1  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: Help wanted on Workshop Aggro deck on: December 14, 2005, 10:37:21 am
Hi,

A workshop aggro deck is just perfect to fit in a Crucible/Waste or Strip lock. Therefore, I'm curious why do you choose to play with the Ankh's?
Although Ground Seals are great against some of the other decks out there, fitting in Welders yourself really strenghtens any Workshop aggro, in my opinion anyway.
Fabricates were very nice in the MaskNought deck by Eric Miller, when Trinisphere was still unrestricted. What's your experience with them, because to me they seem too slow..

The Defense Grid looks a bit lonely and somewhat random.. Maybe it would be more comfortable in the SB? The Jester's Cap is nice, but again: only one copy? I really like the Lightning Greaves; they speed things up and protect your precious critters..

Instead of the Platinum Angels (can be easily destroyed, although Lightning Greaves provides a safe haven obviously) I propably would choose Duplicants over them in the main deck. Fetching them with a resolved Intuition, combined with an active Welder, eats the nasty critters Oath runs.
Also, instead of Sphere of Resistance, I think Chalices fit better in a Workshop aggro list. Chalice on 1 against TPS and on 2 against Oath seem pretty solid

So now we need to find another tournament to try out funny things.

Teun said he probably was continuing organizing vintage tournaments, but instead of Castricum he wants to settle in Amsterdam.. So hopefully he succeeds and we'll still be playing against your fun decks in the future  Wink

It always was a very nice tournament in Castricum, too bad Teun (the judge) chooses to stop organizing it.. At least for now, maybe he keeps organizing Vintage tournaments in Amsterdam  Mr. Green

I played a Workshop aggro deck and didn't go so well, sadly..  Sad
It was extremely funny (although it was also somewhat tragic) to play against Koen. I actually died in game one due to several beats I received from a frickin' Confidant (yes, beatdown to the max  Surprised) combined with a small Tendrils.. None of my big fat critters ever saw the table, because he just kept throwing FoW's and Drains around

Some specific questions about choices can be helpful, I guess..

Number of Wastelands: I am running two in the list (and a Strip Mine), but I'm still wondering if that's enough or should I play 4 of them? And, if I should, what to cut for them? I don't want to lose my colored mana sources and I don't want to lose my City of Traitors (I think..)

SB choices: The last SB's I put together included this:

3 Chains of Mephistopheles (good against a lot of stuff, particularly heavy control decks)
3 Tormod's Crypt (I hope it's obvious in the current metagame why I included these.. although I am also considering Phyrexian Furnace.. any thoughts?)
3 Ray of Revelation (nice against Oath (although the last time I played against Oath, I didn't get to play ONE  Confused), Bazaar/Replenish, but also to react on the SB choices of your opponent (like Energy Fux, Serenity or main deck problems like Blood Moons))
2 Swords to Plowhares (good against creature-based decks of course, but also Oath, mirror matches etc)

From this point on, I'm not sure what to add in my SB. Pithing Needle is very hot at the moment of course, but I'm also considering Triskelions, Duplicants, Jester's Cap, Chalice of the Void and Umezawa's Jitte... All of the cards are good in a certain metagame...

EDIT: I forgot I'd made a change in the list:

-1 City of Brass or -1 Lightning Greaves (I'm still not sure, because sometimes I'm short on colored mana sources)
+1 Trinisphere (a first turn Trini is still very strong and an Intuition into Strip Mine, Crucible, Trini with an active Welder in play seems pretty good too)

Any comments?

For some time now I’m playing a Workshop Aggro deck (which I called Brownies, after the color artifacts used to have) and, even without great results (one t8 in a very small tournament shouldn’t count for much  Wink), I am curious about your opinions on some cards I included. There are many choices inspired by other available lists, so I’m not stating there’s very much new tech in here or something, but hopefully I can gather some useful tips…  Very Happy

The list:

1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Pearl
1 Sol Ring
1 Mana Vault
1 Mana Crypt
1 Darksteel Ingot
2 Gilded Lotus

4 Mishra’s Workshop
4 Gemstone Mine
4 City of Brass
2 City of Traitors
2 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine
1 Tolarian Academy

4 Juggernaut
1 Platinum angel
1 Memnarch
2 Sundering Titan
1 Karn, Silver Golem
4 Goblin Welder

2 Lightning Greaves
2 Crucible of Worlds
4 Thirst for Knowledge
3 Intuition
1 Memory Jar
1 Time Walk
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Tinker
1 Yawgmoth’s Will
1 Demonic Tutor

Lightning Greaves: I found it very powerful in the matches it was in play. It can win you the game sooner then you normally would (because of the haste ability) and, maybe even more important, it protects your creatures (a protected Welder, Memnarch or Platinum Angel is very nice)

Darksteel Ingot: I thought I saw it in a list of Travis LaPlante. It’s a any-color mana source, comes off a MWS and is indestructible – that's nice combined with Karn for example. Also, a start with MWS, Ingot, Welder, go is not that bad at all

Yawgmoth’s Will: I wanted this one because I sometimes found myself in situations in which I can cast an Intuition into 2 cards that would mean I could win the game, but not a third. This is not the only reason to include one of the best cards in the game, of course  Mr. Green

City of Traitors: This mana source gives in most cases a great advantage (tempo) in my opinion. A first turn Welder followed by a second turn Thirst or Intuition (into Titan, Titan, Karn for example) from a City of Traitors is just great.

I am considering adding Umezawa’s Jitte to the list, although I’m not sure what to cut for it. I played it last tournament (Castricum, The Netherlands) and it was awesome there (playing against Goblins, Rootwalla’s and Mongrels)

I hope you guys can give me some stuff to think about, cards to consider or point out flaws in the list or the card discussed above. Thanks!

Tinker Colossus is cute, but nothing more than that. It's a fast win condition, but not needed in this deck.

After (winning) game 1 with Leviat.dec, your opponent will probably board out all or most creature kill. With the Tinker into DSC - game plan you have an alternative winning condition. I think that's is more than cute  Very Happy

I guess that the new bomb Pithing Needle deserves the title best deck hoser   Mr. Green

VS. TPS:
Chalice of the void set at 0 (first turn) or 1
Orim's chant
Null rod

Rack and ruin is solid against for instance stax and other artifact heavy decks, same for energy flux.

And what about Chains of Mephistopheles against TPS? Without the draw-7's they'll probably won't go off, isn't?

Most decks with any kind of graveyard manipulation (also a LOT in tournament play today) don't like the good old Tormod's Crypt
11  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: [Discussion] Best deck hosers on: May 27, 2005, 05:49:38 am
Obviously, the best deck hosers against the top Vintage decks depends on the deck you're playing yourself. Also, a lot of different decks are good at the moment, so choosing your hosers is a search for the cards to do well against decks you have a unfavorable match up against. For TPS and control decks you've got to love Chains of Mephistopheles  Very Happy
