Type 1 5 Proxy Tucson, AZ Mox Pearl 11/13 Amazing Discoveries Start time 10:00 am. Cost: $15 to enter 5 proxies allowed (use sharpie on basic land) 1st prize is Mox Emerald (16 people minimum). If <16 people, prize will be all the cash value from the tourney. Tucson has a vibrant Type 1 Community, despite their size relative to Phoenix, so I fully expect more than 16 people. Address: Amazing Discoveries 2928 E. Broadway Blvd. Tucson, AZ 85716 (520)-320-0338 Directions: Take I-10 to Broadway Exit. West on Broadway It will be on South (right) side about 3 miles down. Unfortunately, I will not be able to make this even myself, as I will be taking most of my Phoenix-based staff to an ASU Football game and tail gate this day. However, I strongly encourage people to attend this event, as they should be a good crowd. Keith

Thanks to everyone for the good turnout today (22 players). There would have been more, but the carload of people could not make it because their car broke down just outside Vegas.
3 of the Top 4 players were from the Tucson area. Miklos Szidarowsky (4cc Control) and Jared Sandler (Fish) decided to draw in the finals, and will share the NM Mox Ruby and the $50 for 1st and 2nd.

Hi Gandalf:
You stole my line "Other than that, it looks like it's going to be a great event... too bad I am several thousand miles away"
Since I am out here in the desert, I miss 99% of the great tournaments held on a regular basis out east.
I was at Origins, though, and have my plane ticket for the SCG event in Richmond on the 23rd.
Regarding the format of the proxies, this was the preference of the owner. He has been running 5 proxy events regularly, and I don't remember any problems with the slips of paper.
Given what you have said about card manipulation, though, I will ask the store owner to encourage people to cut opponent's deck after every library manipulation and to do thorough side shuffles just to keep everyone honest.
I will also try to talk to the store owner and try to get him to do the proxies the SCG way (land cards with sharpies used to list card and text). (I will brand land cards for others to use in case I am successful in getting this changed).

Archives / Archived Vintage Tournament Forum / What Deck Types to Expect
|
on: October 11, 2004, 07:38:42 pm
|
|
Here is the Metagame you can expect at the Tournament Saturday. (Depending on what the players from Tucson, Flagstaff and Las Vegas bring, this may change)
The Phoenix area is a very aggro-heavy enviroment, due to few players having full power. (I am one of the few exceptions).
The store runs smaller 5 proxy T1 events a couple of times/month, and there is another local store that runs T1 on Tuesdays. Food Chain Goblins is very popular, as is SUI, so expect to see alot of both of these decks.
One or two players run Dragon, so you will see that too. Only one person has been running Stax, but I feel it is a very effective build. Expect to see a couple madness decks as well.
If this event draws a decent turnout, the store will try to run tournaments for Power about every other month, so I hope many of those who have contacted me can make it.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Shuffling the Opponent's Deck: Serious Discussion
|
on: September 30, 2004, 01:51:28 pm
|
|
Razvan:
You are correct that there is a right and wrong way to go about shuffling someone else's deck. I don't think most of us have an issue with an opponent shuffling if it is done right. (I certainly don't).
I also think that the opponent should show at least the tiniest bit of courtesy by saying he would like to shuffle the deck, rather than to just grab the deck and go nuts shuffling it.
Unfortunately, most of the yahoos the posters are referring to can't even spell courtesy, let alone practice it.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Shuffling the Opponent's Deck: Serious Discussion

I have to agree with everyone else that just grabbing your opponents deck and shuffling it without permission is extremely disrespectful, expecially when they take little care in the shuffling they do.
From observing the people who do this sort of thing, almost without exception they strike me as the sort of people that will be spending most of the rest of their life in and out of prisons (social misfits who have difficulty functioning in society in general).
The first thought that always goes through my mind when someone does this to my own deck is to snap the person's neck (and I've never met a Magic player with whom I feel I would have difficulty accomplishing this.) However, being a rational human being, I can control my more primal thoughts, and usually ask my opponent to either table shuffle my cards, or call a judge to shuffle the cards.
On the subject of my opponent's insufficient/stacked shuffling of his own deck, generally asking him to shuffle a bit more is enough. If not, I usually do pile shuffles (3 piles if I really think he stacked his deck).

Zherbus: I tried out the 4cc with Tinker several months ago, and tested it for a few weeks. I agree with the comments that most of the suggested cards other than the Darksteel and the Tinker are just clutter.
I did not have consistent results with this deck, so dropped the idea after awhile. Perhaps you will do better.

Gamemaster Gamers is Gilbert, AZ is holding a T1 Tournament for a Mox Ruby on October 16th at 2:00PM 5 Proxies allowed. The store owner prefers proxies with pictures on it. (You can go to http://magiccards.info/ to print out pictured cards, cut out slips of paper, and put them in front of a land card in a sleeve). Collector's Edition cards ARE allowed, but DO count against the 5 proxies. This is a great opportunity for those of you in Tucson, L.A., San Diego, and Las Vegas to win a mox, because the T1 players in Phoenix are not very good. It will be like shooting fish in a barrel. There will be four rounds of Swiss, followed by a cut to top 4/top 8 (depending on attendence). Cost: $15 Date: October 16, 2004 Time: 2:00 PM Number of Proxies: 5 (Proxies must have full text and picture ex: photocopy of card on slip of paper added to sleeved card) 1st Prize: Mox (based on 16+ attendence to cover cost of mox) 2nd-4th prizes will be based on attendence. Directions: 2 Blocks South of Warner Rd., West Side, off Gilbert Road, next to Gilbert Wallace movie complex (480-558-0750) Store owner is Nate. (Directions, once in Phoenix: Take I-10 to US-60 East, to Gilbert Rd., South on Gilbert Rd about 4 miles) You can also PM me for more info (KSesler) -- Keith

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Deck] Control Slaver Revisited.
|
on: August 08, 2004, 02:08:31 pm

|
Paradigm: I am more than familiar with the idea of Citadel, as Richard Shay and I talked about it at Origins.
I used the Citadels for a few weeks, including at one of the Origins tournament, but have found the Mishra's much more effective in my area. In the Columbus meta, though, the Citadels may be the better card.
As Richard points out, there are still cons to using the Mishra's. So far, though, the pros outweigh the cons for me.
For artifact counting purposes, I count the Mishra's as 1/2 of an artifact. My build, then, has 13 artifacts, plus 2 1/2 artifacts, for a total of 14. For thirst purposes, this seems to be the right amount of artifact sources.

Mixing Mike: Yes, the factories help against Fish and Control, among other decks, like FCG. Also, sometimes people will waste the factories, allowing some of my red mana sources a better chance to stick around.
In the past, I was running 18 land and 8 non-land mana. That seemed to be the bare minimum of land to run for both consistency reasons and with all the waste effects that are in many decks now.
19 lands has been working for me in an environment where lots of null rods, stifles and waste effects are used.
Strip mine can be used for mana as necessary, to finally give me a way to deal with opponent's libraries, and, occasionally, to handle man-lands.

Atog Lord:
I have PM'd you before about using Mishra's for the Citadels, and they have been working very well. I can still activate and weld them when necessary, they can do damage, they block lackeys, work when null rod is out (unlike the Citadels), etc., etc.
I also added a strip mine and took out an off-color mox. I have also been pleased with this change.
Here is my current list:
// Creatures 1 Platinum Angel 1 Pentavus 1 Darksteel Colossus 4 Goblin Welder 1 Gorilla Shaman // Counter 4 Mana Drain 4 Force of Will // Drawing 4 Thirst for Knowledge 4 Brainstorm 1 Mind's Eye 1 Ancestral Recall // Other 1 Cunning Wish 2 Mindslaver 1 Tinker 1 Time Walk 1 Fire/Ice // Black 1 Yawgmoth's Will 1 Demonic Tutor // Mana 1 Mana Crypt 1 Mox Sapphire 1 Mox Ruby 1 Mox Pearl 1 Mox Jet 1 Sol Ring 1 Black Lotus
// Land 1 Library of Alexandria 2 Mishra's Factory 2 Underground Sea 4 Flooded Strand 1 City of Brass 4 Volcanic Island 4 Island 1 Strip Mine // Sideboard SB: 1 Fire/Ice SB: 1 Red Elemental Blast SB: 1 Mogg Salvage SB: 1 Rack and Ruin SB: 1 Echoing Truth SB: 2 Blood Moon SB: 2 Gorilla Shaman SB: 1 Blue Elemental Blast SB: 1 Fact or Fiction SB: 2 FTK SB: 1 Hibernation SB: 1 Shattering Pulse
I had been running 2 Pentavus, but swapped one out for a Colossus, which has worked well so far in limited testing.

Eternal Formats / Creative / Balance's Slot in 4cc
|
on: August 01, 2004, 04:36:17 pm
|
Regarding Balance, I am sure Kerz will come around eventually. In 1995, I suggested to Brian Weismann in an e-mail to add Balance to "The Deck". He disagreed, mainly because of the insane card advantage 4 Tomes gave players of "The Deck" over the other archetypes of the time, crappy as they were. He felt that using Balance would give up some of that advantage (cards in hand, lands in play). Eventually, Brian added it to his build, and it has been a staple for 8-9 years. Personally, I could never conceive of NOT running Balance in 4cc Control, but, to each his own I guess.

Rich:
Great report. Despite Carls' comment about your taking notes slowing down the game the two of your were playing, the notes paid off in a well written report.
It was nice meeting you and discussing Control Slaver in more detail. I also met many other TMD'ers for the first time at the Con as well.
Regarding the DCI judge in question, your efforts to pursue this will have much greater effect if you have corroborating testimony.
Since I was at the same event, seated nearby, and saw/heard the whole thing, please let me know when/how/to whom you would like me to send corroborating testimony.

Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Looking for Places to Play Type 1 in Detroit

Hi: I will be in Detroit June 5th-12, and am looking for suggestions for places to play Type 1 in Detroit area, either casual play or tournaments.
I moved from Detroit 7 years ago, and so am not familar with current scene.
From looking through old posts, it looks like some possible stores are: Pandemonium, Masquerade Game, and Awesome Comics (Wixom and Wyandotte).
Could someone let me know if these are still around, other places to play, and any other suggestons.
Thanks.
Keith
