Another 3 mana Planeswalker. Dark Ritual this out, discard fatty, animate turn 2. Looks great in a dark ritual Madness deck. Other than that. Meh.

I was really (really really) hoping for a walker that could -1 or -2 for Beseech the Queen. That would have been a natural limitation on tutoring too fast in other formats, without basically any drawback for Vintage: Beseech with 1 or 0 lands, find Ancestral Recall or Black Lotus... yes please. That said, she's actually pretty good. I would compare her simply to Diabolic/Chainer's/Cruel Edict, and recognize that she has upside over them, either by eventually killing two creatures, or garnering advantage through her other abilities. I could see her in Legacy Reanimator as a board-control/damage-soak/discard enabler, and potentially Vintage Reanimator as well. Against decks in Vintage that plan only to win with Blightsteel or an Oath-Creature she provides an answer that can be played preemptively, and she can buy time against Fish Decks, altough I admit she is less useful against Workshop Aggro and actively counterproductive against Dredge.

Vintage is a lovely format, it's too bad so few people can play because the supply of power is so small.
Chess really changed when they decided to stop making Queens and Bishops. I'm just glad I got my copies before the prices went crazy.

Another 3 mana Planeswalker. Dark Ritual this out, discard fatty, animate turn 2. I really like design of the card. She has potential to be a very powerful tool for a reanimation deck. I like that she is able to follow up a discarded reanimation target next turn by forcing a your opponent to sacrifice blocker. The sac effect takes away the weakness of exhume. Probably best suited for Legacy. For Vintage, I agree with DubDub that she does well against most tinker bots (except Battlesphere) and Oath. She is subtully powerful agains all Shops decks (except for welder varieties) as she will most likely be paried with Dark Ritual, thoughtsiezes, counters, and a draw engine. The discard will can hurt shops since they have little card draws, and can handle one or more of thier creatures. Good follow-up to a counterd 1st turn sphere effect to stabalize the board early on. She will need to be paired with a draw engine (Gush, Bob, Jace), but has the potential to fuel a Dark Ritual combo or control deck. I approve and look forward to testing since dark ritual needed some help.

Umm, because if your opponent is on the play and leads with: Tinker->Blightsteel you can instead go: Ritual->Liliana->Cruel Edict?

Umm, because if your opponent is on the play and leads with: Tinker->Blightsteel you can instead go: Ritual->Liliana->Cruel Edict? Meh, just pick a Fleshbag Marauder as your Entomb target and you'll be fine. Seriously though, it does make me wonder why people don't run Entomb/Reanimate in Vintage. I'd think it's viable in any environment where Oath is. It's potentially faster, certainly more reliable (never flip the wrong creature), and Iona is presumably just as devastating as ever. The splash damage from Leyline/Jailer shouldn't be much worse than say, the splash from Claim/Trygon hate. Maybe the ability to Oath repeatedly w/out reassembly? Shrug.

The poll at the bottom of Tom LaPille's article today asks: What color do you most enjoy playing with? White Blue Black Red Green So I answered... blue. But it got me thinking, and just saying blue doesn't even approximate my full feelings: Many people like blue, and many people hate blue, but it's not really (for most I'd think) about the color, but what the color does. People like drawing cards, people hate getting their cards countered. People like casting Jace the Mind Sculptor, but they hate getting beaten down by a single flying creature with shroud they have no way to answer. At the same time, people like casting Dark Confidant, and Lotus Cobra, and Tarmogoyf, and Stoneforge Mystic... but those are blue cards. Blue, epitomized by Brainstorm, is about having the right card at the right time, so a Blue shell is the best frame (generally speaking) to put the few powerful cards from other colors into. Countermagic is also about having the right card at the right time, because it is always the right card; instead of variously needing Smother or Nature's Claim, one can just play Force of Will, Mental Misstep, Mana Drain, Spell Pierce etc. and take all comers. The stack is where all spells are equal (Split Second, Storm, and 'Can't be countered' notwithstanding), and blue is broadly speaking the only color that has spells that target spells. So I answered blue, which will probably always be the case for me as I play Vintage, only home for the truly broken cards, but it would be nice to see if Wizards can design powerful cards in other colors that are resistant to being assimilated into the blue shell (whether it's 4x Preordain + 4x Mana Leak, or 4x Brainstorm + 4x Force of Will). It doesn't have to be explicitly anti-blue either, but favor the other colors: Tarmo-growf - Creature When you cast a non-green spell, sacrifice Tarmo-growf. Tarmo's / stats Or give the 'enemy color pairs' actual meaning: When you cast a blue or black spell, sacrifice Tarmo-growf. When you cast a white or blue spell, sacrifice Grim Lava-lover. Etc. And give interaction on the stack to the other colors!

Why don't you just get a Worldgorger Dragon and win the game? Because inconveniently timed removal/bounce exiles all of your permanents. There's probably a theoretical meta (not this one) in which reanimating Iona and/or Terastodon is superior to reanimating Worldgorger. Path to Exile and Surgical Extraction/Extirpate aren't unheard of.

Iona on blue isn't as awful as you're making it out to be against "blue." Against shops, Worldgorger is probably better than Uktabi Kong, but I'm not convinced that it's by a large margin. Since nothing legal matches Uktabi Kong's theoretical power against shops, I'll happily concede that Worldgorger is easily the better strategy.

So these seem interesting.
Strategic planning sort of upgrade.
KRec that can pitch to force, and hits more cards, and is one cheaper to flashback. If any decks still play that card they get an upgrade.
Forbidden Alchemy 2u Instant (C) Look at the top four cards of your library. Put one of them into your hand and the rest into your graveyard. Flashback 6b Illus. David Rapoza 55/264
Memory's Journey 1u Instant (U) Target player shuffles up to three target cards from his or her graveyard into his or her library. Flashback G Illus. Slawomir Maniak 66/264

Past in Flames 3 Sorcery Mythic Rare Each instant or sorcery card in your graveyard gains flashback until end of turn. The flashback cost is equal to its mana cost. Flashback 4{R} Shit's getting pretty real.
