I am pretty new to vintage, and magic in general, and played in a vintage tourney with Oath the other day.  I had played with it very little before the event, which became evident turn 2, game 1 round 1.  I don't know what my opponent is playing and keep a hand with Wasteland, Jet, Oath, Orchard, Brainstorm, Thoughtseize, Chalice.
My opponent opens with Delta for Bayou and Duresses me, taking the oath and passes the turn.  I draw a Ruby for the turn and play Jet, thoughtseize revealing Delta, Recall, Confidant, Goyf, Goyf.  Awesome, BUG fish.  I take the Recall, waste the Bayou and pass the turn back.  We play draw, go for a few turns and all I draw is another Orchard, another Chalice and Hellkite.  About turn 4 My board is Chalice for 0, Mox, mox, Orchard, orchard just waiting for him to rip the second source and then bound way ahead with his bob, so I drop Chalice for 2.  In Oath.  Wow.  As soon as I do it I realize I really have no way to win short of hardcasting and Angel or dragon, or wipe away on my own chalice.  Awesome.  He proceeds to drop his second land, followed by a curse catcher and beats me to death with the tokens and the catcher.  He tells me after the game that he ended up with 4 goyfs, drawing them turns 2 and 3.
As I finish that game a friend also playing Oath walks up and tells me I won;t believe how bad he punted his match, but im sure i got him beat and tell him my sob story.  Apparently he messed up worse and scooped twice to Painters servant/grindstone.  Playing Oath.  With maindeck  blessing.  Wow.

Well this is in a really casual multiplayer game but it stands out.  3rd turn, I Show and Tell, playing Nicol Bolas.  My mana on the table... 2 blue and 1 red.  Next upkeep... epic fail.

Playing Gush Tendrils I had my master plan laid out, and it was a guarenteed win.  Then I forgot my plan, passed the turn with 8 cards in hand.  My opponent duresses and we notice I have 8 cards.  Judge is called and he discards one at random.  Unfortunately it was vamp tutor which was going to get me my win piece.  I go on to lose because now I have protection and ritual but no gas.

My hand was something like Ritual,   Ritual,   Bluecard,   Duress (Which I meant to play),   Vamp,   FoW,   Land,   Lotus.

Would have been a third turn kill for sure.  I stomped FlashHulk in 2 in my first round as I had FoW/Duress game 1 leading to like a fifth turn kill or so because I had to pitch something juicy to stop turn 1 flash.  Game 2 I had double force for first turn flash, and he had force backup on turn 1.  I felt bad.  Anyhow, I lose second round 2-0.  Game 1 I wasn't in.  Game 2 was mine but I kept drawing shit after the random discard.  Can't comment on game 3.  Next round I play my best friend, as we always play each other in tourneys.  He lost to something like Sliver or a ridiculous Tog hand while playing URphidian.  I ended up winning a tight one in 3, then lost the next round playing against Shockwave who was playing Confidant/Countertop Control.  It pretty much owned me.  I think I might have comboed out once but top + counter balance won every time it stuck.

Big tourney too, but my friend went on to split in the side event and I played out my remaining games.

If only...

How can I forget to duress.  Duress + Y. Will are the reason I play black.

I was sitting beside Menedian at a Star City Games 10 proxy and him playing Gro Atog against FLash while I was playing Flash VS Flash distracted me, I forgot to put my life counter on top of my deck, to remind me to pay 5 mana for my Pact of Negation, I could have won my game and moved on but I drew my card for turn without paying and lost.... big suck

A week or so ago, treyfour and I were playing a few games at our local shop. He was playing ritual Tez and I was playing shaymora.  Its his turn, he has six cards in hand and plays voltaic key, I respond with commandeer pitching the other two cards in my hand(misdirection & e.truth).  I had a timevault in play if this helps you understand why I would do something that risky as empty my hand over a barely significant card when he has a full hand. Also, he had not cast FOW yet either that game. Suprizingly, it resolved. Normally, I would never have done such a thing, but it was a casual game and I was like "what the hell, why not?".  Playing tons of casual games presents tons of situations where I learn why over extending and just plain wasting spells can turn games around for your opponent.  The more I thouht about that specific play, the more I thought it was the dumbest thing I had done. If he had the FOW, which by numbers and probability he did hypothetically, that game would have been over.  Now when he is playing the key, he always asks if I want to jack it, which always brings a chuckle or so.

I was watching a game at GP Chicago and one guy was stuck on one mana.
His opponent tried to wasteland his only land an underground sea. The player then tapped for blue cast brainstorm and dazed it returnig the land to his hand. The other guy then spell snared the daze. The guy shrugged confused and said "Thanks?"

the dumbest thing I did was scooping after my opponent played natural order for progenitus, even though it was in his hand.... though he could have had more than one  progen, still I hated myself for that.

I think It was at one of the ELD events. I'm playing Atog Lord. He's got TPS and Im playing Stax. He won game 1 and I have him locked out of game 2 at 2 life.
Me: Vamp tutor
Him: It resolves

LoL

I remember hearing about this from Shay. something along the lines of, "I had no way of winning the game except for him playing Vampiric Tutor."

I played against Tezzeret...

I had in play:
1 Viashimo Heretic, 1 Pithing Needle on Tezzeret, 1 Pithing Needle on Voltaic Key, Tormod's Crypt

He so havn't any option to win...

I thought, oh yes my wall is ok, so I can start beatdown with heretic. (he's at 11 life, so no DSC if I had untapped heretic)

He play echoing truth, lay down both combo pieces and go for the win... I missed t8 as 9th...

Ok as explainment, yes it was the alcohol and alot of weed during the day, and was totaly burnouted...

Nope.  While you're allowed to remind your opponent (Saito is famous for this), you don't have to and will not be penalized if you do not.

Okay, I've got a really good one.  My buddy Lotushead got me back into playing magic several years ago.  I thought my old school tech was really something (not!) and I was so thrilled that he was all tapped out (so no counter spells!) I dropped lotus, Taiga, and played Channell, Fireball for the win! He then patiently and nice as hell shows me this card in his hand called Force of Will...

Damn you LotusHead!  And thank you!  Very Happy

It was second game, I didn't really like playing against my grumpy opponent and I lost game 1. Basically, I stopped thinking when I lost the first game. First turn I Brainstorm with a Tinker, DSC, Mox, Land, and some other stuff. Neither of the cards I put back was DSC. I throw away the opportunity to have a 2nd turn DSC, and he didn't counter the Tinker when I used it. I won the game anyway, but lost game 3.

In about half of the Tezzeret matches I've played, I had the opportunity to attack and kill the plainswalker, but failed to do so.  I keep forgetting that planeswalkers are people, too.

1st Game he key + vault me force, he force... he wins

then

He 1st Turn: Mox, mox, anc, lotus, will, lotus, anc, time vault + key...wasnt able to go invinite.
Me: *think* ''hmmm i hope my Plan works'' Mox, mox, reef, tinker for Possessed Portal.

Then we both ''hmm ah oh hmm...'' He discaded the one card, as i did in my Turn...then he started to think several Minutes and skipped his turn, the i discarded through Possessed Portal, he tapped Time Vault for an extra Turn and entapped to pass me invinite Turns sitting there with my Portal....

Me:''Noticed that was a bad Plan...''

Later in touranment 2x 2nd Round Kill through Worker Staff, 2x 1st turn Oath and a token on my side and so on the whole Tournament...

Man i was pissed q;

So wait...Portal in play.

He would start his turn, skips it to untap vault and passes back to you.
Your turn.  He must tap Vault at EOT to skip his next turn.
He either a) starts a turn with Vault tapped and skips it but must take his 'normal' turn anyways.  Or b) must play his turn and be affected by Portal.

Either way, he has to take a turn and cannot give you infi turns. Also, Portal affects *both* players at the end of each turn.  Giving you infi turns still rapes his board.

Unless there were some mulligans here, he should win just by taking infinite turns.  He has 6 cards in hand (he played 7 cards and drew 6 cards) plus 2 Moxes and Vault/Key in play.  He needs 1 mana to keep his combo going, so he can go 7 turns before he has to bust it up.  You played 4 cards, giving you 3 left, and have one Mox and a land in play in addition to the Portal itself.  You can go 5 turns before you are forced to sacrifice the Portal to its own ability.  At that point he just goes right on taking turns while you have no permanents and no cards in hand, winning easily.  So although AmbivalentDuck is correct, you do still lose there.

I'm playing TPS at a tournament, a deck I borrowed. I'm playing vs. Stax and am
staring at a Trinisphere with 3 mana available but needing 4 to wriggle out.
I take my time looking at Trinisphere disgusted. I play Demonic for Lotus, cast it, my opponent
looks at me with disbelief as I pay the 3 mana, only to try and cast a Ritual immeadiately by cracking the Lotus.
In my defence, Stax scared the hell out of me back then.

EDIT: I already cast the Demonic and was looking my library for a long time, then I kinda forgot about Trinisphere

This was a casual game but, my opponent has no cards in hand and I forget that I can sac my kobolds to phyrexian altar to play y.will from my hand and generate enough storm playing the kobolds out of my graveyard to play either tendrils or grapeshot. How can I forget about Y. will? I almost cried and I felt like less of a man for a while after that.

T2 Regionals...
My opponent has a Chinese-text Mark of Asylum (which prevents noncombat damage to creatures) and 3 Spectral Procession 1/1 tokens in play. I am at 5.
My hand: Wrath, Wrath, Cryptic Command, Volcanic Fallout.
I have 6 mana.
He says, "Wrath?"
I pass the turn, don't tap his team, and cast Volcanic Fallout.

Extended T4...
U/W/g Tron (Me) vs. Goblins
He's swinging with three Piledrivers for lethal next turn.
Him: "Swing?"
Me: "Echoing Truth."
Him: "You sure?"
Me: "Like hell I am! JUDGE!"
The judge gives me a warning and a personal note for silliness.

Vintage game before M10 Rules...
Him: {G}{W}{U} Fish w/Tinker vs. Remora Tezz (Me)
I'm at 3 or 4 life with only a Drain and Force of Will in hand.
Me: Mana Drain your hard-cast Colossus.
Him: Okay.
Me: Put my own Colossus second with Top, fearing a Predict.
Him: Predict naming FoW.
Me: To myself, "Man, what a scrub!" FoW.
Him: Oxidize Top.
Me: Put Top on my library in response.
Him: K.
Me: Die to mana burn.

I'm not the only guilty one, however.

Legacy tourney...
Thriller ({G}{W}{B} Zombies) vs.  {W}{U} Death and Taxes (Me)
He's on the play and mulls to 5.
Him turn 1: Swamp, Dark Rit, Dark Rit, Dark Rit, Sinkhole, long pause, concede.

Vintage Top 8...
Oath (him) vs. Ichorid (me) in Game 3...
T1a: Crop into Bazaar. I have only drawn one creature and it's an Ichorid, so I discard 3 Therapies.
T1b: He drops Oath, giving me a token with Orchard.
T2a: I load my graveyard and Therapy his hate away.
T2b: He plays another Orchard and passes.
T3a: I use his token to Therapy a Hypnotist into my graveyard.
T3b: He plays a third Orchard, Propaganda, pass.
T4a: I dredge, Dread Return on Hypnotist and blow his 4-card hand out. He discards Force, Force, Drain, and a Time Walk.
T4a Part II: He says the F word.

Vintage tourney...
Me: Crucible in play and Strip Mine in the bin.
Him: Tormod's Crypt in play.
Me: Play Strip Mine.
Him: "Hell, no! Tormod's Crypt powers, activate!"
Me: "Form of: Suck!"

bubble round for top 8, game three. I'm on TPS, he's on R/G aggro. I know he plays both chalice and null rod.
My hand:
lotus petal, dark ritual, cabal ritual, imperial seal, delta, fow, rebuild. I keep, on the play. I delta for a basic swamp, and cast imperial seal for thrashing wumpus. Aside from goyf, no creature in his deck can handle that card. Since I have a fow in hand for the goyf, wumpus should win me this game.

Secure in that thought, I pass the turn, and immediately my heart sinks.

Forgot to play the petal. He drops chalice at zero, with pyroblast for my fow. I die to an elvish spirit guide, never drawing out of the scenario.
