Nice top8. I cut Stifle from my Noble Fish list recently as well and never looked back. Having access to Swords, Spierces and Dazes seem to be the way to go - at least in our meta. Stifle is nice and I loved, how many uses it can provide. But its effects doesn't seem strong enough in the moment. You very often just stifle an Oath or even a Confidant Trigger instead of just countering the beast or removing it.
Yes, those swords and dazes are certainly bothersome and lost me my place in the final, but Qasali is truly the bane of my life at the minute (I'm the mono-red aggro stax player). I'll probably pack the fourth Razormane for the next tournament given the metagame breakdown. In any event, enough fraternising with "the enemy".

Thank you for the lists. I am loving that TPS list with 2 Tendrils and no Big artifact creature. How many people were at this?
Sadly, only 16: the first tournament of the recently launched league fell right in the middle of the university exam period, so a lot of the regulars couldn't make it. Our numbers are normally 20-30. That said, some of the players on the list number amongst the very best Spain has to offer.

Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: [New Card Discussion] Lodestone Golem
|
on: January 28, 2010, 11:18:14 am

In a Lodestone Golem related front, I am still debating on which shop deck he is more suited for, MUD or Aggroshop? My concern with using him in MUD is getting hated out by things like Null Rod, though I admit it has been some months since I have had the opportunity to play in a Vintage Tournament.
Also, is it realistic to play 13 sphere effects in a deck, or are you going overboard? Would it be best to just substitue some of your existing "spheres" with a golem?
I'm for slotting him into my Shop Aggro, in place of Juggernaut and along with Sculpting Steel, which, a great defence against Sphinx and Leviathan, now allows me to copy 5/3's with sphere-like effects: we'll see how it works out. As far as fearing Null Rod goes, I run them main deck and the more recent MUD decks I've seen have dropped Metalworker and included Null Rod: there are just too many decks running Vault combo these days...

I was the Shop Aggro player in the Top 8 (and apparently the entire tournament, for that matter). Here is how my swiss pairings went:
Rd 1 - Landstill (1-0, he started the round with a game loss) Rd 2 - CB Top (2-0) Rd 3 - Tezz (1-2) (5 Hour Energy was consumed at this point. Bad Idea.) Rd 4 - GW (2-1) Rd 5 - TPS (0-2) Rd 6 - Tezz (2-0) Rd 7 - 5C Stax (2-1)
Props Nick Coss, for holding amazing tournaments D3G, especially Steve and Jeff, for our presence in the Top 8 Mark Hornung, for making the trip with me, and for winning the whole thing! Craig Berry, who needs all the props he can get
Slops The Dewey Decimal System
Well done, sir! It's good to see that mono-red shop can still make it, even if things have become increasingly difficult in the current metagame.

The conception that Qasali Pridemage is somehow the reason for Shop Aggro's abmysal perfomance actually kind of puzzles me, especially now that damage on the stack is gone. It's just a 1 for 1 trade, I mean it's a good card against Shop Aggro, but not earth shattering or anything.
One of the reason is that people are still obsessed with Juggernaut, which is just a bad card. Another reason is that some people still fail to see how insanely good Karn is, this is your cardadvantage. Turning all your lock permanents into beaters and killing all their Moxen can sometimes easily be like a 5 for 1.
Karn has lost a lot of strength in a metagame dominated by Null Rod. Rather than considering Qasali in isolation, think of it in a deck with mana accelaration that hurts your sphere effects (Noble Hierarch) and in conjunction with Trygon Predator.

@Gandalf: I think the deck you list is best described as aggro MUD rather than Shop Aggro. The OP is interested in the aggro shop decks that do run welder as he clearly stated that they often include Magus of the Moon, so I think we are discussing the decks that appeared in response to GAT (i.e. Solemn Simulacrum, Triskelion, Welder, spheres...). That said, I agree with many of the points you make.
Mono-red Shop Aggro has lost a great deal of steam for a number of reasons:
1) As Gandalf points out, Oath is perhaps the biggest problem. Iona has encouraged many players to dust off their Oath decks. Iona is not particularly good against Aggro Shop decks, unless Oath is activated early on in the game, but she can win nevertheless. The problem with Oath arises post sideboard, when you are faced with Empyrial Archangel or Sphinx. Smokestack, should you choose to run it, often isn't quick enough to deal with these threats.
2) The appearance of Sphinx and Inkwell Leviathan, which cannot be targetted by Welder, have forced Shop players to include Sculpting Steel. Sculpting Steel is a good response to each of these cards, but without tutors, an early game Tinker often spells imminent defeat and Welder is no longer an answer.
3) As Smmenen points out, Pridemage can ruin your day.
4) The rise of Tezzeret and decks employing the Time Vault combo have forced Shop players to include Null Rod. Null Rod is undoubtedly the best artifact disruption in the current metagame; however, for Shop players, it comes at a high price and it can often hurt you as much as the opponent. The Shop decks require tweaking to include Null Rod and you can no longer run Triskelion. In any event, subsequent to the changes in combat, Triskelion is no longer a solution to Goyf and should probably be replaced by Razormane Masticore, but we can no longer weld Triskelion in and out of play to deal those final points of damage that make the difference between winning and losing.
5) Tezzeret players run enough islands to counteract any disruption caused by Magus of the Moon and Oath players often run a single forest for the same purpose.
6) Many Tezzeret/Oath decks include Tendrils as a second win condition, which means more Rebuild/Hurkyll's in the main deck. You can respond to this by including Red Elemental Blast in the Sideboard, but it often isn't enough.
Much to my regret, recent expansions have not given the Aggro Shop player many useable cards. The converse is true of the decks you are competing against and despite my best attempts to create a build that works, I think you have to strain too much to create a competitive Aggro Shop deck. Aggro Shop decks will continue to make top 8, but not as often as they did when we were facing GAT. Recent modifications to the rules (i.e. the reappearance of Time Vault and the increased use of Null Rod) have not helped matters. Hopefully, things will change when Worldwake appears, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

@ Gandalf and those sharing his oppinion: Of course I could be wrong, but I'm not convinced yet. Like Red Irish said "we'll have to agree to disagree" for now, as I don't think this issue can be resolved via discourse.
In any case it would be a shame if oath was restricted, as it would just kill another archetype.
This seems highly unlikely to me, at least for a long time... many more people would have to pick up Oath and start winning with it. As far as I know, Oath of Druids has won two tournaments with more than 33 players this entire YEAR (the April Blue Bell and the NYSE III), excluding Tezz decks with an Oath SB. Admittedly Iona Oath may change things, but has anyone besides me won a tournament with more than 33 players with Oath post-Zendikar? http://morphling.de/top8decks.php?id=1151I almost forgot winning that a few weeks back, thanks! Belated congratulations! Seriously, sorry about that, I had no idea it was you. In any event, I think we'll see more and more Iona Oath in upcoming T8's. Indeed, I'm a little concerned that Vintage will become a two-horse race between Tezzeret and Iona Oath decks.

@MirariKnight and Killane
We'll have to agree to disagree on this issue. I'm aware that my approach is single-minded, but I prefer to add cards to help me get Oath in play as quickly as possible rather than include the Vault combo. There are advantages and disadvantages when including or excluding a second win condition. I fully understand your position and I may be wrong. In any event, we can all agree that Iona has signalled the return of Oath.

The problem with Tendrils is that you need a successful oath with your library in the GY and a successful yawg cast. If all those peices have fallen in place, I dont know how you havnt won already with an abundance of mana and the entire library at your disposal. Its just seems like a winmore card to me.
I don't see the problem, with a single Iona and Krosan Reclamation you can ensure that all the pieces are where they need to be. Whilst you are right to point out that you need to successfully cast and activate Oath, I would still forego the Vault combo in favour of Tendrils/Krosan.

Oath has become dangerously powerful as a result of Iona. Is Iona the element that is making Oath so competitive or is it the addition of the Time Vault win condition? Cutting off an opponent from a color (especially Blue) is powerful. But, I question if Aggro beats with Iona would perform as well if Time Vault wasn't part of the equation. When Iona comes into play, it's basically game over: I activate Oath, you lose. A friend of mine runs Iona Oath with Tendrils and without Time Vault and I don't think Vault is necessary. Why do I need infinite turns if I can simply kill you in a single turn? In any event, it doesn't really matter whether you use the Vault combo or Tendrils post Iona - Iona wins. We can argue back and forth on the merits and disadvantages of each win condition, but the important thing to my mind is the opponent's inability to play spells of a given colour: it's like a Meddling Mage that names half the cards in your opponent's deck and I believe that it is primarily this that has given Oath a new lease of life.

The reason is that it makes you incredibly vulnerable. Iona herself is a 4 turn clock. It's nice that Iona is 7/7, but I think giving 4 turns is too much. I don't think you can rely on her to kill alone. If she does get removed, you're totally dead in the water. Hellkite reduces her clock and also wins on his own if you get him first. I think he's the best option although Tidespout seems good too.
Krosan reclamation + yawgmoth's will + tendrils and you can win on the turn after you activate the Oath, as you yourself stated in a previous post: after all, with Iona in play, your opponent is probably in no position to prevent the combo. Oath has become dangerously powerful as a result of Iona.

in my humble opinion, given the rise of Tezz/Drain decks, Null Rod is an obligatory inclusion.
My main point was that there is a big difference between trying to enter into a fully developed meta, and trying to gain rank in a developing meta. So where this person plays, they might not have anyone playing Tezz, and only a handful of people playing moxen. Like I was eluding to, if you are facing against Birds of Paradise Zoo 2 rounds out of 5 - you might want to consider other options. If this are really new, and most decks are mono-color running mostly basics - then Moon is awful. But I think its a good card to take advantage of a "Competative Meta without too many Moxen" where fetches and duals are going to be the backbone of most decks... and decks running full mox are few and farbetween. I agree with you, but without further information from the OP with regards to metagame, we are flying in the dark when offering advice. I think that if he decides to go with your Moon based build or Abdullah's Mud build, he won't go far wrong.

You need more red mana sources for the welders and the REB's in your SB:
include 6 mountains and 4 Solemn Simulacrums.
You should also consider including 2 Gorilla Shamans.
Leyline and Tormod's seems like overkill, why not 3 Tormod's and 3 Relic of Progenitus? I assume you are expecting a lot of dredge decks.
Including Welder and Metalworker has been done in the past, with some success, but you may be better going one route or the other (i.e. MUD or mono-red Stax). Abdullah's list above seems good, but you have not provided information on your metagame and if you are expecting a lot of Fish with Null Rod, you may want to reconsider playing mono-brown. I would include Masticore rather than Triskelion for this reason alone (unless you want to go the Ravager/Triskelion combo route).
I'm currently playing a variation of the deck Harlequin posted above, although without the Magus or Moon effects - in my humble opinion, given the rise of Tezz/Drain decks, Null Rod is an obligatory inclusion.

@Red Irish, Maybe that's the case for Spain... but I've played in France, Belgium and the Netherlands and all have sanctioned events along with proxy events. btw Eurovino was the biggest Vintage event last year and it was sanctioned IIRC. I'm co-hosting the only recurring 10 proxy event in the Netherlands (all others are sanctioned). I do think Europe sees a lot more Sanctioned Vintage then the US has seen in the past years. Also what Steve said is spot on, some of the biggest Vintage events (BoM, Eurovino) have been zero-proxy, put the low dollar price compared to the Euro with that fact and you have the reason why so much power is located in Europe.
You are right to point out that I am talking specifically about Spain. Perhaps the situation here differs from other European countries. I also agree with Steve's analysis of the motives behind the concentration of power in Europe.

@LHC, Bazaar of Moxen and Eurovino are both sanctioned events, although we have seen an increase in proxy events in Europe, it's more a exception then a rule for a event to allow proxies. For example; I got 2 Vintage events coming up in the next two weeks both of them don't allow proxies.
Once again, I beg to differ. In Spain, events that do not permit 10 proxies are by no means the norm. The two tournaments in Madrid this year and the tournament in Valencia last year, which are by far the largest vintage tournaments in recent history, all allowed proxies. Over the course of the last two years, I have played vintage at least once a month and I have never played in a tournament that did not permit 10 proxies.

Simple:
Most non-American tournaments are non-proxy, and the largest and most successful European tournaments are zero-proxy.
I beg to differ. I have been playing vintage for a few years in Spain and I have never attended a large tournament where proxies were not used. I believe that the Catalan Vintage league has banned proxies; however, they are the exception rather than the rule.

Is it my imagination or is the article understating how broad the combat changes are?
Triskelion, Goblin Welder + Artifact Creature, Arcbound Ravager, Umezawa's Jitte, and Icatian Javelineers seem to be substantially more limited to me just at first glance, in addition to Fanatic and Pridemage listed earlier. Who knows what else will be affected.
No, it is not your imagination.
