Been alot of local interest in the event.  Had many regulars who don't play Type one start getting cards for this event, and I know of at least 3 different teams coming to both days of Eternal Weekend.  Should be a highly competitive but fun weekend.

Will do side events, haven't figured out exactly what yet.

Running vintage again means alot to me.  It's been a long time since I've done one.

Type One: Too Long!
Me: Quiet You!

:p

Well that's really all I have for now.  Have alot of events upcoming, updated them in my sig.

Thanks as always for the support.

Took a while to cook up, but I have some side events that I believe are worthy of being part of Eternal Weekend.

Sat Side Events: 8 person single elim vintage all day for $5!  Winner receives dual land + matching fetchland.
If 40 or more players enter the main event, the first side event will be free =D

Sun Side Events: 8 person single elim legacy all day for $5!  Winner receives dual land + matching fetchland.
If 40 or more players enter the main event, the first side event will be free =D

If free side events either day go off, they will be for the first 8 people who dropped from the main event.
Any $5 side events will be open to all, it's just that first free one on each day that is saved for people who played in the main event.

I have some clumps of various Duals/Fetches just sitting around and figured this would be a good way to distribute them.

Ebay: Sell them on me!
Me: I'd rather give them out!
Ebay: Bah!

I am hugely looking forward to this.  I appreciate all the interest and hope to see you on the 23rd and 24th.

Some old friends stopped by the store to tell me they were coming for Vintage.  We talked alot about the good old days.  <3

It made me realize how much I miss Vintage in New England.  I've put alot of time into this event and have prizes lined up and ready to go.  Unsure how many side events will go off, but I have plenty of dual + fetchland packages lined up.

Here is one of them Wink

I've also already secured prizes for future vintage events.  Obviously running future ones depends on the player support for this one, but I believe this will be a strong turnout as many different players have already come into the store in anticipation for this.  Yay  Very Happy

The next month is basically a whirlwind for me as far as events go, but I've put the bulk of my time into preparing for Eternal Weekend.

Thanks again for following along with the updates and see you Saturday.

Think it's a bad choice and in bad taste to run an event the same day as the NYSE Black Lotus event. 3 hrs drive time is not that big of a deal.

Think it's a bad choice and in bad taste to run an event the same day as the NYSE Black Lotus event. 3 hrs drive time is not that big of a deal.

If it's in bad taste to run an event the same day as another event, then every single TO on the planet has bad taste.

There are Magic events running every weekend of the year simultaneously.

I'm not major competition for Prospero's event.  We're extremely far away from each other.  There's another store under 30 minutes away from NYSE over in Vestal.  He's running Eternal the same day.  He's direct competition with NYSE, but no one seems to give him any guff.

I'm a good 4 hours away.  I have alot of respect for both Nick's (Coss/Detweiler), but they aren't the only ones with tourneys to run.  Both events will have strong turnouts, because there's not really any crossover trasffic between our events.

I've gone head-to-head with Upstate NY before... never affects turnouts for either one of us.  People just like to make a big deal out of it even though we're hundreds of miles apart.

If you don't agree with me running my tournaments on a certain date that's fine, but don't preach to me that I'm making bad choices just because you don't like me running an event 3 States apart from a friend of yours.  I've been doing this for a long time.  Anyone who knows me is aware that I'm very respectful of other TO's.  This is a hard business to make a living in and I understand there's only so many Saturday's in the year to run events.

My last Eternal event was about a month ago and was scheduled 2 months out, but 3 weeks before the event someone else scheduled a similar event 45 minutes away.  I said nothing to him even though his event clearly affected both our turnouts.  That person was local, but I still respect his decision to run a tournament on whatever date he wants.

Please respect my decision to run tournaments.  Your thinly-veiled advertising for another event with '3 hour drive isn't that bad!' just comes off as petty.

NYSE is going to do very well.  I should also be fine.  The end.

I don't really want to involve myself in another TO dispute, but nevertheless I want to say from the perspective of a player in the New England region that the drive time to NYSE made their event a non-option for me this weekend.  I, and many others in my area (Mass/NH/RI) have never driven to New York City for one of their events.

I can't speak for the others, but for me, the logistical problems involved with traveling that distance are overwhelming.  The drive time from my town to Selden, NY (not from my house to the venue, which would be even longer) is 5 hours according to mapquest, and that's not accounting for traffic.  That would mean leaving my house at 7:00 AM, and probably not getting home until 2:00 A.M. the next day or later.

This isn't a matter of two TO's running overlapping events in the same state.  In fact, if you get down to brass tacks, I'd be shocked if more than 6 attendees at this weekend's DHG had ever gone to an N.Y.S.E. event before, or vice versa.  The geographical divide is bigger than it's made out to be, traveling costs are more than what they used to be, and people seem to have less time to invest in traveling to play Magic these days.

Selden, which is on Long Island, is about 4 hours away from Vestal, which is near Binghamton.  New York state is a big place. In fact if you are willing to take the ferry over long island sound, your tournament is actually closer to the NYSE tournament then the Vestal Legacy is.

That said I don't think it is that big of a deal that the events are on the same day, it should be avoided if possible but I realize that it can be difficult to schedule around PTQs, prereleases etc.  I do however think that new england players (especially those closer to CT) should consider the NYSE events an option. I know that many long island players, myself included made trips up to MA for ELD events/Traviscon events and others, and it is good for everyone when we can attract lots of players: it grows the community and creates some friendly regional competition. There is a real camaraderie that exists between the NY and Philadelphia players as a result of our mutual efforts to attend each other's events, and I would like to have that extended to New England players as well.

My bad.  I did a mapquest search way back between Vestal/Selden and it said half an hour.  I must've typed something in wrong because the actual location between both stores is about 4 hours, close to the same distance my store is from Upper NY.  Just a little frustrating because Selden/Vestal are both Upstate NY and I'm multiple States away, yet people 4-5 hours away always seem to pop in my threads and give me guff.  I hate guff :p

I don't know if people feel threatened or whatnot, but I'm not at war with anyone.  As already stated by numerous replies, our bases clearly don't conflict with each other.  It's a handful at best.  I have a business to run, just like you guys.  I am going to run my tourneys, which are key to my business.

Obviously, I don't want to run head-to-head with any events... but it's not realistic.  There's events going on everyday all over the world and I have to pick dates that make sense.  I try to stay away from local tournaments and when I can tournaments that extend outside of that.  Ideally I'd like to never have to run against a tournament on the Northeast, but it can't always work out that way.

I guess I could've had no Eternal Weekend, but I really wanted to run this.  New England deserves quality Vintage and I think I can help in providing it.

Again to those who are offended by the date choice for my event, I'm sorry but it's the only date I could pick (check my sig).  Same thing I told both Nick's privately, in the future I'll try not to schedule head to head with anything they run.

Thanks as always for the support and er, criticism.  :p

To those who are coming to my events, see you this weekend  Very Happy

I'm absolutely not accusing you of anything.  We should all have the same goals: growing the format and getting people playing vintage is good for players, good for TO's good for stores, good for everyone.  I understand the difficulty of scheduling tournaments.  As a player, I know I would be willing to go to one of your tournaments, even though im pretty far away. Its not about laying claim to territory, its about giving vintage players more opportunities to go out and play and about the fun of competing with players from different areas.  I will reiterate how much the friendly rivalry between the NY and Philly players has driven an increase in attendance to both the blue bell/Philly open and NYSE events.  That's the kind of thing that's going to drive people to travel long distances to your event, and as a TO its in your best interest to foster that.  Saying that "oh its only a few players that would go to both events" is short sighted, If people are excited enough about playing vintage they will be willing to travel further, both to your events and to NYSE ones.

I'd also like to point out that Dave is a Wizards Premium store owner, so he not only has obligations to hold Pre-Releases and Launch Parties and whatnot, but also has players interesting in participating in Standard, Extended, and Limited events. Heck, I think he even runs Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh tourneys, so his options for dates are very constrained. To my knowledge the majority of TO's nowadays are player/dealers, as most of the store owner TO's (for Vintage anyway) have left the scene. Each of those groups face different obstacles when running events, and one of those that is unique for store owners is finding the time for all their different player groups.

Speaking for myself only, NYSE was never considered an option, even before this tourney was announced.

I'm really looking forward to this event.

Glad to see you giving vintage events a shot down at DHG. With a prize structure like that I'm not surprised by the amount of buzz this tourney seems to be generating.

Unfortunately my work schedule sucks and I will not be able to attend what I am sure will be a kick ass tourney.  Sad

Best of luck to all attendees.

I want to say right off the bat that Dave and I already spoke about this, and that it's a non-issue for me now.

I do think that the end game involves players making the trip to bigger events.  Nick Coss had 68 for his Lotus tournament in Edison and 64 for the first Blue Bell Game Day.  Having bigger events is, at some level, a self fulfilling prophecy.  I think your draw power will increase as players know that you're going to have better and better turnouts (and thus, better and better prize support.)

I know that the drive from Massachusetts is considerable, as Max alluded, I've done it before.  Still, I think that the drive is more than manageable for Connecticut players.  I went to Travis's final event and my drive time, from Long Island, was 2.5 hours.  Mapquest was horribly wrong, but even then - if you knew that there was going to be a Lotus tournament with upscaling prize support and at least 60 players, would you make the trip if it was 3 hours?  I would, and have.

I did not expect to draw players from Massachusetts, but I'd be lying if I said that I didn't hope for some of the Connecticut guys.

Max, Mike Smith, thank you both for your support, but Dave and I are going to work, in the future, to ensure that our events don't conflict.

As T/O's, the only way for us to grow the community, and further the format, is to avoid this kind of competition.  Dave handled this all admirably.

I appreciate the kind words and your professionalism.  I still maintain it's not direct competition, but I will try to work with you guys best I can.  Just remember I am a store owner, and I have lots of other events I have to run where you guys can just coordinate with each other and as long as you're not head-to-head with a local ptq, you're golden.

I don't have that luxury, as Farias already pointed out.  I fit in Eternal events where and when I can without stepping on toes if possible.

If I have another event that falls the same day an NYSE, or a Blue Bell, or anything else either of you run, just please understand it's because I didn't actually have another date to do it on.

With that said, I sent you a PM about my next event.

As for today, I need to sleep because my event is in 4 hours :p

For those coming today, I look forward to seeing all of you (even Carebear :p).

Should be fun.

41 people here.  Very happy with the turnout.  As I type this we're in round 5.  Going in notables still alive are ELD at 3-1, Demonic Attorney at 3-1, Steve Houlette and Josh Cutler both drew at 3-0.  Brassman won my first side event (free Smile for taiga/wooded foothills.  There are people battling right now for Misty Rainforest/Trop Island and Scalding Tarns and Volc Island in the side events.

Really appreciate the support.  As I announced on-site (to shock and awe :p), I will be doing a $10 Mox Sapphire tournament on March 13th.

Vintage is back in New England thanks to you guys.

More updates to come <3

Excellent tournament.  The judge staff had some difficult questions to handle, and they did so admirably.  I split with Steve Houdlette, Bill Copes and John Longo in the Top 4.  My only loss on the day was a 3 game battle with Steve.  I said it when this event was announced, and I'll say it again, those prizes were insane.  Dave, you are a madman.  Thanks you for a great event.

Thank you and congratulations on top 4.  I had more fun in this tournament than any Vintage I've ever been involved in over the years... and that's alot of Vintage :p

I hope everyone had a good time.  My sense is they did.  Had some difficulties here and there with various small stuff but worked through it.  I have not slept in 2 days... and am currently drafting right now.

Many of you apparently rented a hotel room and are coming back tomorrow.  This warms my heart. <3

I will have a full report with pics at some time later in the week.  I'd like to think this tournament was an indication that New England Vintage is still alive and well in New England.

Really, I had a blast.  I really, really, really, had a blast.

Hopefully there is another strong turnout tomorrow, but if not I don't care because today was really a great day on many levels.

I said earlier in a cheesy post that I wanted to write a love letter to vintage, and with everyone's help today I think that was accomplished.

Thank you all for coming.  Really, I can't thank you enough.  If I don't see some of you tomorrow for legacy, hopefully see you on March 13th for my $10 Sapphire tourney.

Thanks, Dave!  Congrats again for doing so well with the store and for rousing enough interest in vintage to get 40+ people.  You ran the event exceptionally, in true Kird Ape fashion. . . +1/+2 for you, sir.  Well done.

Also, the obligatory TO DAVE FEINSTEIN!!!EXCLAMATIONPOINT!!

I'm the only other legal target, so I draw 6 cards, and he literally quits Magic.

Terrorists searching in vain for these powerful weapons have the saying "Bill Copes spitteth, and he taketh away."
