Also if people were looking for a new format then 4cb wouldnt seem to bad and there would be more diversity. We had that for a month or two, as combo_dude switched from 3CB to 4CB, but the interest didn't seem to be there. I wouldn't read too much into the low numbers. IIRC, that was a bit of a dead period for 3CB as well, with very low turnouts. Probably better if 4CB is run as an occassionl alternative to 3CB, not in addition to it.

And the whole turnout thing baffles me. What was different this time versus the last two? One would expect that the first time a new format is tried, it draws plenty of interest, which dies down after a couple of events. Instead, the opposite happens.
Maybe people like to have a metagame to aim at, rather than trying to create a deck in a vacuum.

As a side note, the Smallpox deck listed here would likely have done better if the Bog was replaced by a Lotus, since I can see at least 6 points it would have gained.
Yeah, I had to submit my deck at the last minute, made a impulsive decision to play Smallpox, and then forget I could play Black Lotus. I should have stuck with my original instinct - which was to play Trinisphere.

I only actually heard about this incident second-hand, but I thought that going on about how you were 'being nice' under those circumstances was a bit rude. I'm really interested to know what the official answer is, because I've asked around and noone has a clear one yet (#mtgjudge was quiet). By the letter of the law, it seems to me that A's creature should die. However, to me it's a case for a judges to use their own intelligence and go by player intent - if A wanted to not pay the echo for some reason, he obviously would have sacrificed the creature. Thus his failiure to do so implies that he was paying the echo. I think that modern judging is supposed to work along these lines, and would be ruled in player A's favour. And probably B deserves a warning for unsporting conduct as well. A quick look through the article titles on the DCI judging pages found the following: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=judge/article/20041220a

I'd like to congratulate combo_dude and BweeBwee as the winners of 3CB #80!I'd like to deride myself for being an idiot and submitting Oblation instead of something can target lands, costing me 10 points! Results:

I had a go at reworking the results, based on all the above comments. Hopefully it's correct, there were a lot of changes...

OK, I'll recalculate that and let people know tomorrow what results change. Sorry for forgetting that.
As an aside, the real reason that the 14 vs. 17 match is actually 6-0 to the Vindicate deck is that in order to keep Scavenger alive, you need to keep playing spells. If you can't cast Oblation on anything, you need to burn for 3 with the Lotus to keep Scavenger alive - with the Factory beating down, 17 dies long before 14.
Adam
Ah, in that case I can repeatedly cast Oblation on the Black Lotus (announce Oblation targetting the Black Lotus, then sac the Lotus for mana afterwards). So in that case we tie 2-2.

I'm not sure I did win with the Oblation tech - I think you forgot it can't target lands in some matchups. 5. BweeBwee - (no name) - Hollow Trees, Crush of Wurms, Maze of Ith Maze of Ith holds me off while BweeBwee saves up 21 mana to cast and flashback Crush of Wurms in the same turn. I have no answer to six 6/6 tokens. Result: lose 6-0 14. Franz Ferdinand - No More Lotus! - Orzhov Basilica, Mishra's Factory, Vindicate I have no way of preventing my Anurid Scavenger from being Vindicated. Result: lose 6-0[/s] Edit: saved by protection from Black - I totally forgot about that 15. BweeBwee - (no name) - Mercadian Bazaar, (Basic Land)**, Maze of Ith Maze of Ith again. Result 2-2. 7. Parallax - Damned if you do... - Black Lotus, Glowrider, Rishadan Cutpurse I can get a draw out of this matchup when I play as follows: play the Lotus and then pass the turn. If Parallax were to cast the Glowrider I just trump it with my Scavenger, so that's out, and if he plays the Cutpurse I respond by sac'ing the Lotus for mana and then cast Oblation on the Cutpurse. Result: lose 4-1. I wasn't convinced the Oblation tech was worthwile (if the tournement had run for another day I probably would have changed the deck), so I'm pretty happy with the high finish, even if I didn't win. Would have been nice if the Rakdos decks had taken the win though.

I was also very pleased to see Hi-Val's deck do well, as it finished high despite having no less than five fewer e's than the average number (which is, to the nearest whole number, eleven per deck...). At least we now know why The Rack is usually banned! This is why I found the format so interesting.. you can build some very strong regular 3CB decks with around 7 or 8 Es that will 6-0 almost all the decks that go for high E counts. I was surprised only Hi-Val and I adopted that plan (my excuse being I am far too lazy/busy/unimaginative to find all these cards with lots of Es). Anyway we should run this format again sometime (possibly with minor rules/banned changes), there are still lots of decks out there. Of the 8 decks I was considering entering nobody entered any of them, apart from Hi-Val who also played Vineyard. Now maybe that is cause they weren't good decks , but my point is there is lots more room for expirementation out there.

1.  combo_dude  -  The Great White Hope  -  Mox Pearl,  Mishra's Factory,  Kataki, War's Wage 11.  Scrappy Kid  -  Appiness is playing 1/1s  -  Undiscovered Paradise,  Stormscape Apprentice,  Elvish Scrapper Or you can do it easy way, just destroy the Mox with Scrapper when he plays it. Still, same result. ??? If I destroy the Mox that leaves my 1/1 against a 2/1, and I have nothing better to do than tap it every turn and draw.

To me, the Hunted Horror deck looks like it could be really strong - it's unfortunate that it came up against a sea of Workshop decks, which tend to have too high a CMC to be affected by Keg. The problem with the Horror deck is that you have to use your Keg to destroy the free tokens you've given them, so that in all the deck does is make a 7/7 trampler. In effect it's just a bad version of Masknaught (unless everybody is running artifact removal). It really needs an Energy Field style card that hold off the tokens and the opponents stuff at the same time. To reciprocate your kind praise, I like the idea of playing Kataki (apologies if somebody else thought of this first, I don't remember seeing Kataki played before). It's just a shame that our innovative decks finished 8th & 10th

One part of this sentence isn't actually true (you can play all five basic land types). You can? The rules don't say that anywhere, and all cards without an 'e' in their name seems quite explicit to me. Island, Plains, Swamp, Mountain don't have an 'e' between them, so I assumed they were banned.
You need to apply a little lateral thinking. Try a Gatherer search on Ice Age Lands

This format is cool. No Workshop or Factory, the only basic land is Forest, and the only non-legal Mox is Ruby . I love it! One part of this sentence isn't actually true (you can play all five basic land types). Edit: Energy field is fine. Better to start a new format with a small banned list anyway. This format seems good for more than one 3cb ,so we can always ban more cards next time if necessary.

I think a couple of my results are wrong, though one is complicated: 1.  combo_dude  -  The Great White Hope  -  Mox Pearl,  Mishra's Factory,  Kataki, War's Wage 11.  Scrappy Kid  -  Appiness is playing 1/1s  -  Undiscovered Paradise,  Stormscape Apprentice,  Elvish Scrapper I drop both my 1/1s. Now if combo_dude doesn't play Kataki, I win by destroying the Factory if he ever animates it. If he doesn't animate the Factory and try to attack me, I can just ping him twenty times. Therefore he has to play Kataki. The upkeep cost prevents him from ever animating the Factory (or if he does he has to tap it), and I can just tap Kataki every turn and attack with the Scrapper twenty times. Result: 6-0 to me. 4.  Gimbles  -  Wheels on the Bus  -  Mishra's Workshop,  Wheel of Torture,  Ensnaring Bridge What is to stop me destroying the Wheel of Torture with my Scrapper and then pinging him twenty times with the Apprentice? Result : 6-0 to me. If I'm correct thats enough points to send my valiant 1/1s up to second! And by having artifact removal I deny Gimble the Mise Prize. Sorry Gimble

More decks would be good...c'mon guys, did my plea for promptness sound that aggressive? If I submit decks too early I find the wait for the results too annoying. I prefer to forget about 3cb for a couple of weeks then submit decks a few days before the deadline. Sorry. Any idea when we'll get the results for #67 ?

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Lore Broker & Madness
|
on: November 09, 2005, 10:20:52 am
|
I need to check the way Madness interacts with Lore Broker (tap: both players draw and discard a card) when both players are playing Madness cards.
At the end of the opponents go I activate Lore Broker, he discards Circular Logic, I discard Arrogant Wurm. Both of us have madness triggers. He is the active player, so his is put on the stack first, then mine on top. Arrogant Wurm's madness resolves. I can then cast Arrogant Wurm before the madness on the Circular Logic has resolved.
Alternativerly the same scenario, but this time it is my main phase. This time the Madness of Circular Logic resolves first. But the madness of my Arrogant Wurm won't resolve afterwards until both players pass on an empty stack, and once he passes priority he can no longer cast Circular Logic.
In both cases the Arrogant Wurm resolves successfully.
Any mistakes in any of the above?

3.  Discozombie  -  Little Green Men  -  Rushwood Grove,  Verdant Force,  Rushwood Grove 4.  Scrappy Kid  -  Skies  -  Mox Sapphire,  Mishra's Factory,  Spiketail Hatchling I think this should be 3-3 not 6-0 If I'm playing I win as follows: T1: I drop Hatchling, he plays land T2: I attack (17), he plays second land (1 counter) T3: I attack (14), ha taps both land (3 counters) T4: Attack (11), 5 Counters T5: Attack (8), 7 Counters T6: Attack (5) 9 Counters T7: Attack (2) he resolves Verdant Force T8: Attack with Spiketail Hatchling (1), he attacks for some number less than 20 T9 Attack with Spiketail (0) When he plays he drops Verdant Force on 5 life and wins.

Oh, and one other thing: you'll see why after the results, but I am amending the banned list - UNHINGED IS ALSO BANNED. As of 66, nothing silver-bordered, please! Treetop Village, Vineyard, Form of the Squirrel ??  Oh my god, if unhinged is legal you can play R&D's Secret Lair... presumably that can be broken somehow

Had a change in result (2 vs. 3 should be 3-3, not 6-6) pointed out to me via PM - we have myself and wicketsnatcher as joint winners!
Did I PM about the 2 vs 9 matchup as well? I think that is 3-3 for the same reason (Bears can endlessly block the Leveller when playing). Edit: I did realise this was wrong, but I see I didn't get back in time to edit it before anybody read it.Â

Nice. Precisely what I wanted to see. Here's my attempt at an uncommon Madness build:
I needed a decent Madness outlet besides Bazaar. Try Merfolk Looter , Compulsion or Zombie Infestation maybe. If you're going to play with Windfall you probably want more Threshold cards than Madness - Nimble Mongoose, Setons Scout and Centaur Chieftain are all good.
