but I have to say I feel sorry for Brassy. He just can't seem to get away from his bad luck. I doubt finishing 2nd in the Vintage Champs should be considered bad luck.

I actually played a completely different dragon list than I was expecting. I'm probably gonna write a report and submit it to scg because I ROCKED the swiss. I didn't lose a single game through 5 rounds, and I'm really proud of that. I think I played the first 5 rounds about as well as I've ever played in a tournament and I also got randomly lucky so things worked out. my dragon list was 5 color despite the fact that I expected a ton of stax because the sideboard options you get from white are just too good and dragon's gonna have issues with land destruction no matter what you play so rich shay convinced me to just go all in. I remembered that Dicemanxx did pretty well with a 5 color list at waterbury a few months ago and decided to go for it. went out to the vendor room and spent 23.50 or so retooling my mana base. and got the following:
my list...and remember that it's like 2:30 am here and I was out celebrating for a while and played for like 12 hours...was something like.
LEEROY JENKINSÂ (also known as 5 color Dragon)
4 forbidden orchard 4 gemstone mine 3 city of brass 2 gilmmer void 8 solomoxencrypt
3 intuition 3 lim-dul's vault 1 vamp 1 DT
2 compulsion 4 bazaar
4 dragon 4 squee 3 xantid 1 sliver queen 1 Shivan Hellkite
4 force 1 ancestral 1 echoing truth
3 necromancy 3 animate dead
Board: 2 sacred ground (stax) 2 rack and ruin 2 Swords 2 Ray of revelation 3 Null rod 2 Deed 2 Verdant Force
anyway, I'll be happy to discuss things some other time but the other guys I'm staying with are basically sitting up waiting for me to finish this.
thanks to all the people who rooted for dragon to make the top 8 as I think I was the only one in the field that actually had win conditions.
EDIT: fixed win conditions...yeah, 3:30 am after playing for 12 hours...these things happen.

Congrats on doing so well! I'm glad to see Dragon do well again. 1 crimson Hellkite Not to be nitpicky... But did you ever consider something like Flamewave Invoker instead of Crimson Hellkite? Some while ago when I was interested in getting 5c Dragon off the ground, I decided Flamewave Invoker is much better than Crimson Hellkite if you are going to play City of Brass. The thinking is that if you are going to be bothering with City of Brass, there are probably going to be situations where you want to go off, but your only source of red is a City, and thus can't go for the immediately kill (unless you have greater than or equal life as your opponent). As long as you have another source of any colored mana, you could still go off in that situation with Flamewave Invoker (assuming you have 4 or more life). Of course, you lose the ability to just animate the Crimson Hellkite and go for the attack win. At the same time, however, you are much more likely to be able to actually afford the mana cost of Flamewave Invoker should you need to play a chump blocker or something. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever heard of anyone else ever suggesting Flamewave Invoker in 5c Dragon. Your thoughts? Katzby

Sorry if this is obvious, but don't you mean Shivan Hellkite? Why did you choose it over Kumano, Master Yamabushi? Is the flying or the extra +1 power more beneficial if you're trying to win by attacking?

Congrats Hale on an excellent performance with 5C-WGD. If I was able to make it this year, I'd be playing the exact same deck because I feel like it is an amazing choice in the meta right now. Great call, and you were clearly rewarded for it. Who did you lose to in the semis? You should have a good game 1 against either SSB or Stax so long as the SSB was not packing main deck Furnaces. I'm looking forward to the report!

1 crimson Hellkite But did you ever consider something like Flamewave Invoker instead of Crimson Hellkite? Running Flamewave Invoker over the Hellkite means you still scoop to Platinum Angel in Game 1 unless you can manage to animate a Welder.

Not only did the Vintage Avant-Garde put two of its three members in the top eight, we also found the missing set of power iamfishman lost (the Prize for the next Waterbury) and returned it to him. We were so busy this weekend!

I played hellkite over kumano because it's a better reanimate target. when I activate bazaar creatures are definately high on the list of things I'm looking to pitch as I feel like I can always get them back with an animate if I want them, kumano is a worse animate target but has the advantage of removing welders from the game and being hard castable. I figure that if it's in my hand it's not getting hard cast except in the really really late game and with a 5 color manabase you can actually get that 3rd red if you need it without too much troubble so you can just pay 3RRR and get a 7/7 flying trample.
about flamewave invoker, I'm not even sure which card that is. is that the one from onslaught that you can pay 8 to smack your opponent in the face for 5? this seems worse to me for two reasons. first you have the problem with plats, secondly you can't kill a goblin welder with it if for some reason you really need to.

yep, that's him. I had a question: Why did you run Crimson Hellkite over Shivan Hellkite though? The Shivan kills welders and seals the deal and wins the game. Maybe I am missing the reason, but you can always hard cast Worldgorger if you need to beat for a win, also Shivan Hellkite is easier to hardcast anyway. Great list BTW.

But now the 7/7 flying, trample part doesn't make sense as an argument of Shivan Hellkite over Kumano, Master Yamabushi, but being able to animate a 4/5 or a 5/5 flyer is better than being able to animate a 3/4 or 4/4 earthbound.

Worldgorger is the 7/7 flying trample creature he is referring to. Sad as it may seem, too many people miss the easy win by just hardcasting thier huge beater and swinging in for the win.
As for Hellkite over Kumano, flying is more important than one more point of power, especially because Hale's got orchards in his mana base.
I like the 5C mana base and hardcast beats, especially when staring at a seal of cleansing or chalices across the table.
