Its still Lame its the only deck that calls to sb at minimum 6 cards vs it...And heck give most dredge pilots a blue deck and see how well they can really play. With the exception of the hybrid Matt Elias HAHA
I'm pretty sure if you gave a blue player a dredge they would not do well with it.

If I thoughtseized or duressed you during the first turn, I would never snag mental mistep from you, since I could easily play around it. Spell pierce I might take, because even though it can be played around, it can hit my jace and a slew of other CRITICAL cards if I'm not careful.
Who would let a duress or thoughtseize resolve if they are holding mental misstep?

12  Eternal Formats / Null Rod Based Aggro / Re: Null Rod Goblins on: January 28, 2011, 12:54:55 pm
Here's a contentious statement that begs the question.  If you disagree with it, I'll accuse you of derailing the thread.

Here's my decklist, I've tested it a lot...in my head:
4 Null Rod
4 Goblin Lackey
4 Siege-Gang Commander
48 Mountain

This doesn't even need a sideboard because with so many basics, the brown matchup is amazing.  I may not have any turn 1 plays other than Lackey but they're sure to be in my opening hand and always drop a Commander on turn 2.  My Null Rods are sure to resolve and negate your win-cons.  No restricted tutoring to help find things when I need them?  That's because I don't need it.  Fixing is for unlucky people.  If you claim that my deck is strictly suboptimal for lack of including Mana Crypt  and Demonic Consultation, I'll remind you that that's not what MY deck has and accuse you of derailing the thread.  I've already accepted that it's okay to beg the question, after all.

Questions?  Comments?  Remember, I've posted here 10, maybe 20 times.  I've been to a tournament at some point and know all about Vintage.  I'll critically review your comments using my emotions and react without any attempt to describe or use communicable frameworks for evaluating the optimality of my choices.

And yes, this post is well worth the bold red text.
What is the relevance of how many times someone has posted on themanadrain.com? Does this mean if someone has under a certain amount of post they don't know anything about vintage?
13  Eternal Formats / Null Rod Based Aggro / Re: Null Rod Goblins on: January 28, 2011, 12:49:09 pm
I think you guys are misunderstanding my position on this deck.  I've been playing goblins for at least the past 10 months or so and have played in about 15+ different tournaments(including 50 something place at waterbury) with the deck.  I have tried different configurations(SSS, 4 earwigs, mogg fanatics, vandals, main deck leylines, vial, chalices just to name a few) and this is what I have found to be strongest in my metagame in the northeast.  Most of my losses come from misplays on my end rather than a blowout because power > unpowered.  I am not the greatest player but I do have more experience with the deck then you guys are giving me credit for.
Perhaps your post should reflect this by revealing a deeper reasoning as to why you play and do not play certain things. Lay out some common game states and explain why things are optimal.  I look at you're reasoning behind null rod and read "still the king of hate cards.  Now even better with metalworker resurgence in the Northeastern US. Shuts off vault and must be dealt with a lot of the time buying you precious time to swing in the for win" and really have a hard time believing you're going to out prison the prison/robot deck, and that this card is anything but good against oath and fish. There is an argument here for tezz matchups, but it seems to me like more earwig squad would solve the problem with more applications in other matchups. For example, it lives through clasm, and if you get fire spouted, ripping a 5/3 is pretty good recovery.

How is earwig squad going to be better in the prison deck matchup where he will cost over 5 mana and just get duplicated or just not be able to get through a karn. Nul rod will be able to stop karn along with the prison decks easy mana.

Well run event as usual, cool to see that 50 people showed up despite the NFL playoffs going on.  Congrats to Ed Carey for winning the event.

I am wondering what Jake and Sam played against during the day?
I know that Jake played against Allen with Expresso Stax round 2, myself round 3 on Oath, and the top 8 list of Trygon GAT round 4.  Then he double drew into the top 8.  I believe that he played the mirror round 1 but I could be incorrect.
Those were my opponents for the tourney

Last thing .. to echo Womba, I have -never- lost a game where I resolved a dread return on a FKZ, never. I have ranted and raved in the past about Iona. I simply do not understand people's obsession with putting it in dredge. I used to run an Angel of Despair in case my opponent ran moat, ensnaring bridge etc but eventually took her out because I never ran into those cards. My current list runs 1 FKZ (sometimes 2) as my dread return targets. Sometimes I pack an Angel of Despair in the board.
Of course your not gonna lose a game when you dread return Flamekin because your not going to dread return it unless you can kill your opponent

I like Firestorm.  I think that Firestorm's value, particularly in Legacy Dredge, is often to put Dredgers in the graveyard while simultaneously setting up Careful Study and Breakthrough.  But because Vintage Dredge relies so much on Bazaar, which is also the discard outlet, I think some of the "discard" aspect of Firestorm is not as necessary.

Would you keep a hand with Firestorm but no Bazaar?  Maybe, but it would be a bit of a stretch I think.  And if that hand is worth keeping, it's likely going to be a keeper with Contagion too.

How often are you worried about creatures with a toughness greater than 1?
The reason i told mark to play firestorm and why i like it over contagion is that when your opponents hate is 2 yixilid jailers you can pitch 2 cards of any color and i dont like contagion because sometimes you have to pitch your only dredger or you can just not have a black card and if you have to pitch a black creuture your ichorids get harder to return

150.

I think I'm being conservative.  If Hadley had 70, and nearly all of the NY, NJ and PA guys didn't show, that alone should push you well over 130.  Throw in some guys from Cleveland, DC, people who don't post on TMD and a Dutchman and I think you're going to crack 150.
ill go 151

Me and my dad will be taking this tourney by storm
You're both playing Storm decks?!? WTF is going on here?

Oh I get it, it must be some kind of DredgeStorm deck! You know, Dredge your graveyard, then flashback a Recoup targeting a Yawg's Will and go crazy. It could work. How you're going to make all the mana to do this is a question I choose to ignore.
bazaar lotus bitterordeal ftw

I went 4-0-2 in the swiss, then promptly got blown out in 2 games in top 8. Game 1 I kept decent hand with 2 land, Ancestral, Divining Top, Spell Pierce in what I know is a Tezz mirror. He plays land, Mox, Lotus, Jace, Vampiric...Game 2 I keep land, Sapphire, 2x confidant, pierce, Jace.  He FOWs Confidant, then he plays land, mox, sol ring, voltaic key, tinker for time vault!

In other matches I believe UR Landstill lost to fish, and then there was another fish deck and a Storm deck.  There were infinite Trygon Predators at this tourney.
chris i thought you said turn 1 vault key never happens
