Summoning Trap {4} {G} {G}
Instant - Trap
If a creature you cast this turn was put countered by a spell or ability an opponent controlled, you may pay {0} rather then pay Summoning Trap's casting cost.
Look at the top 7 cards of your library. You may put a creature card from among them onto the battlefield. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.

Seems like brutal Top hate in Legacy.  In Survival/Goblins/Naya stompy, you're almost sure to hit a bomb in 7 cards.

In vintage...it does make FoW on Teeg/Mindcensor/etc slightly less appealing.

Blue already deals with Storm via Stifle/Trickbind tricks, does the 'exile all spells' trap just look pretty or does it serve some awesome purpose?  I guess it could win a nasty counter war, if you have 2U open after you and your opponent have traded spells and counters three times...

Being able to Wish for Tormod's Crypt is a pretty cool guy, eh kills Ichorid and doesn't afraid of anything.  I don't think it is a better answer than Leyline, but I do think that it gives a deck that's already playing Wish a few more ways to answer - 4x Leyline, 1x Ravenous Trap in the board and you have a possible out G1 and a bunch of outs G2 - 3.  whee

Besides having the abilities to be a hard counter in the late game
and situationally awesome in a counter war,
it costs zero, so you can play it before you've taken a turn,
without having to keep mana up,
and without having to play certain colors.

This doesn't guarantee it will see play in Vintage.
But, this trap does fill a unique combination of roles,
so if at some point there is a hole in a deck or sideboard
that needs the above criteria met, this trap will have a use.

So, no, unless having three or more spells played in a single turn happens all the time,
and therefore makes this card a legitimate counterspell against most decks,
this card does not serve some awesome purpose,
but it could still find a niche of its own.

I mean, you could play it in a Belcher sideboard for the mirror match.
Or something.

Yeah, it is sort of a free counter for any deck to use against a big Tendrils/Warrens/etc.  I think being able to Wish is better than just playing it conditionally, even in the board, but time will reveal.  It's not like only Black decks play Leyline, right?  I think that will be the ultimate appeal of the free traps - being able to get good Instant-speed answers to relevant situations for 2U.

BTW, saw this on the spoiler today.  It's not technology by any means, but I love love love the flavor of it.

Blazing Torch   1

Artifact - Equipment    Uncommon

Equipped creature can't be blocked by Vampires or Zombies.
Equipped creature has: "{T}, Sacrifice Blazing Torch: Blazing Torch deals 2 damage to target creature or player."

Equip 1

Like I said, not great in constructed.  But I think it's well designed, the flavor is spot-on, and I sure wouldn't mind grabbing one in Limited.

Snakes... why'd it have to be snakes?!  I was on a Quest for the Holy Relic.

The tokens for this set look great, but I love the irony that a zombie giant was painted by someone named "Igor".

Full spoiler @ salvation.

I like the set I guess, I think the traps are probably the best part of the set insofar as old formats are concerned but I don't think that says much, since there's like two playables and the rest are either uber conditional or cost more than 0.  On the whole though, not as excited as I was about SoA.  mehh

Expedition Map   1
Artifact    Common
2, {T}, Sacrifice Expedition Map: Search your library for a land card, reveal it, and put it into your hand. Then shuffle your library.

Any playability in Stax? It tutors up your strip or tolarian, and you can weld it.

I don't know if it is better than crop rotation, but it might be in a mono red shell.

This could be something totally awesome.  If it is real obviously.

***EDIT***
On a side note, this is from an email just sent out by wizards, weird uh? Especially 7.3

ALL ORGANIZERS

Significant changes made to the
Magic Tournament Rules

The latest update of the Magic Tournament Rules was released on September 20. All organizers should read through the rules and familiarize themselves with the changes. There is one change that is of special note to Organizers and Judges everywhere:

Section 1.4 — Participation Eligibility
Tournament officials and other staff of a tournament (including the Tournament Organizer and Scorekeeper) may participate in a DCI-sanctioned tournament of which they are a tournament official or staff if (and only if) the tournament is of the following event types:
Friday Night Magic
Prerelease
Launch Party
Magic Game Day
Other non-Premier Magic Tournament
If tournament officials and other staff play in the event, it must be run at Regular REL. If tournament officials play in the event and the event it not one of the allowed event types list above, the event will be invalidated.<

Pretty simple and quite exciting! If you are the judge, organizer, or scorekeeper of a Friday Night Magic, Prerelease, Launch Party, Magic Game Day, or regular sanctioned tournament, you will soon be allowed to play in that event. All tournament officials are reminded that they are required to officiate events fairly and without regard to their own self-interest. This change in eligibility goes into affect October 1, 2009. If tournament officials play in any of their own events they run before that date, the events will be invalidated. Enjoy those Zendikar Launch Parties!

Of interest to all WPN Organizers and DCI tournament players are the following changes to the Magic Tournament Rules. The following changes to Limited Events go in to effect immediately:

Section 7.3 — Card Use in Limited Tournaments
Other than basic land, only cards from the expansions of the boosters opened (and only cards opened in that player's pool) may be used in a player's deck. For example, in a Magic 2010 Sealed Deck tournament, any card in a booster other then the Magic 2010 game cards received by the player and basic land may not be used in a player's deck during that tournament.

Section 7.5 — Sealed Deck Swap
In Sealed Deck tournaments, the Head Judge may require players to perform a deck swap prior to deck construction. Players receive unopened product and register the contents (except basic land cards) on deck lists. Any card in a booster that is not a card from the expansion of the opened booster is retained by the player that registers the cards (example: a player that registers the contents of a booster during a deck swap keeps the token card, if any). Players who drop from the tournament before fulfilling this duty will receive a match loss in the first round. Tournament Officials then collect the recorded card pools and re-distribute them randomly. A player may randomly receive the product he or she registered. The Head Judge should require players to sort the cards they register according to some criteria (e.g. color and then alphabetically) to assist the player receiving the pool.
WPN Organizers are encouraged to contact their WPN Representative or Wizards Customer Service if there are any questions or comments about these changes.

Well, the change to the DCI floor rules would be consistent with finding a Candelabra in the booster pack. Moreover, the theme of discovering hidden treasure of Zendikar would be very relevant to finding a Candelabra in a booster pack. It may or may not be a true rumor, but there's at least some serious evidence that it is true.

I originally was fairly skeptical, but this new rule really seems to suggest that this could be real. Really, really interesting and cool marketing tactic here if it is real.

This is actually disturbing news, as cool as it is.

The best base set since Beta. Enemy fetches. Staple mythics. Now this.

My guess is that Hasbro/WotC was looking at taking a huge loss due to the global recession, and they're pulling out all the stops to sell as many packs as humanly possible to weather the economic storm. It's entirely possible that some Hasbro exec stopped by and said, "you need to make X millions of dollars this year or we're gonna have to let you go" and this is their response.

Whether the reality is anything as grim as that, the takeaway here is that for one reason or another, Wizards' goal seems to be able to report record-breaking sales to their bosses. And it will probably work, because this is cool as hell, but it troubles me.

the only troubling part is what they do next set to top it and continue to generate interest in their product.

I'll be honest I haven't purchased a pack of magic cards outside of a prerelease since mirrodin block, and even then I went to maybe 4-5 pre releases.

If this get's me interested to purchase some packs or attend a pre release, I think they did their job for now.

The prices for these booster boxes is going out of control. I have seen some sites selling the booster boxes for up to and over 120.00$. SCG is already up to 110.00$, but when I bought two boxes from them three weeks ago the price was only 89$. I just hope I get an Ancestral Recall in my booster boxes ! lol. Wink

Vintage is a lovely format, it's too bad so few people can play because the supply of power is so small.

Chess really changed when they decided to stop making Queens and Bishops.  I'm just glad I got my copies before the prices went crazy.

I think it would be fun to draft with the all foil packs but really not that appealing- even with a rare in each pack, odds of making up the 12$ per booster isnt very good.

The odds of making up $3.75 from a regular Shards pack are even worse.

Sort of interesting that the Parallax series is allowed to use its old tricks.  I still run 3x P-Wave in the ol' Legacy Angel Stompy.  Doubt that I'll be using the exile trick all that often given the card's usual execution but it's nice to see that the option is there.

Foil Shards packs?  Pull my finger :/
