1  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Is Your Current Vintage Deck Proxy Free? on: January 14, 2016, 01:08:43 pm
Proxy free on my side, and bringing proxy free decks for two people each time we launch a tournament as I'm able to build Shops, Dredge and a blue deck at the same time.
In Paris, we got the habit to lend as much cards as possible when needed.
2  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: WotC cracking down on proxies, even in non-sanctioned events on: January 13, 2016, 10:18:29 am
Guys, for now this has been a post from a store that may or may have not misjudged Wizards policy enforcement and, maybe, nothing has changed at all. Has anyone talked to Wizards or the store? Do we know what's really going on or if this is just a false alarm?
It's not just a store.
Community Team lead Trick Jarrett made it clear on Reddit:
Quote
Hey folks, I checked into this and here’s what I can tell you:

First is an important clarification: Proxy cards are substitute cards created solely by judges in sanctioned tournaments. These substitutes are allowed when authorized game cards become unplayable during a sanctioned tournament because of damage or excessive wear. Unauthorized reproductions of our game are a type of counterfeit, and we want business partners to help us in discouraging counterfeit Magic.

I know that feels crazy, that we regard marker on a card as a counterfeit, but remove the visual accuracy from the judgment – they serve identical purposes when it comes to game play.

Counterfeit cards are prohibited in sanctioned events, sounds like most people are on board with that. And based on Wizards’ Code of Conduct, we have started to ask stores not to organize unsanctioned events with counterfeit cards. And to be clear, no one we’ve communicated with recently has been suspended or punished as far as I know. We’ve talked to some stores on the difference between counterfeit and proxy cards, and are asking WPN to stores to work with us in protecting our intellectual property.

Wizards wants partners in the WPN to make sure stores are welcoming environments, not use our characters in offensive images, and any number of actions that protect Magic experiences. We don’t condone counterfeit cards, and we expect stores to respect that. WPN stores are our partners and we expect them to help us protect our intellectual property.

We know players love Magic and love playing its variety of formats, including Vintage and Legacy. Some formats are easier to get into than others and these two are hard.
3  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: New Spoiled cards on: December 31, 2014, 04:17:09 am
It's clear R&D got scared after KTK. Seeing that, really makes me think that they gonna restrict Cruise next.

Out of curiosity, how long in advance of set releases are the details finalized?  I thought they were set in stone long before release, but perhaps they now have an opportunity to modify things based on the previous set's impact.
The cards of FRF were indeed made and finalized before KTK went out, so the card we see are the cards as they were made, without any impact from what happened after the release of Cruise/Dig
(MaRo confirmed it again yesterday on his tumbler account)
They may however have had the time to make changes for Dragons of Tarkir.
4  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Anafenza, the Foremost on: September 05, 2014, 09:04:53 am
You mean everything like Rest in Peace, Tormod's Crypt, Relic of Progenitus or Ravenous Trap?

It indeed is hard to deal with for sure, but as far as I see on the dredges I play against, Chain of Vapor or even Firestorm aren't that few, especially against an aggro meta.
5  Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Anafenza, the Foremost on: September 05, 2014, 02:51:31 am
The problem is it "just" stop them.
If they got a solution for your creature, they start again where they left.

A card like Rest in Peace or Tormod's Crypt leave them behind where they were and they have to start again.

So the card is like a worse Cage for 3 manas, on a beatstick.
6  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Aaron Forsythe asks how Wizards can support Vintage on: September 05, 2014, 02:44:35 am
If they abolished the reserve list, then they could use power cards and other expensive stables as prices, or they could include them as extremely rare cards in boosters packs. This would likely promote the game fairly well i think Smile
What would be the point to add only a handfull of power cards?
They'll just evaporate onto the hands of collectors in a heartbeat and you'll have the same Vintage scene as before.
Aaron Forsythe's question doesn't sense if he doesn't tell us what Wizards is trying to achieve in regards to Vintage.
I think he may just be asking to see if someone could have a reply they didn't think of. It doesn't cost much to ask anyway.

1/ Reprinting a few cards will not help as the entry cost will still be too high (it was too high years ago already, so even if the price was cut in half today it would still be), discarding the fact that they said they will not do it anyway.

2/ Allowing proxies is a nonsense for them, as they're a business company. Allowing counterfeits (because a proxy is just a bad one, let's be clear) on events you run is not acceptable. it would also potentially hurt the sales as (with a huge shortcut) more Vintage players = less boosters opened.

3/ Allowing IE/CE would fall onto both 1 and 2, sort of.

The only solution for players is a massive reprint. That will not happen on paper, so that leaves us with MODO.
They allowed themselves to do it there because they do not plan to really support the format on MODO anyway. You just have to see the current tournaments they're running and the period of time the set's on sale.
So you've got no reason to play competitively and you lose the friendship/community/IRL feeling of Vintage? It will not bring a lot of people out of Standard, I guess.
That's a safe bet for them there. Vintage players rebuy there stuff completely: win! They sell a new set without much risk for their supported formats: win again.
7  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Aaron Forsythe asks how Wizards can support Vintage on: September 04, 2014, 02:39:48 pm
Actually they'd probably all get combined into a single class-action, I would imagine.  I still think they need to just rip off the band-aid sooner rather than later.  Potential losses only increase as time goes by.
Don't you think that they just don't want to reprint power and high value cards?
I mean, look at us Vintage players, and tell me that we're the ones buying boosters.

More players playing Vintage will most likely mean less players on Standard/Modern/Draft as players don't have time to play every formats. Less players on those formats equal less sells overall.
Don't expect the argument "Only Legacy/EDH players would play Vintage and they aren't buying boosters anyway" would work on WotC. They'll not take the risk.

They got so few to win by reprinting the reserve list and so much to lose...

It hurts, as I don't plan to rebuy every card i own on MODO, but I think the future for Vintage isn't on paper unfortunately...
(but if i'll keep playing as much paper Vintage as possible, even if it's not sanctionned!)
8  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Is anyone steaming vintage on MODO? on: July 03, 2014, 02:11:42 am
LSV has done some video of constructed Vintage:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVmqfvWsKeFaMGY68CbcVVQ

One daily event with a Tendrils deck and one with an Oath deck.

There's also multiple Vintage Masters drafts.
9  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: VINTAGE on Magic Online is announced!!! on: June 18, 2014, 02:19:45 am
1) they were not reprinted in Vintage Masters (but the comes into play tapped fetches from Mirage were)
Probably because they didn't put any Modern legal card?
10  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Your Favorite Magic Card & Why (list no more than 3) on: June 04, 2014, 08:34:19 am
Rings of Brighthearth
This card allowed me to play so much fun and interesting interactions.
This was the first card that I played competitively in Vintage that surprised my opponents. It allowed me some unexpected victory only due to the fact that my opponents didn't know it.
I remember at some tournaments, players that are since good friends of mine watching me playing and giggling when an opponent failed to see an infinity combo coming with the Rings.
Earing "He never played against you before, didn't he?" was always sweet to me!
I played a Shop Combo for several years and Rings still has a sweet spot in my heart. So much that I did my wedding invitations with it.

13  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Bazaar of Moxen coverage on: May 06, 2014, 03:12:58 am
Agreed.

Regarding the DT, as far as I know, it was Lotus and FoW.
As I don't know what was on Lalaïna's hand, I can't say for sure that those weren't good choices, but indeed, going for something more aggressive looks better against an opponent mulliganing to 5 with 2 cards in his hand.
14  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Magic movie in the works on: January 17, 2014, 05:06:13 am
Does anyone remember the D&D movies?
I sure hope it will be better than that...
15  Eternal Formats / Europe / Re: BoM PARIS - Bazaar of Moxen : 1, 2, 3 november 2013 on: November 08, 2013, 04:03:36 am
I would suggest you, if you've got some complaints, to complete the Google form available here:
http://www.bazaar-of-moxen.com/fr_index.html

The TO told me that it was done to try to correct the problems we possibly had during the weekend, so it seems the right place to say what we want.
It's in french, but easily understandable and last page of the form is for specific demands as, here, better coverage of the vintage top8.
16  Eternal Formats / Europe / Re: BoM PARIS - Bazaar of Moxen : 1, 2, 3 november 2013 on: November 05, 2013, 04:43:13 am
You've got one Sneak&Show on the top8 as well, who finished 2nd at the end of the rounds.
17  Eternal Formats / Europe / Re: BoM PARIS - Bazaar of Moxen : 1, 2, 3 november 2013 on: October 07, 2013, 05:13:20 am
AS I see it, to reach Gare du Nord, you should take RER A from Nanterre Préfecture to Châtelet les Halles, and then take either RER B or RER D to Gare du Nord (or even Metro 4 if it's really late)).

The last RER A is at 0h38, but if you want to connect with the RER B/D, the last one is 14 minutes earlier (connecting at 0h45 at Châtelet).

I would recommand not trying to take the last one, because Chatelet isn't an easy station to navigate into, and so isn't Gare du Nord.
18  Eternal Formats / Eternal Article Discussion / Re: [Free Article] A Portrait of the Pyromancer as a Young Man on: July 24, 2013, 08:25:09 am
The article was a really nice one, quite refreshing with different way to see this really nice new card, so thx.

I'll give him a try this sunday, and hopefully will be successfull.

If I may, however, there's still a problem on at least one of your decklists.
The U/R Delver list has got 19 SB cards, which is powerful but a bit much I would say. Could you please tell me what would be the 4 to cut?

Anyway, thx for the good work and please, please, keep going.
19  Eternal Formats / Eternal Article Discussion / Re: [Premium Article] Schools of Magic: The History of Vintage Chapters 1-2: 1993-94 on: December 06, 2012, 08:23:39 am
I appreciate the interest, but caution that I will only produce chapters so long as there is demand for the previous chapter.
May I ask you how many people interrested would keep you writing?
It could seem selfish, but if I start to read (and buy) a story, I would like to be sure I'll have all of it, and not only the teaser, if you see what I mean.

The whole story is better than the sum of its part, I think.

Anyway, that's a lot of work and a very good initiative.
20  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Why I am not going to Gencon this year. on: June 14, 2012, 07:58:54 am
I wasn't at BOM this year, but the other years i never heard of things like these. There are several reasons for this:
1. Eternal magic players in the whole room only, and some staff/judges/dealers, few spectators.
2. The venue is like a "pit". You have the playing space, where no spectators are allowed (there would be no space anyway, it's croweded with tables, basically back to back. The spectators are looking down on the players, There is an elevated balustrade around the "pit".
3. Last years, there was one massive big security guy (maybe more i didn't see), watching the door, and very friendly at that.
4. Personal anecdote, not representative at all: people brought decks someone else forgot to the judges..
Maybe someone of the BOM crew can tell more? (hemgath on TMD)
I really hope you can get the situation right over there! Otherwise come to BOM. Everything is awesome there.
I was, and I can confirm that there was at least one security guard patrolling the room at all times. Two during the big legacy and vintage events during the weekend.
The organisation didn’t change much this year and there wasn’t any goods stolen that I’m aware of.
I must say that Pastimes adding space between tables may be a good idea but it could add people watching games also.
In the opposite, during the BOM, as the room was FULLY crowed with tables and chairs make it impossible for thieves to go around the tables except the ones at the end of each rows.
Plus, being able to see the tables from around and from the top, as PETER FLUGZEUG explained, prevented also the presence of spectators around the tables.

Maybe this configuration could be reuse by Pastimes?

Regarding people bring decks back to the judges; it happened again this year Wink
21  Eternal Formats / Workshop-Based Prison / Re: Forgemaster MUD + wurmcoil engine on: March 02, 2012, 05:00:21 am
Regarding the staff, I must say that, after a lot of testings, it seems to be just wrong. (and it hurts me to say so after playing shop combo for several years)

You'll need to have already on board at least Metalworker, Forgemaster and 2 more artefacts to tinker AND to keep your metalo.
That means when you'll be able to reach your staff with your Forgemaster, your hand will be empty or you'll erase your own board.
If I need to wait 3/4 turns before comboing out, it's not worth it.

Also, I'd much prefere keeping the forgemaster on board than a metalworker who no longer does so much of manas...

So, OK, time to time you'll draw both metalo and staff on your starting hand, but if it's what you're looking for just put 4 of them on your list and remove the Forgemasters.

well, I tried something simple to know the time it will take: google map.
From
1, avenue Germain Perreard - 74960 Cran-Gevrier
To
Geneva International Airport, Meyrin, Switzerland
=> 38min

Geneva is a big city, it takes time to go across it Wink
23  Eternal Formats / Europe / Re: BoM.6 Bazaar of Moxen: 17 to 20 May 2012, 220 Dual lands, 52 pieces of P9... on: February 20, 2012, 07:41:50 am
I think you'll be a bit short, unfortunately...

Last year, there was 382 players, so 9 rounds and top8, or 8 rounds and top16 (last year, it was 9+top8).
Even with 8 rounds, it makes you leave the tournament AT BEST at 17:00 (and let's face it, every tournament is late, especially big ones like that).
+40min to reach the airport, at best as well... I hope you don't plan on winning the event, or even staying for the last round.
24  Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Re: New Rules, and the Death of Oath? on: December 20, 2011, 09:52:40 am
Nop you can't.
As Dark Confidant doesn't have "may" on it's ability, you normally must take your card, no matter what.
Here, it will apply only if you forget to take the card and I suppose you opponent will not let you skip it more than once before realizing you’re trying to cheat (if done on purpose).
25  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Favorite Magic Plays on: November 02, 2011, 10:35:41 am
He didn't know what it does, so here again, I explained it and I obtained the same disdain look from him and his aggrement to go. Then I said "I do infinite mana, OK?" and he was O_O "wtf?" He asked me to come back, wanting to counter the Rings because he didn't see the manas coming, which I of course declined, having a Sensei's top and a Staff on hand to win the game.

Why exactly didn't he simply counter Staff?
Because a top+Rings+infinite mana allows you to draw your entire deck as well.
26  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Favorite Magic Plays on: October 29, 2011, 04:09:12 am
It was my first vintage sanctionned tournament, dragged by friends, and I was still playing a deck that I liked instead of a good one: was playing shop combo.
I did pretty well during the rounds and entered the top8 to face a classic top8er around and probably one of the less sympathetic opponent I ever had.

He was playing a Drain deck of some sort and I had already won game one.

This time, I opened with Shop + Basalt Monolith, go. He disregarded the card (that I still explained), like I was playing a pile of crap of smt. He did land go, and next turn I played Mana crypt, Rings of Brightheart (must be my all time favorite card, I assume!)

All of my buddies were laughing their faces off after the round, saying they all knew this was coming with my weird deck.

Most of my favorite plays are done with inconventional cards, because lots of overconfident vintage players don't see the tricks coming!

Creat things like wormholes, or put each opponent into a pitch black eternity?

(looks more like evil stuff, I know)
28  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Suspensions over NPH Leaks on: April 29, 2011, 09:01:07 am
Keep in mind that a paper magazine has to be completed like a month before its actual release. So will you buy a mag that has 1 month old news on it, everything already seen online and so on?
All the good mtg mag around the world most likely have the godbook on their hands to be able to produce a set review on their pages the same month the set is released.

Beside this point, yeah, pros able to see the cards before others are kinda unfair, because they're able to playtest. But with who? No so much players I guess, before such a leak appears.
And it never appeared before, so I assume there isn't so much ppl seeing the godbooks, which means the ones who see it don't playtest that much and most likely keep the godbook for their writter job only.

Anyway, yeah, banning those guys was the right decision, even if, to be fair, you and I would probably have done the same than Wafo-Tapa (who didn't sign the NDA after all) and gave the book to friends.
BTW, didn't we actually do it? Wink
29  Eternal Formats / Workshop-Based Prison / Re: [Deck Discussion] Fred Astaire on: April 04, 2011, 02:43:51 am
Well, precursor and wurmcoil are an attempt to mitigate the null rod weakness. Those 2 creatures can be hardacasted and may sometimes be sufficient to win against a null rod deck. But you are right, those are 2 of the 5 slots I am not sure about.
- Wurmcoil, Precusor, Sensei, Strip mine, Mox Opal
In my opinion, you'd better go all in on game 1 and see if you're able to win post board against null rod decks.
Hellkite and platz are also good cards to stop Trygon, which is often found in those decks.

Regarding Top it's, for me, a must have as it allows you to draw and drawing has always been a problem for shop.
