In my first mainfase I casted my will which he couldn’t counter due to his own Trinisphere. Next I attacked with my trygon killing his Trinisphere, which allowed me to replay my lotus, mox emerald and 2 Tutors into Vault – Key, giving me the game. While sideboarding the TO announced time which meant I won this round also. => Win : 4-2 I went to Peter asking what he did and he told me his game went into a draw. I wasn’t hoping anymore on a T8 spot, but then the TO told me “Benji, Nicely done” and he showed me the 8-th place with my name next to it . quarterfinal Portal MUDAgain against Steve. I drew my opening seven and saw 2 Trygon Predator and 2 lands. I decided that since I was playing some sort of MUD this hand would give me a nice opportunity to win if I drew a land so I kept. Needless to say this third land never showed up… Game 2 he opened with 2 chalices, cutting me off my spells in hand and I also lost this one. Afther all this had been a very nice tournament and I enjoyed it a lot.

@ @Dr_Evil, So many points yet none of them managed to win the event Not on my watch they won't. In hindsight I wish I volenteerd as a judge on this event. I would have deckchecked David all day long. Good man! Sadly I wasn't around to take away some of those BE points, I'll see what I can do on their home turf in Mol this weekend though... Don't get your hopes up, you know where you belong: on the lower tables, you will be only there to make the difference in points even bigger in favor of the Belgian's

You liar! You were nowhere to be seen. Chicken! Last Sunday was amazing!! Great stuff!
I'll be there this Sunday too, with the Hasselt posse!

And the Hasselt posse was there in almost full force (2 people were occupied due to work )

Strange it hasn't been mentioned before, but 4 of this tingy, 4 goblin welders, 4 Mindslaver, 4 Soul foundry, 4 memnite, 4 kuldotha Forgemaster can be a good start to build a combodeck around that focuses on slavering your opponent every turn. (I'm not saying this would be viable, but it can be done...)

I just pre-ordered a playset for $80. Any predictions on whether this will end up being a smart buy or a stupid buy?
It has "Mox" in its name so it'll probably hold value due to casual appeal even if it sees no tournament play. 3b. Other than planeswalkers, what legendary anything sees play in any format? Academy Ruins sees some play in Legacy. Vendelion Clique maybe? Dredge, Show and Tell, and Oath decks run legends, but that's sort of a different situation. They almost never cast them. Now take all the ones people actually play and compare it to all the ones available. It's miniscule. So there is a natural predisposition to disliking legendary cards in the Magic community. Tolarian Academy, Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Karn, Silver Golem, Dark Depths, Karakas, Mindslaver, and Gaddock Teeg would like a word. Also Umezawa Jitte is looking for it's recognition as does llawan, cephalid empress

Actually, there is a theorethical way to measure skill of 2 given players with a certain deck.
Create 2 exact the same decks Order those decks identically let every player make it's spells at the same time witouth having a look at the plays the opponent does. at the end of turn both players can view the position of the other player and draw his next card. The player that wins at the end of the game has had the better skill in that game there all weapons were equal. If it ends in a draw, both had equal skill.
There might be some flaws in this system but it's a good start in tryig to measure skill of players but i think that we are derailing to much from the topic if we discuss this further...

I have really taken the time to read this thread with great interest and have come to the following conclusion:
It's clearly a fact that here on the Manadrain there is a great distance between members who think before they write and players who write and then start thinking. If this kind of behaviour is also exercised during tournaments, then I really start to understand why there's a big gap in America between the "good" players and the "scrubs".
Whoever stating Workshopdecks are bad i can tell you: Please pick up the deck and play skillfully with it. This deck is a powerhouse! The fact is that this deck is experienced as "less consitant" is because it is very difficult to make the right mulligan decissions and the deck has no deckmanipulation to make up for a bad decission. (otherwise try to explain me why 2 Exactly the same MUD decks made Top 8 in BOM V (I consider this tournament more of a word championship then the joke in gencon they call "world champs") if they are "bad" or "inconsistent"? 9 rounds of pure luck followed with some 3 more? -> I don't buy it!)
I even dare to make following bald statements concerning Vintage, it's decks and it's players:
Disclaimer: Please take these statements with some grain of salt because they are only intended to make you think about these. Those statements arent exclusive and defined since there are allways graduations, nuances and exceptions.
1. Every competitive deck in Vintage is good in a vacuum. It's only in a given metagame that a deck becomes "bad" or "superb" or "mediocre". 2. Every deck in Vintage is as easy as it's skillfull. It's just the players perception on the given deck and it's intelligence that defines a type of required skill. 3. Not a deck is difficult or easy. It's the player that has to be defined as smart or stupid.
If I had more time i should write an article explaining these 3 statements, but for now you have to do it with them as is.

Owen Turtenwald of Team ICBM is the 2010 Vintage World Champion!
Owen Turtenwald of Team ICBM is the 2010 GENCON Vintage Champion. Calling GENCON Champs the Vintage World Championship is a lie. Deal with it. A 100 people tournament where 99% (if not 100%) of the players are from the US is far from being a World Championship. BOM or EUROVINO are like 4-5 times bigger with players from lot more different countries. That's far more representative from what the "world champion" tittle should mean. Peace, piZZero - Jordi Amat Second that !!! If this 100 man tournament is a world championship, then Eurovino or Bom are the Intergalactical Championships. These statements of the "Word Championship" actually bother me enormously. I can live with the statement USA Champion of something of that kind though.

I'm glad i have been of some assitance proving you MUD is sometimes so inconsistant I won't take up that deck in the near future. It failed me miserably this Sunday. @AbdullahTheButcher: Thanks for your thoughts. @zieby: see you next time and congrats with the cute little baby! StrategyYesterday, I played something like 6 games preboarded against a new form of Tez... and I couldn't win one game! That was scary... So many basic lands and then Hurkyl's Recall for the win. I can't tell if I drew or played significantly worse then Sunday. I couldn't draw enough threats or they got countered/destroyed before they finished the job. I even got locked out myself because of too many Spheres (even two was too much in one game). Another game, I opened with one City of Traitors and proceeded to draw two other. I didn't face any of these problems during the tournament though... did I just get lucky and these things happen more often with MUD? or did I mulligan/play better during the tournament? I don't know... I didn't face Tez at all during the tournament and am happy I didn't, especially if that list would have been anything like the one yesterday evening. I could slow tez down a lot but was never anble to finish the job because I needed to draw mana first myself, or my threats got countered/destroyed. Robrecht

I'm working on getting the All Star team together. May God have mercy on your souls. Holy Friggin shit son, you're flying in the Euro's ? I should pack ! I've heard people say that New York in 2010 is the new be-all, end-all of Vintage. Sorry to burst your bubble but OBV Europe (BoM, Eur0Vino) is the be-all, end-all of Vintage... I should let you small fries worry about who's second best, but as a Dutchie I couldn't resist chiming in on this here thread.... Maybe it's time for you guys to come put up or shut up and attend a real event across the pond..... I don't like the fact that I have to agree with you Marske but this time you're right exept for the fact that YOU should pack . They definatly should fly in sime european players to get their ass whooped professionaly. Maybe then they'll realise the written rule that American's are actually behind on Europe if it concerns Vintage! Make an invite for a select European players and we will prove/back up this statement!

Personally I think this card has the wost value in Combo-decks. Using the stormcount of the opponent to kill at instant speek seems very sick. I don't know if this card can be broken for Vintage play, but i guess i would try it in a comboshell.
