I had a dreadnought deck that topped 4 before. Not a tier one deck, but fun. The best card to play with Illusionary Mask, besides dreadnought, is Fathom Seer. 1 {U} to cast. It has morph by returning two islands to your hand. Put it under the mask for two. Flip it up for a two card advantage for free. The only bad thing is that you need the mask. And the best thing is your opponent will probably try to kill it thinking you may have played a dreadnought. Sneaky tricks FTW.
2  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: "The Hater" or you can just say "The Bad and Naughty Scrub" on: August 08, 2006, 04:14:37 pm
Yeah, I used to play a playset of wastelands in them maindeck, but kept running into non colored mana problems. I play too many colored spells and can't afford that many non-colored mana sources. I would probably play 2 waste at most because everyone has basics nowadays. I'm debating about mox monkey and hide//seek right now. I actually want to squeeze both of them into the maindeck. I'm just looking at 2x of each at most. I'm sort of leaning towards mox monkey though, because it's easier to cast out and it got legs. I'll have to take a look at that, but I haven't touched my vintage magic decks since the last tournament, and i'm probably gonna miss this weekends also.

Consultation is an awesome card and always worth looking at, but it's just my personal preference to "not" play it. It's the same with Necropotence. These were all cards I originally had in the deck, but decided against it at one point in time to not play them. If you can find the space for them, that's great.

This deck was originally built to own control, but always lost to trinistax. Now that trinisphere is restricted, it gives this deck the breathing room that it never had. Try it out, like i said in an earlier post...

@UR

I know that the MaskNaught combo is cuttable, but that would go against my original reason why I built it. Its where bad cards can win also. Besides that point, I also think that the mask is a house against control. Having creatures come into play without worrying that it's gonna be countered is a great plus to include in a deck. Also, having a Naught to provide the extra pressure of a turn 3 kill after it drops down is an added bonus. Also, hiding the identity of creatures can be a big help also. Your opponent will always be cautious on what they play because they don't know what's hidden. You don't need the mask to win with this deck. It's an added bonus, and the dreadnaught just goes along for the ride. If you play this deck and depend on it, then your not playing it correctly. The combo is just there for an added bonus. And the most enjoyable thing is that when people say that they won't lose to masknaught because it's terrible. And the look on peoples face when the 12/12 smash their face in... PRICELESS

You know what card i actually thought about adding is Grim Lavamancer. It provides DD for the deck. Also, I originally had Mox Monkeys in the deck. Those cards could be on the side and then brought in depending on your meta. There's plenty of options, it's just how you want to play it.

hide // seek sounds great... i'm gonna try that out... thanks
5  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: "The Hater" or you can just say "The Bad and Naughty Scrub" on: July 17, 2006, 06:26:15 pm
yeah, that sounds pretty good, but do you think that it would be better off the side or in the main. Therapy that is.
6  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: "The Hater" or you can just say "The Bad and Naughty Scrub" on: July 17, 2006, 06:08:48 pm
Well, yeah... combo is aggros worst match up anywayz... I refuse to put blue into the deck just for counter. I doesn't help the deck enough. I tried the blue in the deck before and I didnt like it. Duress and pyrostatic pillar is going to have to do it. If not, oh well. Is there anything you can think of that I may need in the deck, besides rule of law?
7  Eternal Formats / Creative / "The Hater" or you can just say "The Bad and Naughty Scrub" on: July 17, 2006, 05:17:55 pm
Well, I'd like to introduce to an old deck that I've had for a very long time but didn't pull it out until this past weekend at the tournament. But I'd like to give you a brief intro how the deck came to me. Well you know that the combo of Illusionary Mask and Phyrexian Dreadnaught has been around for ever but no one has played it. Well, I've had my masks since it was still legal in legacy. But once it rotated out of legacy, I was stuck with these masks that I had no use for. Well, I decided to build a deck with it. So I was like, "These cards are terrible, what other terrible cards can I play with them?" I then remember that my friend has some scrublands and badlands that we had no use for. So I gathered them up from my friends and looked for cards to build a vintage deck around these "bad" cards. I was gonna try to prove a point that "good" decks don't always need blue. Not really, but I just thought it would be funny to beat people down with bad cards. Watching the faces of people as they get the beatdown by supposed "bad" cards is pretty funny. But to try to stop the power for "blue" decks, I decided that their power starts from their card drawing so why don't I find a card that would make them think twice about drawing cards. This is where Chains of Mephistopheles came it. I play alot of stax so I remembered when they were using Chains in the welderless stax deck. This is the beginning of how I wanted this "bad" deck to evolve. Since I can slow down control with the Chains and Mask gets around "control" decks philosophy of denial, it was now on to graveyard hate. Thinking of how there are so may ways to eat the graveyard up, what would be a good efficient way to do it and also have walking body for beats and wretch pops up. Withered Wretch destroys so many graveyard decks it's not even funny. The key advantage for this deck did not arrive until ravinica. So, I was stuck with no efficient way to grab more cards until this card came out. It gets around Chains and has legs. And if you don't know what card this is, it's the Dark "Bob" Confidant. Well, this was a little history of how this deck came to be for me. But here's the decklist.

"The Hater" or "The Bad and Naughty Scrub"
created by mr_x

Artifact

4x Illusionary Mask
4x Phyrexian Dreadnought

Black

4x Duress
4x Dark Ritual
4x Dark Confidant
4x Withered Wretch
3x Chains of Mephistopheles
1x Demonic Tutor
1x Vampiric Tutor
1x Darkblast

White

1x Balance
2x Swords to Plowshare

Gold

4x Vindicate

Land/Mana

4x Badland
4x Scrubland
4x Bloodstained Mire
2x Swamp
1x Strip Mine
7x Solo Moxen

Sideboard

4x Rack and Ruin
3x Seal of Cleansing
2x Maze of Ith
4x Pyrostatic Pillar
2x Tormod's Crypt

Well, I'll give you my reasoning for certain cards and why I didn't include other.

Illusionary Mask: Control hates this card because it goes against their  strategy of denial. If control can't stop it, you can drop your creatures without worrying that it will be countered. Also, it's the key to MaskNaught.

Chains of Mephistopheles: Hates on mages who loves drawing. Makes them think about casting that blue "stunted growth".

Withered Wretch: Randomly wrecks graveyard decks. *chomp*

Dark Confidant: Gets your extra cards and works around Chains.

Swords to Plowshare: Gets rid of indestructable guy or just some random creature.

Darkblast: Welders best friend. Or not.

Balance/Mindtwist: Balance is broken. Mindtwist is random. But they are both a kick in the knuts.

Dark Rituals: Helps speed you up. Allows first turn MaskNaught easier. Help the mana light.

Duress: Just overall awesome. 'nuff said.

Vindicate: This is the questionable slot. Clunky but can nuke almost anything. Nuking almost anything wins out for me. hehehehe.  Very Happy

One's that didn't make it.

Necropotence: I died too many times to this and it's terrible when you can't do anything else and you can't get rid of it and you need the next draw. This is where confidant comes in.

Mana Crypt: Will kill you in the long game. I like it but I don't at the same time. I can live without it. There's enough accelerant. It doesn't help when confidant is doing the damage also.

Mana Vault: I like this better then the Crypt. I just didn't have this in the deck.

The sideboard:

Well, this needs work. I just pulled it out and played the deck this weekend. SO, this would be more likely what I would have had.

3x Red Elemental Blast
3x Pyrostatic Pillar
3x Seal of Cleansing
2x Rack and Ruin
2x Maze of Ith
2x Tormod's Crypt

REB's: A little more blue hate is never that bad.

Pyrostatic Pillar: Combo, the worst macthup. Glad I didn't play against that this weekend.

Seal of Cleansing: Nukes lots of things

Rack and Ruin: Back up for Seal and totally devistates stax.

Maze of Ith: Oath

Tormod's Crypt: A little more graveyard hate is never bad.

I bet you all are wondering why I'm posting such a terrible deck. Well, It's "bad" enough to top 4 at a Black Lotus tournamant so it must not be too bad. ehheheeh... ... Anyways, I didn't take notes so let me recap what I can remember.

Match 1 against Mean Deck Ichorid

Wretch owns games 1 & 2

1-0 (2-0)

Match 2 Against SS

Surprise MaskNaugt on both games with early chains

2-0 (4-0)

Match 3 against 5cStax

Early Masknaught goes the for game 1
Lots of draw and go because we both have 2 seal of cleansings out. Balance cleared the board because I only have 1 land. He has a bazaar out. I know he's waiting for a mask to seal it. I fetch for a WW, just incase he gets a welder. WW beats, He drops a 3sphere. in response use vamp to get a R&R. Kill his two mana sources. WW for the win.

3-0 (6-0)

Match 4 against SS (again)

I get crushed first game because I get my lands wasted and then stripped. no land came up.
Game two, smashed him down with masknaught.
Game three, more of the same.

4-0 (8-1)

The next two round, I just drew in. It was ICBM Oath and Spooky Stax...

Record after Swiss 4-0-2

Top 8

Another SS deck, but piloted by TK

Game One: Duress-mask-naught
Game Two: He had a first turn Old Man... took a little pounding for a bit... until I could drop a mask with two face down creatures. Attempts to steal on with Old man. Flipping over naught. Which got edicted. Next turn, go for 12 and another 12 after that.

Top 4

Another SS deck, piloted by I@n

Game One was the nuts for me. First turn, swamp, Duress, mox, sol ring, mask. He duressed me to see a land and a naught. Game from there on.

Game two: I got hasty. I had a masknaught on first turn. Shoulda baited, but went for it. Lost this one.

Game Three: Couldn't play crap. Got locked.

Oh well, it was a good run for it's first tournament. I almost didn't play this deck, but my friend "gustoh" told me to play it. It was fun just to see people get beat down by "bad" cards. Well, this is something too look at. Hopefully you guy like it and if you have any questions, please reply here. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Hey there yallz. It was great seeing such a big number of peeps at the tourney. Yeah, i only got 25, but I enjoyed the tournament. I don't get to play too often so it's fun when i get to play against so many good players. Yeah, the deck I played was a b/r/w masknaugt deck... but what i call it is "the hater". I almost didnt' play it this past weekend, but my friend "gustoh" told me to play it, and i was like "I guess". It's just a deck constructed around terrible duals and extra cards I had left over. I tried the deck with blue for control and draw, but thought it was more consistant and fun as a deck that played "bad" cards. I'll post the deck later, but it was fun to play with all yallz ICBMers. It's always a good time. Kind to think of it, that's who I played against all day except for my first game.

Well, this is the first tournament report that I have ever written and I didn't write down any notes. Everything is from memory and hopefully I don't make any big mistakes in this reporting. Forgive me if I can't remember your name or spell it wrong or anything of the sorts. Here's the Decklist that I played. And yes, I always run 61 cards. That's just me.  Mr. Green

My name is Xue Vang (a.k.a. "sNoOp" or "Mr. X") Well, I'm not a well known person in here or anywhere else on the magic circuit, except at the store I usually play at. But, I try to play when I get a chance to, because I love the game. I haven't really played anywhere too far from home (St Paul, MN), but I try to go to the local tournaments around here (Dreamers... that's all we have now  Sad), but haven't pulled anything really big. I have alwayz played $T4KS, but never really got that far because of my mortal enemy, energy flux, always screwed me over. Anyways, on to the report.

There was three of us on that morning as we started out from the twin cities. It was a nice drive out there, and we all were hyped up about playing in the vintage tourney. We were discussing how to help improve one of our friends deck and and help him metagame for the environment, because he had not really played in a vintage touney except on time before. Well, as we got to Madison, we went to go check in at our hotel and got our decks ready for the tourney. Well, except for me because it's always good to relax before a long day (or I should say "night") of magic. We got to the the place and checked out the dealers and looked around for "our" crowd from the cities. We chatted with them for a bit and then went to McDonalds. Ate some food and came back to sign-up for the tourney.

Match 1 against A. Jarvis playing Gifts (I think)

I can't remember much about this match, because it was pretty early in the day. But I am pretty sure I went 2-0

1-0 (2-0)

Match 2 against Mike Soly playing I.T.

Game 1

I went first turn Workshop -->Trinisphere.
Second turn Crucible, Strip. On to game 2.

Game 2

He had a fast start and I couldn't stabalize. I got Rebuilded and he went off.

Game 3

I mulled to six, because my whole first hand was mana except for a crucible.
The six was better because I had 2 chalice, mox, welder, land and another card.
But I ended up topping my other two chalices and had chalices with 0,1,2,3 to lock up the game.

2-0 (4-1)

Match 3 agains Ben Carp playing Chalice Oath

He's a cool guy. I played against him in Eau Claire before. I hate this match up though.

Game 1
I got lucky and locked was able to lock him out early.

Game 2 and 3

Simply to say, I couldn't find my REBs to stop flux. Oh, how I hate flux.

2-1 (5-3)

Match 4 against Eric Becker playing I.T.

Game 1

I dropped an early sphere of resistance. He played around the sphere and other lock pieces and dropped a Necropotence. Drew lots of cards, and Tendrils me to 6. He's back up to 20. Pays 9 more life. He finds no answers. Necros down to 5. I have a welder in play with a crucible. I drop a ring with a mountain in play. Thresh is there, thanks to bazaar. Welder beats and ring once. He scoops for next game.

Game 2

No lock pieces for me except for sphere of resistance. Plays around it, rebuilds and Tendrils me out.

Game 3

Was a long game, it went to time. Had out a chalice for zero and one very early in the game. But was unable to totally lock him out. He was in the game the whole time. It was getting close to time and I think he was at 11. I started out turn zero hitting him with a ring along with welder beats. Turn 2, I draw a Fiery Temper. I Bazaar that for 3 damage (but paying 1R because sphere was in play with only 2 rings and a mountain in play. The rest were workshops or moxes stuck behind null rod), with welder beats again. Bazaar gives me another Temper. I Temper him out on turn 4.

This has been a long day so far, I almost screwed up game 3 because I suck at magic.

3-1 (7-4)

Match 5 against Josh Wesley? playing Oath

This was one of the guys that I usually see and play with at the store. We were talking and didn't want to play against each other, but he said his tie breakers sucks and needed to win. I didn't want to play, because I hated oath, but oh well.

Game 1

I drop a first turn stacks and it sticks. That carries me the rest of the way as I continue to drop lock pieces.

Game 2

I get lucky and he doesn't draw into any searchers or oaths.

4-1 (9-4)

As the final round starts, my friends and I try to figure out if I could draw in. It happens that the only two people with twelve points is me and Ben Carp. With that being the case, we couldn't play each other again so we both had to play down. That sucks.

Match 6 against Ryan "Rhino?" playing I.T.

This was the third I.T. I played today. I hate this match up because I didn't have caps in my side or main.

Game 1

I couldn't do much, got rebuilded and lost.

Game 2

This game was the one that dragged on the longest. I couldn't establish a hard lock. Luckily I had a crucible/strip. Ended up with b-ring kill. All he needed to draw was a blue mana. He had a hurklls in hand, and was all ready to finish me off. Lucky.

Game 3

Bad. I had to mull to five. First hand b-ring, waste, 2 stax, uba and something else expensive. Second was hot had, but one mox only. Couldn't gamble. Anyways, to make this short, I couln't do anything and he comboed me out on turn zero. Oh well, gg.

4-2 (10-6)

Well, that was a long night and with many intense moments. Looking at my stats, I ended the night in 9th place. I suck. My friends and I went on to Denny's to digest the night and food. We prepared to go play Legacy the next morning. But we got there late and didn't get to register to play. Oh well, can't do too much anymore. So we sat around and chilled with our other friends that went to Madison on Friday. Well, That's it for my report. Til next time.

Props:
- To my friend (gustoh) for driving us down there and getting a place for us.
- To all my opponents for being great players and making it an enjoyable tournament.

Slops:

- For missing the Legacy tournament
- For eating fast food all weekend (I hate burgers)

Well, I’ll start by NOT going over how Gifts is played, but the choices of certain cards in the deck. Most notably is “Trash for Treasure. “Why is this terrible card in here? Well, It’s a just my nature in playing magic to have a backup to plans that may fail. Besides, It can be one of the cards that you can use when you gifts.

Another thing here is the combo choice. Flame Vault is a good and quick combo for this deck but it can be quite fragile at the same time. So you may change the combo to Severance Belcher. The only thing is it may a cost 1 more mana to play the combo out, but it doesn’t require you to play red. This may be a good thing or a bad thing, but I went with the choice that is a little faster, but then requires the red mana. Also, another backup plan is always the trusty beats of Darksteel Colossus.

I also wanted to be able to play around wasteland, so I included 4 basics in the deck.

The second Time Vault, could always be eliminated. But, I think it would be a good tinker target when you gifts. (e.g. Tinker, Vault, Flame, Burning Wish). This is when you're trying to get that vault out. It also allows you to go off if and have your opponent not expect the second vault. If you already have a vault in the graveyard, grab a Trash, Burning Wish, Flame, Recoup. Or some other comination, always depending on your hand.

I think Trash for treasure is an overlooked card and is great in gifts. Janky but works card and I see it.

This is a slightly different look, but with a twist with trash. Try it out, and give me some input to what you think can be done with this build.
12  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / "Broken?" Tutor on: March 30, 2005, 04:55:34 pm
I was just sitting back and thinking of a great tutor, but with a huge draw back. Check this out to see if it is too powerful, or is the drawback great enough for the power level it provides.

"Broken?" Tutor
Instant
B

As an additional cost to playing "Broken?" Tutor, remove the cards in your hand from the game.

Search your library for a card and put that into your hand. Your life becomes 1.

It would be awsome in combo, but I'm not sure about other types of decks.
13  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Trinisphere And it's Death blow to Players on: January 21, 2005, 06:01:15 pm
I personally think that trinisphere and dark ritual needs to stay to keep the format healthy. If you restrict these, you will be hurting combo, workshop/prison and workshop/aggro. Yes, a first turn trinisphere hurts sometimes. But, it's NOT something where you CAN'T play out of. That's why there are alot of people playing basic lands now. Trinisphere is a great card, but only in workshop decks. Its a good card, but it doesn't break the format. It isn't played in every deck. You don't see combo decks playing them. And what if you DO play a first turn trinisphere. What are the chances that you DON'T get stuck behind your own trinisphere after they wasteland your workshop.

Also, dark ritual needs to stay. Because, it is a good mana speeder and it's works best a powering out combo pieces. Combo needs to stay healthy in type one to allow us to have a healthy playing environment. Combo needs to win fast, if not, then control will just own combo.

Control is extremely good by itself already, but who wants to see a format where all the good decks just plays a slow game of control. There wouldn't be any variety for people to play and you will start to lose players. The reason WHY type one is so healthy right now is because of the variety of tier one decks that there are available to play.

Type one is a format where broken plays are made. It's supposed to be a fast format. If you don't like the speed or the broken plays, please go play standard and stay away from type one.

IMO, people who quit playing magic because of 3sphere should stick to casual. A true magic player learns how to adapt to the metagame. TOURNAMENTS are where people play to WIN. NOT always to have FUN. So remember, if you don't have fun at the tournament, adapt, or stay home and play casual games at home.
14  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Post POSSIBLE restrictions, what would you play? on: January 21, 2005, 03:28:54 pm
"IF" trinisphere and dark ritual get restricted. Then it will become a format dominated by control. We will then lose alot of decks that we have now. And the format will again shrink to 2 or 3 tier one decks. Probably gonna be all control on the top tier. This would cause a downward spiral of a format that has grown greatly over the past year and a half.

Instead of looking to restrict cards, lets think of the cards that shouldn't be on the list and see which ones actually deserve to be on the list and which ones should be ousted.

To answer the topic though, I would play control slaver or probably itatlian tog. But, like I said. I would then be playing control. And, that's all we'll probably see dominate.

Yes, i know that mask does a similar thing with less of a drawback. But you need that set card to get the combo going. I used to play masknaught, and found myself in trouble with out the mask. But yes, i see what your saying though. The thing about this card is that i doesn't rely on two specific cards to play out a combo. But, it does require 2 creatures. My thought when creating this card is to make a decent one where i would play it, but not overpowering where it ends up breaking the game. Masknaught i pretty game breaking, but i put into consideration of power in type 1 and also standard format.

Yes, this card IS a sorcery and the wording of this card should be different from what i have listed earlier. You should only be able to use it one. Unless you guys think that it would serve better as an enchantment. But then i think it would then be broken. Since you can always set it up with a platinum an keep on recurring the ability if you have enough creatures in play or able to get into play. I personally think that this as a sorcery will be fine. The correct wording should be as follows:

Recycled Life
BG
Sorcery

As an additional cost to play Recycled Life, sacrifice 2 creatures.

Search your library for a creature card and put it into play. Lose life equal to creature's casting cost.

I think that this would help it out clarifications of this card. But i was just thinking. What if it could do this:

Recycled Life
BG
Sorcery

As an additional cost to play Recycled Life, sacrifice 2 creatures.

Search any library or graveyard for a creature card and put it into play under your control. Lose life equal to creature's casting cost.

WOW! I would surely play this card. Who cares about the drawback. It's extremely cool to to try to pull it off. But give me some feedback on this little change[/i]

I do believe that i would be better suited balanced. It will then be like null rod, which affects all artifacts. And this in turn, affects all "counters". The thing about this design is that its extremely powerful against "counters". Maybe the part where itself can't be countered should be eliminated. So the card should read this:

"Aether Rod"
3
Spells cannot be countered by spells or abilities.

This will enable control to have a chance of removing it before it hits play. If this card is real, it would just be like a Xantid Swarm, except it would be an artifact. So, in saying this, I think if we remove the uncounterable part of the card. It will make it playable and still not overpowering.

Yeah, one creature seems good. But the only thing that made me think twice about that was this scenario.

Turn 1

Play Bayou. Tap Bayou for G. Play Bird or Elf.

Turn 2

Play Forest. Tap Bayou for B. Tap Forest for G. Play "Recycled Life". Fetch a "Darksteel Colossus" or something huge. Lose 11 life.

Your opponent loses 2 turns later.

I think it was a drawback that could be afforded to make it a little slower, while still having the same power level if resolved. I didn't want to make it a clone of "Tinker". It's similar, but with extra drawbacks.

But, a 1 creature sacrafice would be pretty interesting to see though.

"Rain of Death"
Sorcery
3BB

Each player sacrafices 3 creatures.

You may pay 5 life and remove the cards in your hand from the game rather then pay for "Rain of Death" casting cost.

"Rain of Dreams"
Instant
3UU

Each player draws 3 cards.

You may pay 5 life and remove the cards in your hand from the game rather then pay for "Rain of Dreams" casting cost.

"Rain of Life"
Sorcery
3GG

Each player puts 3 2/2 green "bacteria" tokens into play.

You may pay 5 life and remove the cards in your hand from the game rather then pay for "Rain of Life" casting cost.

"Rain of Fire"
Sorcery
3RR

Each player sacrafices 3 lands.

You may pay 5 life and remove the cards in your hand from the game rather then pay for "Rain of Fire" casting cost.

"Rain of Purity"
Sorcery
3WW

Each player sacrafices 3 artifacts and/or enchantments.

You may pay 5 life and remove the cards in your hand from the game rather then pay for "Rain of Purity" casting cost.

These are just stuff that i came up with. They're always ways to change them. Feedback would be great.

That's true. If it's a "good" control deck, it should be able to get out of it. Also, the card has no effect on other decks that don't play counters. It's sort of like a null rod for "counters". Do you think this should be an artifact or should it be another color, like, green or maybe red. I like the artifact part of it, because, it provides all decks with control hate.

Yeah, I can see it as a hoser card. But, I didn't want it to be a total lock against control. That's why I included the drawback on the card to sort of balance it. This is so that the card can only be used a set number of times, unless you can gain more life and permanents.

Recycled Life
BG
Sorcery

Sacrafice 2 creatures: Search your deck for a creature spell and put it into play. Lose life equal to creature's casting cost.

This is something that could be interesting.  I think that there is enough drawback for this card to sort of balance it.

Spell Barrier
Artifact
3

Spell Barrier may not be countered.

If a spell would be countered, you may pay 2 life and sacrafice a permemant: That spell may not be countered.

I personally don't like it when an opponents just grabs my deck and starts shuffling. I really don't mind, but i just wish they would ask first. I personally feel like my opponent thinks i'm cheating when s/he does this without asking. So, I think that a little request and light shuffling would be okay. It sucks when your opponent grabs your cards and then just shuffle it like it's their own and it looks to damage your cards.
