Young Pyromancer Creature - Human Shaman Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, put a 1/1 red Elemental creature token onto the battlefield. 2/1 A mini-Talrand. Half the price, half the size. Seems pretty decent overall.

Love this card. It's not blue, so it can't be pitched to force, but it is great at adding a relevant clock to a burn deck. Not sure if it is as good as guttersnipe or kiln fiend for that though. It does avoid single removal spells from totally ruining the added clock (if you can make some tokens first), but the clock is probably slower than fiend or snipe.

Glad you like it. The clock is slower, but free creature tokens are great v. Shop. This guy seems good with Ancient Grudge, Snapcaster, & Mental Misstep, and is very Cavern of Souls friendly.

A legitimate turn 1 play in blue control, and costed well enough to be put into delver builds. I think this card will definitely see play.

Agree. This is playable.Considering Mogg-War Marshal, creating 2 tokens is enough for depreciation, which is not difficult so much.

This is a good card. The obvious comparison is Quirion Dryad, which saw significant play not that long ago in Gush decks. This card is significantly better than that, imo.

My first thought when I saw it was gush. It seems like a solid card to fuel wins in a more control-oriented gush deck. if it dies you probably can still win just on the back of the tokens it makes.

Could.t this just be good enough to run in straight burn? It gives u the 1 thing I missed anyways in straight burn, blockers! Now u dont need to waste two bolts on a goyf. You just bolt, chain, etc etc thier i love this card.face off and either swing w dudes or hold back as roadblocks. I think this could def help burn become something viable.

The problem with burn is not that it doesn't have blockers, but that it doesn't have a draw engine. This card doesn't solve that. I do think it will be ok in burn, just maybe in Legacy.

There are ways to get rid of these 1/1's, I wouldn't put too much trust in it, just see it as extra value that must be dealt with. Imagine two of these things and you get in a little counter war

U/R counter/burn/tempo has so many tools that I'm sure it's possible to come up with something very good actually. I have been using Nivmagus Elemental with some succes, and I think that would be a starting point. Then there are other creatures which all have synergy with each other: Guttersnipe, Talrand, Snapcaster Mage, Delver etc.
Edit: I could also definitely see someone try out a shell with Young Pyromancer, Snapcaster Mage and Skullclamp.

I think that best strategies around this card will involve Cavern of Souls. It has obvious synergy with Snapcaster Mage. Regarding Shops Matchup by playing multiple Mental Missteps maindeck we can always play a 1cc spell and Misstep it to get two 1/1 Elementals, not a bad way to recycle those useless counters.

I really like this guy as it creates permanents which as we all know is key against stax. Landing this guy completely blanks tangle wire, it buys time by blocking Golem - nice!

It's aggressive (2/1), under three mana, creates permanents, and multiple copies in play are a good thing. Broken, no. Vintage playable, hell yes. Red has needed decent cards like this for the longest time.

I think this guy just might be the missing link in a RUB delver list with Gush but no Goyf for quick beats (because no green). Like Think of Notion Thief in such a list as well as an amazing blue trump alongside this guy as a pretty solid shop trump. Could be a deadly combination. And the fact that you have a 3/2 Flying Beatstick and a steady stream of 1/1 Elementals when left unchecked means that you don't need a bomb like Tinker->Bot (many decks know how to hate him out these days anyway) or TV/Key. All you need is control over:
1. The Board when facing shops and when facing other fish
2. The Stack when facing blue bomb decks (including Oath)
3. The Grave when facing Dredge.
Oath seems like the weakest matchup for such a list based on its colors and I'm not exactly sure what to do about that. Thoughts?

If I were to play any sort of Beats deck as you described, I'll probably always run 4 Grafdiggers in the main. I think it is just very strong against all but MUD. For MUD, you have bodies, burns and counters in the main

Except that such a deck would almost certainly be running Snapcaster Mage and, as you know, Snapcaster Mage and GD Cage don't really get along. -Storm

I had in mind that maybe a Gush shell with Pyromancer instead of Qurion Dryad could incorporate Graffdiggers in the main and I'm not familiar how well Snappy & Gush work together. If the direction of the deck is to use 4 Snappy to abuse of Pyromancer, then my start point would be to fit along 4 Nivmagus, 4 Probe, 4 Flusterstorm, 4 Duress, a mix of Bolts, Chain of Vapour, Steel Sabotage... AND 4 Preordain instead of Gush in the main. No Graffdigger of course

As good as he is, hes probably terrible in burn, at least in the traditional sense. Burn, which just wants to damage as fast as it can and plays little to no disruption that is not also a card that does damage would think this well too slow for 2 mana and 1 card burn can get 4 damage to the dome, and that damage is not summoning sick, does not require other spells, etc. Some sort of counterburn deck with blue draw, red burn, and counterbalance and top/cantrips might be a different story, because then your not gunning for the fastest win possible, just a faster one than the guy across from you.

I plan to make a fun deck with 4 Blood Funnel and 4 Young Pyromancer. I believe there could be a lot of broken things happening in such a deck. At this point that is all I have, but it might become something real. It could spawn some kind of combo/aggro design that could be protected with Caverns and Sin Sollectors.

I find a little problem with Burning-tree emissary: its mana does not grant cavern effect, so creatures paid with its mana are counterable. Still, being mana-free is good applying pressure.
More interesting shamans: fauna shaman, fulminator mage,Lord of Shatterskull Pass (I was happy with it before bolt got common), Sakura-Tribe Elder, vexing susher (caverns 5 and up), Ulvenwald Tracker and Yeva, Nature's Herald. Yeva is expensive, but i find it really interesting. Brian uses Exava with some success, and Yeva could fill a similar spot, being played at EOT and attacking jace. Playing creatures at opponent's EOT sounds at least cute, and even more if they are uncounterable. Probably just cute and not good enough.
Shamans deck asks for a RG shell, but I doubt it would be better that your human decks. And pyromancer do not fit with those creatures.

If you're running an amount of dudes that suggests you want to run cavern, it means you'd be light on ways to make elementals . At least in a amount that makes this card appealing in a format with black lotus. durdling around and getting a little bit of 1/1 value of of fow and brainstorm the few times you cast them in your cavern creature deck instead of making dudes isn't bad per se, but it isn't something I'd build a vintage deck around, or really be excited about. It just seems simpler to make a 5/6, no assembly required. However, laying this dude down in the context of an engine seems like it is worth while. I haven't tested this guy yet but I hope it makes a significant significant improvement against shops for gush.

I've played around with this guy in decks in other formats he's great there. I can see a preordain or gush generating a blocker in the early game making gush decks really really good. The fact that he's a combo piece is a bonus.
