@ oshkoshhaitsyosh
First off, totally agree with all your points; esp regarding Dark Conficant/UBW Bomberman shell. I also think that UW is the way to go with Bomberman and how the deck operates and plays out.
Moving on, what is your approach to the Metalworker/Forgemaster matchup? Your sideboard suggests:
2 Swords to Plowshares 2 Disenchant 2 Steel Sabotage 1 Devout Witness 1 Hurkyl's Recall 1 Mindbreak Trap (Maybe? your previous posts suggest you side this in)
Is this enough to get through this matchup? What cards do you tend to side out and what hands/specific cards are you looking for and to what endgame i.e. beats, tinker or combo?
Is this kind of shop deck not highly represented in you area?

I remember playing with Ancient Tomb using a red splash with Timetwister and Enpty the Warrens to get around Stax boards i.e. Hurkles/Twist and/or Fow a turn 1 sphere, make a few goblins would be the clasisc plays.

Cage not just for dredge and oath, it also hoses snapcasters and tinker/BSC. I like that kind of flexability in one card.
If I were to aim a little more to storm combo and less on bobs for example, I would switch the leaks to pierces, cut maybe 2 mindscensors for 2 Cliques and have a few flusters between main and sideboard, probabily cutting FoF and Needle in the main.

I came top 4 with this list over the weekend: http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=44785.0 4) Kenneth Cheong – U/W Bomberman 4 Flooded Strand 4 Tundra 3 Island 2 Cavern of Souls 1 Plains 1 Polluted Delta 1 Tolarian Academy 2 Auriok Salvagers 3 Aven Mindcensor 4 Trinket Mage 3 Jace, the Mind Sculptor 1 Time Walk 4 Force of Will 3 Mana Drain 3 Mana Leak 3 Mental Misstep 2 Fact or Fiction 1 Thirst for Knowledge 1 Ancestral Recall 1 Brainstorm 5 Moxen 1 Black Lotus 1 Mana Crypt 1 Sol Ring 1 Pithing Needle 1 Grafdiggers Cage 1 Æther Spellbomb 1 Engineered Explosives 1 Sensei’s Divining Top Sideboard 2 Grafdiggers Cage 3 Swords to Ploughshares 1 Serenity 1 Disenchant 2 Seal of Cleansing 1 Tormod’s Crypt 3 Stoneforge Mystic 1 Library of Alexandria 1 Batterskull I use to play Bomberman during the Flash era to great success and many wins so I was happy to re-sleave my salvagers. Notable card choices:2 FoF - I cut one Jace for a FoF purely due to UU mana costs. Cavern of Souls, though amazing as it is vs Blue decks is a real hamstring on the mana. I added a second as I felt this deck needed velocity and draw power pre/post combo. 3 Dain over 4 - again, same issue as above. Many times I need a second or third blue source, top deck Cavern and I want to cry. 1 Brainstorm - Many bomberman players don't play this because you don't want specific cards. Sure, in the main deck, but post board, you are looking for that disenchant or that grafdiggers cage. 1 maindeck P.Needle - I side this card in all the time and I am always a fan - put this to personal preference 3 Mana Leak - This slot has jumped from Snares to Pierce to Flusters and a combination and I couldn't get the right mix. I went with Leak for a few reasons. 1) The UU mana issue comes to mind again (note I play 4 tundras to extra blue and an extra white after SB) and 2) Land+mox opener allows you to counter Bobs, Oath and Stax pieces giving you less dead cards in the main. 0 Tinker/BSC - I had this in the MD/SB along with a SB Mystical for a while to sidestep any graveyard hate/massacare/null rods people bring in. My experience is that it usually less versitile than the stoneforge package. My games were: R1 Forgemaster 0-2 R2 Dredge 2-0 R3 Bant Fish 2-0 R4 Burning Tendrils 1-1-1. We played it out and I lost to a top decked Burning Wish. I have tested this configuration and I agree with most posters here that: - It indeed has great game vs blue decks - Crushes Dredge - Not too shabby vs rituals though my matchup vs tendrils is a bit weaker without Clique and having leaks over flusterstorm - Favoured vs non god hand oath However, those out there who are saying that they smash shops must be running good. I will conceed that post board, Bomberman with up to 3 disencant effects, 3+ swords and either sabotage/stoneforger packages give us the edge against traditional MUD/Matello, BUT there is no way we are good against Forgemaster. I played around 10 games after my first round match, ON THE PLAY and won once; and that was due to mana crypt flips! I kept an opener with turn 1 SFM backed with a STP, a seal of cleansing, force and a leak and still lost that one. My issue is that they play too many threats and too many varied threats - hellkite, titan, karn, battlesphere, wurm and this is AFTER the must stop Golem/Forgemaster/Metalworker. It's not like we can just sit around and sack a perm to smokestax anymore against these guys. If people on this thread can give me a detailed analysis/gameplay on how to win this matchup, I would really appreciate it.

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Re: Ethics question

There is a fine line between telling your opponent that if he happens to concede, you'll do something and offering your opponent something in exchange for a concession. This is the former in my opinion and I do not see any bribery or any reason to DQ anyone in this situation. I'm getting very confused with what wording = DQ and what wording = OK So if I said "I offer you the current information of my hand in exchange for your concession" does that warrent a DQ? I think what i'm (and probabily lots of people here) trying to find out is what the acceptable short cuts are without getting DQ for it (or screwed by your "unethical" opponent). For example, many times someone gets a Timevault combo on you, and we say "show me your win con and I will scoop" (or "I will offer my concession in exchance for the information of your tinkerbot" ). So they just go and look through their deck for inkwell(or whatever) and I scoop. I recently found we cannot short cut to this! So basically, I could have gone and "mised" a win by saying "judge, my opponent looked through his deck illegally etc." Is it illegal because of my wording? or the action? etc

Thanks for sharing your lists Dice! As i suspected, your using duress over misd.
One card I noticed is your not running imperial Seal - which is fantastic. I highly recommend it. Infact, I am loving top deck tutors in Dragon so much more right now. Interactions with your compulsion and bazzar and darkblast (i'm trying now, and its insane) is just to die for.
@ your compulsion list - is it very wierd looking indeed! Does it control the game then bust out the dragon combo much like painer/tezzeret decks do? The list seems it would love squees! Did you try them?

I've been testing Spooky's AdTendrils versus WGDX (4DA, 1 Mulldrifter, 3 Duress/4FoW)and WGDX has a superior game 1 on account of being both the faster combo and better disruption base. I therefore think its a mistake to overboard against AdTendrils; I am satisfied with bringing in 3 CotV only.
This is really good news! I'm guessing Duress is the key here? Also, after testing quite a few configurations, I am dissatisfied with multiple Mulldrifters and 0 DAs - I suspect that the configuration of 4 DA and 1 Mulldrifter is the right one. Plus, I believe that multiple Mulldrifters make the most sense if the number of animates is elevated to 8-9, but that ends up cutting into the disruption count and I think the deck needs FoWs and Duresses to deal with the fast combo decks more effectively.
I tend to agree with your Mulldrifter/DA assessment. As to your deck sturcture, did you basically run +3 duress, +1 Da over the 2 Misd, Brainstorm and CoV in my/Noah_33's list? If so, in this configuration, do you have "trouble" getting FoW+Blue card? or does duress fill that gap for you? Also, whats your sideboard plan atm? Thanks Dicex!

With the return of long decks, its has to be correct in speeding up the combo to race Game 1 so for now, i'm sticking with DA's, although i would ove to hear your testing results fury on mulldrifter. I'm tempted to add lotus petal to increase turn 2 wins. If long is heavy, is it correct then to play duress effects main?
Game 2/3, I was wondering what the best SB plan is. Oath/noughts, xantid swarms etc seem to be useless/too slow vs storm combo. My first thought was to splash white for chants and abeyance, seeing as they double as combo/yard protection as well as combating storm. Furthermore, the white splash grants access to kataki and serenity for the stax match.
The only problem is the main is tight, and it may hamper the combo. So a possible fish switch may be correct. The Ad Naus thread shows TK UW cannonist.dec being the main tendrils threat, so having a board of cannonists, meddling mage, abeyance/chalice can be devestating.
What board ideas are everyone running atm?

Fury: First off, thanks so much for your primers and work on this deck, it really helped my understanding of the deck.
On to your topic of discussion, I tried a version of dragon with something like (not exactly sure of the numbers) 9 animates, 3 mulls, 3 DA's, 3 bazzars. The draw power was insane, and the best is getting round thorns. I did find it "difficult" to dump WGD in the yard, so adding the 4th RtR is a good idea.
My problem with the deck vs the traditional build is i found is slower, since most instances, you lead with land - tutoring for a bazzar. Next turn dump DA's, mox, DA for cards. Mulldrifter needs an animate or another turn. In the mulldrifter case, you can lead with land, then turn 2, land mox, evoke. But you lack the dump ability if you draw a dragon. Also, you loose the intuition stack of WDG/DA. Your dependance on bazzar has shifted on to reliance on animate.
I think its a meta thing though, since running DA's in a more aggro field is scary. Btw, how does it free up slots? Are you not replacing 3 da's with 3 mulls?

theLastGnu: dan?
Mulldrifter has a few options: 1. You can evoke for 2 cards and use excess animates to bury opponents in CA. Seriously. 2. It acts as part of the kill (to stop the loop) in intuition piles 3. You can go off without bazzar, reads or intuition in hand if its in play - have it in play when looping either hardcasted or animated or evoke (require necromancy in responce to the evoke sac trigger).
Point 3 is the most important. I can't think of anymore +'s for good old mully atm.

I'm so glad you did well with this arctype! I love how you used my list too (a bit different sideboard but oh well.) I still live by Mis Direction in this new format over the Duress effects. Thank you for your list! I agree entirely that misd > Duress in at least this build. Waiting for an extra black source just gives your opponent an extra turn. @ your list, I did tweak it a bit, but in the end, it was just better without any changes, and i think the numbers are pretty much spot on. If there is any change, it would be adding another orchard for brainstorm/CoV in the main to get a slightly better synergy between MD/SB but its not hugely important. The other card was darkblast over the brainstrom. I found brainstorm more bad than good interms of WGD mode, and with darkblast, it not only deals with welder (which is such a beating against this deck - weld in crypts/slaver/memory jar if you dont have intution and need reads to win), but opens lines of play like - "VT/impseal for dragon, dredge darkblast, animate and win via blue cards" which is fan-frekin-tastic Its also got the added bonus of killing orchard tokens which ended up killing me in the quarters vs stax. Have you made any recent changes to your lists since your last tourney?

Hey all, first off, I just wanna say thanks for this threads thoughts and idea's, it really helped me with constructing and learning how to play the deck. I just got 3rd in a small tourney, loosing 2-1 for stax after a long fought battle, but 2-0's all matches (bar the one i mulled to 4...sigh).
List: TD - WGD 4 WGD 1 Oona, the Drag Queen 1 Mulldrifter
3 Animate Dead 3 Necromancy 1 Dance of the Dead 4 Force of Will 2 Misdirection 1 Brainstrom 4 Intuition 3 Read the Ruins 3 Deep Analysis
1 Demonic tutor 1 Vamp Tutor 1 Imperial Seal 1 Chain of Vapour 1 Ancestral Recall
5 Moxen 1 Black Lotus 1 Sol Ring 1 mana Crypt
4 Bazzar of Bagdad 2 Underground Sea 4 Polluted Delta 2 Island 1 Swamp 1 Tropical Island 3 Forbidden Orchard
Sideboard: 4 Oath of Druids 2 Hellkite Overlord (can be 1) 2 Bogarden Hellkite (can be 3) 2 Energy Flux 4 Chalice of the Void 1 Echoing Truth
I did have timewalk in the main/side, but it turned out rather lacking. Chalice was also not to good, and usually not sided in, but that may be to the high stax matches i played. I also think that energy flux may not be correct, and hurkuls/rebuild is better. Chain of Vapour is really good, but not against stax as much. I also think a darkblast can fit the deck well is space permits. If I had to do it again, I would:
-1 Hellkite Overlord/Bog Hellkite +1 Hurkles Recall / Darkblast
The math on Hellkite overlord and Bog Hellkite is such that you just need to oath twice to win in most cases. The only reason you want multiples is to reanimate it without oath. For the metagame, I would cut the chalices for more bounce.
A QnD report:
Round 1: Cooroo - tezzerets G1 - I'm on the play, and open with delta. Coo tinkers for DSC and plays Gorells shaman. I DT for chain, chain the DSC, intuition for WGD/WGD/Deep anal, Necro WGD --> infi mana, into inftution for Oonna, Mulldrifter and whatever. Stop the loop my animating either oona/drifter and eat the library, then anal him.
[Side the oath plan]
G2 - I have turn 2 Oath, Cooroo has turn 3 Tezzeret w timewalk acceleration, but Hellkite overlord eats plainswalkers and other dragons kill him soon after.
Round 2: Tim - 5C stax G1 - I open with Sea, crypt, imp seal for animate. I force an attempted gorella shaman. I drop land and pass. Tim has sphere and waste - response I intuition for WGD/WGD/Oona - for some reason he puts Oona and WGD in the yard. I untap and animate. If he gave me oona, i stop the loop by animating his gorella shaman, then hardcast the oona.
[Side in the Oath plan]
G2 - Tim has Leyine, and bazzars away a trisk and stuff. I have land and pass. I Fow a Welder, then drop moxen and necro his trisk. He plays smokestax and crucible, and i animate his welder and well...yeah....you get the picture.
Round 3: John - Blue metalworker combo At this point everyone is expecting i'm on Oath, but unsure as to what's going on! G1 - I mull to 4...John opens with turn 1 chalice @ 2. I have Force for Metalworker to stop the staff combo, but trisk eventually kills my really bad draws.
[Side 1 WGD for 1 Hellkite overlord]
G2 - I open with sapphire, solring. John has again turn 1 chalice @ 2. I dont draw land, and read the ruins for 2, droping dragon, untap, drop forbidden orchard and necromancy the dragon, make many mana, and intuition for Onna, mulldrifter and deep anal.
[Side the oath plan now that john knows whats what]
G3 - John opens with turn 1 Chalice @ 2 AGAIN! I Fow, and...HE FOWS! WTF!? So i play some mana to offset stips, then bazzar away a hellkite overlord, necro it and beat face Ftw...LOLS!
ID for top 4. With the smaller than expected turnout, the TO had to cut to top 4, and is already loosing $, so no one really minds.
Top 4 - Tim again - 5c Stax G1 - Tim has DT (countered), Trinisphere, tinker (Sundering titan) and smokestax within the first 2-3 turns...i'm not in this one.
[Side Oath - but he does not side his leylines as it turns out]
G2 - turn 1 energy flux and oath wins this after some very close welder and 2 smokestax's.
[ i resideboard, but he is sideboarding too, and settle to stick with the oath]
G3 - I keep this hand - DT, VT, Lotus, 2 Moxen, Land, Recall - broken as, but Tim opens with chalice @ 0 and VT's for workshop after a mull - very risky as the gemstonemine he used was his only land souce! He follows up with tripple spheres. I am in the game for a long time, but the deck is not nice to me, not drawing land. I have very few outs and don't hit any...and die after a very long and tense game.
Anyways, thats bout it, hope you enjoyed reading!

I would have thought that fatesticher works better in the mana builds. The above list already looses most of manaless's power in the form of less disruption, so why not go for all out speed then? (my stance may change if there a build which can use fatesticher along manaless disruption).
Using Sapphire, Petal and LED, and Witness, along with the usual careful study, breakthrough and colossum, you should be able to goldfish very very consistant turn 2's (or increase the %), since the choke point of the deck's speed is the ability to get dudes on the table for the leathal dread return - fatesticher solves that problem - purely becasue you can get a creature on the table. Untapping bazzar is gravy.

Just an update for Oath fans:
Just won a mini tourney with the list (13 players). Only changes were to the SB and a 3 Sieze, 1 Duress split, which was very good actually! On scroll, all I can say is scroll has been good so far - even though 90% of the time your tutoring for permission, 10% its for something like impulse (burned recall aready) when in top deck wars or something like that.
I was getting hi 5's for negate all round...good card.

Suicideking - I commend you on a very nice build and congrats on your lotus wins! I have now fallen in love with negate...(I was trying mana leaks before your list).
I have to echo the point that 1 scroll rack is perfect...you don't wanna cast it early (not even turn 2), but later, its has been brillant (esp when you have loam also from the board - its a mini tax/rack!). In terms of the oath dudes, I'm sorta missing the vigilance factor, but it is necessary, and the regen ability + fire breathing is not dead at all!
2 questions: 1 - you are suggesting the possibility of - Merchant Scroll for + Misdirection. Is this because you usually tutor for protection with scroll, and rarely recall/bounce? Thus would rather draw your scroll target to protect your oath a turn earlier? Just wanted to hear the theory behind it.
2 - Thoughtsieze vs duress - i found that the sieze can be a bit of pain esp when spirits are harassing you. Were siezes a meta call for you? i.e. you wanted to nab welders/meddling mage or something? or you used it because its strictly better? I have been trying 1 duress, 3 sieze, and the duress "fizzed" once, and made me pick the non-optimal target once.
Well done in creating the deck, and thank you in advance!

Why use this guy to find combos when this guy just wins by himself? You never miss land drops - artifact lands and moxen, and dont forget the garruk "untap two lands (sapphire and seat of synod)" for draw/permission, then, when you wanna win, swing with your mana? Its like garruk/crucible/Karn/rude awakening all in one!
As for the CC, you can drain into him (tapping out if you must), then untap two artifacts for mana leak or drain (if your lucky to have seat or something) or tutor for lotus or play timewalk (wins with a heavy mox draw) or go trinketmage mode... the list goes on! He's insane!

Nehptis: My meta is also very shop heavy and have the same chalice of the void delima's. I don't think you can cut them though, they are just too good, especially with null rods (I am running 2 at the moment due to a high CS and MUD presence). I have won 50% of my games just chalicing and factory beating. If you have welder troubles, try a darkblast. If you run life form the loam, try flame jab (works well). Both work better in tyrant builds but still good with angles. With the stax meta in mind, I am favouring the Angel plan. Tyrants are the better creature, and Tyrants in a shop meta is theoretically sound, however, my experience shows that it requires land to win - and dropping an oath into a board of wires/smokestax/crucible/strip/spheres is not that hawt when you need lands to hurkle them. Angels just win on their own, and quicker, only loosing to duplicants most of the time (but SSS > dups). It may be the way I play vs stax, but basically I just want to resolve as oath, not resolve and play spells a turn. Its very hard with 8 spheres, to the point that I was considering adding maindeck artifact hate and SB out the oaths and put in goyfs and stuff...yeah.... The other card to try over impulse is telling time. Its working very well, only that it doesn't put a drawn creature into the deck, and lat-nam's legacy is nice but not really not that nice... hope this helps

Long time Oath player, love the deck. I was wondering (mainly directed to AngryPheldagrif) but anyone, feel free to answer:
1. Was the main reason of "substituting" Needle for Null Rod due to the addition of top (and thus the change in mana base)? Or is it JUST due to CS/Ichy metas. Have you tried Scroll Rack over Top?
2. I am another person who plays chalice @ 1 frequently - so why chain of vapour? I have been using Rushing River (over wipe away) successfully - is the higher casting cost the only deterant? I would prefer Echoing truth but been burnt buy opposing chalice @ 2 before.
3. You have gone from 3 Platz plan to 2 Tyrant. Do you forsee going to 1 Tyrant 1 Witness/Trike (with MD Needle) and modifying accordingly?
4. Do you ever see yourself going to 2 beatdown angles ever? Or does the loss of brainstorm make you want to run easily hardcastable creatures?
5. I am currently running 2 waste, 1 strip, along with "Old Skool Life from the Loam" (and crop rotation, 2 mishras). Do you think this plan still has some merits? Or is running more land/wastes better? (note: my current land base is very close to the proposed Platz base.)
Thanks in advance peoples.

This is pretty dissapointing. I just played in a Vintage tournament today and I really felt like the biggest edge I had in the blue mirrors was the proper usage of Brainstorm. Timing the card, playing it right, and really maximizing its value are so integral to winning that restricting it really seems like it takes a lot of the skill that we know and love out of Vintage. So agree. Majorly heart broken. I really didn't mind seeing gush, flash, scroll go (it was coming), but brainstorm, thats the key. Brainstorm is such a subtlely rewarding card when played right, not just in conjunction with fetches. Honestly heartbroken, and feel lost. I can pretty much scrap 80% of my decks.
