Sorry for the necro... I wasn't aware the shop had closed. If you're still looking for So. Cal Vintage, your best bet would be to check out Frank's in Industry, if they're still in buisness. It's a wholesale warehouse for collectors and they do hold MTG tourny's there. They were only open 2 days a week but it's a good place to get contacts. If he's still there Mike is a great guy and a very fair dealer, he also was working on getting a storefront so that's an option. There is also Shuffle and Cut who deals there. Scott can be an aquired taste, Matt tends to be more personable. Tracerbullet used to set up much of the Vintage scene and if he's still playing could help you out. Other than that, I'm not sure if there are any new shops around the area. We did make the trip up north to Eudemonia a number of times. Great people there, and alot of fun. As far as the altercation, the owner of the complex was having cars towed from the parking lot late at night. There was alot of people parking there to go to the bar down the street which had limited parking. Apparently letting someone know of the situation was deserving of being run down. Juggernaut, if you're still around, lol I don't even remember that situation, so I can't really comment to much. Shout out to Pat! Hope all's going well with you. Also a shout out to John, Rob, Chris, Gio, Josh and everyone else from the old days.

Sorry to necro this thread, but I was lurking and came across it. I'd like to give Justin a shout out and thank him for keeping DMF going. I am so glad that the shop is still going and that many of the same people continue to suport you. I wish continued and growing sucess, you have one of the best jobs a man can have, you provide a place that people like to be while doing the things they like to do, best wishes sir! WHAT'S UP CALIFORNIA??!! I'm so happy to know that DMF is still there for you guys and that you are still there for it. Sounds like Justin is doing a great job for you bunch of scrubs I probably shouldn't do individual hello's, not only against the rules, but I'll surely forget someone I didn't mean to so just know I still find myself smiling thinking about something that happened at the shop, and I still feel enriched for knowing each of you. Say hey for me to everyone! Let me leave a list of things that I hope bring a smile to peoples faces; Some things are always good, 4am Political Talks, Norm's, Stupid Racial Jokes, Fluffers vs. Women who have sex with horses, No reservations at the NorCal motel, Unstacked, Jamba Juice, I'm Sorry, Stupid Black Cards, Bullet Proof Vests, Work rules regarding mens jewelry, and the list goes on....

Shout out to the So.Cal. Crew! Hey guys looks like I'll be moving on the 20th of August, yep bought a house in Minnesota and looks like I'll be selling this one, and would like to get together with you all before I go. So I'll probably be down at DMF one of these Saturdays.
As for the other part of the topic, any Vintage in So. Central Minnesota or North Iowa? I'm moving to Frost a small town in the Blue Earth Area. Pretty much between Albert Lea and Fairmont, about an hour south of Mankato. Looking for a store that supports Vintage as well as other formats and the WoW TCG. Now that I'm pretty much retired I think I may get back into cards a bit. Also any one or any group that plays in the area, I would like to hear from you!

Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / A voice from the past, or what happened at DMF
|
on: January 17, 2008, 07:00:39 pm

Hey all,
Damn seems like forever since I've looked at an MTG site. Things here are looking sharp, great job guys! It's good to see many of the old names still here and the return of some, a belated welcome back Z!
Unless you're part of the So. Cal. T1 scene you probably have no clue who I am as I rarely posted anything other than Tournament Announcements and Results, however many of you are well known by me through your many posts that have enlightened and humored the Vintage Community for so long now. I had a little time today and really wanted to say something to the So.Cal. Vintage crew about my sudden selling of DMF and disappearence, so here goes.
What Happened?
Let's just say I got several shitty draws, lol. Looking back I would have to say that the beginning of the end was getting run down in the parking lot. (short story long, apparently informing someone that the property owner would tow their car if they parked in that spot results in verbal altercations followed by a hit and run.) My recovery from the inncident was much slower than I had hoped and much more taxing on me mentally than I expected. My guess is the long period of heavy medication didn't help much either. Not just taxing on me but on the family too. Between the trouble going on at home, the shock of the inncident, and the extreme depression I was going through, things at the store strated to slip. Many of you were there at some point when I would just fall apart and close the store. I truely apologize for whatever may have happened or been said during those times. Thankfully, you guys were and still are some of the greatest people I've had the pleasure of knowing, I had more support and concern from you than a man may honestly expect.
As this was going on life figgered I could use just a little more to handle and promply served me more to deal with, which in the end resulted in my selling DMF.
Around August sometime my mother in law began being very ill. Several doctor visits could find nothing wrong with her, despite the fact that she was obviously sick. In late August, early September she became Jaundice, and was extremely yellow (think Mountain Dew). During the treatment for her condition one of the scans showed a growth in her pancreas. A biopsy revealed it to be Pancreatic Cancer. She then developed Pancreatitus and went into the hospital for a week long stay.
As many of you know we had two family buisness' running, DMF and Clark's Printing (which she ran), with the print shop being the more lucrative of the two. her hospitalization required me to put time in at the print shop, so I was litterally running both buisness'. This is when the wife and I started weighing our options and looking into what we were going to do, as there was no way I could keep up both shops.
At this point there was a surgical option for the cancer. The operation (Wipple Procedure) is an intense operation that was dangerous in and of itself, and with no certainty that all the cancer could be removed. When Sue finally came home, she was schedualed for the operation in a couple of weeks and she began getting me up to speed on the print shop. This lasted a couple of days before the doctors admitted her to the hospital again with Pancreatitus.
We had offers to buy DMF after the first 6 months of opening, which we had laughed about since we had no intention of selling untill the kids were out of school at the earliest. However, now selling or closing was a possibility that we had to address, but which buisness to sell/close had to be thought about. DMF was my baby, I loved that store and the people who played there were more than customers, they were friends. They had supported my efforts there 110%. So we waited to see what was going to happen. Another scan revealed that the tumor in the pancreas was to close to an artery to be operated on but there was hope that chemotherapy could reduce it's size and pull it back enough to continue. A few days later another scan found a mass in her lung, another biopsy, cancer, and also that the tumor in the pancreas was not next to the artery but encasing the artery making it inoperateable. It was clear at this point that she was terminal (Pancreatic Cancer is quite aggressive with about a 6 month survivability) so we sold DMF. Litterally the decision and the actual selling occured on the same day and the new owners had control the next day, as I went to printing, and helping take care of her full time. Sue, my mother in law, is now at home and pretty much bed ridden. By all acounts she will pass before this month is done.
I know that was a tad long winded, but alot went on in life in a short amount of time.
What's Current?
Well, I'm now printing full time, and helping with the end of life care of my wifes mother. My depression has finally pretty much subsided, and Jeanette and I have our 23 year relationship back on track for the most part.
I haven't really played MTG for quite a while now, but don't be shocked if I should make an appearance somewhere, sometime.
I know I've kind of rambled a lot but I felt really bad about my sudden departure and not having a chance to really talk to anyone, and I wanted you to know what happened.
I want to say that the people at DMF were very special to me and continue to be in my thoughts. I hope all is well with you, and wish the very best for all of you. I look forward to being able to sling cards, or just hang out for a bit when the opportunity arises. You guys are the greatest. I also hope all is going well at DMF and you are getting the support you so deserve.

Maybe when we see the decklist we'll know. BHWC builds solid decks which are played by solid players, and we don't even want to get into JACO's pimpness factor.
I wouldn't be shocked to see some unexpected tech out of the list, though they may have just reworked a standard build. They are in my opinion one of the most underrated Vintage Teams around, most of which is due to the lack of high-end tournaments here on the West Side.
Congrat's to Travis and the rest of the Top 8.
Congrat's Nick on one helluva weekend!

Someone who may be able to help get you in contact with people would be Stephen D'Angelo over at Crystal Keep. I don't know if he keeps in contact with any of the original people but it's worth a try. Donias is over at Upper Deck I belive, you might be able to get ahold of him there. BethMo, wow I haven't seen her in ages. I'll look around in my notes from previous research on DCI history and see if I have anything that may help you. Researching different aspects of MTG -Shawn

I'll work on getting deck lists for these at some point but for now we'll just go with deck types.
6/17/06 21 players
1st/ 2nd split Chris Tolar playing Control Slaver Mike Betz (Team Rogue) playing TUI (Erayo Control)
3rd - Leland Carey playing Control Slaver (Shay Build) 4th - Alex Vasquez playing Foodchain Goblins 5th - Gio Olivera playing Gifts 6th - Nathan McCloud playing Grim Long 7th - Zach Layne playing Doomsday 8th - Jeff Handlin playing ICBM Oath
Don Vandal playing sui black wins the bounty prize of a t-shirt for winning 2 games in the match while at 20 life.
Zach Layne playing Doomsday wins the bounty prize of a Rook Deck Box for being the first player to win 1st turn in the round with no Time Walk etc.
It was a good field tonight with WGDX, Slaver, Belcher, Landstill, UWb Fish, Sui, Foodchain, a couple of different oath builds, Gifts.
The meta game here is shaping up well as we have gone from a 6 player test group/informal tournament scene to having over 16 players and full blown tournaments for the last month, and still growing.
Note: Mods - Since this is a weekly tournament I'd like to keep the results here on this thread if possible. If not thats fine too.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Free Article] On Power-Level Errata
|
on: May 21, 2006, 11:00:26 pm
|
It doesn't really cost any money to errata and unerrata cards. Â All of the employees responsible for that sort of thing are on salary, and it's not like they're going to take on extra staff for the purpose of backspacing through a half-dozen iterations of the phrase "if you played it from your hand." Anytime something gets done in a business it takes up man-hours which equals money. If an employee is doing project X he is usually not doing project Y, which means someone has to or it has to be pushed back. Now I doubt that WotC would bring in outside staff and it's actually not relevant if the employees that would handle the task are on salary or not, working on a task prevents other tasks from being done during that time, thats all I was saying. Also, the number of cards that would be changed is unclear since no one has defined what cards would be changed, I only used the Free Creatures as an example to make a point, I'm guessing that there are other cards as well, not to mention that there is no clear definition or list of cards that are Power Level Errata, which basically means going through every card that has errata to check if it fits the requirements to be removed. That said, I don't really think that the rest of your argument holds up either. Â Cloud of Faeries is not coming back to Standard, even with the errata, because Cloud of Faeries is, even when you don't do anything abusive with it, just plain powerful. Â And if they did want to print it, they'd simply have to make sure that they weren't dropping it into an environment with any abusive tricks to do with it such as AEther Vial. Well I really didn't make an argument, I just stated my opinion on how I see the situation. Neither you nor I have any idea as to what will be reprinted and what won't be reprinted short of what's on the Reprint List, and a case could be made that some of those cards could be printed again. CoF is a powerful card, no doubt, but that hardly precludes it from being reprinted. Your point, about WotC just needing to make sure that if they did want to reprint CoF they could just make sure there were no Vial type cards in the envenvironment only serves to strengthen what I said, "By leaving the cards as they are WotC leaves the most options open for the future while expending the least amount of time and money.". With the errata in place, Vial type cards would not present a problem and keep design room/options open. While I'm interested to see what lifting the errata would do, I think WotC would consider what problems/constraints such a lifting would cause. -Shawn

I'm not sure WotC is going to be very receptive of this idea, even if a majority of Eternal players are. By lifting power level errata this almost insures that none of these cards can be reprinted in a new set. Just take the "free" creatures for example, while Whale and Palincron are on the reserved list, others are not. If the "played from hand" errata is removed, those cards that are not on the Reserved List have basically just been added to it, as they are not going to release cards that they know have problems onto the Standard format a second time. I also doubt that they would want to go through the time and money to unerrata these cards just to go back and re-errata them again if they want to reprint those cards. By leaving the cards as they are WotC leaves the most options open for the future while expending the least amount of time and money.
If the Time Counter is lifted from Time Vault doesn't this pretty much relegate cards like Voltaic Key to the Restricted List? At the current time WotC seems to be more inclined to remove cards from the Restricted List rather than add more cards.
Envoy is clearly errata to fix a printing/wording error, not power level errata. WotC has for many years been moving away from cards that create "memory" issues. I can't think of one example of an effect that retains a x/x modification to a card that doesn,t go away at end of turn, unless the card generating the effect is an Aura. I guess I could be forgetting one, but I'd be  if one has been printed since 6th edition.
Having said that, I'm really interested how evenpence's tournament works out, it sounds like a blast, and who knows, maybe WotC will make some adjustments.

Jacob, No problem, I probably shouldn't have gotten so upset over the whole deal, and definitely shouldn't have resorted to the language and tone that I did. It just gets frustrating at times. I do apologize. Moxlotus; Good question and one that I touched on briefly in my reply to Mr. Nightmare. What would have happened if you had went to the owner and pointed out that he didn't have a FBB dual but this guy does, can I buy it and flip you a couple bucks? Again I think it depends on the individual owner, which is really a lackluster answer. I think most owners would be willing to allow this to happen as long as it was all above board and didn't end up getting abused. I think offering to throw the owner a little cash would go along way to facilitating this. I know that I have players who have large collections of Foreign Foils which I don't deal with but are very popular. These guys will bring any deal up to the counter, ask if I have any of this stuff and offer to throw a couple of bucks my way. This seems to work pretty well, thought it may not be acceptable to everyone. I will say, as an owner, I was very agreeable when one of my players suggested this as it's a winning situation for all concerned. Player A got the card he wanted that I didn't have, player B sold a card he wanted to move, and I made a little money. On top of that the feeling of appreciation was overwhelming. EDIT: To touch on what Klep said: I will say there are some cards I go out of my way to get. This is usually stuff that I will use as Tournament Prizes, where the value of the people it will draw outstrips what I can sell the card for. -Shawn

First off thanks Mr. Nightmare, your answers are insightful. 1) Yes. Â I place a value on the services and space provided by a store. Â I feel this is partly paid for by my entryfee, as well as my continuing patronage to the store. Â There are many times when I need specific cards which they have in stock, and because of ease, I buy from the store. Â This also contributes in part, to my thanks. A reasonable response. So let me ask this. You have two stores nearby, Store has play space and OP. Store B does none of this but their packs are $1 cheaper, and sometimes they have random singles that are also a little cheaper than store A. Which store do you buy from? Does $1 a pack, and $1 more per $5 single matter to you? 2) Although the wording makes this difficult to answer, I'll try. Â In short, no. Â The difference in price between retailers and other players is not worth the space, time, and effort in some instances. Â For many cards in the store, the prices can be so skewed that it is 100% not worth it to purchase cards from the store, when I know I could buy the same card from another player or from eBay for literally half the price. Â Other times it is. Is there a difference in price between ebay and the store that would make spending more OK. For example if the store was say $1 higher than ebay per $20 value, is that OK? What about $2? Where is it that the difference becomes an issue? On older cards, like power, where there is a big issues of fakes, ripping, etc., how much more, if anything, is it worth to be sure about your purchase? 3) I'm not asking for anything else. Â Well, I am. Â I'm asking for a little slack. Â Understand that even if you have a full range of product, you don't have everything I need. Â In my local store, dual lands are priced at 28 for Plateaus, with blue duals closer to 40. Â They sell them, too. Â But not to me. Â If I know someone who's willing to step outside (and not right outside the door, to throw it in the face of the store employees) and sell me FBB Tundras for 60, why shouldn't I want to take that deal? Â Especially if I wouldn't see this person outside a large event? Â Should I be banned from the store or asked to leave for this? Â Maybe. Â But I don't see how this is taking profit away from the store, or even why I'm supposed to feel guilty for it. Sure it is impossible to carry every single item a customer wants. Damn those are some high prices for duals! Mine run $18- $22 and $25-$30. There is nothing wrong for wanting a better deal, hell, that's something we're all looking for. As for if you should be banned or ejected from the area is totally the owners call and each of us deal with it different. I suppose it depends on how large a problem it is at that place and the owners attitude. On your last point; Let's look at this way. You are going to your local store and are bringing $80 that you plan on spending for a dual, lunch and snacks etc. You get to the store and find that the dual you want is being sold at $40, which is more then you want to pay for it. You start playing and someone has a FBB dual that he will give you for $60 so you go ahead and buy it from him, you spent more than you wanted but got a great deal. So during the day you have lunch and stuff which probably ran about $10 leaving you with $10. Toward the end of the day you start looking around to see if there's anything you want. Your sleeves are fairly new, you have a life counter, you're not interested in boosters, but hey that playmat is kinda cool, oh wait it's $12, can't get that. Then there's the new t-shirts that just came in, oh wait they're $15, can't get it. Oh well, maybe next time. The store had 3 items you were interested in, one was not at a price you were willing to pay, which is fine, but two of those items were at prices you were willing to pay, but couldn't because of the FBB deal. You would have bought any one of those items, possibly two of them, and I would have had a chance to cut a deal to get you all three. However, because someone who has no overhead, no risk, and no investment in the community, thought they should just take advantage of the situation, the store sold nothing. What would have happened if you had went to the owner and pointed out that he didn't have a FBB dual but this guy does, can I buy it and flip you a couple bucks? I'm not saying you should feel guilty, I'm trying to figure out what the players are thinking. @Klep Well said @JuggernautGO I'm not sure what you're problem is but F**in chill. You haven't refuted anything, it was a question, you can refute theories, answers, opinions, all kind of things, but, you answer questions, or don't as the case maybe. I didn't say you were an angry child, I said your post made you sound like an angry child, notice the difference? Your not going to get anyone to answer your questions the way you want to hear it, because not many dealers post on TMD. So you're saying no one on TMD can answer a question honestly and with a little thought, how nice of you to speak for everyone, I'm sure they appreciate it. If you notice I asked PLAYERS what they thought, what that has to do with what dealers have to say is beyond me. I'm not sure if you're just plain stupid, lack basic comprehension skills, or just have something irritating stuck in your ass, but IMO, you are a poor example of a full user on these boards, at least concerning this thread since I asked a question, following the posting rules and everything, which in regards to you, I'm pretty close to being done with. 1:I place no additional value on stores other then what I pay in entry fees. Â If I ever want a card from a store, I have Hatcher pick it up for me. Fair enough. See you actually answered something straight forward and I didn't give you a bunch of crap. Treat me respectful and I'll treat you the same. 2:The difference in price is fine for the people who are OK with paying it. Â This doesn't stop me from pointing out that the prices are marked up beyond a reasonable amount in a lot of instances, and buying or selling to or from another player when he has a card I want at the right price. Absolutely, no one should buy or sell at a price they are not comfortable with. From the tone of your answer I'll guess that most of the time your store is usually within reasonable prices for singles and occasionally they have a price that is not. I see no problem with players giving honest feedback about prices. I personally deal with singles from over 7 different games, I try very hard to keep the prices within acceptable ranges, but occasionally some slip through. I have players who let me know if a price is out of line, which gives me a chance to research that card real quick and adjust if needed. Sometimes they're correct and sometimes they're not. I have always viewed this as helpful information, as it will often help me know when new tech is about to make a card suddenly hot or suddenly cold. 3:There is nothing more you can do, except do better advertising. Â No one in this thread asked magic dealers to do more, it started with an ethical question about if they feel guilty with the amount they buy/sell at. Â You turned it around to ask the players the same about selling cards. Â I gave you my answer and you went off the deep end in defense of your values. Yes advertising is key, even more so the correct forms of advertising, since traditional marketing methods are not effective in this industry. Actually Jacob said stores need to do more than just sell cards, which I agreed with, then asked what other things stores should be doing. Yes I noticed that when you point your ethics at dealers it's all well and good but when they get pointed back at you you're not so happy. Once again let me correct you, I asked if players feel guilty about selling stuff in side a store or at an event where legitimate dealers have paid for the right to sell cards to the players. I replied to you in the same, but more mature, tone that you replied to me, and will continue to do so. If you ask the magic community for their opinions, don't get bent when they say something you don't want to hear. Â Just move on. Well when you actually gave a relevant opinion, as in an opinion that actually addresses the question, I answered you in a respectful manner. When you respond like an ass, I'll answer in the manner an ass deserves. I'll move on when I'm damn good and ready or the powers that be decide I should. @orgcandman I was trying to avoid the Store Economics 101 lesson but it probably need to be done. I really am just looking to see where the players thoughts are or if they've even really given it any thought. No one should feel anymore guilty about selling their cards anymore then they would about drawing pictures or making music and selling them out of their house. However I doubt that many of them would consider it appropriate to go over to Virgin Records, or the County Fair and set up shop and start selling their stuff. It's an interesting mentality which I'm trying to understand, and hopefully help fine tune my business model to be more attractive to players while remaining viable. Unfortunately thats more then some people can handle apparently. -Shawn

Apparently there is a lack of understanding between us.
Since you seem so hostile, let put this a way you can understand it.
I wasn't complaining. I asked a simple question about what value players place on extras provided by a store. Not what my value to having players in my store is worth to me. If I don't already know that I'll soon be out of business. Apparently you are unable or unwilling to address the question. Please stop trying to turn my question into some kind of soapbox for yourself.
No one said you shouldn't or couldn't say what you want. No one said you shouldn't get what you want with your cards. No one said you can't think what you want about a rule or law. No one, except you, has complained about being treated unfairly, or not getting paid for extras.
I did ask: Do players place no value on the services and space provided by stores and events?
I did ask: Is the difference in buy/sell price between retailers and other players not worth the space, time, and effort put in by retailers?
I did ask: So if a store carries a full range of product, offers OP and free play space, what more should they do?
Are you unable or unwilling to answer those questions. I'm sure that spouting off things unsaid and trying to make people look bad, helps your self esteem issues or something, but it really just makes you look like an angry little child.
I'm sure if you reread my posts, or at least have someone explain them to you, you'll find I was asking a genuine question in a respectful manner. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to work for you, too bad.
Perhaps someday you'll understand that I never said you should do this or they shouldn't do that, I stated how I felt about a situation, stated a couple of factual statistics and asked a couple of questions.
As for me being unhappy, I'm not the one twisting others words so I can huff and puff about how I'll do what I want. I happen to be in the greatest business on earth, for me, I wake up everyday very satisfied with what I do and how I do it, it's a little presumptuous of you to think I'm unhappy considering your attitude. Everyone didn't have their Wheaties pissed in this morning. I'm really not sure how asking you what value you place on a service is complaining and how you can extrapolate from such a question that I'm unhappy with my lifestyle, or presume to tell me how to enjoy one of the many games I play.
When you grow up and can hold a reasonable conversation, let me know. I asked an honest question, that when you asked it while pointing at dealers was just fine, but when pointed at you, becomes a bunch of complaining.
whatever
