That art is pretty hot.

But I do not like the fact that it's actually a Magic card face.  I'd be much happier if the painting were just the picture rather than a full card.  Do you know if this is the case or not?

Putting it on a card is just dumb.

Also, worst flavor text ever.

Could off course hint to the fact they are actually thinking about reprinting the power nine if they continue on printing power cards like this. Takes another 6 years for them actually having all of them i reckon.

But probably not.

I like the art. They could have been more original with the flavour text though.

I don't know.  I liked the Lotus a lot better than this.  It's better than the original art yes, but it doesn't blow me away.

The new artwork looks really sharp, but I'm not sure that I like the cardface added into the mix.  Either way, Wizards did a really nice job.  Now if only we could get them to somehow throw in a few Beta starter decks into the prize structure...

The picture is fine.

Putting that picture on the new cardface is like plating a flower on the rotting corpse of an infant -- the beauty now only serves to highlight the hideous display around it. I hate the new card faces, and I'm making no exception for this. Just plain ugly. I'm sure that whoever wins it could sell it for a few bucks -- and thereby save himself from having to look at this hideous juxtaposition.

150 Italian Legends boosters is poor? What is a rich payout, then? That's better than Foil Gemstone Mines for the T8 for sure. Of course, that depends on all boosters being Legends. If they are not, then the picture is the only price playing for. And say what you want, I think it's hot, even with the new cardface. I don't hate the new face nearly as much as many others; already (well, it's two years now...) I am so used to it that I sometimes fail to see the difference when I see an old and a new card side by side.

I love how the painting has the old pyramids in the background of the picture. It's like saying "here's your heritage, we haven't forgotten", a nice implication for a card called Ancestral Recall.

Smile Perhaps it's more modern than the original art?  My alpha ancestral's beautiful, but the old art would look bad on a new card face.  This one fits the updated version of a card better.

I'm fond of the art, but I concur with most here that adding the cardface was 100% unnecessary and detracts from the artwork in a way that brings a large frown to my face.

WOW and WOW! I love the way the guys have been taking the original artwork to remake them on an even more spectacular way than before. It's soooo beautiful.

Although I agree that the card frame should have been left out... Unless they were actually planning on printing the card, but that would be so wrong considering just how much it would cost after...

If I win that painting, I PROMISE to do the right thing and cut the picture out of the stupid card frame and then reframe the art.

I can't tell from the link; but is there a possibility that the painting and the cardface are seperate and that possibly they have matted the cardface around or over top of the actual Mark Poole artwork?  That would be pretty cool if it was the case.

Just to help you guys out:

Dimensions of a magic card (roughly): 6 by 8,5 cm's
Dimensions of a magic cards art (roughly): 4 by 5 cm's
Dimensions of the original art painting thingy: 12 by 15 inches

Conclusion: They just made a mockup using the art by mister Poole to show the new art on the site, but the winner will get a painting like the previous two years..

I'll agree with everyone here, new card face looks terrible.  It would have been better older card face and perhaps foil! MUA HAHA!! Or just old card face would be suffice.

Per some updated information about the painting here, the 9th edition layout is just a frame that they added to the original art, so you should be able to seperate them. I'm glad, because the frame is hideous.

Quote
Scott Larabee took this year's prize one step beyond merely crafting a new piece of art.

“I took the original painting and had our graphic designer Matt Stevens – in proportion – mock up a new card frame so it would look like a current card that is about 15 inches by 12 inches. The flavor text says ‘2005 Vintage Champion', the collector number is 1 of 9, and the expansion symbol is the Vintage Championships logo. It's pretty cool.

You just concluded something by reasoning that it was three times the size of the art box on a card, and totally disregarded the difference between an inch and a centimeter? I mean, when has dividing by 2.54 ever changed a number anyway? Even if you're right about the art being separate from the frame, wtf?

I was just comparing how the width and height of the total card, the cards art and the new art related to each other. That can be done disregarding any useless constants, like inches, centimeters or buffalohair-thickness. To clarify (same info, but now all put into the same frame of reference):

A magic cards height is 1.4 times its width (8.5 / 6)
The art of a magic card has a height that is 1.25 times its width (5 : 4)
The height of the new artwork is 1.25 times its width (15 : 12)

Conclusion (as before): The stated size is for the original artwork, excluding any weird additions for frames and such.

That's right, the prize for this year's Gen Con Vintage Championship will be a piece of original art that re-imagines the best card-drawing spell ever printed, Ancestral Recall. Past prizes have included a newly painted Chris Rush Black Lotus and a fresh Mark Tedin take on Time Walk.

Something wrong here...
