Former head of Wizards R&D and Magic Hall of Famer Randy Buehler has organized this pretty sweet invitational tournament with Magic Online Power Nine as prizes.

Randy did a preview show here: http://www.twitch.tv/randybuehler/b/559924597

Should be interesting.

Hope the tenth is Finkel or even better Kai Budde.

Will this be weekly?

I believe the last slot has been filled by Chris Pikula.

I'm looking forward to watching these. Randy's really brought in a nice mix of high end pros and Vintage specialists.

I may not catch these live, but hopefully they'll be archived for future viewing?

Vintage is a lovely format, it's too bad so few people can play because the supply of power is so small.

Chess really changed when they decided to stop making Queens and Bishops.  I'm just glad I got my copies before the prices went crazy.

This sounds great!  I know what I'm doing on Tuesday nights now.

Yeah, Twitch broadcasts are archived.  I don't imagine you'll have any trouble viewing it after the fact.

From either anecdotal or following dailys, does anyone have a sense of how the pros who play vintage have been doing?

@Steve, any prediction on metagame?

lsv has some videos up on ChannelFireball. I've also seen him in a couple dailies I've joined, but haven't played against him. I assume he'll play some sort of blue deck. It's clear from the videos that lsv has a good handle on the format; no idea about the others though.

I'm playing Randy in the first round. Based on historical factors, I expect him to be on Oath of some kind, but I could be wrong. In any case, I'm really looking forward to this, and I think that this will bring some attention to the format.

FWIW he did play Dredge at the tournament where it first broke out.

I remember because we carpooled and t00l barned your Slaver list that maindecked a Tormod's Crypt (before Dredge was a deck mind you) and totally blew him out because of it Very Happy

I guess this question will be answered in due time, but will the broadcasts be 'omniscient' views of both players' hands?  If so, will Randy/the match participants give commentary on their thoughts and choices over the match replay?  I think that would be ideal, except that it can't happen live...

Or will we be 'riding along' with one player in each match?  If we're riding along with one player in each match (or, better, each player records the match so that both perspectives are available), I imagine running commentary will occur naturally?

In any case, I'm really looking forward to this.  I may not consider MTGO an entertainment worth buying into for myself personally, but the opportunity to watch Vintage matches between talented players, for free, is enormously appealing.  My thanks to all those participating!

Currently they don't have a way to show both players' hands unless they're playing in the same room :/

Great initiative! It would be nice if players streamed on their own, instead of showing both players via cam.

I think doing it this way, would provide much higher quality coverage than both players chit-chatting, because of:
1) beeing able to view the players hand
2) the player beeing able to chat and reasoning about his plays.

EFro or Tom Martell said in Randy's twitch video that the CFB people are considering streaming their PoV on the CFB Twitch.

I would root for Zehrbus if he was in it, but unfortunately he is not.

LOL outside of Vintage players who've been around nearly a decade, nobody knows who I am. They got to go with more name recognition. Smile I wanted to get Webster in (David Ochoa).

I watched the preview show from the recording last night.  Randy and EFro's chatter about the Maher/Davis finals from 1999 made me go back and watch that match too!

It was DDoS'd earlier and only just came back up. The stream is up but it's laggy, if you keep trying it eventually loads.

While Twitch was down for a while, it's back up now. The final game is wrapping up. Also, the previous rounds are archived. Here is my match against Randy:

I feel like next week is my best possible matchup in the entire field, so I"m pretty happy Smile  Wrapter is playing my Burning Tendrils deck Smile

In game one in my matchup this week, what took so long is that I was calculating the doomsday pile not only to beat Null Rod, but also double Force or Force + Daze, because he had 5 cards in his hand.  I spent most of my time trying to figure out how to win with Fastbond, but I didn't have enough life post doomsday. I'd only get 3 land drops.

At the end of game two, I won with 4 life, and my hand was Force, Misstep, Preordain - so I could beat two counters, but he didn't have any.

I think Shay misplayed a tiny bit in game 1.
I would have waited with strip mine until i entered the time walk turn. This gives a bit more information. Also, i am not sure why you tinkered for mindslaver?

What would you have tinkered for?

Thanks for the feedback, Zeus. Discussing plays like this can be a great way to improve.

Why did I Strip Mine on my second main phase rather than on my Timewalk turn? To prevent anything untoward happening during my end step. The odds of a Hurkyl's Recall in the deck were low, and he may well have already cast it at that point. But if he did have that card, then I would much rather it happen during my second main phase rather than my end step. By Stripping the Island there, I play around Hurkyl's basically for free.

So, why did I Tinker for Mindslaver there? There was nothing left in my deck to get except mana and a Mindslaver. I draw the Tinker into an empty hand. Getting Mindslaver means I can use that in case he does anything, or in the very least to Timewalk him. And it's not like Tinker was going to do anything else that game.

Smmenen, I was watching your Twitch stream (since I couldn't get your match live) and was wondering: Game 1, right in the beginning, you Preordain and decides to put Misstep under because you thought he was on Shops.
I would've played differently: keeping Misstep when you don't know what your opponent is playing always seems good. And if he was actually playing Shops, Misstep could've been the FoW fodder you needed, leaving you with 2 cantrips and 1 top next turn - for me a very good position. What's your opinion on this? Am I wrong?

Hopefully someone plays UW/Landstill/MUC the following rounds.  This is fantastic btw.
The next 2 rounds will be with the same decks, I believe. Am I right?
