The 2009 Vintage Challenge Series at Pandemonium Books and Games

Sorry about the long delay since the last tournament, we've been fighting the Magic Calendar, other events, and the stores now pretty packed event calendar as well.  We will continue to host vintage events, and I might (the trade isn't final yet) have an Ancestral Recall for the next Vintage event here at Pandemonium Books & Games!

Pandemonium Books and Games
4 Pleasant Street
Cambridge, MA 02139
617-547-3721

*WHEN and HOW MUCH?*
Saturday, January 24th, 2009
The entry fee will be $25.

 ***MODIFIED STORE HOURS***
The store will be open at 10:00am and the tournament will start at 11:00am to accommodate players that will travel from outside of the Cambridge / Boston Area.    If people are running late, we will be able to hold the start of the tournament to ABSOLUTELY NO LATER THEN 11:30am.  Please make every effort to be on time.

*PRIZE*
The MOX PEARL in NM-, the face of the card looks very nice, there is slight damage on the edges of the cards.  The back of the card is also very nice looking, and there is no bends or folds on the card.  The rest of the prizes will be based on attendance.  The following is a possible prize breakdown for 32 players.

1st: Mox Pearl (Guaranteed)
2nd: $150 Store Credit
3rd-4th: $75 Store Credit
5th-8th: $25 Store Credit

To clarify the prize structure, no additional prizes other then the Mox will be given away if there are 14 or less players.

*CASH CONVERSION*  For this event, Store Credit can be converted into cash at a rate of $3.50 per $5.00 of store credit.  Don't find what you want in our growing collection of Magic Singles?  Not a Science Fiction fan?  Didn't find the best board game ever?  Oh well, here's some money!  This is a new tryout and I think it makes sense for this type of event as we have a lot of players that travel from other locations to be here for this type of event.

The buyback on the Mox Pearl is $265 cash.

*PREREGISTRATION*
Players are encouraged to preregister for this event but are not required to attend so that we may have an idea on the number of players coming.  We'll do a raffle for $10 cash between preregistered players.  The Raffle will be drawn on Tuesday, January 20th and I'll post the winner here.  Prepayment helps us out and is encouraged, but not required.  I'll take any registration through this thread or you can e-mail chris@pandemoniumbooks.com, or you can call the store at 617-547-3721.

*Inclement Weather Warning*
Being that we are in New England and Snow could happen, I want to set a precedent for what to expect in case of a Snow Emergency.  We will make every effort to hold the tournament despite the worst weather.  In case of a Snow Emergency, parking becomes extremely difficult.  I encourage people to Car Pool, take the MBTA, or possibly arrange to stay closer to the store.

If we're expecting a very heavy snowfall and travel is unsafe to the point where we have to cancel the event, I will do so within 12 hours of the event.  If you have questions, the best way to get in touch with us is by Phone.  Calling the day before the event is encouraged especially if you are planning on traveling from outside the Boston Area.

*PARKING*
Parking is available around the store, metered spots are $.25 per half hour, Meters close at six.  There are pay lots that have a day rate as well.  If all else fails, there is a parking garage on Green Street a few blocks away, a bit more expensive but they will have a space for you.

*PROXIES, DECKLISTS AND RULES*
This is a 15 Proxy vintage event, no additional proxies are allowed.  Proxies must be written or drawn on a Magic: the Gathering card.  Full rules text on the card is strongly recommended..  No paper inserts or double sleeving is allowed for this event.

*UPDATE*
ELD Proxies will still be allowed as usual for this event, as that appears to be what players want.  They will not count towards the proxy limit.

It's requested that you bring a typed or neatly handwritten deck list with you, if you do not have one please arrive early enough to write it up, deck registration sheets will be provided.  Please mark off deck totals and proxy totals as well as what cards you are using as proxies on your deck list.  ELD Proxies are allowed and do not count towards your proxy limit, but must be marked on your deck list.  All deck lists must be written or printed on standard size 8.5" x 11" paper.

Even though this is an unsanctioned tournament, there is a lot on the line.  To maintain integrity, we will be using Competetive Rules Enforcement and penalties.  Please do not abbreviate cards on your deck list.

*NEW UPDATE*
This tournament has been posted since the new year and we will be running this tournament rated in TMD's new rating system.  I personally think it's a great idea, especially in New England with many stores working together to provide a valid tournament scene.  With that said, if you have a TMD account, please include that name on your deck list a well.

*ROUNDS, BREAKS AND FOOD*
32 Players and under, 5 Rounds.
Over 32 Players, 6 Rounds.
Time: 50 Minutes

The store has many snacks and drinks available at any time.  We will break for lunch after round 1, Cheese and Pepperoni Pizza will be available at $2.00 per slice, delivered from Hi-Fi Pizza. This will be a 30 minute break after all match slips are collected after round 1 (or later if the majority of players want to wait until after round 2).  If there are 6 rounds, there will be a 15 minute break after round 4 for the benefit of everyone's health.   Top 8 matches are single elimination, un-timed.

*WE BUY CARDS*
As we are a Magic: the Gathienr dealer, we buy and sell cards all the time, and you can buy and sell with us all day!  Need cash?  Want to enter the tournament with Cardboard?  We will have an extensive buylist for all cards.  For some cards, up to 20% may be awarded as a bonus if traded or if store credit is received.

While trading is encouraged, players are not allowed to buy and sell cards to each other.

*SIDE EVENTS*
We'll be hosting Booster Drafts and Cube Drafts as they fill up all day long!

Any questions definitely call the store.  If anyone feels like I missed something, definitely replay and I will update the post!

Its fair to assume that the buyback on the pearl is in "store credit" numbers, right?

The buyback that is posted is a cash figure, the store credit amount is larger as it's eating a bigger chunk of the prize pool.

Keep in mind that I'm not a very active member of the tournament forums and I don't actually know who's who.  Please do me a huge favor and put your name in with your preregistration!  Thanks so much guys, I appreciate it in advance.  I'm glad that people will be attending!

Thanks!

Christopher,

I have a few questions.

First, is this tournament going to happen?

Second, is the prize that you listed above a guaranteed prize?

Thanks.

Ugh, its that dreaded guaranteed word.

Don't gurantee your prizes, and you lose your ass when no one shows up...

Whats the proper solution?

"Prizes will be based off attendance with 90% of entry going to the top 8"

some people aren't huge fans of this, and I can uinderstand why, but the precedent has been set for this to work in a successful way.

I am interested to see if Elves! has an affect on vintage in pulling in more players who may try the format now that an incredibly cheap and efficient deck is available.

My main concern, Travis, is whether this tournament is going to happen. It was canceled at the last minute last time.

Thats why I said, there needs to be a different way to do tournaments so everyone ends up happy.

If I traveled to boston and had to find a parking spot, to find out when i finally got to the store the tournament was cancelled because no one showed up, I would set the place on fire.

I always will give away the mox.  Additional prizes are based on attendance, and there's already a good number of players coming to the event so I'm not so worried about that at all.  I'm here to provide players a place to play and be a Tournament Organizer.  The event never makes a whole lot for us, its buying, selling and trading that keeps us going.  Thanks everyone who comes to the store and supports us by trading with us!

I had canceled the last tournament early in November and I didn't realized there was an orphaned link in the Calendar that was brought to my attention by ELD week of the event.  Should I cancel any event in the future, ELD has advised me on ways to keep it clear, including just leaving the post up with new dates and stating it's canceled rather then pull the post down.  I apologize to the vintage community for that happening, and I hope that I can be forgiven somewhat for that mess.  I take responsibility here as there was more the store could have done on the communication front.

As far as a different way to do tournaments, I don't see a problem with converting prizes to top 8.  All of my events are purposed to let more people know about the store and to keep gaming and geek communities functioning and working.  I hope there's a similar attitude among tournament organizers, giving back what you take in looks good to players in my opinion, I'm curious to hear more on what players want out of vintage tournaments like this one so that we can improve.

I realize events like these are important to the vintage calendar, and I feedback from players is important.  If you've attended any of my or other New England Vintage Organizers and you have suggestions to help these events run smoother and create a more enjoyable atmosphere for players, I'm all ears.  Communication is key, and this particular date looks to be pretty popular.  Preregistration is an important tool, and so far a good number of players have contacted me for registration.  I appreciate that, and hope that everyone has a great time at the event.

With 2 weeks to go, we have a healthy number of players that have preregistered for this event!  More than any other Vintage event that we've run!  We're also going to start hosting weekly vintage events starting next Tuesday as well, those will be in the evening at the store, $5 entry.  These events will be unlimited proxy.  So this looks to be a pretty exciting season for vintage and Magic in general here at the store!

What time will the Tuesday events start?  I generally can't make it to the store on a Tuesday until 8:00.

Also, please prereg me for the 24!

Weekly Vintage is going to start at 6:30, but even if your showing up later you probably can still get games in.

Wait a minute, how is it that we cannnot double sleeve our cards?  If all 75 cards look exactly the same then this makes no sense.  Double sleeving with kmc perfect fits helps protect the cards, especially foils from getting face scuffing, and as far as stacking the deck, these inside sleeves do nothing.  I just don't see why players should have to unsleeve their decks 2 times, then resleeve their deck, risk card damage, and then after the tourney is over, unsleeve and then resleeve twice.  Seems pretty ridiculous.  If your going to make that rule then you might want to make a rule that a deck must be all non-foils or all foils, or how about adding a rule that players must use brand new sleeves for the tournament.

If you can show me a deck of double sleeved cards that don't look marked in any way, shape or form, then I'll consider making an exception to allow it.  I've only ever seen 2 decks brought into the store that were double sleeved.  Both times the decks were marked due to the sleeves not fitting evenly and there was room for potential abuse.  It is technically legal under DCI guidelines.

I run these tournaments as sanctioned Magic Rules for REL Competitive allow.  If sleeves are reasonably damaged or appear marked, players are required to re-sleeve with new sleeves.  While the rules for how many of each foil isn't clear, the penalty guideline is crystal clear when situations are not acceptable and how to fix them.  I will not implement any rule that restricts or encourages playing more or less foil cards.

None of these rules are new to my tournament.  I appreciate your concern, and I want to be as fair as possible as a tournament organizer to all of the community.  If you have questions, please ask them and I will answer them.

As it is the end of January 20th, as promised, this player will receive an extra $10 which he can use towards registration or take as extra cash:

Craig Walendziak

Preregistration is still open, and helps for organizing the event.  As of this writing, we have 16 Magic players coming into the store for this event.

Thanks everyone for your support!

I'll be there.  Also, FYI to those driving in, there's pay parking up and down Green St. including an open lot just past Pleasant on Green and a structured lot at 244 Green.  Also, there's a lot that's free on the weekends across from my place at 184 Green.  2c

Realm Razor - As of the last time I looked, I had 6 of them for sale at $1 each.

We are on for tomorrow!  The judge is sick to near dead and there will be some snow flurries in the area, but otherwise good driving weather!

Thanks to everyone for your support, this looks to be one of the larger Vintage events we've held so far!

I've finally had a chance to put together the top 8 deck lists and full standings and they are posted in the results forum here:

http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=37375.0

Thanks to all who attended to make this the biggest vintage tournament we've held so far!

We're looking forward to hosting our next tournament, and the store has finalized the trade for an Ancestral Recall!  We'll be reviewing the New England and store's calendar to get that posted as soon as possible!

Until Next Time,
