The bottom line is that judges should be able to pull the "poor-sportmanship" card.
Beware: next opponent to storm me to death, to give me a smile full of compassion (and relief)... and, who will eventually ask me out of courtesy: "fluster?... Trap?..."
I will say to you with a smug look on my face: "no, but thanks for passing priority. A real bummer you didn't actually announce your storm trigger".
Yeah, that will go well. Good MTG skills and the best is that the judge will be powerless.
Just untill the day your opponent asks for stifle

Somehow I had an error during sideboarding today. I was playing a legacy 2 man with UB reanimator. I lost game 1 and went to sideboarding. As I was choosing what to board out I had a bit of lag. During the procces of boarding out I somehow got a 5th carefull study in my sideboard (was trying to board 4 of them out) and had 61 cards in my main deck... Result was that if I submitted my deck it just went back to sideboarding because the sideboarding was illegal somehow. So I tried boarding another card out to get to 60. Still no result.
As a result I had to play game 2 unboarded because time was up b4 an ORC could help me with the problem. Naturally my opponent started t1 with a cage for which i have no answers b4 boarding essentially i just lost to the sideboarding error I could do nothing about.

Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Deck lists from 6/21

Sure there were no deck lists but i should have the 75 memorized at this point:
4 Scalding Tarn 1 Polluted Delta 1 Misty Rainforest 3 Underground Sea 3 Tropical Island 1 Tolarian Academy 1 Strip Mine 1 Island 4 Mox (cant remember if I cut Pearl or Emerald) 1 Lotus 1 Sol Ring 1 Mana Crypt 1 Top 1 Time Vault 1 Key 1 Nihil Spellbomb 2 Goblin Welder 2 Baleful Strix 2 Snapcaster Mage 1 Myr Battlesphere 2 Dack Fayden 1 Tezzeret, The Seeker 4 Force of Will 2 Lightning Bolt 2 Thoughtseize 2 Mana Drain 2 Mental Misstep 1 Recall 1 Time Walk 1 Tinker 1 Brainstorm 1 Yawgmoth's Will 1 Demonic Tutor 1 Vampiric Tutor 1 Hurkyls Recall 1 Mystical Tutor 1 Thirst for Knowledge 1 Gifts Ungiven 1 KERANOS, GOD OF STORMS
4 Grafdiggers Cage 3 Ingot Chewer 1 Crucible of worlds 1 Nihil Spellbomb 2 Toxic Deluge 1 Flusterstorm 1 Misdirection 1 Sower of Temptation 1 Engineered Explosives
Ill probably do a write up in the blue area about both days my choices on cards and stuff. I went 4-3 yesterday but had a round 6 win and in that came down to the last possible sequence of events. Yes Keranos, God of Storms is real, he was freaking amazing, No I don't miss Jace. The difference between yesterday and today was no spellbomb in the main, all 5 mox, only 3 cages in the board, no Sower/EE or Misdirection, instead 2 Engineered Plagues and 1 Izzet Staticcaster which also did work all day yesterday.
Quick edit: Without me going through my notes, I won Round 1 Vs Bomberman. Lost Round two Vs Martello with Roland Chang at the helm. Won round three vs BuG control. Beat Goblins round 4 ( a good friend of mine was paired up to me, offered to scoop but we still played it out). Round 5 ID with Justin Kohler ( We played 3 I think i got it 2-1 with Welder being the MVP). Top 8: I played against Esper Tezz round 1 (when I do a full write up ill talk about this, most insane game of magic I have ever played) Top 4 I got to redeem my one loss on the day to Roland Chang. In the finals I played Mike R. on Oath and that was the day.
I take the tropicals are actually volcanics right?

Why do you play banishing light instead of o-ring? Are you worried that your opponent will bounce his only target to force you to kill your own permanent?
I can see situations where with leyline of anticipation is online and your opponent plays reverrent silence (or somthing like it) where you can use O-ring to save a permanent in resp for instance.

Blue affinity with modular anyone?
put a ton of counters on ravager, sac, put a bunch of counters on this guy.....take many turns. Repeat.
Just the fact that sage is not an artifact creature makes this not work. Also you can only get 1 turn each time with ravager (if it would even work) since the ability states you have to remove all counters at once for activating it. Edit: Misread the part where the card stats 'For each five'. Still this does not change that ravager can only put counters on an artifact creature.

Yeah, Survival probably should not have been banned. But, now that it is, we have this really bizarre situation where Survival (not played in any format) sells for just as much as Oath of Druids (Vintage staple).
Why do you price inertia, casual players?
I think this has to do with commander being so popular where survival is just a bomb as in it is multiple tutors in 1 card.

It's worth investigating, I suppose. Most standout Modern/Legacy/Standard cards turn out to be Vintage playable on some level once the initial reluctance wears off.
Some cards make there way in. Rarely does an entire combo though. Survival of the fittest was a graveyard based archetype that demolished legacy for the better part of a year. We have yet to see anything come of that so I don't think a weaker graveyard based combo is really going to cut it. Id of course be happy to be wrong, but he needs to play the deck first... Survival only demolished legacy because nobody in the US actually played hate for it main. In Europe it never took off quite that much. Another thing that might have worked against Survival in Europe was that in Europe people played more combo as well which had quite the good MU in the pairing against survival...

Is Krosan Grip even playable against shops? even through spheres etc? I always thought that CMC3 is hard to cast when playing against shops.

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Can I interrupt the Dragon combo with Nature's claim?
|
on: August 02, 2013, 06:07:20 am
|
|
The situation is as following:
My opponent has bazaar and a land in play.
I play Show and Tell and put Griselbrand into play. My opponent puts Animate Dead into play of Show targeting the Worldgorger Dragon in his grave.
In response to the animate trigger I draw 14 cards of Griselbrand including Natures Claim and a couple of FOW+bue cards.
My opponent asks if the animate trigger resolves, and because I have no green mana open (but do have lands capable of producing green mana) I say that it resolves.
After the first cycle of the combo I say I want to respond to the Dragon Trigger by useing Natures Claim on the animate dead. My opponent tells me that that won't do any good, but as far as I believe this stops the combo right there and then.
So what happens?
Thank you for the information.

Probably that will not be in Theros since a variant of Elspeth will be in there (don't know if the one every one is talking about on the source is real or fake, but elspeth was confirmed if not what it did).

Infinite life doesn't beat Jace, the Mind Sculptor.
Yes it does not, but if you can combo out to infinate life you have 3 creatures in play. Jace usually does not survive that easily since you had no removal in the first place else the combo would have no occurred in the first place.

I'm Glad to hear Steve quite well in this podcast! Although I know this is a review from a Vintage viewpoint, I'd like to point that barrage of expendables is an immediate improvement over goblin bombardment. Even the cost reduction, that may not be enough to pass the Legacy barrier.
No that is not true. Goblin bombardment does not require you to pay each time you activate it. Barrage of Expendables does require for each activation.

I had forgotten about that guy. It's great for an aggro deck (altought I'm biased to control red). Bolts will hit more easily (countering them is 2 damage nevertheless).
While painter is nice, most sorceries/instants are already blue, and some white like swords. With painter your own bolts would deal damage to you, and you would affect black discarders/tutors and little more.
These combines nicely with Tovolar's Magehunter in the blue matchup: if you want to concat spells you are going to have a bad time. Pyrostatic pillar/spellshock also punish playing spells for fun.
Magus seems a good idea since he also helps preventing opponent playing spells. It's not a hard lock at all, but an aggressive soft one. This card improves blue match, but against mud, dredge or oath is pretty bad. With magus of the moon some pairings are improved. Smash to smithereens is advised (direct damage while breaking vault/moxen/mud cards, or even killing a jace). Grafdigger's cage also helps, but is no offensive at all.
At the end it's a kind of midrange deck with lots of blanks... still I like the card
What a whole crap I have written... sorry for the low quality post
It does not affect your spells at all. It says 'Whenever an opponent casts a white or blue instant or sorcery spell'...

You guys should do the live casts for Vintage at BoM. This way, I can lend your power and win the tourney with Humans. I like how it was long, I watched it in 2 waves. Just saw it as 2 podcasts, nothing problematic about that. So, you talked about Loa again, and on top used Cavern of Souls as a semi answer. Interesting, but the problem still remains, with full acceleration and access to cheap removal spells like Lightning Bolt, it is relatively easy to get rid of Thalia or Dark Confidant and still stay in range of the '7 cards in hand condition' to get more draws of Library. Misdirection and Mindbreak Trap are actually very strong against Abrupt Decay. They protect your crucible, a Decay target, for example. That being said, I agree on a point; Not always would multiple library in hand be a good thing, or missing a colored land drop. But even one Sapphire/Ruby or Black Lotus change/swing that in favor of the Loa user. It is not hard to get ahead and stay ahead with a Loa, if the opponent didn't get a wasteland and you get a bolt (rather common isn't it?). So you guys think this should be allowed? A single land to take over the game very early on. I think another problem is, while a player is taking advantage of a Loa, the player is also building towards a Jace (because Loa also gives mana don't forget that) and once Jace is in play, plus the assumption you probably used some removal on their threats, while drawing cards, it becomes really hard to do anything really. It is NOT easy to fight a land, even as a wasteland deck, with so much potential power on it. It is unforgiving and extremely efficient in what it does if not taken care of. And even if you wasteland it (the second option to fight it, next to trying to play threats (which can easily be removed)), they could just play another one. Also if they get to use it before you wasteland, they just started the game with +1 card. Oh well, these are my 2 cents on this Loa matter. On Aether Vial: The Cavern of Souls pretty much replaced Vial. Sure Vial still has its own advantages, but Cavern is such a boost, you get a land drop, the uncounterable effect, and this is pretty much enough. Vial can come online the next turn for Gorilla Shaman or Deathrite Shaman but it is nowere near the Cavern+Mox into 2cc Human bomb. The strenght of some of these creature decks running Caverns is to throw in a couple high quality cheap bears very early on and put the pressure on them. Vial doesn't follow this approach. And that brings me to the real issue, topdecking a vial after turn 2. It is still playable, don't get me wrong, but you get so much more mileage out of a turn 1 Vial. The difference with a later Vial is huge, and this offsets me. There are some exceptions to this though, against a Magus of the Moon deck for example, it could get you out of a lock. Or a Chalice for 2. But these are rather narrow circumstances. How does vial get you out of a chalice lock where Cavern wouldn't?

Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Slivers
|
on: May 24, 2013, 02:53:35 am

I threw a list together, it's probably not that good, but it has an "oops I win" combo in it that people won't see coming:
Mana: 4 Cavern of Souls 4 City of Brass 4 Gemstone Mine 4 Wasteland Strip Mine Black Lotus Mox Sapphire Mox Jet Mox Emerald Mox Ruby Mox Pearl Lotus Petal
Slivers: 4 Gemhide Sliver 4 Heart Sliver Anthems: 4 Predator Sliver 4 Muscle Sliver 4 Sinew Sliver Utility: 4 Harmonic Sliver Combo: 4 Sliver Queen 4 Basal Sliver 4 Training Grounds
The sideboard is undecided, but the Combo seems viable. Allow me to explain it:
You get a Sliver Queen into play and a Training Grounds into play, Queen's ability now costs 1 mana. Basal Sliver allows you to sacrifice the token to create BB, use one to make a token, make infinite mana, regardless of Sphere Effects, make infinite Slivers, and if there is a Heart Sliver out GG!
People may say how Sliver Queen in Vintage? 5 mana? It's not that hard with Gemhide Sliver. Another thing to note is Gemhide Sliver cannot be Phyrexian Revokered!
The Sideboard could probably have Stony Silence, Essence Sliver, Darkheart Sliver, Tormod's Crypt, Energy Flux, etc. only time will tell.
U don't even need the training grounds for the combo. If u have haste sliver + gemhide + basal + queen you have infinate mana and slivers. (Pay 2 to make a sliver token, tap for 1 mana of any colour with gemhide, sac with basal for 2 black mana, pay two black for new sliver and repeat till u have enough to go letal with).
