Eric Becker - Plainly Defined Vintage innovation and results more than anyone this year.
Rich Shay - Rich Shay
JDizzle - 2.5c long ftw
TK - amazing finishes with variety of decks
MoxLotus - Great thought put into non-traditional decks that performed
Teh Salad (13Nova) - Small changes to mediocre decks + out of the box ideas = insanity in vintage
SMemmenarch - Overanalysis forgiven, if the unknown only know one name in vintage, this would be it.
Brian Demars - Dedication to a deck most see as dead, with performance to back it up
Dave Feinstien - I heard that Dave Feinstien once broke vintage with Llanowar Elves
Mike Long - Grimlong, 5c long, pitchlong, long.dec, 2.5c long...this guy must be good.

5  Archives / Tournament Announcement Forum / Re: [Tournament] Mox Tourney June 24th in Clinton, IA on: June 01, 2006, 10:36:12 pm
With 30, the prizes will be (Assuming i don't secure a mox)

1st/2nd draft both LoA and Bazaar
3rd - set of forces
4th - zerk

at 18ish-20 they would be

pick of loa/bazar
2nd set of forces

if i do get a mox, it would be the 1st place prize as soon as we hit 25, along with forces and zerk...

Basically, i'm going to end up taking attendance, and giving the best i possibly can for prizes.  I dont need to make any real profit other than money back on the cards and for the room.  I wish i had something more concrete in place, but i wanted to get this up as soon as possible.

Tournament for a Possible Mox in Clinton on Saturday, June 24th

Tournament will take place at Godfather's Pizza in Clinton, IA
Address: 1841 Lincoln Way, Clinton, IA 52732 (Hwy 30)

Entry fee is $20

Vintage, with 10 Proxies allowed.

Swiss Rounds with cut to top8

Reg. will start at 11 AM

Play will start at 11:30 AM

Please bring a decklist with you.

Proxies should be altered otherwise tournament legal cards (doesnt HAVE to be basic land, but there must be no confusion that it is a proxy, and for what card the proxy is for...also no World Champion or Unglued cards due to different border color)

Final prize will ultimately depend on attendance, the prize pool will consist of the following: (to clarify...Any of the following could be given for 1st and 2nd depending on attendance)

Mox (1st)
Library of Alexandra (1st)
Bazaar of Baghdad (1st)
Playset of Force of Will (2nd)
Berserk (2nd)

**If I am unable to secure a mox before tourney date(The one I had lined up fell through) then Both Library and Bazaar will go as long as enough people show.**

Since there will be no 'vendor' to speak of I will also have my personal binder for any trades/sales during the tournament. Also, because of no vendor, and no official sponsor other than myself, card sales will be allowed on the site.
7  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / GWS New Member on: March 27, 2006, 08:03:37 pm
Since GWS has established itself as a vintage POWERHOUSE, We...well I...decided it was only right to start announcing as members leave and join the team.  We've just added the first member since Richmond and is probably the best addition in a good long time.

I honestly don't know how much she'll be able to contribute as far as strategy or deckbuilding, but a strong contention for our newest objective, overtaking the JSS!
8  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: Ongoing Richmond Results on: March 19, 2006, 10:49:02 pm
Brian Fisher won vs Kowal in finals

Fisher beat Becker(IT) in Semi's

No idea what fisher was playing, my guess either FlameVault control or IT

I dont know how rest of top8 went,

Wonderful job with these events, I myself will be attending all 3 chicago events in an attempt to break out into the format.  I look forward to seeing the folks i've heard so much about as I scrub out to them in rounds 1 and 2.

These events alone are why I've decided to get into vintage competitavely.  Way to go.
11  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / [Deck] Kobolds on: January 13, 2005, 02:54:37 pm
In the testing i've done with this deck, I find that more often you're going off assuming that you'll end up with everything you need to finish the job, and that more often its the tendrils that is missing more than anything.  I would much rather have a 2nd diaboloc intent and would easily run this over vampric tutor in almost all cases, the only time i would rather have vampiric is pre-going off as a set up.

Tourney is just 9 days away!

I'm hopefully expecting a turnout between 20-30 people so it should be a great time!

I forgot to mention that from the time the tourney starts until 1:30 PM there will be a pizza buffet open that is very reasonably priced, not to mention we'll be at a pizza place, grub availability the rest of the day won't be an issue.

Whit

If you do plan on attending, drop me a PM or email so that I can get a better count of attendance.
14  Archives / Archived Vintage Tournament Forum / [Tournament] Dec 11th Clinton Iowa UNL Berzerk 10+ Proxy! on: November 30, 2004, 04:07:08 am
I am a new TO, looking to establish a strong vintage following in the area.  I'm currently working without the support of the local shop, though, hoping that will change.

This is the first of its kind, in Clinton, and will serve as a test for a continuing type 1 environment in the area!

Strong attendance will go a long way to ensure a thriving future for tournaments with prizes such as Library of Alexandria, and hopefully eventually Power!

Details:

What: River City Open I
When: Saturday, Dec 11th 2004, Deck Reg: 10:30AM, Start Time: 11:00AM
Format: Vintage 10+ Proxy
Entry: $5 plus $0.50 for each proxy over 10
Prizes: 1st Place gets an EX UNL Berserk
2nd Place gets an Arabian Nights City of Brass!
3-4 undetermined, depends on attendance!
Where - Happy Joe's Pizza in Clinton, Iowa (map to be added soon)
            408 S 1st St

Please give some type of feedback either way if you're close and might be able to attend so i can get a better fix on how the turn out will be...

Thanks!  Hope to see many of you there!

updated initial post to include suggested changes that i agree with, and could see fitting the criteria.
16  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Flood Light on: November 24, 2004, 12:34:54 am
I think that this just isnt realistic, and rather than removing from the game, it may be more flavorful with the name 'flood light' to be something like the following:

2WU
Instant
Up to two target attacking creatures deal no combat damage this turn.
Draw a Card.

The dealing no damage is definately white in flavor, and also would corresond with creatures being 'stunned' by the light.   And, since i'm sure it was primarily part of the reason the card was created, it still cantrips.

18  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Prodigal Apprentice on: November 23, 2004, 02:27:54 am
hmmm... Agreed.

What about the following adjustments..

Prodigal Apprentice
2U
Creature - Wizard
1U, T: Return target nonland permanent to its owner's hand.
1/1

Brings into check the comes into play ability, plus with it being a Tap ability, it flavorfully pays homage to its namesake, Prodigal Sorcerer. but also keeps in line with his underpowered cousin, Temporal Adept, since it is now nonland
19  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Prodigal Apprentice on: November 23, 2004, 01:36:55 am
Designed to fill common wizard slot (Assuming set needs are up to date)

Prodigal Apprentice
2U
Creature - Wizard
You may play Prodigal Apprentice anytime you can play an instant.
When Prodigal Apprentice comes into play, return target permanent to it's owner's hand.
1/1

I like this either as bounce or twiddle, obv. adjusted mana cost to account for 1/1 body...this /might/ be too good for a common, but def. not swingy enough for a rare, I dont think.

Current Wording

Prodigal Apprentice
2U
Creature - Human Wizard
You may Play Prodigal Apprentice anytime you can play an instant.
When Prodigal Apprentice comes into play, return target nonland permanent to its owner's hand.
1/1
20  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Type One, power, reprints, and YOU! on: November 17, 2004, 02:45:56 pm
I have brought it up before at different places, and others have too, that it would definately benefit wizards to reprint gold-bordered non-tourney legal decks from say the t8 of gencon t1 champions, similar to how they do the world champions decks now.  This would do several things.

1) Be the highest selling gold-bordered decks in wizards history.

2) Raise awareness of Vintage in the entire Magic Community.

3) Provide easy ways for current Vintage players to throw decks together for playtesting.

4) Provide a nice looking proxy for any who would want to partake in non-sanctioned proxy tournaments, which is arguably the most common type of vintage tournament right now.

5) This /would/ create additional income for wizards not only by selling the decks themselves, but would also bring to light that many cards that are IN PRINT today are needed to be competative in t2. (from curiosity to Sundering Titan, Triskelion, etc)

I truely think, while not in the ammount that standard may, the rising awareness or activity in any given format is always a good thing for the game in general, and I have to think that Wizards would want that.

21  Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Potential Tournament 10 Proxy in Iowa on: November 15, 2004, 10:52:06 pm
I'm considering holding a 10 proxy in Clinton, Iowa (approx 3 hours west of chicago)

Prizes would be:

1st Unl Berzerk
2nd AN City of Brass
3-4 as attendance allowed

Entry would be $5

Tentative date is Dec. 11

If you would consider attending this event, please reply to let me know, I want to get an idea if an event like this would even be plausable without power or a workshop to offer....would need about 20 people to make it worth while.

Thanks

Whit

[EDIT] Tourney has been scratched until i can find an appropriate venue, original shop owner pwned me.  If you can offer any hope or other advice, PM.
22  Eternal Formats / Creative / [Deck] Experamental 7/10 build, feedback wanted on: June 21, 2004, 07:06:05 pm
Little background...I'm just getting into vintage after some mild success in type 2 around here, and i've been expearamenting with 7/10 a little bit as it seems to be the deck that fits my tastes most...here's the build i'm using.

1x Prodigal Sorcerer
1x Memnarch
4x Goblin Welder
2x Triskelion
3x Sundering Titan
1x Duplicant
(12)

4x Brainstorm
3x Thirst for Knowledge
2x Fire/Ice
1x Tinker
1x Timetwister (1)
1x Wheel of Fortune (1)
1x Fact or Fiction
1x Memory Jar
(14)

3x FoW
3x Chalice of the Void
(6)

3x Gilded Lotus
1x Sol Ring
1x Mana Vault
1x Mana Crypt
1x Black Lotus (1)
1x Mox Sapphire (1)
1x Mox Ruby (1)
1x Mox Emerald (1)
1x Mox Pearl (1)
1x Mox Jet (1)
(12)

4x Mishra's Workshop
4x Shivan Reef
1x Glimmervoid
3x City of Brass
1x Gemstone Mine
1x Tolarian Academy
2x Ancient Tomb
(16)

SIDEBOARD

3x Trinisphere
2x Fire/Ice
3x Blue Elemental Blast
3x Red Elemental Blast
3x tormod's crypt (1)
1x Duplicant

I use the prodigal for selfish reasons, is this slot too valueable to add a bit of personality to the deck?  i dont see it getting countered much, and when all else fails, it can take down an opposing welder..

The other thing that i dont see in other 7/10 decks is the fire/ice, i'm mostly running them because i have them, and intuitions seemed to fit even less Razz
