Great idea scanning all the decklists; it must save a lot of time. Unfortunately, some of them are quite hard to read. Not sure if between your scanner and the host site there would be some way to fix that?

Also, Top 16 decklists at a 17 man tournament. Sucks to be "that guy." Razz

Did I read that right? Did your [significant other] or daughter play and place 17th?

That would also make it "That Girl"

Really great idea to scan in decklists. I would love to see this implemented in other TO reports.

Unfortunately, some of them are quite hard to read. Not sure if between your scanner and the host site there would be some way to fix that?

Zooming in using the button there fixed this for me. Though if you're complaining about legibility, I can't help you there. Wink

pretty much hate the scanning decklists idea. it might be a bit less work for the person doing it, but they're damn near impossible to read. The only 2 cards I can make out in Jeff Carpenters list are Forbidden Orchard and Xantid Swarm

I will speak up because it was my encouragement that got Dan to post scans at all.  It is a service to the community to do anything with the decklists.  Transcribing the lists is a time consuming and too often thankless job that I'm not surprised he didn't want to continue doing.  If you weren't saying 'thank you' previously I don't see how you can complain now.

The previous results thread (seen here: http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=38041.0) didn't have any top 8 decklists posted (except Jeff's and Rich's), so I talked to Dan and he agreed to post scans this time.

The scans really aren't that hard to read, except maybe the Goblins list... but it's Goblins, and Jeff's list, which is really more a piece of art.  Are you really looking for secret tech in a Five Color Lich's Mirror deck with Deja Vu in the sideboard?  I usually don't start with decks whose name include the phrase 'peer pressure'.

Vintage is a lovely format, it's too bad so few people can play because the supply of power is so small.

Chess really changed when they decided to stop making Queens and Bishops.  I'm just glad I got my copies before the prices went crazy.

On a side note to this, imagine being a judge and having to sit through this. Scanning the lists serves the additional purpose of showing people the importance of writing lists neatly, or better yet, typing them out before hand.

Also, Jer: How did that singleton Enlightened Eggplant work out in your sideboard. :p

Well, the fact that it had 58 cards was kinda techy.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback on the scanned lists. This system is remarkably easier to implement, for many of the reasons pointed out by posters here. The zoomed versions in the photo album are actual size, so you're looking at what we're looking at in person, as far as legibility. We certainly encourage everyone to print out their lists and/or write them more neatly to allow for better flow of information. Using this system will allow us to continue to post decklists, and will allow us to post more than just the Top 8.

Well, the fact that it had 58 cards was kinda techy.

The missing cards were Brainstorm and Ponder - which I actaully told Dan were missing from the list about 15 seconds after I handed it in.

Its actually very odd how I ended up playing that deck in the first place.  I was only going to play Mirror Combo if there were 16 players or less, and there were 17.  Everyone wanted to see me play mirror combo - and Scott said he would drop from the event to force me to play it.  So I decided to play it.  I had to scratch it down quickly.  I had Ray count my list and he told me I was missing 2 cards.  I realized they were brainstorm and ponder - but in the commotion of changing sleaves, and taking cards out of my real deck - I forgot to write them in.  Before pairings went up, I told Dan that I was missing those two cards on my list and that I needed to write them in... but then things started and what not.

Anyway, the deck did horribly. And it was by all accounts - awful.   On top of that I didn't play against ONE control player so my Xantid Swarm tech got boarded out EVERY GAME!  /sadface.

Also for the record, I had a completely built and clearly written deck list for staxless stax that I was going to play up until 15 mins before decks were due.  Thus the Peer Pressure list.
Oh and BTW Deja vu is sweet tech - considering if Channel doesn't resolve, you basically scoop if you can't get it outa the yard.  Recoup is when I don't have lots of mana, and Deja vu was for when I have plenty of mana.  Smile

Thanks for the clarification, Jeff. I jotted the note about Brainstorm and Ponder into the spreadsheet for the event, but did not update them on the physical list, so that clears up that mystery.

I see the fact that it saves time for the tournament organizer. Being one myself I know the amount of work this produces.
However, this way the lists cannot be uploaded into morphling or other top 8 list databases, making statistics impossible. It is also harder to get a quick overview of the lists since you need to click through all of the pictures and to read handwritten lists.

Maybe there is some way to find a person who is willing to type up the lists next time.

That's one of the nice things about this system. It gets more information from the event out there faster, and allows diligent souls to type up the lists if they're so inclined.

+1

I agree with you on all your points, so far, Dan. Also, I had no problems reading any of the lists. I think the fact that you're out there running tournaments should be enough. You shouldn't have to do things someone else's way, just because there happens to be a website out there that copy/pastes deck lists. Yes I've used the site before, way back when even. So I know it's a great resource. I think morphling has enough followers, if enough people care that much, that someone can type it themselves. It should never be required of a TO to list deck list in a specific manner. I, for one, think the fact that he posts the deck lists is a service to us all already, and that we should be grateful he posts them in whichever manner is at his convenience.

Any luck with your Gencon stuff, Dan?

Thanks for the feedback. We're still awaiting word back from security and police in Indianapolis about the theft, but we've filed all the necessary reports and done all we can at this point. If anyone would like details, please feel free to contact me via PM.

Agree.

So I shout to the vintage community and ask, is there someone willing to type up the decklists so they can be uploaded into morphling?

I think it would be easiest if evryone who plays vintage is forced to have an account here and then type their own lists in the appropriate tournament blog.  Scanning was a grrat idea but of course for those who learned to write with their thumbs makes it incredibly hard to read.  I was wondering how often events are run at your store and if anyone wants to play from the DC area willing to carpool 7 hours or so...  That is where i will be living hopefully in the next few months.. Out of the country currently with the US Army and cant wait to get back into a group of crazy Magic players.  *Jeremiah
