1  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: VINTAGE on Magic Online is announced!!! on: October 22, 2013, 08:08:35 pm
Any thoughts on what this will do to the price of paper vintage cards, namely the power 9?  Or will it depend upon whether this spurs a greater interest in sanctioned paper Vintage (which, in my opinion, seems unlikely given the perpetual problem of power being really expensive)?
2  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Murdered for Magic Cards on: November 01, 2012, 01:02:19 pm
My condolences to Mr. Dugas's family and friends.  This is just shocking.
3  Eternal Formats / Southern U.S. / Re: 5/5/12 Vintage at SuperGames Inc. on: May 01, 2012, 03:04:14 pm
The announcement isn't clear regarding what the base number of proxies permitted is. It just says "5 additional for $5."

If it seems to good to be true...

Every time someone has offered me a card for less because he said it might be fake, it's turned out to be fake. Even if they're willing to take it back if it turns out to be fake or something like that, it's such a hassle and just runs an unnecessary risk of problems. However, if you're convinced it's real and you think the price is fair, go for it.

KMC sleeves are pretty much the bomb. Years ago I liked Ultra Pro, but their sleeves seem terrible to me now. KMC, on the other hand, has a great feel and really seem to last a long time.

Regarding double sleeving, putting the KMC perfect size/fit/whatever sleeves has worked well for me with the KMC sleeves.

Pssst...Legacy on Sunday!
7  Eternal Formats / Northeast U.S. / Re: Northeast Vintage Series, New York - 2/18-2/19 2012 on: February 13, 2012, 07:44:22 pm
If anybody's interested there is also going to be Standard for boxes ($15 entry, 10 reg, 11 start) on Saturday, Modern for boxes ($15 entry, 10 reg, 11 start) and EDH *(1 pack per person eliminated, plus additional prize packs, $10 entry, 12 reg, 1 start) on Sunday.

So no Legacy on Sunday?

I'm going to move Legacy to Sunday.

I'll fix the announcements on the various forums today.
So I'm trying to gauge just how many players I'm going to end up with for the Legacy end of the event...  How many of the Vintage players are considering staying for both days?  The response on TheSource has been lackluster, but I'm not married to Legacy being the format for the second day - if people want Modern (or something else) I'm open to that too.  Thoughts?

The current announcement has Legacy on Saturday, but you say here it's on Sunday. Which is it?

Also, I would only attend the Legacy event.
10  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: A new proxy system (hypothetical) on: December 08, 2011, 07:24:47 pm
Just penalizes players who have power (like myself), but don't have middle-range cards (Tarmogoyf comes to mind).

These proxies are so insanely awesome. Thanks for posting!
12  Eternal Formats / Eternal Article Discussion / Re: [FREE ARTICLE] Vintage Avant-Garde: Is Vintage Too Fast? on: October 25, 2011, 06:39:45 pm
I thought this was an outstanding article and said basically everything I've wanted to say about the format for a few months.

The only thing I missed was a discussion of Mishra's Workshop and stax. The coin toss is so important in this matchup. As opposed to thinking about whether a deck wins consistently, what if a deck's wins are simply arbitrary? This is how I see shops right now, as whether I've won or not has hinged significantly on whether I won the die roll. The idea that the outcomes depend more and more on the die roll lately has not been discussed (though the article did indirectly touch on this in discussing the early game counter wars).

Really, it comes down to the fact that if I wanted to spend all day traveling to and from an event to roll dice, I'd go to Atlantic City. This format is in need of a major overhaul (and I don't think Brian goes far enough, though it's a good start). Until then, it's pretty unlikely I'll be going to an event any time soon. Opponents of what Brian has suggested can (and in all probability will, since I doubt changes will be made) continue to play the format as is. However, I think the Vintage community, at least in New England, has started voting with its time and money; there are just better ways to spend both.

Steve,

1) In the Top 8, did you win the roll?
2) How much did this matter?
14  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: MTG at New York Comic-Con this wknd? on: October 13, 2011, 06:33:47 pm
Went last year, I thought it was highly overrated. There was some Magic (I didn't play in any of it), but not a lot.
15  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Interest in Modified B/R List Tournament? on: October 05, 2011, 06:08:44 pm
I'm willing to run this as the side event for the N.Y.S.E. at the end of the month.  I'll note it on the advertisement for the event in the other forum.

I expect that participants would likely just pull the cards they can't run out of their decks and run their "normal" decks otherwise (if possible). Or just not play at all. Participants would need to prepare for this event with such drastic changes, something that I don't think people will do for a side event.

I'm glad to see that you feel strongly about your idea.  As things stand now, I'm uncomfortable taking the financial risk of guaranteeing prize support for a tournament like this by running this as the main N.Y.S.E. for the month.  If you feel this strongly though, I can get you in touch with the various store owners you'd need to speak to in order to run the event, a judge who would potentially be interested in working your event and some people who may be able to sell you prize support.  If you feel strongly about this, you should act on it.

I really don't have the time to organize an event and instead was hoping that there would be a positive reaction to this in the hopes that someone else might run one.

I expected some negative reactions, though not this overwhelmingly. I guess this answers the question for the time being.

You guys are focusing too much on the specific cards chosen. The point is more to just shuffle things up. Let's say Force of Will and Gush were restricted as well, as suggested. Does that make a difference?
18  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Interest in Modified B/R List Tournament? on: October 04, 2011, 10:20:29 pm
Piggybacking off the "old school" Vintage tournaments from a while ago, I was wondering if there would be any interest in a tournament featuring a modified B/R list, probably something along the lines of:

Time Vault is banned
Mana Drain is restricted
Dark Ritual is restricted
Mishra's Workshop is restricted
Bazaar of Baghdad is restricted

Assume the tournament would otherwise be a normal unsanctioned Vintage tournament with the traditional entry fee, proxies, and a reasonable prize (say an unlimited Mox). Would you travel for and attend such a tournament?
19  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: What's the best show currently in production? on: October 03, 2011, 08:16:23 pm
Sherlock - 2010

Wanted to emphasize this one. Not bad at all. At only 3 80-minute shows, you can easily blow this one on Netflix instant play.

If checklists sell for more than $0.03 we should all lol and puke ourselves to sleep.

lol, which bubble is filled in suddenly becomes really important. Maybe people will get artist altered ones with some fancy bubbling. I can see it already!

Perhaps this new mechanic also opens the door to a change of the standard magic card back. I know they've wanted to change that roughly forever.
22  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Rumors/Previews/mtg.com articles on: August 28, 2011, 08:40:12 am
Strongly dislike this mechanic. What a huge pain. What were they thinking?
23  Eternal Formats / Northeast U.S. / Re: N.Y.S.E. XVII - 8/27 Beta Mox Jet Tournament on: August 25, 2011, 08:17:36 pm
I'll be there come hell or high water!

You might get it, between hurricane and tanker fire.
24  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Irene on: August 25, 2011, 06:31:18 pm
I'll add to this that I live right across the street from the East River in NYC. As much of a pain as it will be, if they tell me to leave, I'm going to leave. You should do the same if told to do so. Take this hurricane seriously.
25  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Re: Rumors/Previews/mtg.com articles on: August 22, 2011, 05:58:07 pm
Can you imagine trying to read the microtype with the 5 ability planesalker.  Magic players are going to go blind from this.

lol, "DeWittler." I'll have to use that one in the future.

While I'm flattered, David Earley = not attending. Sorry. Chris Pikula is probably a better pick for that slot.

Chris Pikula conspicuously absent!
