Pandemonium Books and Games
4 Pleasant Street
Cambridge, MA 02139
617-547-3721

*WHEN and HOW MUCH?*
Every Wednesday at 7:00p.m.  Players usually start showing up for games around 6:30 and we can adjust the start time each week as popular demand dictates!

The entry fee will be $5 if players wish to play for a store credit prize pool.  Open testing is encouraged.

*PRIZE*
Store credit conversion based on number of players, 100% of entry fees are converted into store credit prizes.

*Inclement Weather Warning*
Being that we are in New England and Snow could happen, I want to set a precedent for what to expect in case of a Snow Emergency.  We just don't close.

*PARKING*
Parking is available around the store, metered spots are $.25 per half hour, Meters close at six.  There are pay lots that have a day rate as well.  If all else fails, there is a parking garage on Green Street a few blocks away, a bit more expensive but they will have a space for you.

*PROXIES, DECKLISTS AND RULES*
This is an unlimited Proxy vintage event.

*WE BUY CARDS*
As we are a Magic: the Gathering dealer, we buy and sell cards all the time, and you can buy and sell with us all day.

So out of curiousity, why do you not allow double sleeving?

Were trying to get a weekly cheaper event going in Boston for all those interested.  These tournaments are going to be designed for both existing players to cheaply play and, more importantly, to try and get some more local interest in vintage.  Some of us are going to bring proxie decks that other people can play.

As far as the no paper in sleeves deal well have to talk to the TO about this because paper proxies are going to be nessary.

Anyone interested, please feel free to come by.  The posted start time is 6:30, but I'm sure this will be flexible.

That's more for the Mox Tournaments then for casual, and I did a copy paste for this initial event posting.  The first time I ran a Mox tournament in the store, several people had double sleeves and it's an easy way to mark cards, and it's something strictly banned from the dci (OK I did say that.  I lied, it's actually allowed).  For a casual proxy constructed event like this, I can definitely allow paper proxies, marker proxies and what not.  This is about having fun, not being a rules heavy competitive event.

Later seems to be better for everyone so I've changed it to 8:00 p.m.  We got six people with is an incredibly strong start.  I have a good faith that events like these will increase attendance for bigger events and also provide a more low key environment to allow new players to break into vintage.

6 players this week.  After 4 rounds of round-robin play, three players were 3-1 and split the prize pool:

Blaine Christiansen (me) - Uba Stax
Bill Copes (AbdullahTheButcher) - Red Stax
Arik Pogrebinsky (arik124) - BUG Fish

It was a fun and competitive tournament.  I hope this catches on and we can start getting >10 people each week.

I've been double-sleeving for at least 4-5 years without a problem, including major DCI-sanctioned tournaments.  I don't believe it's banned by the DCI, but I could be wrong.  What issues were you having with it?

If the sleeves aren't flat, then you can make out the next cards.  Also, I've seen people use different sleeves for the insides of the cards.  There is potential abuse in both of those situations and those are the only 2 times I've ever seen it and it's been a year or so since any one has brought a double sleeved deck to the store.  I'm trying to think why I would have said it was banned by the DCI, but it took me 3 seconds to find players doing in on the Grand Prix.  On top of that, when Dan from Myriad PM'd me asking me to site that it was banned, I didn't think I would ever have said that.  So that's me failing.

However, for Mox Tournamnets, I think it's a fine rule, unless someone brings a double sleeved deck that shows no signs of marks, then I'll be fine with it.

Why not just say 'it's OK but if you bring a marked deck you are SOL.'  Rather than just assuming double sleeving is the same as marking (I've seen plenty of double sleeved decks and I honestly can't tell the difference except that it looks like there are more cards from the extra plastic), just treat it like any other sleeves, in that if it's marked, its illegal.  Like, if someone shows up with a double sleeved deck that is unmarked and doesnt specifically come up and ask you before the tournament, are you going to DQ them if you find it out later on?

Thanks for clearing that up, Chris. Glad to hear that marked decks are being discouraged, but legitimate use of proper double sleeving is being allowed. It's always nice to be able to keep those expensive cards in nice shape through multi-layer protection.

7 players this week.  We did round-robin again, and top 2 split:

Steve Houdlette - Painter, 5-1
Arik Pogrebinsky - BUGw Fish, 4-2

It's starting to feel like this might catch on.  If anybody is in the area and is free on Tuesdays at 8:00, come by and check it out.

This is truly excellent.  I have absolutely no doubt that small weekly events are not only the best way to reach your potential, but also key to keeping interest growing.  I do Jiu Jitsu every Tuesday, but on the odd day that all my training partners cancel, I'll definitely make the trip out.  I'd recommend linking these events to the calendar, like I do for Monday Night Vintage in Bridgewater.  There are certainly not many better things to do on a Tuesday night than hang out with friends playing for some prizes.

Looking forward to this weekend's Mox Tournament.

We're hoping to get 8-10 people this week.  If we do, we'll probably play Swiss or double elimination rather than round-robin.  That should shorten the tournament a little as well.

We had 6 players this week, including 4 new players.  Several of the regulars were sick and missing, so once they get back in action we should starting getting ~10 people per week.  We played a "free form" double elimination tournament.  I left during the 2/3 match, so here are the final standings to the best of my knowledge:

1. Clark Van Vliet - Ad Nauseam Tendrils
2/3. Nathan Brothers - Manaless Ichorid
2/3. Paul Ewenstein - Tezzeret Control
4. Dan Cunningham - Elves
5. John Longo - Longo GAT
6. Blaine Christiansen - Goblin Food Chain

Good to see some new faces came out.  After missing last week, and getting bumped by Arik at the mox event, I'll be looking for fresh meat.

We had 10 players this week, including a couple new players.  For a minute there it looked like we were going to get 12, but I think the weather might have lost us a couple people.  We did 3 rounds of double elimination, and the top 2 split the prize pool:

Paul Ewenstein - Tezzeret
Jeff Greene - Remora Deck

We are still trying to figure out an appropriate format.  We usually start at 7:30-8, so we only have time for about 3, maybe 4 rounds before the store closes.  So far, though, the response from the players has been overwhelmingly positive.

Glad to see you guys doing so well.  Why aren't the rounds swiss?  If you do start getting 17+ people, 5 rounds of swiss will allow your events to count towards the Vintage Ranking System.

We settled on an 8:00 start time to compensate my stupid ass (my boxing class doesn't end until 7:30, then I have to fight 20 min of city traffic to get to Cambridge, THEN find parking).  Being that I haven't been able to attend half of these events so far, if you guys wanted to push back the start to an earlier time, I certainly would not be offended.

Start time?
