ANNOUNCEMENT: MEANDECK OPEN – VINTAGE TOURNAMENT
Sunday, May 17, 2009 – Columbus, Ohio

Weeeeeeeee're Back!

The Vintage Meandeck Open returns to Columbus in May!   We know you've been hankering for some Vintage action.   Look no further!   Team Meandeck is proud to host another awesome Vintage tournament.   If you are a Vintage regular or looking to hone your Vintage skills, you have come to the right place!  It's a fun, friendly, but competitive atmosphere, and a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon on break from the family or the grind.

WHAT: VINTAGE! Tournament

Swiss + Top 8.

Entry is $20

We are raising our entry fee from $15 to $20 for several reasons.   The store owner will put a larger percentage of the entry into the prize pool, AND we want to extend our prize pool to the entire top 8.   We think these two great advantages are worth the downside of having to pay $5 more.

PRIZES:

CASH!!!
1st Place: 40% of Prize Pool
2nd Place: 20% of Prize Pool
3rd Place: 10% of Prize Pool
4th Place: 10% of Prize Pool
5th-8th: 5% of prize pool each

However, if there is just a cut to top 4, prize distribution as follows:
1st Place: 50%
2nd Place: 25%
3rd and 4th Place: 12.5%

Prize Pool will be 80% of entry fees!

Minimum $250 guaranteed!

Also door prizes will be awarded throughout the tournament! If you have suggestions or requests, PM me with that information and we’ll see what we can do!

PROXIES: A maximum of 5 proxies will be allowed.  However, up to ten additional proxies will be allowed for $1 per proxy.  Please note that this is a change from our previous policy of unlimited proxies.   Please note that we realize this is a sudden change and if, for this tournament, there are enough people who can't play with this constraint, we can change it to 10 proxy maximum but allow people to purchase 5 additional proxies for $1 per proxy.   Please post your views!   All additional monies generated by additional proxies will go directly into the prize pool.

*** NOTE *** Collector's Edition and International Edition cards will be LEGAL for this tournament

This is a pilot program.   If you intend on running CE or IE cards, you MUST:

1) use completely opaque sleeves, AND
2) Double Sleeve your card OR use a looser fitting sleeves where the cut of the corner of the card is not visible.  Otherwise, you must replace your sleeves before the top 8.

Because this is a pilot program, we HIGHLY encourage you to play with CE and IE cards.   Play dual lands, Time Vault, power, whatever it is you want to use!   This is one reason we are decreasing the number of proxies permitted.

WHEN: Sunday, May 17, 2009

The store opens at 11:30 AM. Registration starts at 12:30. Registration will close and the tournament begins at 1PM sharp.

WHERE:

The Soldiery
4256 N. High St.
Columbus, Ohio 43214

ALSO!

Yes, Alara Reborn WILL be legal for this tournament!

This tournament will  count towards the Mana Drain's Vintage Player Rankings (http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=37688.0 ) (so long as we get 17 or more players).   If you want to accumulate points towards that system for cool end-of-year prizes, come down and pick up some points!

These tournaments are for YOU. We want to make them as fun as we possibly can. That means that we want your feedback on how we can make them better.

Finally, some of you went to Thurmans afterward and enjoyed the amazingness that is Thurmans (those of who went should report!)

Put the address in your GPS so you can get there after the tournament!

http://www.thethurmancafe.com/

Don't miss on eating this:

Do not miss this! Bring your friends, bring your cousins, bring your siblings! We proved the skeptics wrong! If you are a Midwesterner, don't miss this event!

Hope you can make it!

Stephen Menendian

The store I play at weekly has always allowed CE and IE cards.  There is generally no issues as long as sleeving is done well.  Good to see someone else trying it.

I've got to salute you guys for trying out new ways to organise vintage tournaments. And combined with the pic of that incredible burger, I can only say god bless the US of A and all that sail in her. Smile

Have fun you lucky buggers!

For reference:

I recommend that anyone not too far from Ohio make the drive.  These tournaments (and the post-tourney feasting) are always an awesome time.

Good luck!

Could you elaborate?

Sure, dark coloured sleeves and preferably thicker ones (ie: the rough textured ultrapros, forgive me for not remembering the model type) seem to work fine on their own without resorting to double sleeving.  Lighter coloured and thinner sleeves to make the gold border and square corners noticable, white and pink seem to be the worst offenders as well as illustrated sleeves.  We get many players using CE and IE for the fact that we only allow 5 free proxy and 5 more at $.50 a piece.  It also seems to ease the transition for new, younger players into our weekly tourny.  The store owner has always felt that if Wotc prints it, you should be able to play with it.

I have found that if you are using non-normal cards, the Black UltraPro's that are classified as "Solid" brand are the best for covering up card blemishses.

There is no such thing as immunity in Sandwich Punch.

That's correct.  A Thurman Burger that is immune to Sandwich Punch is a Thurman Burger that is guarded in accordance with the rules of sandwich punch.  If anyone has any questions about this, ask JR Goldmanbergstein about it.

A toothpick stuck in the sandwich is not a guard because it is in the sandwich and not on the sandwich.  It is, however, a deterrant.

It is only a deterrant to the weak and feeble.

Twaun speaks the truth. I would give my life for an epic sandwich punch. OK, that's a lie, but I could probably gut out a toothpick wound for one.

I'm employed, so I think I'm in there.

In the interest of creating a culture of borrowing power that used to exist when I and others used to own a bunch of power, I have CE power people can borrow.

I would much prefer the base 10 proxies to the base 5, for what it's worth. I'm actually strongly in favor of moving away from the infinite proxies as an experiment, but with the base 5 system I feel like I'm in one of two situations:

1) Pigeonholed into playing something subpar or something narrow and linear.

2) Stuck paying $10 more entry than most people just to play competitively.

Anyway, it's not really a big deal, and I'm planning on coming out in any event. Just stating my personal opinion.

Looks like it'll be a blast!

The person who was going to come up with me for the event bailed out on me today. So with me just travailing by myself I don't see any way I can afford it.

6 days!

Questions to think about:

1) Will Twuan eat lead at the return of Matt Hazard?

2) Will Paul Mastriano 3peat and continue his streak of tournament victories?

3) Will Dave Daugherty finish a Thurman Burger?

4) Will Jerry Yang play a jank sideboard for a deck he threw together the morning of the event?

5) Does anyone need to borrow some CE power from me?

6) Will I ever be able to Finish a Thurman Burger without having gastrointestinal surgery?

7) Will I sandwich punch Mark Trogdon?

All these questions... and more will be answered this weekend!

I sure hope so!  Mark Trogdon (like Jerry Yang) is NOT in on Sandwich Punch.  You would owe him a new sandwich and an apology.

Not much chance of that, since I usually get the Bacon Cheeseburger. (Which is still insanely huge)

This is gonna be a blast, and I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone again!
