1  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: South Louisiana Vintage 6-8-13 on: June 09, 2013, 01:12:50 pm
I wish I would have done better, I went 1-4 with Espresso shops. I lost mostly to dumb stuff like t1 or t2 blightsteel and vault/key.

Here was the list I was running, Sorry about the glare

and the Sideboard

I'm probably going to try a Forgemaster variant next time
2  Eternal Formats / Workshop-Based Prison / Re: Stax sb advice against Oath help on: April 15, 2013, 05:09:14 pm
I 2-0'd a maniac oath deck running espresso shops Saturday.

Ratchet bomb put in work. Mana denial g1, and blowing up tokens with ratchet g2 won it for me.

6  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: [YMTCIV] Color choice on: April 01, 2013, 12:43:47 pm

I'm guessing something like this would be blue?

An enchantment with counters, that prevents opponents from drawing cards.

7  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Old frame cards on: March 31, 2013, 10:18:42 pm
The other post, and us talking about old frame cards, got me thinking.

What if instead of foils randomly in packs, they did the old frame on cards. I would much rather have that than foils.

How about you?

We should start a petition.
8  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: You're favorite block? on: March 31, 2013, 08:33:13 pm
You can't have been more right in everything you said.

The story line of the Weatherlight crew is by far my favorite, and sorely missed.

The old card frame as well is something I would do anything to get back, I think changing it was a huge mistake.

I've been talking with some friends about buying a box of each urzas set and doing some drafts.
9  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: You're favorite block? on: March 31, 2013, 05:03:08 pm
Just in general I guess. More towards playing than art though
10  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Your favorite block? on: March 31, 2013, 04:40:48 pm
I've been really nostalgic lately, and thinking about when I first started playing.

I started playing magic around urzas block\mercadian block. Ever since I started playing, I have yet to find a block I've liked as much as urzas.

The flavor of the set and the story behind it just drew me in. Cards like bargain, sneak attack, exploration, Academy rector, mother of runes, the legendary lands, the manlands, sunder, barrin, show and tell, tinker, crop rotation, time spiral, temporal adept, junk diver, masticore, metalworker, powder keg, false prophet, opalescence,  replenish, donate, opposition, treachery, negator, bloodshot cyclops, elvish piper,  patern of rebirth, roffelos, crawlspace, defense grid, grim monolith, memory jar, frantic search, delusions of mediocrity, miscalculation,  palinchron, goblin welder, rack and ruin, deranged hermit, might of Oaks, multani, rancor, karn, lifeline, smokestack, voltaic key, pariah, remembrance, serra avatar, worship, arcane laboratory, energy field, morphling, stroke of genius, windfall, duress, persecute, yawgmoths will, gamble, goblin lackey,  argothian enchantress, priest of titania.

sure I'm missing some, but the cards from this block are just so fantastic. I can't think of any other set that had this many good/iconic cards.

What's your favorite block and why?
11  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Where to find foreign cards? on: March 23, 2013, 10:57:43 pm
I'm looking to pick up some foil Russian lodestone golems.

There are none on eBay, ssg, cardplace.ru

Any ideas on where I might locate some?

Point me in the right direction
12  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: You Make The Card 4 - Design A Magic Card For Vintage on: March 22, 2013, 10:00:29 am
Artifact

3 colorless

At the beginning of each players upkeep, that player sacrifices a permanent.

Like smokestacks you can't ramp, but one cheaper and a turn faster!
13  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: You Make The Card 4 - Design A Magic Card For Vintage on: March 21, 2013, 12:58:35 pm
He's my idea

Un-named

Land

T: add 1

When "un-named" comes into play, name a land.

Activated abilities of named land that are not mana sources cannot be used.

Like pithing needle on a land, that can only target lands. Would be useful against dredge, shops, landstill and any deck would be able to use it.
14  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Story time - The quest for the Black Lotus on: March 13, 2013, 10:15:17 pm
So recently I purchased a collection from someone I had never met, over the Internet. He was a member of a gun forum I frequent. When I recieved it, there was more in it than I originally expected. I got ahold of ELD here on TMD because he had mentioned a while back that he had power for trade/sale.

After a few emails back and forth, I boxed up all the extra things I had that I was not using in a deck and shipped them off Monday. I'll be getting my first Black Lotus, among some other things.

Words cannot express how excited I am. I started playing in 1998. Naturally new players learn of the mythical Black Lotus shortly after they start into Magic. 15 years later, I'm finally getting one.I never thought I would actually own any power.

November of 2011, my wife bought me an unlimited Ruby, Jet, and Sapphire for my birthday. I think that's where it all began. Having power is a disease that spreads. Once you get some, it always wants to turn into more. I'm not going to lie, I thought about how I was going to aquire more almost every day for a long time after I got those first pieces.

If all goes according to plan, my things should show up at ELD's tomorrow, and I should be getting my first Lotus some time next week. I'm probably going to be grinning like a little kid all week once I get it. My wife has been laughing at me since I've been talking about it entirely too much.

What about you guys? How long did it take you to aquire your first Lotus from when you started playing? What were you like once you got it? Lol
15  Eternal Formats / Workshop-Based Prison / Re: I need some help - Workshop related on: March 12, 2013, 02:27:53 pm
I don't think ghost quarter would work very well. In my meta, they use a ton of basics already.

I've noticed that I'm so used to not wanting to chalice @ 1 because of the welders. Now that I don't have welders anymore, the only thing it shuts of for me is sol ring.

I need to start chalice-ing for 1 more often.

Maybe find a way to fit steel hellkites back in.

My original question too though,
When sideboarding what do I take out in certain matches. It all seems good, so I have trouble picking what to take out for sb cards.
16  Eternal Formats / Workshop-Based Prison / I need some help - Workshop related on: March 11, 2013, 10:47:44 pm
So I've been a casual vintage player since about 98'.

Just recently we started having tournaments down here in Louisiana. It's making me realize I'm not as good as I thought I was lol.

I'd like a seasoned shops player, prison variant,  to be able to talk strategy with.

Discussing my list, unfavorable matchups, sideboard and how to side for certain matches.

If anyone's interested, we can post here for the greater good, or take it to emails.

So here it goes:

I'll start off with my list and how it got to where it is now.

I started off playing 5c shops years ago. Around the time Vroman was running Uba Stax I think, I switched to mono red. I stayed with mono red for quite a long time. I updated it when new printings came out like Cotv, lodestone, revoker, and metamorph.

I was really enamored with the welder/crucible/bazaar shenanigans. I took me a really long time to get away from it. Recently though, I've realized the consistency issues with the red mana base. I finally took the plunge and switched over to mono brown. I've noticed an immediate improvement in two areas.

1) The consistency of only having one color mana, and the speed from having room for more ancient tombs.

2) Removing the bazaars, welders, red mana lands and b-rings has given me more room for threats like thorn, karn, factories, and some more revokers/metamorphs.

So here's the list I'm on now...

2x Karn, Silver Golem
3x Phyrexian Revoker
3x Phyrexian Metamorph
4x Lodestone Golem
4x Smokestack
4x Tangle Wire
3x Crucible of Worlds
4x Sphere of Resistance
2x Thorn of Amethyst
4x Chalice of the Void
1x Trinisphere
1x Black Lotus
5x Moxen
1x Sol Ring
1x Mana Crypt

4x Ancient Tomb
4x Mishra's Workshop
4x Mishra's Factory
1x Tolarian Academy
4x Wasteland
1x Strip Mine

Sideboard:

1x Crucible of Worlds
3x Null Rod
4x Ratchet Bomb
4x Tormod's Crypt
3x Grafdigger's Cage

Over the course of the last few tournaments, this is the list I've come too.

The Karns are the most recent changes. I had found that I had the lock aspect down, but I was taking too long to finish. Giving my opponents too much time to find answers. I feel like he will fill that role well, but have not had a chance to test it yet.

I think the biggest questions I have are tips on certain matchups, and sideboarding.

Meta Game is some blue/black control, uwg fish, shops, dredge, Dragon combo, and bomberman.

My worst matchups are:

Fish - I can't seem to get past all the artifact hate and counters maindeck. Things like aura of silence, Ancient grudge, energy flux, nature's claims, stony silence, and serenity. I really have no idea what to do in those situations.

Time vault - Unless I get a revoker in time, Theres not much I can do about this aside from null rods from the sb, or just locking them out from casting it.

Landstill - don't even know where to start with this one. They run crucibles so my Stax don't do much, and pack tons of counter magic.

These are the matchups I think I need the most help on for sideboarding, or even just strategy tips in general.

If this needs to be moved to the workshops section, my apologies. I just figured it was more of general discussion since it's not really anything new relating to shops. Just me playing better.

20 lbs of crawfish down.

Then home to sort some cards!
20  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: South Louisiana Vintage 2-9-13 on: February 20, 2013, 09:01:56 am
I had a lot of fun at this event! I'm really glad we had people show for it. From asking around, I believe we will have a couple people next time that were not at this last one.

Here's my little piece on it all:

I was on mono red shops. Here is my list I was running.

4x Goblin Welder
4x Lodestone Golem
2x Phyrexian Metamorph
2x Phyrexian Revoker
1x Black Lotus
4x Chalice of the Void
4x Crucible of Worlds
1x Mana Crypt
1x Mox Emerald
1x Mox Jet
1x Mox Pearl
1x Mox Ruby
1x Mox Sapphire
4x Smokestack
1x Sol Ring
4x Sphere of Resistance
4x Tangle Wire
1x Trinisphere
3x Barbarian Ring
4x Bazaar of Baghdad
4x Mishra's Workshop
2x Mountain
1x Strip Mine
1x Tolarian Academy
4x Wasteland

Sideboard
2x Ensnaring Bridge
3x Grafdigger's Cage
2x Pithing Needle
4x Tormod's Crypt
2x Maze of Ith
2x The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale

Of The games that I played, I was about 50/50 against the blue decks I played, I lost to fish and bomberman, And beat dredge.

I decided to switch over to mono brown due to the consistency issues with the mana base of red. The games that I lost to bomberman was just due to it comboing out and me not finding an answer soon enough. I lost to fish due to keeping a hand I shouldn't have and getting land screwed.

Sideboard-wise, tormod's was pro. I didn't even use the tabernacles, mazes, or bridges.

It was a lot of fun though, I'm really excited about the next one. Next time I'll try to take some notes to be able to give a little better report.

Here's the pictures I took...

21  Eternal Formats / Southern U.S. / Monthly vintage in Lafayette, LA! on: February 10, 2013, 12:04:00 pm
So we've had our first little tournament the other day, and 10 people showed.  We had a little shy of a weeks notice though so I think it turned out pretty good.

We will be holding monthly vintage now on the first Saturday of every month for those interested

It's at :

And Books Too.
3315 Johnston St.
Lafayette, LA 70506

It was $10 yesterday, and the top 2 split. I'll be getting some stuff to put up as prizes in the near future though. Once we figure out how much entry will be and what we are playing for I'll post here.
22  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Morphling.de on: February 08, 2013, 07:48:17 pm
Apparently someone hacked morphling.de.

They have a post about it on their front page saying that if it happens again they are just going to take down the page. That's going to suck if they do. We are already low on vintage resources...

This is why we can't have nice things!  Lol
23  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: I'm excited! on: February 03, 2013, 05:21:04 pm
I'd be fine with doing it at and books too,

It's Just every time I've been to the shops in Lafayette, no one's been at and books.
24  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: I'm excited! on: February 03, 2013, 01:02:53 pm
I'd  definitely be down for a road trip if you got something going over there.
25  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: I'm excited! on: February 03, 2013, 12:17:47 pm
I'm probably going to suck lol, I haven't played a game of magic in about a year.

And that was just smashing standard and legacy decks with my vintage one.  I haven't played against a good vintage player in probably....5+ years?
26  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: I'm excited! on: February 03, 2013, 11:48:35 am
Lol I sent him a PM too about 30 mins ago
27  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: I'm excited! on: February 03, 2013, 01:21:06 am
It's gonna be Saturday,  but we haven't set a time yet.

Any preference?
28  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: I'm excited! on: February 03, 2013, 01:09:33 am
Probably anime & games central on Johnston st.

They have a ton of tables in the back to play at.
29  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: I'm excited! on: February 03, 2013, 12:57:49 am
Sorry I have not emailed you back.

Between the new job and adjusting to waking up at 5:30, moving and unpacking, and the newborn...

I don't know where all my days are going, time is flying by.

I'm going to be driving to Lafayette next weekend to meet a couple people to play. It would be sweet if you could make it, I know it's a lot farther for you though. It's only about an hour and a half for me.
30  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: I'm excited! on: February 03, 2013, 12:39:53 am
Lake Charles, La.
