Vintage at PandemoniumThe first one was a great success, so we're back with another tournament for duals Saturday, November 19thThe event begins at 1pm. Registration starts at 12. This is an unlimited proxy event. $25 entry fee Sample prizes below: For 16 players:
1st place: 2x Blue dual 2nd place: 1x Blue dual 3rd place: Store credit 4th place: Store credit
For 20 players:
1st place: 2x Blue dual 2nd place: 1x Blue dual and store credit 3rd: Cash refund of entrance fee 4th: Same
For 24 players:
1st place: 3x Blue dual 2nd place: 2x Blue dual 3rd place: 1/2 box 4th place: 1/2 box Decklists will be required at this event, with all proxies marked. Proxy rulesDue the the higher value of this tournament, our proxy rules will be more strict than in our other events. * All proxies must clearly have the correct card name, mana cost, card type, and all relevant rules text (or a close approximation for common cards). You can either use a sharpie on a basic land card or card back, or you can modify a card by altering the text on it. Textless proxies altered this way will be acceptable as long as they contain the card name and mana cost. * If you use the "shapie on back of card" method, opaque sleeves will be required. * Abbreviations will be acceptable as long as they are unambiguous. For example, a proxy marked "Jace TMS" with the mana cost and "+0 Brainstorm" "-1: Unsummon", etc, would be acceptable. * Paper slips in card sleeves will not be accepted unless all 75 are done the same way. Please check with the head judge if you have any questions. If you have any questions about the validity of your proxies, please speak to me or the head judge before the event begins. By the way, I'll be doing my best to have live streaming feature matches set up. Never done it before and my webcam is a piece of shit, so we'll see. If anyone has a halfway decent one to lend I'd appreciate it.

Just wondering, what has attendance of the more expensive tourneys been compared to when these were only 5 dollars? I know several people that would be interested in the cheaper ones, but won’t come out for a 25 dollar tournament due to not being good enough at the format.

The average attendance for the $5/$10 ones have been about the same.. most often 13+/-5. We've had two $25 ones so far. The first had about 25 people, this one had 14. I think the lower attendance this time was because there was a large legacy event in CT the same day. There were also 2-3 regulars who had schedule conflicts who would have come otherwise. I expect the next one to be much larger. If your friend wants to get better, we usually playtest every week monday/wednesday nights between 5-7pm. We'll be meeting tonight for playtesting if they want to come along.

If people are interested in a ride, on Monday nights I drive from work in Cambridge down to Scholars in Bridgewater for Monday night Vintage. I could take up to 3 extra people, leave around 6, would be back in Cambridge around 10-12 depending on how many rounds. I'll stop by Pandemonium tonight around 5:30 to see if anyone wants to go. -Adrian

I think these would be better as 5/10 dollar events to actually start building a community. I've talked to a few people around the Boston area who are long time T1 players and we came to the conclusion that 25 dollar events for non P9 prizes isn't the best way to grow a community from the ground up. If we really want to get serious about building a community in Cambridge we should focus on better prize support for higher dollar events and run lower cost events to attract people to the format. Approaching the Panda Legacy community is where I've started, I even got my friend Dave to go to Waterbury 15 after playing T1 for a week. I know a lot of the Legacy players have taken interest in the format but no one wants to test the water at 25 dollars and at 25 dollars no ringers want to play for 2 duals.

Huh? That's what I've been doing. The normal monthly ones started at $5 to build community, and the community asked me to raise it to $10. The $25 ones are only a handful of times a year, and they do still attract new people. I don't know what kind of prize support people would like, but it's not feasible to offer a $1000 prize if we only take in $350 in entrance fees. Things like duals and forces are also legacy cards, so we get some crossover from that community. I'm open to suggestions though, if anyone has some.

It seems to me that there is some confusion about this.
It seems to me that some people think that these $25 events are going to become the norm. Though I may just be misinterpreting.
At any rate, this is not the case and the plan is certainly to keep running the monthly $10 events.
This also may not be the place to post this, and if not maybe a mod can point me to the right place to start a topic but here's my idea:
Currently there are 4 of us that get together fairly regularly on Monday/Wednesday night at Pandemonium for playtesting. We've tossed around the idea a couple of times for each throwing in like $3-5 and having a small tourney between the 4 of us winner takes all. Now...with 4 people this is none too exciting, but should we be able to get 6-8 people showing up, this could actually become a pretty good weekly way for us to playtest/build community in addition to the monthly $10 tourneys. Now I'm willing to talk to Pandemonium and try and see if they're willing to host so long as I think we can get some people.
What say you.

I've talked to Pandemonium before about it and they said they probably only have room on Thursday. I can't be there Thursdays though unfortunately, and since it's wargaming night they might not have a judge to organize it

Is Pandemonium ok with a casual agreement during Monday/Wednesday playtesting? Something like everyone buys a booster from the store, winner gets all the boosters?

We'd have to ask Nico. If Thursday is the only night they could do it, I can be there to facilitate, but I think the suggestion of buying boosters/running it casual would be the way to go. If it's not a ridiculously large number of people (ie < 15) which I think we'd be hard pressed to get more than that we can just disperse around the store, we shouldn't need a whole lot of room. Also if it's casual, we should need minimal involvement from the store (ie: either buying in/or buying boosters). And if it's boosters they wouldn't even need to cash us out. Gavin, perhaps we can chat with Nico on Wednesday and see what he says? (Either way it's business for them, so I'm sure they wouldn't mind it if we can work the logistics.

So I talked to Nico yesterday when we were there for our usual playtesting.
His response was essentially that he can't promise us space for a tournament, but provided we can find room to play (which for a small-ish event wouldn't be difficult) he has no problem with us running it. The only stipulation is if we do anything with money it has to go through the store (ie: buying packs or store credit or something like that). The store wouldn't be taking a cut or anything like that it's more just for legal purposes I guess.
That being said if anyone is interested it looks like we will be running these smaller events on Wednesday nights. Unless more people are available for Monday we can consider running it whenever we have enough people.
