Congrats to the Top 8's.

Just curious, are Wastelands hard to find in the North East and Midwest?  They are not prevalent in the Top 8 decks, that's for sure.  If they are prevalent in the field then are the Tyrant Oath lists just squeaking by game 1 or losing game 1 and fighting thru with Pithing Needles on Game 2 and 3?

It seems that until a Needle hits the board a Wasteland is huge against these lists.  I mean even Ghost Quarter would probably cause havoc!

Unless of course, Gush is just too good at dodging Wastes.  I haven't played enough Gush Oath yet to know for sure.  But, I would guess that Gush + Fastbond is effective at dodging Wastes and maintaining a high land count against Spheres/Thorns.  But, just Gushing to dodge a Wasteland w/o a Fastbond is not going to win games with a Sphere/Thorn in play. I'm curious to know the success of these Basic land lite lists if Wastes were more prevalent.

NE/MW players, up your Wasteland counts so we can find out!

Quick Metrics count:

Top 8 MD Open
Gush: 9
Merchant Scroll: 18 (Watch list for sure, or perhaps time to lighten the Tutor load once again!)
Wasteland: 0
Dream Halls: 0 (Un-restrict it!)

Top 8 TMD
Gush: 23
Merchant Scroll: 19
Wasteland: 4
Dream Halls: 0

Top 8 TMD Day 2
Gush: 13
Merchant Scroll: 11
Wasteland: 7
Dream Halls: 0

Why is no Flash player running Ponder? I have had totally positive experiences with the card in the deck. Theory supports them as well as practice.

I count Paul's list at 57 cards. Is he missing land (maybe 3 snow-covered island)?

On that same count, I only counted up 48 cards maindeck in Francis Hart's deck.  Any chance we can see the missing 12?

How did that top three split work?

"So, we all want to split, how about you?"
"No, I'd rather play it out."
"Okay, Paul, beat this kid so we can all go home.  In the mean time we're gonna go play Tekken, let me know if he creams you so we can reevaluate.  Dibs on finals if Paul loses!"

Steve's top-8 match (against Kyle Paster) took a while longer than the other ones, so by the time he was finished, Paul and Josh "Coffee Cup" Chapple were already into game two of their top-4.  I (Nat Moes) didn't really feel like playing anymore, being tired, hungry, and thirsty, and requested to Steve that we split.  He was okay with that.  Paul usually likes to play until he can pay for his trip, I think, since they come to Columbus from Pittsburgh.  I was definitely fine with $50 since my ride to the tournament took about 6 minutes.

Oh, I should point out that this tournament was awesome, and the addition of a cash bar was a great improvement.  Hopefully the Soldiery will try one of these again so that we can get more people to come.  The turnout was a little disappointing in both the Standard and Vintage events for what was offered.

Props:
All the Cleveland gamers who came, and to Cup, Angel, and Nam for T8'ing.
Getting to use the swank women's restroom since the men's was being remodeled.
New sleeves protecting my cards from alcohol.  Also, alcohol.

Slops:
Mulling six times in round one.
Subway being open from 12-2 p.m.
Where the heck was Twaun?
Demoralizing Josh Morford.  Josh if you read this, I'm holding on to your $20 until you get back into Magic.

I had a really good time. I've played two Vintage tournaments and I have two top-8's so I think that's a nice start. I think I may have made a mistake or two against Steve that could have maybe tipped the match in my favor, but I'm never ashamed to lose to my mentor. The guy practically taught me how to play Magic in my early days Smile

I just hope the meta keeps shifting towards a Flash friendly format! But I will be bringing some technology to the next tournament, so look out!  Very Happy

I know that my list was short 3 lands, so I'm not sure which one missed the list.  Probably LOA or the second island.

My top 4 match vs Flash was pretty terrifying.  Game 3 I started with 2 Leyline and he Rev Silenced them on turn 1, which left me sitting there with no FOW...  but he didn't have the win!  Good games, tho.
