TOURNAMENT MOVED ONE WEEK LATER TO SUNDAY 12/23. CHANGE FORCED BY WEATHER.
Hello. It is with great pleasure that I announce my final mox tournament. This is the grandaddy of what I consider a successful trilogy. While I won't be quitting, this is basically my way of saying 'thank you' to all those who I have encountered in my 5+ years of playing this format. So without further ado...
FEINSTEIN'S MOX TOURNAMENT: THE FINAL FRONTIER
WHEN: SUNDAY. DECEMBER 23.
WHERE: DISPOSEABLE HEROES
COST: $25
REGISTRATION- 10:15-10:45. START TIME- NOON.
FORMAT: TYPE ONE 15 PROXY
WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU:
1st- Mox Sapphire 2nd- Signed Mox Pearl 3rd- Playset of Underground Seas 4th- Playset of Volcanic Islands 5th- Playset of Tropical Islands 6th- Playset of Tundras 7th- Playset of Tundras 8th- Playset of Taigas
BOTH MOXES ARE GUARANTEED REGARDLESS OF ATTENDANCE!
The other prizes shown above are based on 40 people. Prizes will increase past 40 people. New changes made to make up for postponement =)
Store Info:
DISPOSABLE HEROES 1428 HARTFORD AVE JOHNSTON, R.I. 02910 (401)432-7710
Located in Bond Plaza above the Corner Pockets Bar and Grille. It's across from Wendy's. There's pretty much 20 different palces to eat within 2 minutes of the location, but food will also be on hand.
I already have a staff contracted for this also. My judges are top notch as always. This will be competitive level rules enforcement but the emphasis will be the 4 F's: Fair, Fun, Friendliness... and Feinstein :p
This is what I consider to be my last hurrah for running tourneys and believe me when I say it will worth the trip, from wherever you're coming from. I have massively enojyed running these tourneys and this one will be the best of all.
More updates to come. I look forward to seeing you on SUNDAY December 23rd. Thanks as always for your support.
- Dave Feinstein =)

This double mox tourney seems absolutely amazing and Dave deserves 0 bashing in general. He says he wants to give back to the vintage community and shouldnt be receiving anything but positive affirmation. I'll bring two cars of people who fully support anything Dave does. His previous tourney was run great and was in a great venue.

I have some updates. I have top 8 prizes set tentatively, although things could still change between now and December. The tundras I was going to involve for pre-reg I just moved to the main. No one has pre-registered at this point so you don't have to worry about contacting me, although about 40 different people told me in person that they'd be coming with friends, so that's encouraging. I have some things lined up like doorprizes and side tourneys, but I have to wait and see how many people show. Again, Ideally... I'm going to give away everything I want to give away if the right number of people show. Those top 8 prizes are about as nutty as I can make them (although I'm trying to make those 8th place taigas something else :p), but I plan on adding more prizes outside of top 8 if enough people show. Now for my FAQ: Q: What's this I hear about byes? A: If you've been to both of my other tourneys, you have the option of buying a round 1 bye for $5. This is not required, it's simply a little extra something I thought I'd offer to those who have supported me from the start. Here's a list of those eligible: 1. Arik Pogrebinsky* 2. Bill Copes* *Both have paid for byes for making top 2 at my last tournament, as announced at my previous tourney 3. Joe Bernier 4. Stefan Ellsworth 5. Erik Andersen 6. Ryan Marek 7. Justin Brinner 8. Dana Renfrew 9. Doug Pimm 10. Lloyd Anderson 11. Brian Rozzero 12. Rich Meyst 13. Marc Tuttle 14. Matt McNally 15. Ryan Bourgoin So if you're on that list you can buy a round 1 bye for $5... that's entirely up to you. The event will be big enough where having 10-15 round 1 byes shouldn't be an issue. Q: Is this really your last tournament? A: As far as I'm concerned it is. I mean I try to never say never and it could change anytime down the line, but this looks like my last one. Most of my expensive cards are already listed as prizes (with more to come probably) and I'm at the point where I'm very happy with what I've done in vintage and I just want to be able to give back to people. This is not about the money, as I've said from the start. If it was about the money I would've charged more than $25, but I want people to be able to say that this was the best tourney they could ever play in for the cost... and I'm confident that will happen. I just want to go out with a bang, and this is much more satisfying to me than ebaying my cards. Q: Are you quitting? A: Don't know. I'm definitely taking a step back from playing vintage. That much I know. Q: Does this mean you won't be buying or selling cards? I don't plan on buying/selling at this time but that could change. There will be dealers on hand and they will be buying/selling all day. Let me also add I don't personally plan on buying my prizes. The point is to give it away. The one-site dealers will have plenty of cash so I expect them to buy. Q: Will you be following the December 1st Banned and Restricted list? A: Yes. This tourney will use the December B&R list if there are any changes. Q: What rules enforcement will this be? A: This will be competitive level rules enforcement, but my judges are top notch and understand that vintage is a different format than other ones. The focus will be on fun. Q: I'm traveling from CT/NH/MA/PA/ME/Guam... will this be worth the trip? A: Most people who came to my other tourneys traveled over an hour to get there... many over 2 hours. People tell me I do a good job. I'm aiming to make this one my best. Q: Any prizes outside of top 8 lined up? A: If I get over 60 (I feel I will), the very first thing I will do is add 9-16th prizes. Good ones :p From there I'd like to do side tourneys as well. If I get some ridiculously large amount of people (over 90) then I plan on paying all the way down to top 32. Realistically I think I'll get somewhere in the 60-80 ball park for this, but I'm prepared to give out as much in prizes as I possibly can... you just have to show up :p Q: If I get stuck in traffic will I still get a late penalty? A: Unfortunately yes. People have been stuck in traffic for my other tourneys and I was able to hold them a little later... I do not have that luxury this time. Due to the amount of people I expect I have to adhere to my start times. Doors open at 9:00, registration starts at 9:15 and ends at 10:45. You have to be able to give me a decklist in that time frame to ensure no late penalty. I hate penalities :p Just show up a little earlier than normal if you plan on going to this and there should be no issues. =) Q: Where can I get food? A: Everywhere :p The store is within striking distance of about 12 different fast food places and is located above a fantastic eatery... Corner Pocket Bar and Grille. Add to that the store having pizza/drinks/chips available... and I think food is covered. Q: Why is this FAQ so long? A: I wanted to cover as much as possible :p That's it for now. Thank you again for your support. - Dave Edited unnecessary inflammatory segment. -Jacob

instead of fixing the position of the duals could you allow people to just take their pic based on where they finish? or is that too much hassle?

I'll worry about that when the tourney actually happens. I don't want to promise things that I may not be able to deliver on. If the people are there, I can give those advertised prizes out. That's concern #1. Assuming I get the people I need, then I can worry about if people should be able to pick their dual. To be honest I think 3rd-8th is close to dead on as far as preferable order of picking, so I don't forsee changing that. But it's still early so who knows.
I'm just working on getting prizes to be the best I can possibly make them. I'm still not happy with that 8th spot (I enjoy my taigas :p)

Hey Dave,
I've been trying to monitor what's been going on at home back in the ol' East coast since I've moved 3,000 miles away, and I'm really sad to see that this is your last tournament. From what I gather by reading all the posts from people who have actually been to your event, you've been doing an excellent job. It's truly impossible to please everyone all of the time.
I'll be flying in from Seattle for Worlds, and depending on whether I come in the week before or instead stay for the week after (I haven't decided yet), I may be able to attend your event. In fact, I may even be renting a car to drive up there for the weekend! I really miss the Vintage scene in New England, and it's always great to see different people running events. I wish you the very best of luck.
@ TMD: The food and drinks at the Corner Pocket are awesome. I highly recommend you get the Big Texan Burger, it's delicious!

Happy Thanksgiving from Teh Feinstein. Here's a big giant long overdue update.
I had a friend make me the flyer that you now see at the top of this thread. He did a great job but missed what I felt to be an important detail, so see if you can figure out what I added :p
Missing on the flyer but posted here is that those top 8 prizes are based on 60 people, as I've said all along. Duals have actually risen lately so 60 players isn't exactly the break even point for me anymore but that's fine. I'm still basing the posted top 8 prizes on that 60 (moxes guranteed regardless of attendance) because I want this to be a truly special event. I feel like getting that 60 won't be a problem so here's the top 16 prizes laid out as well:
9th - 12th polluted delta (based on 65 people) 13th - 16th flooded strand (based on 70 people)
I have an 8 person side tourney of foreign black bordered mana crypt and tolarian academy lined up for $5 entry... but if I get 70 people then this side tourney will be free. =)
I've already started helping people get decks for this shindig. I am not hard to find so again if you need cards just let me know. I am 110% determined to help you get cards and most competitive decks can be built on almost any collection when 15 proxies are allowed.
There will be a dealer buying/selling cards.
As for the previous update I just completely edited out the entire section on who isn't allowed. Those few individuals know who they are and it was causing headaches which I was not looking to do.
As for future updates they're coming. I will be at worlds playing in the win-a-car-tournaments...trying to win a car. :p Please feel free to say hi if you're there and if you have any questions about my event please let me know. I'm arranging flyers to be on hand there as well but I've been handing them out at local events recently (thank you to Ray and ELD for allowing me to do so).
As always any querstions can also be left here or PM'd to me. I will do everything in my power to make sure you have a great time.
So that's really it for now. See you all on December 23rd.
- Dave Feinstein

Ty for the kind words brassman. You should fly back for my tourney... see if Travis can buy you a ticket =p
In addition to the giant update I just put up, I just want to remind people that this tourney is in fact on a Sunday. Many people have contacted me privately telling me they'd be there and have made plans off... some of them making plans for a Saturday off =o
My tourneys have always been on Sundays. I edited the title to reflect that because the tourney takes place at Disposeable Heroes once again on a Sunday. If you show up Saturday there will be no tournament... but you might catch me randomly drafting :p
This is just about two weeks away and I've set aside all the prizes and am working on other aspects of the tourney at this point. I will make sure the store has ample supplies (mainly sleeves) and they will once again have plenty of refreshments including pizza. If you're not a pizza person there are literally 20 different places to eat within 2 minutes of the store. I will attempt to do a food break at some point but I have to wait and see how large attendance is before making that decision.
For those wondering about time frame, my previous two tourneys started on time and ended within 5-6 hours of that start time. With the earlier start time for this one I expect the tourney to be somewhere in the 7-8 hour framework for the swiss rounds and then top 8 to conclude. This could be longer or shorter it's just a guesstimate for those traveling from afar. I can say that my staff goes out of their way to make sure everything runs smoothly and they've done a great job previously of ensuring that.
Should be a fun time. =)
That's it for now on updates.
- Dave

About to leave for New York and Worlds, but wanted to do one more update before I do so.
Some questions I've received in the past week:
Q: Do ELD proxies count as proxies? A: Yes. Any proxies still count as proxies for my tourneys. This is how it's always been because I want everyone to have equal access to them. ELD has some of the best looking proxies around though so if you have them I encourage you to use those before using a sharpie, but anything that's not actually the real card (and there will be deck checks :p) counts as a proxy. Again if there's any issue at all with going above 15 proxies the best thing to do is let me know. I've already lent out several cards for people and even if I'm not able to lend it to you I will go out of my way to get you the card. Just let me know =)
Q: I don't have any fancy proxies and need to make some. What do you recommend? A: Sharpie or marker on a land would be preferable, but I have no problem with same cost cards becing used as proxies. I.E. Welding jar as a mox sapphire. Don't use a creature to proxy a sorcery. It's just common sense stuff. I'm very straight forward with proxies, just make them clear.
Q: Will you be following the banned and restricted list? A: Yes. There were no changes to the December B&R announcements (whether I like it or not :p) so everything that was legal stays legal.
Q: What can I sell to you? A: Lots of stuff :p I'm going to try to buy what I can. I dealt at my first tourney and had a ton of fun doing it. I certainly don't mind dealing it's just I'm not made of money I'll have to portion what I can buy. I'll have oodles and noodles of cards on me to sell and anyone who's bought from me before knows I price my cards to move. I'll have people manning my dealer table and if you need something and don't see it just ask.
Just another reminder, this tourney STARTS at 11:00. Registration is 9:15 to 10:45. You have to have your decklist handed in by 10:45 to avoid any potential penalities. I hate penalities but for this tourney I have to stick with my posted start times to make sure the event runs on time. Best possible advice I can give here is leave a half hour earlier than you normally would. Traffic and/or weather could be an issue so just leave earlier.
That is about it. The interest in my tourney has been very positive and I thank you all for it. Again I'll be in New York all this week so please if you're at Worlds say hi. I'm going to attempt to win a car (and fail miserably :p). I'll have type one decks on me and am always happy to play. I'll still be checking on here frequently so please keep all questions coming. I will do my best to answer them.
Thanks again for your interest in my tourney, it really does mean alot to me.
See everyone on Dec. 23rd.
- Dave Feinstein

Hello again with what I expect to be my final update before the tourney. I have returned from worlds. It was a good time. I did not win a car :p I did however get to meet many good peoples and talk with familiar faces as well. I picked up some things specifically for the tourney. I have some surprises planned but here's a sneak peek of one: Spawned from the goody table comes... the goody bag! =X I'm also very excited to announce I actually have a dealer... a damn good one. I was able to get the last minute services of Josh Smith, who is simply one of the best New England dealers around and has been a staple of the Boston Pre-Releases for many years. Josh and his brother Matt are truly great dealers and I'm thrilled to be able to have them for my tourney. Josh will have several cards on him as well as plenty of cash to buy anything you want to sell. He usually has gigantic crowds at his pre-release table and there's a very good reason for that: he's an awesome dealer. Best of all, Josh should be able to buy out any prizes won if the winners choose to sell. This is important to me because although I did not want to buy my own cards back, I did want players to have the option to sell the prizes they won. I'm very very excited for this weekend and the next few days will be focused completely on that. I'm still getting questions from people in my PM box and that's great. Please keep them coming as I want to be able to answer you. You being at my tourney means alot to me so if there's anything at all that's an issue please let me know. The doors to the venue should be open at 9. My dealer and staff should be in place by 9:30. We'll be taking signups as soon as possible. It'd be good if you're able to print out your own decklist and fill it out ahead of time. There are many places to get decklists but this is the official place for decklists: http://www.wizards.com/DCI/downloads/DecklistConstructed.pdfFinal reminder about start time: 11:00 sharp! Deck reg ends at 10:45. My advice would be to show up by 10:30 at the absolute latest. You always want to give yourself time to get cards or update your list. If you show up without a decklist I'll have plenty of blanks on hand, just give yourself time to fill them out because I need to start this event promptly at 11:00. You don't want to be bit by the late penalty bug. :p I've covered just about everything I think. This really is my planned last tournament so I will be pulling out all the stops to make sure you have a great time. Thank you so much for the interest and the support. See you on Sunday, December 23rd. =) - Dave Feinstein

This is a late-breaking highly important update:
Tourney now starting at NOON due to weather
There's a major Nor'Easter coming Sunday with possible blizzard like conditions.
As of right now the tournament is still scheduled to go off. I'm going to start it an hour late so it's back to noon. As long as I'm actually able to run the tourney then it will go off. I've planned this thing for 4 months so short of a blizzard or completely undriveable conditions this will go as planned.
My advice would be keep your eyes peeled to this thread, but as long as I can run my tourney I will. If it becomes a blizzard with undriveable highways then I'd have no choice but to cancel. I'm not going to have people risk their lives to come to this. As of right now it's not looking like a blizzard, just a storm. Also, it's vintage. We'll drive through almost anything =D
My advice would be to those traveling to take it slow. Very slow :p Store's phone number is (401) 432-7710. Any issues driving up Sunday then call here. Myself or Nick, the store manager, will answer.
The new noon start time is the same as my past tourneys. I'm already pushing the tourney back an hour to accomodate for the weather so please try to show up on time. The tourney will be starting AT noon. Deck-Reg up until 11:50. Despite the weather conditions I'll have to stick to that as close to this as possible. If you think you'll be late call the store. I can't promise no late penalties but if I know about you I'll do what I can.
So if this turns into a blizzard I would be forced to cancel and that would be posted here. That would make me the saddest panda of all time. As of this typing I don't expect a cancellation but I had to mention the possibility of it in case Mother Nature has a change in heart. H8 mother nature, H8.
As of right now everything is still as planned. My staff + dealer are still on board and all prizes are still set aside. Doors will now open around 10:00 and deck-reg will be until 11:50. I'm looking forward to this tourney very much and seeing all of you there.
Please plan accordingly due to the weather and thanks again.
- Dave =)
P.S. @ Sporkcore/T00l: Don't expect to see me dancing a jig :p

This is going to be tough driving from Western Mass as I heard its going to be a record breaking storm, some places call for up to 4ft (thats taller than some vintage players *cough carl*)

I've planned this thing for 4 months so short of a blizzard or completely undriveable conditions this will go as planned.
hey dave, when will the final determination be made about the tourney? could you please give some of us who are going to travel from afar a guarentee this will go off rain/snow/shine? If I travel down, and have to turn around and go home that would a terrible waste of a day off for me, and others involved. also, i would like some clarification on your statement about 'as long as i'm actually able to run the tourney' - does this mean you have a set limit of players that you need to run it, or does it mean as long as you can get there yourself you will run it? I'm a little nervous to be honest because i think the weather will be a hinderance...that's why I am asking for some sort of communication as to either a cancellation point (Early Sun Morning posted on TMD if possible? or can you set some time for those of us who only look at TMD once in a while?) or some idea as to whether or not you will still try to run this bad boy if you only get 23 players... thanks, Mike

Well I thought I was pretty clear but let me repeat- short of a blizzard I'm running this.
As of right now this storm will have messy but driveable conditions Sunday morning. Hence, not a blizzard.
'If I'm able to run this' means if the tourney is not canceled, I'm running it. Sorry if that wasn't clear.
If I cancel it would be posted here first, as I've said all along. At this point cancelation is highly unlikely, but the best thing to do is check one more time tomorrow and a final time Sunday before you leave. I don't enjoy even posting the possibility that the tourney could be canceled because it makes people antsy, but the weather forecasts have been shaky. The absolute latest I would cancel would be early Sunday morning, and again that would take a blizzard for me to do it. I will continue to keep checking the forecasts because your safety means more to me than running this tournament.
But as of right now...
The Tourney is running as planned. The only change is the noon start time.
The latest forecast says alot of rain and sleet with winds up to 40 miles an hour in Providence. Very driveable but again, go slow :p
I hope this answered your questions. Thank you for them and if you have anymore concerns just leave them here.
Again I'm starting the tourney an hour later, at noon. This should give everyone planning to come more than enough time and again if you have an issue on Sunday please call the store. If you have an issue before Sunday talk to me =)
Thanks again
- Dave

I've been wanting to go to a Feinstein event since he started them. From what I hear he runs a good event.
Now that I am able to go, I wouldn't miss this for the world.
Screw the snow...I'll be there...and so should you.

I was once asked on MWS, what the highest I ever finished at a TMD Open was. I replied, "I've never played in a Waterbury. I was then called "A TOTAL NOOB!"

I hate to say it but coming from Western Mass is going to be difficult, I cannot risk taking 4 other people with me and something happening, i wouldn't be able to live with that on my concience. Im not worried about my driving its the other people on the road really. I apologize everyone but were not going to make it to this one sans for the storm being called off or DQed, sorry Dave.

For flavor purposes, it should be made mandatory that everyone use snow-covered lands.

After much deliberation I have decided to postpone this to next Sunday, 12/23.
I realize the notice is late but after talking with numerous people and the store + my staff the weather is going to be too much of a risk for tomorrow.
I'm headed down to the store right now to post flyers stating the update. I'm very sorry for the late notice and I thank those who planned on braving the storm and coming tomorrow but I don't want you risking your life or anyone else's.
I'll be on hand for a bit tomorrow in case people show anyway. So many people told me they couldn't make it for tomorrow that I don't think people randomly showing will be an issue but I'm going to stop by in case there are some stragglers.
To make up for the rescheduling I'm basing all my prizes around 40 people instead of 60 for next week. Meaning all prizes posted are being given out next week if I get at least 40 people (both moxes still guaranteed regardless), and i'll be increasing prizes past 40 people.
Please spread the word to those who may not be able to read this about the reschedule. Again I apologize to those who did plan on going tomorrow but I can't control mother nature. =(
Hopefully I'll see everyone NEXT Sunday. Thank you again for the understanding and support.
- Dave
