Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / What is the most competive non-proxy deck I can play with my card pool?
|
on: March 03, 2010, 10:31:16 am

|
I am looking at playing my first Vintage tournament in 6 years. I don't think any proxies are permitted. I have all of the expensive and not expensive staple cards from 2004 except for Timevault, workshop, and Bazzaar, (in other words I have all duals, the P10+Drains). I also have almost all of the legacy staples Goyf, Wasteland, FOW, etc., etc. I have no idea what the metagame is, and of notable exception to the sub 100 rares I do not have Oath of Druids. This tournament may not even happen so I don't want to go investing a lot of money into it but I would like to bring something competitve to the table. Reccomendations?

Thanks for the reply and the info. Friday nights at the inquisitive sounds the most interesting. What's the format and is there casual gaming as well? Any trading? Thanks, Jim
For some reason, I can't send a private message: when I click on send, the page blinks but nothing appears in my outbox... I've listed my email on my profile if you want to communicate.
Format is 1.5. There is 2 tournaments usually a DCI tournament and a club tournament. The club tournament is a lot more casual. If there are not enough DCI players then we all get merged into a club tournament for the evening. Tradiing: Of course! Sending you an email.

The list may look a little random wit the one-ofs. Ill try to explain the particular choices later on.
Success speaks for itself. How many people were there? What was the idea behind the scepters (a controllish build?)? Why no mages? I'd love to know what you were thinking.

Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / [Announcement] Albuquerque 1.5 is BACK!11!!!!!11!

There are 3 tournaments this weekend for 1.5 in Abq. Barring I don't have a hot date I will be attending all three. I don't get anything for announcing these tournaments except hopefully better players in attendance to mitigate the scrubs. If you come to a tournament do tell me that you came, I am the "old guy" with blonde hair, so that I know to keep posting things up here. Friday: Gamegopher -------------- www.gamegopher.com7:00 PM Entry Fee: $6 Prize: Based on attendance: ~2 packs into the pool per entrant Sanctioned: I think so. Style: If sanctioned: DCI swiss, otherwise Double elim. It's back and all of the strong players in Abq are going to show this Friday...or that's what they told me. If you don't suck and only come to one tournament then you want to come here because the prize support is the best in town and all the regular heavy hitters should be in attendance. It should be awesome as the store owner rocks! Saturday: Active Imagination ----------------------------- www.aigamestore.com7:00 PM Entry Fee: $2.50 Prize: Based on attendance. Some amount of packs. Nothing extravagant but it is cheap to play. Sanctioned: Yes. This is how I will become the highest ranked eternal player in NM...mu ha ha ha. Style: DCI swiss Here is a mix of T2, extended, and 1.5 decks and the competition goes from excellent to terrible so be prepared to wade through a scrub or two before the battle begins. FYI: This is under a new owner and is a lot better than when Glenn used to run things! Sunday: Noble Collectibles on Coors ---------------------------------- PM me if you need directions or google it. 1:00 PM Entry Fee: $5.00 Prize: All entry fee is payed out in store credit which can be used at any of the Noble Collectible Stores. Sanctioned: Never. Style: Double elim. or round robin depending on # of entrants. This is hit or miss, and as far as the meta anything goes. Sometimes we have 5 people other times we have 12. We try to have a tournament regardless. Questions: Contact the stores directly or PM me.

Wow that was a good metagame! My Sunday round robin tourney was: RATS!!!! (coming in first, I was pwned by swarmyard), UGW thresh (mau, coming in second), Faerie Stompy (3rd.), Arcane GBU Rock, Mono-G Accelerate into huge dudes, and a weird MBC truffle shuffle hybrid.
I applaud Vroman for having the tourney and I say yay to "bus stop" (i.e. you could have found that pile of cards accidentally left at a bus stop) decks that take first.

Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Mail from Canada to the US

Hi I recently won an ebay auction and am waiting for a letter(cards) from Ontario to New Mexico (via normal post: standard letter mail). The cards were shipped on September 30th. how long is a reasonable time to wait given that this is an international letter that has to travel ~3,000 miles and we lost a post day in the US for Columbus day.
Cheers, JK

I feel that it sucks too but I understand the rule was made so that it does not require any interpretation. You present a non-legal deck for whatever reason you get a game loss.
Personally I would have let the guy put the card back into his deck if he was the one who noticed the card was missing. Actually in a sanctioned tournament one of my buddies noticed I was missing the card not me and he let me just put it back in. He also knows I have no interest in cheating. Besides he now gets to make fun of me as a "cheater", if hewould have made me take a game loss he would have been labeled as a "lame ass" that had to resort to getting game wins against me through technicalities.

This is an announcement that there is Sunday weekly 1.5 tournament at the Noble Collectibles on the West Side in the plaza with the Target in it. It starts at 1:30 pm sharp. Entry fee is $5 and all of the entry fee is given out in store credit. The card prices are at Scrye median but the guys there are willing to work with you especially if the card has some wear on it. I don't have a phone number off hand but you can look it up or PM me for more info.

Vintage Community Discussion / Non-Vintage / [Announcement] Albuquerque 9/29 Game Gopher
|
on: September 27, 2006, 09:19:14 pm

I just talked to the owner and this is definite. Last week there was no tournament due to everyone hoarding their money for the pre-release.
Where: Game Gopher in the plaza located at the NW corner of San Mateo and Osuna - look for a Pier 1 from the road. It is right next to Laffs comedy club. What: Unsanctioned 1.5 Tournament (most likely double elim), The entry fee is $6 and you are playing for packs. 2 packs per person goes into the prize pool. Prizes will probably go down to the top 4. How: to contact the owner for more info: 505 352 0593 When: 9/29/2006 Tournament begins at 7:30
Metagame: Wide open.

Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Ditching bulk commons-best methods?
|
on: September 04, 2006, 12:48:45 am
|
|
I have a few questions about ditching bulk commons:
1. What is the length (inches or cm) of 1000 ct. card boxes? 2. Is it worth mailing in bulk commons or do you just break even after you ship such a heavy box? 3. What is the best place to mail in bulk commons or is there success to be had on ebay with this?
SCG buys 1000ct. boxes of commons for $6. It cost me $1 for the box, and if they don't pay for shipping. I may actually lose money, on the other hand. Does anyone have a better idea? And yes, I am considering just giving them away.
Thank you, JK

Also apparently SonataOfTheCathedral was 6-0 in matches, 12-0 in games with Rb Goblins (Dromar's Crusade?) until he dropped from lack of interest.
WTF, he dominates the tournament and then decides to stop. He must explain this kind of idea! It is good to see so many people supportingTML Open. It seems that it is actually very encouraging becuase there seems to be more 1.5 dispersed around the country than 1 so to get that many people is fantastic!

I apologize if any of you tried to go Frday or Saturday. The store owner was just opening and wasn't open on Friday, which caused the reschedule. I went for a few hours on Saturday as I never had a time that the tournament may start.
If there was anyone that went to Game Gopher on either day or would just like to stay abreast of other local tournaments WHICH I KNOW GO DOWN then please post here or send me a PM.
Thanks, JK

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / stifling a memory jar
|
on: August 31, 2006, 10:39:06 am
|
|
I know that you can stifle cracking the memory jar, my question is if you can stifle the "At end of turn, each player discards his or her hand and returns to his or her hand each card he or she removed from the game this way."
So that you get to keep the hand off jar and not go back to the old one?
Since it says "At end of turn" (like an Astral Slide) I am guessing stifle will work, but the card isn't in play anymore so I am not sure.

They know I'm not gay... Ha. They're more or less teasing me because they know that myself and the 2 other guys in the guest rooms are alone in an all girls dorm. I had a chick today drag me into her room to ask me which thong was hotter (she held them up, but she was in spandex volleyball shorts and a sports bra).
Either she already considers you just a friend or she was asking you "Which one would you like to see me in more as I ... your dick?" Don't be a pussy, instead get some! Seriously, I have been known to give fashion advice to women quite a bit (I have impeccable taste) but I can safely say most of these chicks I was friendly with. You know this reminds of that song, "If I knew what I know now, when I was younger" any way, gg some ass! pussy >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> (MTG x 10000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000000000 00) Get my drift :B Good luck, JK
