7/18/15

Twenty-one people gathered in the shadow of the Big House to battle it out in unforgiving, unairconditioned weather for five rounds of unsanctioned vintage. The field was diverse, containing elements of Oath, Shops, Dredge, blue-based control, and even a couple of Belcher decks (though Delver was strangely absent):

While this was taking place, the true glory was unfolding in an Onslaught cube.

It's hard to put into words how much fun this event was. It was truly a pleasure to host.

Props:
Kevin Cron for crushing BOTH Ohio State jerseys in the top 8.
Nat Moes for encouragement, logistics, and damn fine baking.
JACO for helping with prize support and being a model house-guest.
Kevin Poenisch for helping with organizing the event and top 8ing with a hilarious deck.
Jimmy McCarthy for setting up and managing our stream.

Slops:
Michigan weather -- no air conditioning obviously meant it was going to be the hottest day of the year.
Our stream lighting making the top8 painful to follow.
Seroogy leaving his sandwich unprotected.

If you missed the stream our archived footage is here (over six hours of vintage!). Also contains some footage of what happens when you don't protect your sandwich: http://www.twitch.tv/seriousvintage/b/678754353

Thank you for posting the in depth report.  I read Justin's article and enjoyed it.

That deck with the Dragonlords looks like heaven on earth.  I love everything about it except the Dredge part.   Smile

Is the plan just to hard cast big dragony things, post board?  Is there a combo I'm missing?  I'm so confused.

I'm the only other legal target, so I draw 6 cards, and he literally quits Magic.

Congrats to all. I still find it hilarious that shop players say it's not the best deck out there.

Congrats to all. I still find it hilarious that shop players say it's not the best deck out there.

Some of the shop decks listed vary by more than 20 cards in their mainboards. Players failing to recognize the different strategies are one component of the archetype's success.

Not that impressive, when you compare against the field. There were numerous decks sporting the alleged 'Best Draw Engine in Vintage,' which leaves like 18-19 mana sources for your deck, which then leaves you naturally vulnerable to good Workshop pilots. These are great against other blue decks, and not that great against decks that cast Chalice of the Void for 1, play Wasteland, and then prevent you from playing half of your deck between Chalice and a bunch of Sphere effects. There were also 2 Charbelcher decks, which have a very tough time beating Workshops on the draw. Workshops were a good call for that metagame, and I'm disappointed I didn't sleeve them up myself for that particular field.

This seems to be the case.  I mean serum powder taps for mana right?  Very Happy

Seriously is Kevin Poenisch's sideboard just there to troll the SMIP podcast statistics? If so even more props to that man right there!

The deck actually seemed to perform pretty well. He only had trouble with belcher (a terrible matchup for all dredge) and from decks running a lot of copy effects. Shops were theoretically an issue, but I definitely watched him hardcast Elesh Norn through 3 sphere effects.

Anyone willing to share the Esper Bomberman list?  Are all of the deck lists posted elsewhere?
