1  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Why are we chastising JP? on: July 18, 2004, 10:57:08 am
For reference, here's the article just as proof: Very Happy
http://www.starcitygames.com/php/news/expandevent.php?Article=7647

Since I am not a full member I obviously can't post in defense of JP meyer in the T1 forum so here goes...

First, Suicide Black is sub-optimal and yes if you splashed green for berserk, blue for draw and tog, red for shamans and some hate and shaved off black (I believe Toad stated that in the Sui-Black Forums), you have JPs deck with them big nice Togs. But hell even if that deck is sub-optimal it still has possibilities to win games, hell, it might even sweet a Tog deck.

Second, JP and his Tog didn't quite have the greatest hands and maybe a few playing errors (couldn't name any, except MAYBE that Hymn that was in the report). But his opponent DID make play errors with the wretch and the AKs in JPs grave.

So was it all luck? Probably not completely, but I'm giving JP the benefit of the doubt that since I consider him among the top 25 or 30 players on the site (don't know any of them in real life, but the way they all talk about magic, just seems like that) that he was 'Homosexual slur deleted' for lack of a better word. How often does Tog lose to Sui? seriously...

But it was kinda funny to see the Sui come out on top, must have had some secret tech in that deck Very Happy

-?

EDIT: Better word(s) may be Racist slur deleted... 'Antisemetic slur deleted'... ' Profanity deleted ' take your pick - Sorry it had to happen JP, just wish I woulda been playing the Sui Razz

Offensive language removed--consider this a verbal warning, and don't do it again.

EDIT: BtW, Skeletal is very nice in the deck Smile

Better then whispers do you think?

Also do you guys think I should go up more duress or more serum visions, and if so what do you think would be a good cut, I kinda like the idea of a mainboard matrix, it seems to be a bomb verse the right kinda deck and a good sideout spot

I'm sure it would be better with tog, for now i'm gonna try it without, in the future, i may try out some togs in there

Skeletal is a very nice tool for this deck to have PRE-DRYAD, simply because of the fact that it has diminished use (which was pointed out by MoxLotus I believe) because it needs cards in the Grave. So this card can be good or it can be bad. If you don't have the Dryad, you'll want to dig as fast as possible with this deck (probably meaning that you will tap out for the Skrying). However, since there may not be many cards in the grave (all the other draw spells, and you still didn't find the Dryad?) early game due to not playing other draw spells it may have diminished uses some games.

At this point though, the card is pretty versatile, you keep pointing out EOT for its use... This is a pretty key move, unless you oponent has UU open... so you better just have a FoW in your hand.

Whispers is better when the Dryad is out, do to the low cost and the positive card advantage. Whereas Skeletal Skrying is more of a utility search card, where it is much more effective while the Dryad is still in the deck somewhere since you will be looking for them... but that can also be a bad thing, because while you're looking for them, you want to be playing them early, and looking for them is a fundamental loss of a turn where you tap out for the draw (which could be countered even if you do EOT draws with it... Counters are instants, right?).

I think:

Whispers > Skeletal

Skeletal is just to inconsistent, because you may not have the cards in the graveyard to work it, or you may not have a large amount of mana in the beginning of the game to work it. If you're stuck at two mana you don't want to see a Skeletal in your hand, but you want to see a Whispers in your hand.

This deck can't be aggressive as It only runs 4 creatures. You run as many win conditions as GermBus ! It's a true Control deck, that wants to drop a threat and protect it to the end. And Psychatog is a better creature than Quirion Dryad at doing this.

I think that Toad has it right there. Because this deck SHOULD be running tog. Even though you don't want to, it is far superior, and both of them are hated against, Tog's hate just seems for more prevelant (spelling?) but it is SO far superior to the Dryad. Dryad is +1/+1 for ever spell, whereas Tog is +1.5/+1.5 FOR EVER CARD IN YOU SEE IN YOUR HAND (on the given turn ofcourse)

But isn't there a reason you are running the disruption? To get rid of what might hate you out? or kill / remove your Dryad? Why not just protect a Tog?

Right now the deck is good. But nothing good is gained if Tog is left out... If it is put in, it becomes a different deck, which is pretty much all that much stronger.

EDIT: BtW, Skeletal is very nice in the deck Smile

4  Eternal Formats / Creative / [Single Card Discussion] Lose Hope on: June 05, 2004, 05:26:50 pm
Yeah I see what you're saying. I was just wondering if it possibly deserved like one SB slot with a deck with wishes. Though Fire and Ice does have a much broader spectrum of effect.

Lose Hope - B

Target creature get -1/-1 until end of turn

Scry 2

Has anyone looked at this new card from 5th Dawn? I saw it and I thought that it wouldn't be a bad installment to something like a Tog SB as a one of for a Wish Target vs. Welders. The problem is that it is mainly only good for taking out Welders... The added Scry effect can also be pretty beneficial because it can help mana smoothing (somewhat) and has a similar effect of a Brainstorm (just not as strong)

So does anyone think that this has any possibility of making SBs for anti-Welders? Or is just having Null Rod, Wretch, Void, Matrix e.t.c. enough?

7  Eternal Formats / Creative / Fellow TMDers, I lost some cards during Tourney on: March 24, 2004, 01:32:25 pm
Sorry to hear about something like this

The same thing happened to me last year, which is why I am a budget player. I was at a tourney and left my cards unwatched for no more than a minute and they were gone (Was an early GAT/GRO with all the Trimmings) and since then I have just never even thought about getting power again.

Sucks major balls when this kinda stuff happens

Hehe, counting cards is like my specialty. I always look for something like your Misdirection thing, because I'm budget style, and I need all the help I get. Not to mention I keep a running count of cards in each deck in my head, possibilities of them drawing a certain cards after I Duress, after they shuffle, e.t.c.

I have been testing -1 seat, furnace, and tomb and +1 clockwork dragon, mind's eye, and gamble.

I play a budgety deck with Clockwork Dragon, and Mind's Eye (this is just a deck I made out of left over card I had) and they are tech as hell, probably better options for the Dragon, but Mind's Eye is really nice Turn 2. You will build so many cards up on it, it's great.
11  Eternal Formats / Creative / Old gems buried in past sets. on: January 31, 2004, 01:54:06 pm
Both of the cards look like fun combo cards, Vineyard is just 2 Free mana on the second turn, which would probably help a broken Long.dec alittle (Maybe) and the Ancestral could be decent for combo I guess. It seems like it would be a slightly bad choice for Long, but could be kinda cool in Dragon
12  Eternal Formats / Creative / Thoughts on this deck? on: January 31, 2004, 01:50:43 pm
Is there a reason why you chose Prot. from Black over Prot. from Red? (White or Silver Knight)

Prot. from black gives protection from what in the Mono Black decks arsenal? Just creatures? Negator can be chump blocked by River Boa, which then Regens... Silver Knight = Win vs. Sligh, but the deck is already a house vs. Sligh, so is that why you chose White Knight over Silver Knight?

I'm Eric Glover, I live in the boring-ass suburb of Sylvania, OH. As for T1, I don't get out to many tournies and I own no power (Damn). I play a lot of decks on apprentice but play in no online leagues, my real T1 deck is my budget Sui, which is pretty much shunned by the Tier 1 decks Sad. I am 16 and am a Sophmore in highschool, taking college courses sucks too Sad

Rocket Launcher would probably be a better kill condition than Fireball, considering it has better synergy with Workshop and Metalworker. Even so, it seems like a pretty fragile combo to me. You can't just throw the combo pieces in MUD and call it a day - it will lose its consistency because of the need to remove lock components for combo components. This means you'd have to build a deck around the combo, which means if you don't find your pieces early, you're going to have a much harder time of it. Combine that with the fact that it's a fairly easily disrupted combo, and it calls the concept's viability into question. Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, Swords to Plowshares, Crash, Oxidize, Null Rod, Mox Monkey, etc. etc. will stop the combo cold. Theoretically, Trinisphere could buy you a couple turns to combo out, since all of the aforementioned hate would be unplayable until turn 3. Might be worth trying.

I know, I was just saying that it could fit in pretty easily, but it may just bring up a new archetype, combo MUD or something like that Smile
15  Eternal Formats / Creative / Hey i am new..... My New Slaver deck thing on: January 25, 2004, 06:55:10 pm
Four ofs would be much better in this deck

x4 Force of Will
x4 Counterspell / Mana Drain (If you have them)
x4 Mishra's Workshop (only 1?)
x4 Metalworker

Bosh / Karn I guess is your choice, I like Karn personally, and why Vedalken archmage? Kinda slow and mana intensive it appears...
16  Eternal Formats / Creative / Darksteel Single Card Discussion - Voltaic Construct on: January 25, 2004, 11:09:09 am
This card could have possibilities, just look:

Turn 1: Workshop, Metalworker
Turn 2: Mountain, Metalworker for 6+ (not very hard to have), Voltaic Construct, untap Metal worker, Fireball

Turn 2 win for Welder MUD, pretty good I'd say, adds a Combo element, in a sense anyway. I think it is pretty nice.
17  Eternal Formats / Creative / Is Mono Black Suicide still viable in this year's meta? on: January 22, 2004, 09:49:12 pm
@HuntedWumpus: It's just a personal thing, but I prefer Negator over just about every card in the deck, and is essential in applying pressure with Sui. 4-turn clock first turn is always nice to have on your opponend turn 1.

What I am surprised to not see here is the inclusion of an LED

I think that's a good point, not to mention the whole Future Sight thing. This deck wants to combo out as fast as possible, and the Future Sight isn't going to drop first turn, and if it does, you probably could have won the game first turn. I think that card is more for the enhancement of the Mid-Late game Control decks, which is already great. But doesn't have much fitting in TPS.

-1 Future Sight
+1 LED

= More speed... every 7 or 8 hands Razz
19  Eternal Formats / Creative / Is Mono Black Suicide still viable in this year's meta? on: January 21, 2004, 09:44:55 pm
Thanks for all the replies, I think I have some new ideas for the deck, mainly including a big ass pile of disruption with Blood Moon. I had been planning on changing it to Bloody for awhile (I traded for all the pieces for that deck) but never actually changed. Thanx all
20  Eternal Formats / Creative / Is Mono Black Suicide still viable in this year's meta? on: January 19, 2004, 08:41:16 pm
Is it? Personally, as a player of Sui I really would like to know, because well, I've been getting beat pretty bad lately, by all these artifact decks Sad

For reference here's my deck:

-Creatures-
x4 Nantuko Shade
x4 Phyrexian Negator
x4 Hypnotic Specter

-Disruption-
x4 Duress
x4 Hymn to Tourach
x4 Sinkhole
x4 Chalice of the Void
x3 Null Rod

-Broken Fun-
xR Demonic Tutor
xR Demonic Consultation
xR Necropotence
xR Yawgmoth's WIN

-Mana-
x16 Swamp
x4 Dark Ritual
x4 Wasteland
xR Strip Mine
xR Sol Ring

Now, is this deck to slow? Its got the Duress, Hymns (In because of the lack of Misdirection), Sinkhole, Wastelands. Now the deck is obviously better w/ power, but I am a budget player, because I spend my money on more worth-while things (worth-while things in my opinion, if you want to buy power, that's your decision) and is Yawgmoth's WIN not practical enough? Do you get enough use out of it time and time again for it to be in the MD? My thought is no. Also, Hypnotic Specter has been a nice card recently for me. If it drops first turn, it is probably my favorite play, but 2nd turn and on it just doesn't seem good. Generally I find that my x4 Withered Wretchs help out with the matchup.

Card Picks:
Hypnotic Specter: Should I replace with x4 Withered Wretch? Or x4 Flesh Reaver? But if Flesh Reaver goes in, does Necro go out?

Chalice of the Void: This is in for all of those Moxes and Lotus out there, helps even out the field, at least in my opinion, or is it to much baggage for this deck?

Null rod: I love this card, just stops artifact decks, especially if I can get some LD going and take out some of their lands.

Yawgmoth's WIN: Viable? Or no?

Possibilities? Diabolic Edict? (not to practical if you ask me)

Plz let me know if you have any ideas
