THE PHILLY OPEN 5

Yes, it's that time again!  Saturday, Febuary 27th magic players will gather in Philadelphia to sling cards, have fun, and compete for some great prizes.  The PA Convention Center got back to me, and once again the Philly Open will be next to the Reading Terminal Market!  For those of you not in the know, the Reading Terminal Market is the "Stone Blade" aka AWESOME (to be measured in the number of wolf shirts it would take to compete with it's level of awesomeness).  This time instead of Type 2 I will be holding a large Extended tournament.  Just wait until you see the prizes for this one.

The Who/What/Where/When/Why

Who: Hosted by myself, Nick Coss!
What: a great day of playing Magic: the Gathering
Where: PA Convention Center (click here for directions)
When: Saturday, Febuary 27th.  Doors open at 9:00 am
Why: Because there aren't enough awesome independent tournaments out there.

Vintage Event

Registration starts at 11:00 AM, tournament starts promptly at 12:30 PM.
Entry Fee: $30.00
Format: Vintage!
REL: Competitive
Sanctioning: Unsanctioned, with 10 proxies allowed.
Decklists will be required (and not withheld – you play it, I publish it)

THE PRIZES
1st Place: Unlimited Black Lotus
2nd Place: Mox Ruby
3rd - 4th Place: Signed, Altered English Mana Drain + $100 credit at my table.
5th - 8th Place: $60 credit at my table, plenty of pimp vintage cards to choose from as well as staples.
9th - 16th Place: $30 credit at my table.
17th Place: 1 Wolf Shirt, to assist in your future Vintage endeavors.

Lowest ranked player at the end of the swiss: 1 Wolf Shirt, to really assist you in your future Vintage endeavors.

The highest placing player with no proxies will win something pimp and awesome!

Round 1 Byes: Anyone who wins a Blue Bell or one of the NYSE Vintage events is entitled to a free Round 1 Bye at the following Philly Open!
Winner of the 1/2 Blue Bell tournament (64 players): Max Brown
Winner of the 1/23 NYSE Lotus Tournament: ???

Player of the Year Points:
Players in the Vintage event will be earning points towards the Player of the Year.  The Player of the Year gets to play for free for the following year!

Extended Event

Registration starts at 10:00 AM, tournament starts promptly at 11:00 AM.
Entry Fee: $25.00
Format: Extended
Rules Enforcement Level: Competitive
K-Value: 32k
Decklists will be required.

THE PRIZES
1st Place: 1st pick out of prize pool + 1 Booster Box of Worldwake
2nd Place: 2nd pick out of prize pool + ½ Booster Box of Worldwake
3rd - 4th Place: 3rd and 4th pick out of prize pool (based on swiss standings) + ¼ Booster Box of Worldwake
5th - 8th Place: 5th - 8th pick out of prize pool (based on swiss standings)
9th - 16th Place: ½ Booster Box of Worldwake

THE PRIZE POOL – That's right, FOIL PLAYSETS OF THE FOLLOWING!
4x FOIL Misty Rainforest
4x FOIL Scalding Tarn
4x FOIL Arid Mesa
4x FOIL Verdant Catacombs
4x FOIL Marsh Flats
4x FOIL Tarmogoyf
4x FOIL Maelstrom Pulse
4x FOIL Dark Confidant

SIDE EVENTS

Booster Drafts: $15 entry fee, single elimination, 8-4-2-2 pack payout.  Sign-ups will be running all day starting at 10:00 AM.

8-Man Constructed for a Booster Box.  $15 entry fee, single elimination, I will run single elimination 8-mans for any format that people want to play all day, just sign up!  Prize is either $100 in credit at my table or a Booster Box!

EDH tournament:
Start time: 4:00 PM
Entry Fee: $10
Tournament Format: Players will be divided into pods/tables, with the winner advancing to a final table.  Every dollar collected will go towards prize, with the following breakdown being given in credit at my table. 1st place: 50%, 2nd place: 25%, 3rd + 4th place: 12.5%.  Everyone who makes the final table will receive a prize!  Percentages will be adjusted based on the number of players in the final table.

CE Rotisserie Draft tournament:
Start time: 3:00 PM
Entry Fee: $30
This tournament is limited to the first eight people who sign up and pay on-site.  I won't be accepting preregistrations because of the potential for fifty no-shows.  This is ridiculously fun and everyone who participated had a blast the last time I ran this and it was the talk of the local community.  I own a CE set that people will draft from.  The way a Rotisserie Draft works is I lay out the entire set (minus basic land) and people draft from it, face up.  Picks wheel, with 8th pick getting 9th pick, and 1st getting 16th and so on (just like fantasy sports).  After the tournament all of the cards need to be returned.  Sorry, I just can't afford to give out a $800 set of cards in addition (unless it turns into a $100 per person event, with no additional prizes, just a thought).

Prize:
1st: $160 in credit at my table.
2nd: $80 in credit at my table.

Dealers: I will be set up as a dealer at the show.  I will be buying, selling, and trading cards all day long.  Please respect the fact that this is what makes it worthwhile for me to spend weeks of my time and thousands of dollars out of my pocket preparing and running the Philly Opens.  While trading cards with other players is always fine, please leave the buying and selling to me.

DAY 2 VINTAGE TOURNAMENT

Alternate Universes has agreed to host a second day of Vintage!
Where: Alternate Universes in HOLMES, PA (visit www.alternateu.com for directions)
When: Store opens at 10 AM, Tournament starts at 11:00 AM.
Entry Fee: $25
K-Value: Unsanctioned, with 10 proxies allowed.
Players will earn points towards competing for the Player of the Year award!

Prize:
1st Place: UL Mox Sapphire
2nd - 8th Place: 100% of the remaining entry fees will be given out as credit, so it depends on the number of players.

I hope to see everyone come out and have fun.  If you have any questions, please PM me, email me at NickCoss@yahoo.com for more information.

I'll be there.

Dates in February look like they're going to be packed. Philly Open V at the end of the month, is there going to be a Blue Bell at the beginning of the month?  If so, the only open weekend for NYSE VI would be the 9th.  I hope there's no local PTQ.

If the PA Convention Center has room, we'll be there.  If not, we'll be up in Edison again.

Any word on which location?

Corporate Jet is fueled up and good to go....

I'm officially calling out eveybody to come and face me (especially some Meandeckers I've been wanting to face)... now is your shot at beating a Dutch player... as I'm attending this event 99.9% for sure (Boss only needs to Ok the time off but that's just paperwork). I'll be spending 6 days in NYC and 1 in Philly.

Oh snap!

Nick, we need a team event.  A real team event.  I would want nothing more than a team event in which I get to play with Marius and another R&D'er next to us.  Come on, make it happen!

@Nick,
Just bring enough Yankee gear for the loser to wear during the photo shoot.... Wink

I'm down for doing a team event, would be truly awesome, as I'm looking forward to meeting most of the NYC / Philly crowd for the first time.
