1  Eternal Formats / Blue-Based Control / Re: Why play Bomberman? (NE US) on: June 26, 2014, 05:14:18 pm
I just returned to these boards yesterday and from what I've been reading, things seem a little off. People seem to be really greedy and talk about Jace the Mindsculpter like he's a draw engine! He's downright not. He's a win condition! He is in legacy at least!  Very Happy

I think Jace just adds to the diversity of this deck's win conditions.

1. Combo
2. Slow creature grind with control backup
3. Control opponent's draws then -12 Jace them.
2  Eternal Formats / Blue-Based Control / Re: Why play Bomberman? (NE US) on: June 26, 2014, 04:30:51 pm
4 FoW
4 Brainstorm
4 Mana Drain
3 Thirst for knowledge
2 Cunning Wish
2 Repeal
3 Trinket Mage
2 Salvagers
1 Fact or Fiction
2 Aven Mindcensor
1 Time Walk
1 Ancestral Recall
8 SoLoMoxCrpyt
1 Aether Spellbomb
1 Tormod's Crypt
1 Pithing Needle
1 Eningeered Explosives
2 Sensei's Divining Top

4 Tundras
4 Flooded Strand
2 Polluted Delta
4 Island
1 Plains
1 Tolarian Academy
1 Library of Alexandria

This is about how I ran Bomberman. I'd say that's a bunch of control, especially with the Trinket Mage toolbox.

I don't know what Bomberman looks like now because I haven't played Vintage since the restrictions, but I bet it looks like this?

3 Force of Will
4 Mana Drain
2 Flusterstorm
1 Brainstorm
1 Ponder
1 Thirst for Knowledge
2 Fact or Fiction
2 Echoing Truth
2 Jace the Mindsculpter
3 Swords to Plowshares
2 Vendilion Clique
1 Snapcaster Mage
2 Salvagers
2 Trinket Mage
1 Time Walk
1 Ancestral Recall
8 SoLoMoxCrypt
1 Aether Spellbomb
1 Pithing Needle
1 Tormod's Crypt
2 Sensei's Divining Top

4 Tundras
4 Flooded Strand
2 Polluted Delta
5 Island
1 Plains
1 Tolarian Academy

Decks that are role flexible can exploit situations by adopting the optimal role.  Decks like Bomberman can play all three basic strategic modes in Magic (and each correlate role), which is pretty awesome if you are a good player that can suss out the optimal role in any given board state.

Which is why I play Miracles in legacy!
4  Eternal Formats / Blue-Based Control / Re: Why play Bomberman? (NE US) on: June 25, 2014, 08:36:51 pm
Back in the day I used to pilot this deck into a lot of top 4s in New England. To me, it was the answer to Slaver and all Gifts-based decks. This was before Wizards decided to go crazy with blue restrictions. The format had already adjusted to Gifts IMHO, but that's old news. Mindcensor and Trinket Mage for Tormod's Crypt was just amazing during that era.

Cool site. I think we just played! The game-play is a little slow, but it's a decent alternative to MWS on my mac.

8  Vintage Community Discussion / Community Introductions / Re: [BOSTON] Vintage on: June 06, 2010, 12:29:35 am
^^^ That was me man! What a fun deck, and great time to play vintage. I quit because I had too many responsibilities piling up at once. Now I have my life pulled together and I'm finding I have a little bit of extra time on my hands.
9  Vintage Community Discussion / Community Introductions / Re: [BOSTON] Vintage on: June 05, 2010, 06:02:49 am
I live in Brighton. I'm looking for people to play with. Some people may remember me. I was the greasy long haired douche-bag drummer who sported bomberman and gifts back in the day.  Very Happy I sold all my cards to support my Music Production and Engineering habit, so anyone with a deep card pool who wouldn't mind sharing, gets a hug from me!

charles scrubbys?! :O

Yes Sir

11  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: painter combo against salvagers: a tale of bomberman! on: July 20, 2008, 09:06:18 pm
I will always prefer Salvagers over the painter's combo for one big reason. AS is flat out better when you have reusable utility artifacts (even without a lotus) at your disposal.
12  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / TMD Open 12- Day 1 Top 16 Report on: February 21, 2008, 07:00:56 pm
This Stratfordbury was special, due to the fact it was planned as my farewell to magic. I've got a fledgling career to worry about, and I can't have any misused weekends. Once I'm financially stable I may return to the game. But for now, I can't squeeze it in. I'm not fond of long openings, so I'll cut right to the chase.

I have Dubbed the "FISHERMAN"

Maindeck:

4 Trinket Mage
3 Jotun Grunt
3 Auriok Salvagers
1 Ninja of the Deep Hours (AMAZING ALL DAY!)
4 Brainstorm
4 Mana Drain
4 Force of Will
2 Mana Leak
3 Repeal
1 Time Walk
1 Ancestral Recall
4 Swords to Plowshares (I'd like to congratulate my friend Ryan Marek. He was right. Best call ever.)
2 Spellbomb (I think running only 1 is a bad call)
1 Engineered Explosives
1 Sensei's Divining Top
5 Moxen
1 Lotus
1 Sol Ring
4 Flooded Strand
1 Polluted Delta
3 Tundra
5 Islands
1 Plains
1 Strip Mine (Never leave home without it.)

Side:

4 Meddling Mage
3 Kataki
4 Seal of Cleansing (Seems I was right about Oath making a showing.)
3 Trickbind (Seems I wasn't.)
1 Tormod's Crypt

Round 1 - Goblins

Game 1 he gets an early lackey and pile driver. I fight to stay ahead of fast beats. Grunt and swords go all the way here. Ninja bounces a grunt with a large number of counters, and I get a draw engine that's protected by removal and bounce.

Game 2 goes down the wire. He has a very early lackey into siege-gang, I get a trinket mage out that blocks for several turns with repeal. Why he wasn't trying to kill him with siege-gang I haven't a clue. In the end I'm down to 2 life, he's tapped out, but I brainstorm into a combo win.

Round 2- Ichorid

Game 1 is a total blow out. He gets 2 bazaars onboard and I die very soon after.

Game 2 I side in trickbinds, a crypt, and seal of cleansing.
He keeps a hand without bazaar but he's playing mana ichorid and can deal. He gets a Leyline and chalice on the board. I'm in no position to combo, but grunt beats go all the way. I remember bouncing multiple chalices with repeal.

Game 3 My hand is as follows- Trinket Mage, Tormod's Crypt, Island, Strip, Trickbind, Emerald, Time Walk. Enough said.

Round 3 Shop Aggro

Game 1 I die to a Triskelion and welder. I share with my opponent the irony that I died to the creature my metal band is named after.

Unashamed band insert: http://www.myspace.com/triskelionmusic

Game 2 He starts out with a first turn Juggernaut, and I fire back with a blocking grunt. I deal with some guys with swords and seal. I finally I win with a lone Kataki. We laugh over the hilarity of my win. My opponent was a cool guy and I think this was my favorite match.

Game 3 I get a first turn Kataki, and win fairly quickly with the Salvagers Combo. Spectators are shocked by this "WhateverWorks" asks my opponent how I won and was surprised I was playing Bomberman. I was glad my odd build was enough to confuse a few and hoped my luck would continue a few more rounds.

Round 4- TKnaughts without the Naughts

Game 1 Repeal and Swords do the trick.

Game 2 Is very close. I kill his Goyfs with STP, he kills my guys with Smother. He sticks a confidant, and he starts drawing dead. I repeal is confidant, I draw into drain. Drain poofs his confidant. We go draw go for a while, but I'm able to set up a draw engine with Ninja.

Round 5- Tyrant Oath

Game 1 is slow and full of making decisions. I finally win with combo. He is surprised. He makes me go through the motions to see my creatures. He sees grunts and does the math.

Game 2  I Seal a quick Oath, and keep him off another one. I walk a tight rope swinging with creatures, but they go all the way. I end the game with 2 STP, 1 FoW, and 1 Drain in hand.

Round 6- Shay with Oath

I'm already a shoe in to top 16 and I feel like having a fun game vs Shay.

Game 1 After a ton of minor plays, I'm left with little of anything in my hand. I go guns a blazing with grunt facing an active oath. I have 2 Swords in hand, but they're not enough.

Game 2 I combo quickly after dealing with Oath. But there's a catch! He plays Brain Freeze. Oh well.

Round 7 I Draw

Record before Top 16:

5/1/1 in 5th

Top 16 Round 1 vs Travis

My loss was rather quick.

Game 1 What the hell is he playing??????????? I lose to 2 Duplicants and an active welder. GG

Game 2 I thought I had good side vs this monstrosity, but it seems I lose to Monkey Cage.  Sad

What a great day of magic. And that night is a bit of a hush hush. (CONSTANTLY ATTACK!!!) Had to be there.  Huge! props to Ray.

- Peace

We haven't recorded bass yet, but we're so happy with how it sounds thus far we want to share it with you. And there's enough low end from the rhythm guitars.

http://www.myspace.com/triskelionmusic

It should be the first song to load. "Vampeal"

Let me know what you think. We have a choppy ending, but that will be fixed asap.

Thanks for the kind words. My band has definately taken away much time from playing vintage, but it's well worth it.

As the pending energy crisis most of us are bound to witness in our lifetime draws closer, I've been thinking.

What will happen to the Middle East when their precious oil supply runs dry? Will it vanquish what little stability there exists in that region? How will this affect the rest of the world? Frankly, it has me worried.

Discuss!
17  Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Single Card Discussion] Bitter Ordeal on: April 11, 2007, 10:25:28 pm
I think Bitter Ordeal would be a great card for UWb Bomberman! Not only is it a good control card, but a win condition.
18  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Re: Interesting Card Draw on: March 11, 2007, 07:09:24 pm
Would you rather have it:

(Card Name) U
Sorcery
Discard a card.
Flashback- Draw 2 cards

But thats an Ancestral Recall off Queit Speculation!
19  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Interesting Card Draw on: March 11, 2007, 12:38:11 pm
(Card Name) U
Sorcery
Reveal your hand to target opponent. That player chooses a card from it. Discard that card.
Flashback- Draw 2 Cards.

I don't know if this would be too broken with cards like Quiet Speculation and Intuition, but I like the idea. Any Suggestions?

Would Black be a better color?

Bomberman FTW! Everyone seems to forget this deck exists.
23  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / New Time Walk on: February 06, 2007, 05:51:12 am
(Card Name)    2U
Sorcery
If at the end of your turn you control no creatures, take an extra turn.

Is this balanced? I think so. The only big reason for Time Walking is to have another attack step.
24  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Re: Seal of Will on: December 06, 2006, 12:37:55 am
Nonblue decks can play this version, that is a problem that needs addressing.

But what nonblue deck other than Ichorid would want to play a card that is dead 60% of the time? Besides, decks can play off color leylines. Beyond this, do you see any other problems?
25  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Re: Seal of Will on: December 05, 2006, 09:41:48 pm
Incidentally, Kai Budde's first submission for his Invitational Card was something like:

U
Enchantment
U, Sacrifice ~this~: Draw a card.
UU, Sacrifice ~this~: Counter target spell.

And that card was not printed.

Because that card is way better than Seal of Will. It's more reliable during the mid to late game. Seal of Will is only good on turn 0, or whenever you have 5 mana. Force of will can be used on every turn, granted that you have a pitchable blue card and you aren't at 1 life. Besides, Seal is a sorcery speed spell when hard cast. And don't forget it can be stifled.
26  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Re: Seal of Will on: December 05, 2006, 01:09:12 pm
Force of Will without the card disadvantage drawback? I would play this card in a heartbeat.

Even with just a 40% probability of having it in your opening hand?
27  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Re: Twisted Justice of Rakdos (Rav 2.0) on: December 05, 2006, 12:09:27 am
You are right, I misunderstood the card. I thought "whenever a source you control deals damage", so it would trigger off something like Char, for example. This should cost 4 mana, I think. Alternatively, I could make:

{R} {B}
Rakdos' Perversion
Enchantment
Whenever a non-land source you control causes you to lose life, Rakdos' Perversion deals an equal amount of damage to target creature or player.

It would be funny with a lot of black cards like Grinning Demon and some red cards like Char.

Forget Char and Grinning Demon, think Necropotence, Spoils of the Vault, and Bargain.
28  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Seal of Will on: December 04, 2006, 03:16:18 pm
Seal of Will      3UU
Enchantment
If Seal of Will is in your opening hand, you may begin the game with it in play.
Sacrifice Seal of Will: counter target spell.

WotC hasn't printed any "turn 0" counters in a while. Its pretty weak unless its in your opening, so I believe its balanced. I don't think it would see much play in Vintage except in Ichorid.

Current Wording
Seal of Will      3UU
Enchantment
If Seal of Will is in your opening hand, you may begin the game with it in play.
Sacrifice Seal of Will: counter target spell.
29  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / Re: A "Win Card" on: November 09, 2006, 08:05:09 pm
Is this better?

Card Name   5
Artifact
When "Card Name" comes into play, remove all cards in graveyards with flashback from the game.
Spells from hands cost an additional 10 to play.
If an opponent resolves a spell, you lose the game.
If you resolve a spell, you win the game.
30  Vintage Community Discussion / Card Creation Forum / A "Win Card" on: November 09, 2006, 01:42:19 am
When I first saw the Suspend mechanic I tried to find some way to make it broken. Not finding anything, this card came to mind.

Card Name   5
Artifact
When "Card Name" comes into play, remove all graveyards from the game.
Spells from hands cost an additional 10 to play.
If an opponent plays a spell you lose the game.
If you play a spell, you win the game.

Darksteel Colossus is easier to play! Very Happy
