...and not resell it?

I got a Wii on Sunday and so far I've been very pleased with it. The Wii-mote and Nunchuk controller I was initially very skeptical about, but after playing Wii Sports, Trauma Center and Zelda with it; well I'm sold. At first if you overdo the motions while getting used to the controller it's a bit of a strain on your upper arm muscle, but after a little practice it doesn't produce any noticeable wear and tear. I played Zelda for about 2  hours straight and my arms didn't bother me (and your pretty much holding up both controllers the whole time) much at all.

The graphics are pretty much like everyone says they are. Terrible. Compared to PS3 and 360 graphics anyway. They're about what you'd expect from the Gamecube / PS2, though obviously they'll get better after the launch titles. Still anyone who wants to bitch about them a lot is generally missing the point behind the system itself. Like, you -knew- it was a far weaker graphical system than the other two, right? RIGHT?!?

Multiplayer with multiple wii-motes works very well and is pretty fun (Played Wii Sports and Rayman multi so far with them), however you do need a bit of room to play everything on. There's enough flinging and swinging going on to cause damage to others or any breakables in the area if you aren't careful.

Overall <3 the system and wish I had more time to play it. Stupid school and work.

I give it 3 months before we hear the first wii related death.

Other than that... I've never really cared about the initial release of the consols themselves... mainly because the first games are generally terrible, and who needs the competition.
However: When SSB Brawl comes out - you'll see me in line.

I played Wii Sports. The Wii-mote is badass.

One thing that Nintendo has always done well is make games that are fun to play.

I generally stick away from Nintendo products.  Currently I'm broke (with playing magic and college and all) so I'm sticking to final fantasy 12 (which is an AMAZING game once you get used to the combat/gambit systems).   I must check out Twilight Princess though.  That game looks amazing.   And I absolutely HATE Super Smash Bros.  But the fact that "brawl" has one of my favorite video game charecters ever rumored in it (Solid Snake from the MGS series) I might have to check it out.

I waited in line saturday night. 8 hours of cold.

The Wii as exceeded all of my expectations, the controller is better than I thought it would be, the online features are (or will) be awesome, and the system price tag is very good compared to the other two pieces of hardware available.

Twilight Princess is everything I ever could have hoped for. Definetly justifies the extra year it spent in development.

Keep in mind that Twilight Princess was originally a Gamecube-only title, and was in development for the Wii a surprisingly short amount of time.  It's a fantastic game (a friend of mine has done nothing but play it in his free time, and from what I've seen of it, it may be the best Zelda yet), but the graphics show its unusual development.

I did manage to snag a PS3, but I'm reselling it (damn you, market forces, for having the price halve in six hours!) no matter what.  The system's worth less than a box of bricks to me (actually, I'd -much- rather have the bricks), so even if I have to break even on it, I'll be placated.

Wii launch for Germany is Dec. 8th, and I'm definitely getting up early on that day. Since I expect the target audience to be stopped by uni or school, I don't expect big difficulties in picking one up without pre-order. Most major chains here didn't even take pre-orders, as well as amazon.de which has also stopped a while ago.

What I'd me most interested in is what you picked up for launch. I'm not a console gamer and the Wii is going to be my first, but the controls are just far too intriguing *not* to have one. My plan is Wii + Wii Sports, an extra Wiimote (maybe with Wii Play, if it's available), Zelda, and either Rayman or Super Monkey Ball. I tend to Rayman because it has crazy bunnies instead of weird monkeys, but I'm really not sure. Red Steel doesn't excite me with Far Cry: Vengeance already announced, and Excite Truck -- meh, I'm not into racing games, though it's probably fun. Trauma Center looks quite weird to me and not like my style.

So what did you get?

Zelda: Twilight Princess and Trauma Center. Played Red Steel and hated the controls, they needed to be revamped again.

Played Rayman and Monkey Ball 4 player at friend's houses and the multi player for both games was awesome. Very Happy So many mini games. If you're going to play with friends a lot, these games are good distractions until SSBB.
Rayman = Warioware
Monkey Ball = Mario Party

And I absolutely HATE Super Smash Bros.

Take that back this instance.  Very Happy

I have not yet played the Wii system, but the idea of the controller pisses me off a little. On a slightly different subject, a friend of mine got a PS3, and I believe I can say that like it more than the 360. However, when they make a new Halo for it I am sure I will say otherwise. I have only played Call of Duty 3, which is amazing, along with Tony Hawk's Project 8, which also was great if you like that kind of game. He pre-ordered the new Rainbox Six which will be in stores on the 19th if I am not mistaken, and the game itself looks good.

Yeah, currently debating on which one to buy. Went with Sony on my last two consoles and considered myself a sony fanboy, but I really think they didn't quite think this one through. The price tag on the PS3 is extremely intimidating (even more so when you look at the Wii sticker price), dropping more than a month's rent on a video game system makes me a VERY sad panda. I was looking through the games being offered by both systems and the ones that I found appealing for the PS3 were also available on the Wii (Call of Duty/Madden) but the Wii also had what appears to be a very fun looking new zelda game. The Wiimotes also look like a really fun innovation. The 360....yeah....had my HALO junkie stage(s) on my roommate's XBOX, but the novelty really REALLY wore off after that as there's not a single other Xbox title I felt/feel inclined to play. Sure, I may shed a tear when HALO 3 comes out.....but I'll get over it.

Also, can anybody fill me in on something...does Sony still have a stranglehold on Square? I remember I initially came to Sony because it was the only system with Final Fantasy VII (Still a tad broken up about Aeris....Advent Children gave me no closure and sucked hardcore) and have stuck with them since. I've noticed commercials for a remade Final Fantasy III for the Nintendo DS so I'm not really sure what their deal is. If I can expect to see FF games on the Wii this would make my choice MUCH simpler.

A couple of my friends went with the PS3, they waited in line from Tues. night til Friday morning and managed to get 4, and sold 2 on ebay for 1300 each.  The system is a lot of fun, Resistance is pretty good and I really like the wireless setup (controllers, internet are both nice).  Teh Sixaxis thing is pretty meh so far, only the Motor Storm demo really uses it to its full potential and its incredibly difficult to drive a car by tilting your controller.  The Blu-Ray player built in really helps, as they are pretty expensive otherwise so its a pretty good deal if you have an HD TV.  I also like the online play (which is completely free, other than of course buying new games but all the play and demos are free), so far it seems pretty solid and not having to get XBOX Live or something evens out the prices a lot (on PS3 vs. XBOX360).  Overall, I like the system, but for $600 I personally can't justify it any time soon.  I am excited for the Wii and new Mario Party / Zelda, a friend said he might pick one up today so hopefully I get to try that out too.

They're making a new Crystal Chronicles for the wii.  I didn't play the original for the gamecube, but my friends love it.

I had no cash at launch, so I'm hoping to get one for Christmas.  I can't wait for TP and SSBB.  A friend who works at Toys-R-Us (he and his manager cracked one open the night before launch and played for 3 hours after closing) said Call of Duty 3 was godlike, so I'm excited for that as well.

EDIT:  Just found out that Call of Duty has no multiplayer and only about 10-12 of gameplay.  I think maybe I'll go 50-50 on it with a friend since I hate buying games with little replay value.

Oh!  I also really excited about the new Far Cry and the new Resident Evil (I heard it was in the same style as RE4!) for the Wii.  No idea when they're coming out, though.

I have wanted Twilight Princess ever since it was first announced at E3 2004. It feels like I have been frozen in a glacier for five thousand years in anticipation. I have been waiting for that far longer than the Wii, which I would have gotten after I had had my fill of Twilight Princess. Later, I found out that TP would be a Wii launch title. I dismissed this, knowing that it would still be released for the Gamecube. However, when I found out that the Wii's launch was being shifted forward and the Gamecube version's launch was being delayed, I decided to change my reservation. However, EB Games, a fine game retailer, would allow me to reserve games for the Wii but not the system itself (The logical thing to do Rolling Eyes). So every Saturday for the next month or so, I would call the store to ask if they were allowing reservations. One week, I called this fine retailer and instead of hearing what I expected - "No, we're not taking reservations for the Wii yet" - I instead got something worse - "No, we are no longer taking reservations for the Wii. We stopped taking them at 5:00 yesterday". My only hope was to wait in line to get it. However, I have a long history of wussing out on important things...

Long story short, I own a copy of Twilight Princess but no console with which to play it. FISSION MAILED.

Also, can anybody fill me in on something...does Sony still have a stranglehold on Square?

From what I understand, the basic premise is this:

Sony gets:

New FF Games (PS3 gets XIII [and XIII vs] and presumably XIV and XV)
Kingdom Hearts
Dragon Quest

Nintendo gets:

Remakes of old FF games (Although they'll be done after VI is released for the GBA - VII, VIII, and IX are being released for PSP)
FF:CC (Which is a great game - I was lucky enough to have 3 friends with which to play it and it was a good experience. I'm really looking forward to it being online which might not end up being a good thing)
The Mana Series (Children of Mana, Tree of Mana, etc.)
Knockoffs of other games/franchises (such as this, this, this, and this)

Microsoft gets:

FFXI
...pretty much left out of the loop.

One word about Final Fantasy III - my only real problem with it is that now I am at a point in the game where I basically have to go through three dungeons in a row and then face the final boss with no save point whatsoever. But aside from that, it's a very solid game.

Oh!  I also really excited about the new Far Cry and the new Resident Evil (I heard it was in the same style as RE4!) for the Wii.  No idea when they're coming out, though.
If you're talking about RE5, that's onle for PS3 and 360. However, there is also word of an RE game for the Wii, though I don't know much else about it. Honestly, I'd just be happy if they ported 4. it would be much easier to have a chainsaw controller.

EDIT: Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles. Coming 2007.

As for Brawl, if anyone could translate the Japanese at the end of this trailer, it would be much appreciated.

Yeah, I was referring to Umbrella Chronicles with the RE remark.  RE4 was god-like, though--it's probably one of my favorite GC games.

NCM, if you haven't already, you should call your local retailers.  Our shops got new shipments in on Thursday and Friday--I'd be suprised if stores in your area didn't as well.  My friend just picked one up on Friday after arriving 20 minutes too late at Toys-R-Us on launch (they had 13 Wii's after presale reservations, and he was 15th in line).

I bought a ps3, definatly selling it on ebay in a week. Halo 3 is slated to come out next christmas with 3 versions. Nomral $60, collectors $70(with bonus dvd yada yada) and a Legendary edition $100(scalled master chief helmet and the bonus dvd). You can preorder these where I work at ebgames/gamestop(shameless plug for a company I really hate working at...) And for those that want a wii, the company ships out about 3-12 systems per store per week depending on the revenue of the store. Find out what time the store near you gets shipment and call it daily mon-fri about 20 minutes after their shipment arrives and you should be able to go and get it before word goes out about it.

I paid $50 extra for a Wii at a local independent game store on Black Friday so I could play it Thanksgiving weekend with the family.  (Actually, the store is called "Game Store", as though the store itself came from an old NES game.)

So far I've played Wii Sports, Rayman, and Monkey Ball as multiplayer games.  Rayman sucks a bit because you have to unlock the minigames in single player before you can play multiplayer.  Also, many of the minigames are alternating multi-player rather than simultaneous.  Wii Sports is definitely the most fun, but it definitely takes a while to get used to how the controls work.  While it's fairly easy to make your character do the right thing, you actually have to try out different movements until you discover how the Wii is monitoring your motion for each game, otherwise you'll be plagued with inconsistency.  Everyone who played Wii Sports said "I got to get one of these."  So it's pretty much the most fun you can have with a video game console, unless you're this girl.

I've also been playing single player Zelda.  I guess I'm about half way through (I just restored the third spirit).  I'm pretty much unimpressed with it.  It might be as good or better than the other games of that sort out now; I don't really know, because I haven't played a game like it for about ten years.  All the things that were a pain in the ass about these kinds of games way back when (not knowing what to do next because you misinterpreted some dialogue, it taking a long time to go from point A to point B and then finding out that point B wasn't where you were trying to go anyway, having to do something just so to trigger an event, totally linear storyline, environments that are constructed with no logic besides impeding your progress, etc.) are still there.  And I see that this 3D stuff is ten years old and games still can have clipping problems.  Anyway, all of this just reminds me of why I stopped playing this kind of game in the first place.  Also, why in the hell am I a wolf?  If I'm playing Zelda, I want to be a pretty little elf boy, not a wolf, dammit.

I only had to stand in line 2 hours to get Wii on the release night. this was girlfriends idea. Twilight princess as whole is very fun. however I have one major complaint.
Why is the water temple always such a pain in the ass in every zelda game? the most backtracking, most obscure visual clues, most complicated switch puzzles, and always an underwhelming boss. I hate fucking water temples!

I snagged a PSIII.  I honestly have no idea how anyone could be disappointed in the system.  Perhaps it's just because my friend at MIT got 6 free ones and he realizes how huge it is to have 8 cell processors beating the living crap out of all graphics operations.  If you're comparing it's normal resolution, yeah it's not so beautiful, but I'm sitting here on a 40" LCD with absolutely no delay in the graphics and I've gotta say...it's friggin' awesome!  On the PS2 I could typically lag out the system in a couple of seconds by overloading the inputs, but so far nothing causes the PS3 to slow down.  What'll be better is when my friend finishes the developer package for the cell engines and then we get that to developers, but that's still at least a year away so I'm really happy they have anything optimized with that engine so far.
As for selling it...let's just hope the stock market keeps doing what it does and I'll pretend I didn't drop $600 on this system...  If I needed money I would definitely sell it, but since I'm looking to get a profit of only $400-$500 on the system it makes more sense to keep it.  Plus all I do is play video games and magic...hey when is magic workstation coming out on the PS3?  ;-}

The main problem i have with the PS3 is that the graphics aren't good enough. I've seen Resistance: Fall of man and Gears of war on a 360 on the same plasma HD and Gears looks BETTER. The PS3 is far superior hardware wise, but it's flagship "graphic" game cant compete with something on a system a year old with far fewer graphic capabilities.

As for the Wii, i love it Zelda is amazing, Wii sports is mint and im still the bowling champ within my group of friends Very Happy, red steel sucked and trauma center was interesting to say the least. Twilight princes was meant for GC so it wont be close to as good as the release of the next Zelda game that is being made specifically for the Wii, its been in the works for a year now and will no doubt be out sometime in the next year.

The PS3 has good graphics. That's the only thing that I've heard remarked about it that's been positive.

The Gaming Club here has a Wii. We've managed to convince people who haven't played video games in years to play it and they love it so far.

I agree.  When I went to the water temple, the first thing I thought was "Can't they make a water temple where you don't need to fricking change the level of water twelve times?"

At least this one wasn't as bad as ocarina of time... I had trouble getting through that one WITH the player's guide, the second time I did it.   Rolling Eyes

To be fair, it's only using 6 cell processors for graphics.  One is devoted to the OS and security, and they cut the 8th one because they weren't getting a noticeable improvement in graphics with it, since the overhead of combining 7 processors was more than the output of that processor.  Not all tasks parallelize well.
My problem with the PS3, aside from the artificial console shortage, exorbitant price tag and crappy release titles, is that Sony is making the PS3 as a game console, but as part of the corporate bottom line.  THe PS3 is more of a marketing tool than anything else.  They put a Blu-Ray player in there to win the high-def wars and to try to sell more hi-def TVs, and they made it a cell processor project so they can help split the cost of that technology with Toshiba (and Panasonic?) to... sell more hi-def TVs.

The PS3 is more of a marketing tool than anything else.

Don't say these things!  *nanananana I can't hear you nananananana*  Seriously, it's okay to say that right now because all of the good titles except for Resistance are not released.  But...I double dog dare you to say that after February.  Fight night is just a port but I still bought it cuz I like beating heads.  Still, punching through my opponent's head and seeing the engine break in fight night is really disconcerting.  I shall refrain from all judgements until I get angels and tekken, however, because we all knew they had poor software dev. except for Resistance and true to their word, Sony put out absolute dog 5h|t for titles aside from it.  Everyone knows the fighting games are going to cap out performance and graphics, so I again reiterate that I'm happy there are any games at all for the playstation 3 right now.  Even if sony has a bunch of morons running the company (come on...blue ray?!?!?! wtF) with the playstation 1 and 2 sony proved their worth as hardware developers and I'll give them at least a few months on this hardware before I say they screwed up royally with the software.  But yes, the titles are worse than pathetic aside from Resistance.  I can't say I'm disappointed in the 30 player online action on Resistance, and that I can actually find games online really easily and it works through my router is key.  I beat marvel ultimate alliances in about two days but was entertained the entire time, so I would wager the AI is friggin' amazing and we just have to wait for the titles.
Thanks for the info about the processors, although I'm not on the project so I don't need to know jack about the PS3.  Word to being a consumer, though.
And Limbo, you do realize that the Wii controller is being ported to the XBox360, right?  Just cuz you love the controller doesn't mean you should get stuck with gamecube graphics and that controller.  But yeah, if I wanted some f'ing games aside from resistance and a port of fight night to play right now I'd definitely have a Wii.

If this is true, it would be hot. Me and my brother have both, so we could share games. hothothot!

The Wii is really fun, but I'm soooo disappointed with the graphics. They look like shit!

Trauma Center is AWESOME, who knew surgery could be so fun? The game really gets difficult later on, especially if you want to S everything in the game. Kind of a nice change of pace from the usual, 'wow this is easy' games for every system for like the last year.

I've been trading PS3's for Magic cards.  I do still have 2 20 GB and a 60 GB to move, which is disappointing considering the low mark up is and how close we are to Christmas.  Overall I think the price tag on the PS3's is out of the range for most people.  I've dropped my asking price to $600 for the 20 GB a $700 for the 60 GB.  Even that low, people struggle to come up with that kind of money.

PS3 prices are supposed to be down big time on eBay. Like 50 dollars below MSRP down.

I don't think that Microsoft will have a Wiimote this generation. Microsoft has never shifted any paradigms, and that's exactly what the Wiimote is: paradigm-shifting. It makes a ton of games possible that otherwise wouldn't be. (Wii Sports, Rayman, Trauma Center, etc.)
