On the heels of GP Boston, with not much else going on this weekend, this should be an exciting weekend for Vintage competitors.  Unfortunately, the pile I had aside for this event is missing, so if I can't find it, I'll give out equivalent value cards or the promised cash buyback, we have TONS of very cool stuff to choose from after the take from our GP Dealer table last weekend.  I have 2 confirmed and a ton of maybes, let's get 30 players this weekend!

Pushing it up!

I'm hoping to get a head count, let me know who's coming to this event!
4  Archives / Tournament Announcement Forum / Re: Pandemonium Weekly Vintage - June - August 2009, Something New on: July 03, 2009, 03:21:24 pm
We've been seeing 4-6 vintage players hanging out on Wednesays, with 6 people showing up last night.

You should definitely try to make it down, as weekly events are good practice!

What language is the Mana Drain?

The Drain is English.  I'll get scans of the condition up, it's pretty sweet, EX+.

Right after I had corrected it, the poster above me posted, so it was already corrected.  It will be Sat, August 8th.

Also, I'm not longer allowing me to post tournaments after 3:00a.m.  I miss too much.

The 2009 Vintage Challenge Series at Pandemonium Books and Games

We're running again and after a 26 person turnout for our January event and a 23 person turnout from April, I have high hopes to have an even higher turnout for this event.  We've got plenty of space and what I think is a better guaranteed top 8 split support up for grabs at this event!  We've been away for a while due to a packed weekend event calendar.  Check our website for our 2010 events including a cash draft guaranteeing over $600 at http://www.pandemoniumbooks.com/calendar.php

Pandemonium Books and Games
4 Pleasant Street
Cambridge, MA 02139
617-547-3721

*WHEN and HOW MUCH?*
Saturday, August 8th, 2009
The entry fee will be $25.

 ***MODIFIED STORE HOURS***
The store will be open at 10:00am and the tournament registration will start at 11:00am to accommodate players that will travel from outside of the Cambridge / Boston Area.    Deck lists are due at 11:20 a.m.  and we will start promptly at 11:30 a.m.  Please make every effort to be on time, we will not wait for late comers.

*PRIZE*
The Imperial Seal is NM- with only very slight but noticeable dings on the card.  The rest of the prizes will be based on attendance.  The following is a possible prize breakdown for 32 players.

For the first time at Pandemonium, these prizes are all Guaranteed!  All prizes will scale up with attendance as usual.
1st: NM Imperial Seal or $140.00 Cash
2nd: EX Mana Drain or $75.00 Cash
3rd-4th: $75.00 Store Credit or $50.00 Cash
5th-8th: $35.00 Store Credit or $25.00 Cash

Prizes will scale up with attendance higher then 24 players.

*PREREGISTRATION*
Of the people who preregister and show up for the event, one lucky person will receive $10 off their event entry Fee!  I'll announce the winner on the day of the event.  Preregistration is free and you can e-mail chris@pandemoniumbooks.com or reply to this thread.  Please include your Full Name that you will be using at the event.  Failure to use your full name will not be counted as a preregistration.  Some players play with a nickname and I think that's cool too, but make sure your include it.

*PARKING & TRANSPORTATION*
Parking is available around the store, metered spots are $.25 per half hour, Meters close at six.  Metered spots sometimes ticket you for leaving your car for over 2 hours in a metered spot.  This has not been an issue at Vintage events, but it looks like things may have changed in Cambridge.  There are pay lots that have a day rate of $8 less then 1 block away from the store and there's the Green Street Parking garage.  If possible, I recommend taking the MBTA Red Line to Central Square and walking 1 block North towards Harvard Square and the Central Square post office (when you come out, if you see a CVS, walk up the main street with the CVS on your left.  If you see Bank of America/Citizens bank, those should be across the street on the Right.  You'll see a seven-11 that's on a corner on the right hand side, we're behind it on the side street)

*PROXIES, DECKLISTS AND RULES*
This is a 15 Proxy vintage event, no additional proxies are allowed.  Proxies must be written or drawn on a Magic: the Gathering card.  Full rules text on the card is strongly recommended.  Proxies must be marked on your deck list and must be on a Magic: the Gathering card.  No paper inserts are allowed.

Official ELD proxies are allowed for this event and do not count toward the proxy limit.

It's requested that you bring a typed or neatly handwritten deck list with you, if you do not have one please arrive early enough to write it up, deck registration sheets will be provided.  Please mark off deck totals and proxy totals as well as what cards you are using as proxies on your deck list.  ELD Proxies are allowed and do not count towards your proxy limit, but must be marked on your deck list.  All deck lists must be written or printed on standard size 8.5" x 11" paper.   Please make sure your name is written on your deck list.

***IMPORTANT***
Please make sure your penmanship is clear on your deck lists.  Avoid abbreviating cards on your deck list, and write out the full name of each card that you are playing.

Even though this is an unsanctioned tournament, there is a significant amount of prize support for this event.  To maintain integrity, we will be using Competetive Rules Enforcement and penalties.  Please do not abbreviate cards on your deck list.

This tournament will be rated in TMD's new rating system.  I personally think it's a great idea, especially in New England with many stores working together to provide a valid tournament scene.  With that said, if you have a TMD account, please include that name on your deck list a well.  This tournament will be posted as soon as possible after the event occurs, usually it takes 1-2 weeks due to other store operations that are time sensitive as well.

*ROUNDS, BREAKS AND FOOD*
32 Players and under, 5 Rounds.
Over 32 Players, 6 Rounds.
Time: 50 Minutes

The store has many snacks and drinks available at any time.  For players interested, we will do community pizza order from Dial a Pizza, they're better then any pizza shop in central square and they aren't paticularly expensive.  We will charge $3.00 for 1/4 of a cheese pizza and $4.00 for 1/4 of a pepperoni pizza.  This has worked out very well at our weekly events and now that we have an established relationship, we're going to go back to community ordering for Vintage events as well.

*WE BUY CARDS*
As we are a Magic: the Gathering dealer, we buy and sell cards all the time, and you can buy and sell with us all day!  Need cash?  Want to enter the tournament with Cardboard?  We will have an extensive buy list for all cards.  For some cards, up to 20% may be awarded as a bonus if traded or if store credit is received.

While trading is encouraged, players are not allowed to buy and sell cards to each other.

*SIDE EVENTS*
For Vintage players and our regular crowd alike, we'll be making it a full day of events!

At 1:00 or after Round 2 of the Vintage Challenge: Shards of Alara / Conflux Booster Draft, $15 entry.  Regular Store Credit prize support ($5 per entry into pool)

at 6:00 or after Swiss Rounds: Vintage Constructed, unlimited Proxy Tournament, $5 entry, 100% entry converted into store credit.

Any questions, e-mail me at chris@pandemoniumbooks.com.  If anyone feels like I missed something, definitely replay and I will update the post!

*WHEN and HOW MUCH?*
Every Wednesday at 7:00p.m.  Players usually start showing up for games around 6:30 and we can adjust the start time each week as popular demand dictates!

As this is organized to support testing for New England Vintage Tournaments, we're providing and organized time and place to play.  There is no entry fee collected or store credit prizes, however we will still coordinate a tournament bracket as players wish.  If an event like this grows to the right size after enough time has passed, these events can be counted towards TMD's ranking system as well.

*PARKING*
Parking is available around the store, metered spots are $.25 per half hour, Meters close at six.  There are pay lots that have a day rate as well.  If all else fails, there is a parking garage on Green Street a few blocks away, a bit more expensive but they will have a space for you.

*PROXIES, DECKLISTS AND RULES*
This is an unlimited Proxy vintage event.  There are no deck lists collected.

This is a very casual event, and players have been showing up occasionally however a tournament hasn't fired since early May.  I'm restructuring the event and re-advertising to get more players interested to grow beyond the steady 4 players that show up continuously.  If you're interested in joining up, fire off a post and let the community know!

No one took the cash buyout, but everyone who won is local and attend the regular events at the store, so I'm sure they'll spend it.

The event went smoothly, we started late due to people having trouble finding the store and getting through Harvard Square where a Bomb Threat shut down a portion of Cambridge / Mass Ave making it difficult to travel from the direct north of the store.  The vintage player base seems to be growing and shifting, and I'm glad to see a healthy mix of people playing the format.  The day went well with multiple side drafts and some of my local players showed up later in the day for drafting.  I'll be adding deck lists this evening, I already bribed someone to type them up for me.

Thanks everyone for another successful event!

23 players, gave away the ancestral recall, $70 to 2nd, $35 to 3rd & 4th, and $15 to 5th - 8th.  as soon as I can get the decklists typed up, we'll have the standings and top 8 decklists posted.  it might be a week or 2 depending on how busy the store is over the coming weeks.

I'm down to only a Mox Pearl for power, so unless I get something snazzier, we'll have a less top heavy event prize support in the next event.  Sadly, it won't be until august before I can run another vintage event as things have gotten pretty crowded for our store's event calendar.

Paul Ewenstein
Blaine Christiansen
Demonic Attourney*
Pat Timmons
Eli Hamblet
Kevin Goscinak
John Longo
Jason Kenney
Reid Duke

* - Awaiting conformation.  ELD is trying to make it, DA is First Post, I'm assuming he's coming.

If I missed your name, please let me know either through e-mail (chris@pandemoniumbooks.com), PM, Replying, or calling the store (617-547-3721).  If I misspelled your name or Nick Name you want to use for the tournament, please print it clearly or type it on your deck list.  Deck Lists are used for your registration name and I'm awful at spelling anyway.

We had 16 prereg'd last time and we got 26 players, so I'm really hopeful about the attendance for this event growing to 32 people.  Keep it coming in! Remember, if you do not preregister by the end of tomorrow, you won't have a chance to possibly win $10 off your tournament entry.  All you have to do is tell me you are coming and then show up.

With under 2 weeks away and 0 preregistrations, I added the previous incentive to preregistration!  I'd really like to get an idea of how many people are interested in coming to this vintage event!  Thanks all!

It was 8:00 when we started advertising, but we've since changed it to 7:00.  I've updated the front page to reflect the correct starting time.

Thanks for linking to the website!  I should have thought of that.

Oooh, they're advertising Epic on the drain now..I love that game!

Gotta hand it to Rob for getting a card game up and off the ground in this competitive, crappy market.

Despite the awful weather this past weekend, we're still going to be open and hosting our regular Tuesday events, including Vintage Constructed.  I've just updated our website (I might've forgotten to put it up there at all) that we hold these events weekly, so if you haven't been by in the past but have the chance, it's a good evening of fun times had by all!

I just changed the date, if there's any reason I shouldn't keep the change, you guys should let me know!

We got 6 people, and 2 new players from our local group that are first time vintage players!  Keep up the weekly attendance, and these events will continue to grow.

Thanks to all who have been helping to keep these going.

I've updated the drain calendar for the month of March.

These events are also great practice for the larger New England tournaments, and there's several in the next few weeks through the months of March and April!

The 2009 Vintage Challenge Series at Pandemonium Books and Games

We're running again and after a 26 person turnout for our January event, I have high hopes to have an even higher turnout for this event.  We've got plenty of space and an Ancestral Recall up for grabs at this event!

Pandemonium Books and Games
4 Pleasant Street
Cambridge, MA 02139
617-547-3721

*WHEN and HOW MUCH?*
Saturday, April 4th, 2009
The entry fee will be $25.

***MODIFIED DATE***
This event was scheduled to occur on Saturday, March 28th, however due to a select few players asking for a different day, ELD's Birthday, and me wanting to go the Rob's Epic TCG $5,000k tournament on the 28th, I'm using my special powers to move this event forward a week.  There doesn't seem to be any local PTQ's, vintage, legacy, or other special events myself, the store calendar, or other vintage players would get to, so hopefully this date sticks.

 ***MODIFIED STORE HOURS***
The store will be open at 10:00am and the tournament will start at 11:00am to accommodate players that will travel from outside of the Cambridge / Boston Area.    If people are running late, we will be able to hold the start of the tournament to ABSOLUTELY NO LATER THEN 11:30am.  Please make every effort to be on time.

*PRIZE*
The Ancestral Recall is in EX-, the face of the card looks good, there is no obvious scratches or folds on the card.  There is significant wear on the edges of the card, more noticeable on the back of the card then the front.  The rest of the prizes will be based on attendance.  The following is a possible prize breakdown for 32 players.

1st: Ancestral Recall (Guaranteed)
2nd: $150 Store Credit
3rd-4th: $75 Store Credit
5th-8th: $25 Store Credit

To clarify the prize structure, no additional prizes other then the Recall will be given away if there are 14 or less players.  The buyback on the recall will also not be honored in the highly unlikely event that there are less then 14 players as well.

*CASH CONVERSION*  For this event, Store Credit can be converted into cash at a rate of $3.50 per $5.00 of store credit.  Don't find what you want in our growing collection of Magic Singles?  Not a Science Fiction fan?  Didn't find the best board game ever?  Oh well, here's some money!  This was extremely successful for our last event, and I believe that since many vintage players have most of what they need and getting special cards that aren't common is always hit or miss, I believe the cash conversion system is critical to a larger turnout for these events.

The buyback on the Ancestral Recall Buyback is $300 Store Credit or $270 cash.

*PREREGISTRATION*
Of the people who preregister and show up for the event, one lucky person will receive $10 off their event entry Fee!  I'll announce the winner on the day of the event.  Preregistration is free and you can e-mail chris@pandemoniumbooks.com, call the store at 617-547-3721, or reply to this forum with your name to preregister.  If you preregister, please make every attempt to make it to the event.  If you preregister and cannot make it, please contact myself or the store so that you can be removed from the list.  We will try to start with as many players as possible for the event.  It's important to preregister as it gives us a clearer idea of how many people to expect for the tournament.  It is important to reply with your name.  Simply saying "Prereg" is not sufficient because I may not know who you are.

*PARKING & TRANSPORTATION*
Parking is available around the store, metered spots are $.25 per half hour, Meters close at six.  Metered spots ticket for leaving your car for over 2 hours in a metered spot.  This has not been an issue at Vintage events, but it looks like things have changed in Cambridge.

For players traveling from out of town, we'll do a community order for food from any of the local establishments as demanded.  We will not do community pizza, most people who attend events at the store grab food on their own from the food establishments.

At 3:00 or After Round 4: Cube Draft!

at 6:00 or after Swiss Rounds: Vintage Constructed, unlimited Proxy Tournament, $5 entry, 100% entry converted into store credit.

Any questions definitely call the store.  If anyone feels like I missed something, definitely replay and I will update the post!

Realm Razor - As of the last time I looked, I had 6 of them for sale at $1 each.

We are on for tomorrow!  The judge is sick to near dead and there will be some snow flurries in the area, but otherwise good driving weather!

Thanks to everyone for your support, this looks to be one of the larger Vintage events we've held so far!

As it is the end of January 20th, as promised, this player will receive an extra $10 which he can use towards registration or take as extra cash:

Craig Walendziak

Preregistration is still open, and helps for organizing the event.  As of this writing, we have 16 Magic players coming into the store for this event.

Thanks everyone for your support!

I do not have KMC perfect fits, I'm sorry.  I hope you will still come.

Like, if someone shows up with a double sleeved deck that is unmarked and doesnt specifically come up and ask you before the tournament, are you going to DQ them if you find it out later on?

Nope.

If the sleeves aren't flat, then you can make out the next cards.  Also, I've seen people use different sleeves for the insides of the cards.  There is potential abuse in both of those situations and those are the only 2 times I've ever seen it and it's been a year or so since any one has brought a double sleeved deck to the store.  I'm trying to think why I would have said it was banned by the DCI, but it took me 3 seconds to find players doing in on the Grand Prix.  On top of that, when Dan from Myriad PM'd me asking me to site that it was banned, I didn't think I would ever have said that.  So that's me failing.

However, for Mox Tournamnets, I think it's a fine rule, unless someone brings a double sleeved deck that shows no signs of marks, then I'll be fine with it.

If you can show me a deck of double sleeved cards that don't look marked in any way, shape or form, then I'll consider making an exception to allow it.  I've only ever seen 2 decks brought into the store that were double sleeved.  Both times the decks were marked due to the sleeves not fitting evenly and there was room for potential abuse.  It is technically legal under DCI guidelines.

I run these tournaments as sanctioned Magic Rules for REL Competitive allow.  If sleeves are reasonably damaged or appear marked, players are required to re-sleeve with new sleeves.  While the rules for how many of each foil isn't clear, the penalty guideline is crystal clear when situations are not acceptable and how to fix them.  I will not implement any rule that restricts or encourages playing more or less foil cards.

None of these rules are new to my tournament.  I appreciate your concern, and I want to be as fair as possible as a tournament organizer to all of the community.  If you have questions, please ask them and I will answer them.

That's more for the Mox Tournaments then for casual, and I did a copy paste for this initial event posting.  The first time I ran a Mox tournament in the store, several people had double sleeves and it's an easy way to mark cards, and it's something strictly banned from the dci (OK I did say that.  I lied, it's actually allowed).  For a casual proxy constructed event like this, I can definitely allow paper proxies, marker proxies and what not.  This is about having fun, not being a rules heavy competitive event.

Later seems to be better for everyone so I've changed it to 8:00 p.m.  We got six people with is an incredibly strong start.  I have a good faith that events like these will increase attendance for bigger events and also provide a more low key environment to allow new players to break into vintage.
