hello, I was wondering, as a rather new magic player that wants to reach to a pont playing vintage, what deck should i play that does not require p9 and still be competitive? I was thinking dark times deck. Do you have a better suggestion? ..and how could i replace the black lotus and mox jet, what would u replace them with (eg. chalice of the void for 0)?
thanks in advance for any responses

as I told you I am new player so yes no workshops no bazaars. I know it will be hard to compete, but i like the challenge. But i have cards like wastelands, strip mine, dark depths, (all type2 cards),force of will, stifle, tutors (except grim) and some duals. And i am willing to buy some more cards, but cant afford a p9.

Then Dark Times is a good choice or Noble Fish. Both decks can be played without power

In Noble Fish you could squeeze in some mana, more permission more Trygons, etc.
I never played Dark Times, but maybe a swamp and a emissary of despair or a gatekeeper of malakir, ..

RG Beats and Landstill could probably work without power. You could also play a variation of Sui Tendils.

I played a "t2" deck that only included 2 moxen, lotus, (green and blue) and Ancestral/Time Walk, which could be replaced with 5 extra bounce/counterspells/lotus petal.
I made 6th in a 25 man t1 tourney with it
From mine, but powered down, I would try this list:
Creatures: (18) 4 x Cold Eye Selkie 4 x Noble Hierarch 4 x Trygon Predator 4 x Veldaken Heretic 2 x Sower of temptation
Instants: (18) 4 x FoW 4 x Mana Leak 4 x Spell Pierce 1 x Brainstorm 1 x Fact or Fiction (maybe) 2-3 x Echoing Truth/Repulse (depending on your meta) 1 x Mystical Tutor 1 x Merchant scroll
Enchantments:(4) 4 x Favor of the Overbeing (this card was a huge surprise for people, and made all my creatures into beatsticks)
Lands 4 x trop 4 x Breeding pool 4 x Misty rainforest ? x basic lands or wastelands, also meta/your choice
SB appropriately, if lots of mud, claims and energy flux. Crypts and Relics for dredge. Pithing needle for Tezz/Vault More sowers, and Threads of Disloyalty for lots of fish. And if you expect Iona oath....plummet is a fun card. They always name blue for some reason.
Good luck hope it helps.

I would not play a deck without the Power Nine. Even in MUD with Null Rod's I still use a good bit of power so it's not like we're all not cheating. Hell, beside various Beatz decks wth Null Rod, there aren't many decks that are capable of playing without power that haven't already been mentioned 'in the thread.

tbh i didnt wanna play vintage at all, just because I had no power9 and many cards that cost>100$. What intrigued me though is a sanctioned event that the guys organizing it to attract more people will reward the first non powered deck also. It is also very challenging for me, I consider myself a better than average player, so I will give it a try. I seriously consider 4 chalice of the void (for 0), would u recommend that? (would it stop early win for powered decks)?
Again, thanks every1 for the replies.

I would play some TMWA variant, propably mono red since they are the most stable (and don't catch splash hate in the form of wastelands...).
Something with fast mana in ancient tomb & city of traitors + simmian spirit guide so you do have fast mana to power out fast blood moon's and manic vandal's
Some repetative artifact hate like mox monkey, viashino heretic and shattering spree.
And stuff to clear the way like jitte, burn, or some ping-ing critter
And you could use the open slots for utility like stingscourger, greater gargadon, tunnel ignus,... you name it.

If Dark Times and all the Fish decks posted here (small disruptive creatures) are not your bag, and you want to feel like you are playing a "Broken" deck sometimes, I recommend Elf Combo. The only expensive card in the deck is usually fetchlands (which you could sub out for Land Grant in a pinch) and Glimpse of Nature.
