That's a beauty of a deck! I can't wait to test this out.

Can you explain some more how you played the deck and if there were any situations in which you've had some problems?

Have you ever thought about Dakra Mystic in combination with Spirit of the Labyrinth? It could provide a small draw-engine as you could draw a card in both of the turns for only {U}{Tap}, stops Mystical and Vampiric. But as I hadn't the chance to test this at all, I don't now if Dakra is good enough on its own (as your other creatures in the deck).

Congratulations on your succes and for brewing an interesting deck. I always like your kind of decks.

5  Eternal Formats / Blue-Based Control / Re: Planeswalker Control on: April 18, 2012, 10:03:00 am
- Have you thought about Hymn to Tourach?  Maybe it would be a good addition to liliana (as the opponent has to discard anyway) and jace (to start fateseal after some discard). Then you can also play either Tourach in your phase or Clique end of drawstep of your opp. But it isn't an instant..

- Could you imagine to play something like this after :

+2 Sensei's Divining Top
+4 Temporal Mastery

-2 Snapcaster Mage
-1 Vendilion Clique
-3 ??

Then you would get alot of eot -> extra turn for your planeswalker / bob. with 3 Top & 3 Jace the lifeloss should be fine (I hope)..

Thanks Mr. Mage this is huge. I love to watch those games especially against Mr. Shay Wink

Just as a thought, in this game here (epic  Very Happy) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ez6XvJus-Eo&feature=BFa&list=ULcL8wMybSZu0&lf=mfu_in_order

Rich is on 1 life and is fighting like an bear against the factory. You blocked the factory with your Snapcaster Mage to not die. BUT coudn't you've use your Voltaic Key to untap the factory each turn and maybe win with the Snapcaster Mage??  Wink
7  Eternal Formats / Blue-Based Control / Re: UG Landstill on: October 31, 2011, 03:11:45 am
You know that if you have a Standstill in play and your opponent is playing a spell and you cast Noxious Revival in response, the Standstill will trigger again and your opponent is drawing three cards.

Rule for Standstill:

It only works once. If someone casts another spell after it triggers, but before that trigger resolves, then it will trigger again. The first time one of these triggers resolves, it will be sacrificed for the full effect. Any additional triggers on the stack will do nothing when they resolve because you will be unable to sacrifice it additional times.

So it would look like this:

Bottom of stack
Opponent is casting a spell
Standstill triggers
You cast Noxious Revival
Standstill triggers
Top of stack

So I don't know if this is such a good combination. But if you just play it for EOT-actions then it will be fine.

8  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: 3rd Place with Meandeck Bob/Gush Control – The 2011 Vintage Championship on: August 10, 2011, 04:50:39 am
Congrats to another T8 at Champs!

It's nice to see those two cards combined (BOB, Gush), but the concept is not as new as you say. there was Ilja Berkof back in 2010 who've made a deck with 4 Bob, 4 Gush, 4 Drain, 4 Ritual. http://morphling.de/printview.php?c=1365&d=2 maybe he should get some credits  Wink

9  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: First place at Bloomsburg TPG #6 on: June 27, 2011, 10:12:08 am
Congrats on your win! A nice report.
I'm really happy you successfully tried the deck. I'm one of the creators, the brother of Jonas Bischof, and have played the deck for a long time now. (2x BOM and some smaller tournaments in Switzerland).

Your report doesnt really reflect this, but your Remora got me pretty hard in game 2 which was why you were able to slowly kill me out with Painter beats.

I missed this also in the report, what was with those remoras? I think they are a strong piece of the deck. How they performed?

Have you played the same cards? What would you change?

My brother is abroad for the next few months, I try to contact him.

Again congrats!

Regards,
Benjamin Bischof

So, here I'm again with my Gush analysis. I've already done this for the months of October and November. So I did it again for the months December and January. I hope you enjoy.

To recall: 01.10.2010 – 30.11.2010:
28 tournaments, 18 tournaments with at least one Gush.dec in the T8.

Alcobendas 09.10.2010
Yokohama 09.10.2010

So 120 T8 deck lists are available and from those there were 26 (21.67%) which have at least 1 Gush main. 25 decks (20.83%) are running 4 Gush.

I will only look at two types of Gush.dec this time as from the others we do not have statistically relevant numbers.

1.   Spanish-Gushstorm (14 decks)
2.   Gush-Oath (5 decks)
-----------------------------------------------

For the others, if your interessted, you can look at the decklists, and make a comparision on your own.
3.   Grow (2 decks)
http://morphling.de/printview.php?c=1373&d=4
http://morphling.de/printview.php?c=1377&d=7
4.   Cobra (1 deck)
http://morphling.de/printview.php?c=1379&d=7
5.   Almost Blue (1 deck)
http://morphling.de/printview.php?c=1383&d=1
6.   Diverse (2 decks)
http://morphling.de/printview.php?c=1381&d=6
http://morphling.de/printview.php?c=1380&d=6

So here we go:

1.   Spanish-Gushstorm

14 (56%) played a Storm deck with EtW and/or Tendrils. The average place in T8 of those decks is 4.3th

4 of 14 (28.57%) played in the finals and 2 (14.29%) had won the tournament.

1.1 About the manabase:
21.43% played 15/10 (land / solomoxen & crypt, vault, petal) 14.29% played 15/07 (land / solomoxen)
07.14% played 16/08 (land / lomoxen & crypt, petal)
07.14% played 16/06 (land / solomoxen, without pearl)
07.14% played 16/06 (land / solomoxen & crypt without pearl, without ruby)
07.14% played 15/11 (land / solomoxen & crypt, petal, vault, opal)
07.14% played 15/09 (land / solomoxen & crypt, petal)
07.14% played 15/06 (land/ lomoxen without pearl)
07.14% played 14/08 (land / solomoxen & crypt, petal, without pearl)
07.14% played 14/07 (land / lomoxen & crypt, petal, without pearl)

I will share a list which is built out of the data with the most often played cards:

1.2 Spanish-Gushstorm

1 Black Lotus
1 Lotus Petal (64.29%)
1 Mana Crypt (71.43%)
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Pearl (57.14%)
1 Mox Ruby (92.86%)
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Sol Ring (78.57%)

1 Island
1 Snow-covered Island
1 Tropical Island
2 Volcanic Island
3 Underground Sea
6 Fetch
1 Tolarian Academy / Library of Alexandria (both 42.86%)

1 Ancestral Recall
1 Brainstorm
1 Ponder (57.14%)
3 Preordain (78.57% ran at least 1, average number is 2.6)
4 Gush

1 Timetwister (50%)
1 Gifts Ungiven (91.33%)
1 Jace, the Mind Sculptor (71.43%, average 0.9)

1 Demonic Tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Merchant Scroll
1 Mystical Tutor

1 Fastbond
1 Regrowth (71.43%)
1 Time Walk
1 Yawgmoth's Will

1 Tendrils of Agony (85.71%)
1 Empty the Warrens (57.14%, average's 0.7)

4 Force of Will
3 Mana Drain (85.71%, average's 2.8)
3 Spell Pierce / Duress (*see explanation below)
1 Hurkyl's Recall (85.71%, average's 1.1)
1 Repeal (50%, average's 1.3)
1 Fire / Ice (57.14%, average's 0.9)

*As I only look for cards with 50% or higher, it would leave us with 3 slots open. I would suggest either Spell Pierce or Duress due to the highest remaining %. (Pierce 42.86%, average's 1.3, Duress 35.71%, average's 1.1; toghether they would've 78.57, average's 2.4).

1.3 Other cards that were played:

Imperial Seal (35.71%)
Chain of Vapor (35.71%)
Tinker (35.71%)
Mana Vault (28.57%)
Sensei's Divining Top (28.57%)
Mindbreak Trap (28.57%)
Fact or Fiction (28.57%)
Rebuild (28.57%)
Time Vault (21.42%)
Voltaic Key (21.42%)
Echoing Truth (21.42%)
Myr Battlesphere (14.29%)
Darksteel Collossus (14.29%)
Mox Opal
Nihil Spellbomb
Vendillion Clique
Lightning Bolt
Thirst for Knowledge
Viashino Heretic
Trygon Predator
Frantic Search
Future Sight
Sphinx oft he Steel Winds
Misdirection

1.4 Conclusion:

If we would look at the generic list of the 01.10.2010 – 31.11.2010 period, there are the following changes to this one:

- Mana Vault
- Sensei's Divining Top
- Chain of Vapor
- Repeal
- Rebuild

+ Fetch
+ Preordain
+ 3 Spell Pierce / Duress

Cards which are now less played than in Oct.-Nov.:
Ponder
Timetwister
Hurkyl's Recall
Fire / Ice
Cards which are now more played than in Oct.-Nov.: Preordain
Jace, the Mind Sculptor
Regrowth
Library of Alexandria
Tinker / Bot

And then we've also the above mentioned changes, some left and had to make space for others. Tinker is more played but is still far away to be a must inclusion.
I think it's very interessting to see how preordain is raising over repeal in January. The decks started with at least 2-3 Repeal, now they don't play them any more but play with 4 Preordain. And that in Spain  Wink

2.   Gush-Oath

5 (20%) played a Oath deck with Tidespout Tyrant and/or Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. One of these decks played instead of Tyrant a Sphinx and Terastodon. The average place in T8 of those decks is 5th.

1 of 5 (20%) played in the finals.

2.1 About the manabase:
60% played 16/8 (land / solomoxen & petal)*
20% played 19/8 (land / solomoxen & crypt)
20% played 15/7 (land / solomoxen)

*all three decks had Mana Crypt in the SB.

I will share a list, which is built out of the data's with the most played cards:

2.2 Tyrant Oath

1 Black Lotus
1 Lotus Petal (60%)
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Sol Ring

4 Forbidden Orchard
5 Fetch
1 Island
2 Tropical Island
3 Underground Sea
1 Volcanic Island (80%)

1 Ancestral Recall
1 Brainstorm
1 Ponder (60%)
3 Preordain (80%, average's 2.6)
4 Gush

2 Jace, the Mind Sculptor (80%, average's 1.6)
2 Tidespout Tyrannt (80%, average's 1.4)

1 Demonic Tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Merchant Scroll
1 Imperial Seal / Mystical Tutor (both 40%)*

1 Fastbond
1 Krosan Reclamation (80%)
4 Oath of Druids
1 Brain Freeze (60%)
1 Flash of Insight (60%)
1 Time Walk
1 Yawgmoth's Will (80%) hellyea, there is a list which don't run Y-will…

4 Force of Will
3 Thoughtseize / Spell Pierce (80%, average's 2.6 / 40%, average's 1)*
1 Hurkyl's Recall / Nature's Claim (both 40%)*

*As I only look for cards with 50% or higher, it would leave us with 3 slots open.I would suggest:
- 3. Thoughtseize due to the highest remaining %. (Pierce 40%, average's 1,  Thoughtseize 80%, average's 2.2; toghether they would've an average of 3.2).
- Imperial Seal / Mystical Tutor (both 40%, toghether 80%)
- Hurkyl's Recall / Nature's Claim (both 40%, toghether 80%)

2.3 Other cards that were played:

Mana Drain (40%)
Emrakul, the Aeons Torn (40%)
Mana Crypt (additional 60% ins SB)
Time Vault
Voltaic Key
Mindbreak Trap
Tezzeret
Tinker
Sphinx of the Steel Wind
Terastodon
Sensei's Divining Top
Duress
Tendril's of Agony
Chain of Vapor
Show and Tell
Tolarian Academy

2.4 Conclusion:

We have not so many data's yet to compare this on a high level. I've expected more Tyrant-Oath in T8. And the builds are all very similar. But hey in this two months they made 5 t8. (there would be also a 6. with some combo-mode around of fastbond, crucible, zuran orb, witness but as it only run 3 Gush, I didn't count it for this analysis).

Sum: 01.10.2010 – 31.01.2011
43 tournaments, 32 tournaments with at least one Gush.dec in the T8.

So 344 T8 deck lists are available in Total and from those there were 55 (15.99%) which have at least 1 Gush main. 50 decks (14.53%) are running 4 Gush.

08.70% played 14/07 (land / lomoxen & crypt, petal, without pearl)
04.35% played 16/08 (land / lomoxen & crypt, petal)
04.35% played 16/07 (land / lomoxen & crypt)
04.35% played 16/06 (land / solomoxen & crypt, without pearl & ruby)
04.35% played 16/06 (land / solomoxen & crypt without pearl)
04.35% played 15/09 (land / solomoxen & crypt, petal)
04.35% played 15/06 (land / solomoxen, without pearl)
04.35% played 14/08 (land / solomoxen & crypt, petal, without pearl)

I will share a generic list which is built out of the data with the most played cards:

Thirst for Knowledge

Future Sight
Misdirection
Trygon Predator
Lightning Bolt
Viashino Heretic
Mox Opal
Sphinx of the Steel Wind
Nihil Spellbomb

1.4 Conclusion

The deck looks very similar to the deck of the other comparisons. I think this is a very good list. That's the core of what Gush.dec plays and should be at least be a starter-kit to build these decks. It's a democratic gushlist. What's played the most, will get a voice. Of course there are different metae and the tournaments haven't got the same number of participants but that's allright, therefore you have those 23 cards above which didn't make the cut over 50%. Some of them are just trys I guess  but others are metacalls.

But something we can say: Tinker is not needed in this kind of build neither is TV/VK. (but you can play it if you want)
One list: http://morphling.de/printview.php?c=1372&d=1 even won a 80player tournament with only 1 Tendrils main!! But hey, he played also a Heretic as a second win condition!  Wink congrats for this Mr. Langira.

2.   Grow

10 (20%) played a Grow deck with Dryad or Goyf. The average place in T8 of those decks is 4.1th
2 of 10 (20%) played in the finals and both won the tournament.

2.1 About the manabase:
70% played 14/05 (land / lomoxen, without pearl )
10% played 16/04 (land / lomoxen, without pearl & ruby )
10% played 15/05 (land / lomoxen, without pearl)
10% played 14/06 (land / lomoxen)

I will share a generic list which is built out of the data with the most played cards:

2.2 Grow-A-Dryad

Black Lotus
Mox Emerald
Mox Jet
Mox Ruby (90%)
Mox Sapphire

1 Island*
1 Volcanic Island
2 Tropical Island
3 Underground Sea
7 Fetch

1 Ancestral Recall
1 Brainstorm
1 Ponder
4 Preordain (average's 3.7)

1 Demonic Tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor (90%)
1 Merchant Scroll
1 Mystical Tutor (90%)

1 Fastbond
1 Time Walk
1 Tinker (70%)
1 Yawgmoth's Will

4 Force of Will
1 Misdirection (60%)
4 Spell Pierce (90%, average's 3.5)
4 Thoughtseize (90%, average's 3.4)**
1 Hurkyl's Recall (70%)
1 Lightning Bolt (40%, average's 1)

4 Quirion Dryad (80%, average's 3.2)***
2 Trygon Predator (90%, average's 2.3)
1 Sphinx of the Steel Wind (50%)

*  In the SB there are a second Island and a Forest
** As Duress also has an average of 0.4
*** As Tarmogoyf also has an average of 0.7

2.3 Other cards that were played:

Regrowth (30%)
Tendrils of Agony (30%)
Mana Drain (20%, average's 0.4)
Tarmogoyf (20%, 0.7)
Ancient Grudge (20%, average's 0.4)
Psychatog (20%, average's 0.3)
Nature's Claim (20%)
Duress (10%, average's 0.4)
Mox Pearl
Vendilion Clique
Berserk
Jace, the Mind Sculptor
Gastly Demise
Inkwell Leviathan
Myr Battlesphere
Rebuild

2.4 Conclusion

So, that deck hasn't changed much in the last four months. Either it's  the only way to play Grow right now or hmm, no I think it's the first reason. One question which is brainstorming in my head is, if we could exclude the Trygons and maybe Bolt for 3 Null Rod. Which is very good against Metalworker, Hellkite, Karn, Trike, Top, TV/Key.
As MUD has such a good way to deal with our flying friend. And it's a lot easier to cast than Trygon. Think about it.

3.   Cobra Gush

4 (8%) played a Cobra deck with Empty and/or Tendrils. The average place in T8 of those decks is 4.8th

1 of 4 (25%) played in the finals, it hasn't won the tournament.

5.   Almost Blue

3 (6%) played an Almost Blue with Brainfreeze. The average place in T8 of those decks is 2.3th.

2 of 3 (66.67%) played in the finals, 1 (33.33) had won the tournament.

http://morphling.de/printview.php?c=1347&d=4
http://morphling.de/printview.php?c=1383&d=1

6.   Diverse

5 (10%) played a deck which I don't want to put into one of the categories because they are so different. But I would also like to show them. The average place in T8 of those decks is 5.6th.

Sorry for necroing... But this deck have 63 maincards? 19 lands? no yawgmoth's will?

I just need to be sure... I'm working again for the statistics about Gush and would like to know if this deck really not runned Y-Will and 19 lands, because it seems so ... unusual? (it's the only 4xGush.dec out of 50 which doesn't run Ywill)

After boarding, I run a package of 2 Hurkyl's, 1 Rebuild, 2 Ancient Grudge, 1 Chain, 3 Repeal, 1 Engineered Explosives, 1 Pithing Needle and 2 Lightning Bolt.

Yeah this isn't bad or anything.  The problem isn't what your set-up here is, the problem is that you *need* to resolve a Hurkyl's Recall in order to win, because there is no alternate route to victory outside of the storm mechanic.  Tendrils does nothing by itself, Hurkyls does nothing by itself, but Tinker often wins by itself.

Yea but it buys so so much time and it is very hard to fight against such a diversed hate. And the chance to have a hurkyl is a lot bigger than tinker. And you have still to win with the robot... But if it is good for you, then go for it. I still not like it at the moment. Also just a little empty will give you so much time for your setup. But as I stated out through the analysis, they can also get t8 without tinker...

Quote
... I suppose it is better than having a completely dead card, but Repeal on Bob is not a spectacular play at all - especially since it means we are giving up something else.

Yes it is better than having a completely death card... Like a robot... or time vault. But that is my point of view.

The issue has been talked about for quite a while.

Is the power of Vault+Key worth the fact that one of the cards doesn't do anything by itself?

In certain decklists, V+k can be a good addition. In this gush shell, I think it´s not needed. I am not saying I will never play V+K, but not for now when there are so many good (blue) cards to  play with Very Happy. Furthermore, you don´t want your opponent´s bouncers, artifact destruction, null rod to interfere with you, right? As I commented with Tinker, I like to have a slight edge with this kind of things (no tinker bot, no v+k) producing dead draws for your opponent. Or even get named tinker with a Meddling Mage against me or playing with someone who kept the artifact destruction/bouncers waiting for the Vault/bot to come down. You make it harder for hate decks to side against you as they don´t exactly know what you are playing.

Finally, not playing with V+K forces you to play better, as you need to "work" to get the victory. Storm combo decks are not always linear (there are some regular sequences of action, or plays, but the paths to victory are almost endless, as the way to play a single play can lead to a wide variety of results) and that´s something I like. The satisfaction you get once you finish a tournament where you have fighted for your points to the death and won through a sequences of difficult plays is priceless. I think V+K has stolen this feeling to a certain point from some players. However, it´s perfectly understandable that some people prefer to "just win" Smile

that is one of the best explanation I've had heard for a long time about the discussion if we should play tv/key or not. Smile and I can totally agree. I love to work hard for the win and be on the way of fizzling and be able to turn around to win. I will explain some more and also show another decklist next week. Im snowboarding the next few days...

Thx you very much, I really appreciate your feedback and I miss your analysis! I've had some problems to state out clearly the important things. Through this I learned a lot what you had for a work! I hope you enjoyed it.
15  Eternal Formats / Blue-Based Control / Re: The State of Gush on: December 08, 2010, 10:09:35 am
Do you play Tinker?
No I don't play Tinker.

I don't think the bounce approach is good, at least right now.  Cards like Repeal and Chain of Vapor aren't good for me against Workshops.  If I were aiming to defeat a Workshop opponent, why would I include those cards in my deck?
I have to disagree, I think the bounce approach is good. (It went for 13 Top8 in the last 2 months). I've tested a lot against traditional Staxx and also "modern" MUD builds. It's good against chalice and welder, and the CoV is at least a time walk if you face a golem or a sphere. I doesn't say they made the match, but they helps also. After boarding, I run a package of 2 Hurkyl's, 1 Rebuild, 2 Ancient Grudge, 1 Chain, 3 Repeal, 1 Engineered Explosives, 1 Pithing Needle and 2 Lightning Bolt. This works very very well for me. The friends of mine, which have a lot experience with Shop.dec, also the Swiss Vintage Champion 2009, despaired cause I have had an answer to everything. But I don't want to push through that package, for me it just worked.

Furthermore, none of the bounce spells are good against other blue decks.  If my opponent is drawing cards, what is my Hurkyl's Recall going to do?  What does my Chain of Vapor do?  Repeal is a can trip, but we're playing Vintage and can do so much better.
Yes, that’s right. But I would say this is only in the Mirror because against a blue deck which have also creatures like Cobra, Bob, Welder they are good again. You described very nice why Gush is that good, because it is an advantage and you spend less mana than your opponent. I think in cases where you bounce a BoB in example, there is a similar situation.
Me 1 Turn: land go
He 1: land, mox, bob
Me 2: land, mox, repeal
He turn: land, bob
Me turn 3: me Gush into …
He 3: draw 1 card of bob

Now he has spent four mana to play bob and draw the first card in turn 3. I've spend one mana less to bounce it but draw a card in turn 2 and two cards of Gush in turn three.
I maybe haven't describe this situation very well but I hope you understand what I mean.
And with Gushes, Repeals it's very easy to reach a good storm count in a cheap way.

If I include Tinker and a Robot in my deck, I do not need to include any of the above cards or anything like them.  What are your thoughts on this?

I don't feel good If I draw Into Robot while Gushing. I see the point that it may be easier in a lot of games with Tinker, but in others I really don't like it. (those 13 Gush bounce storm decks which made t8, none of them played tinker.) But if you feel comfortable with it, go for it. Finally we all have to decide our own way.

So that's said, I've analyzed all Gush deck which made T8 since we have our Gush back. Enjoy!
(And please forgive me my imperfect English; I also hope I haven't made any errors. If anyone is interested, I made an excel-file with every deck and every card listed also from the sideboard, which I haven't considered jet. Just write an PM and I will send this list.)

The state of Gush, since the unrestriction…

First of all there are some facts.

There were 28 tournaments, at least morphling.de says so, and in 18 of those at least one Gush.dec was in the T8.

Ann Arbor 02.10.2010
Mol 03.10.2010
Alcobendas 09.10.2010
Yokohama 09.10.2010
Madrid 11.10.2010
Lindenhurst 17.10.2010
La Habra 17.10.2010
Selden 23.10.2010
Badalona 23.10.2010
Bloomsburg 30.10.2010
Bochum 06.11.2010
Durham 14.11.2010
Macerata 14.11.2010
Lloret de Mar 20.11.2010
San Jose 21.11.2010
Bloomsburg 27.11.2010
Mol 28.11.2010
Darmstadt 28.11.2010

So 224 T8 deck lists are available and from those there were 29 (12.95%) which have at least 1 Gush main. 25 decks (11.15%) are running 4 Gush.

Those 25 decks, I will concentrate only on decks which are playing 4 Gush, those can be divided in the following types:

1.   "Grow"
8 decks (32%) played with a grow-plan. The average place in T8 of those decks is 4th.

They have either Dryad or Tarmogoyf and almost all of them are also running some Trygon Predators. 5 (62.5%) of those 8 decks also run Sphinx of the Steel Winds, two (25%) are using Psychatog and one (12.5%) play with Vedilion Clique.

The manabase is quite similar in all those decks:

62.5% played 14/5 (land/lomoxen without pearl)
12.5% played 14/6 (land/lomoxen)
12.5% played 15/5 (land/lomoxen witout pearl)
12.5% played 16/4 (land/lomoxen without pearl and ruby)

I will show up a list in which each card is compared with the other lists.

1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Ruby (87.5%)
1 Mox Sapphire

7 Fetch (average 6.75)
3 Underground Sea (average 3.125)
2 Tropical Island
1 Volcanic Island (average 1.375)
1 Island (average 1.125)

1 Ancestral Recall
1 Brainstorm
1 Ponder
4 Preordain (75% run 4, average is 3.625)
4 Gush

4 Force of Will
1 Misdirection (50% play with MisD)
3 Spell Pierce (75% run 4, average is 3.375)
4 Thoughtseize (75% run 4, average is 3.75)

1 Hurkyl's Recall
2 Lightning Bolt (50% played with 2-3, average is 1.25)

1 Mystical Tutor (87.5%)
1 Merchant Scroll
1 Vampiric Tutor (87.5%)
1 Demonic Tutor

1 Fastbond
1 Time Walk
1 Tinker (62.5%)
1 Yawgmoth's Will

4 Quirion Dryad (75% run 4, 2 played with Goyf)
2 Trygon Predator (87.5% played with Predator, average is1.875)
1 Sphinx of the Steel Winds (62.5% played this guy)

So in conclusion, this list looks very similar to menendian's grow-list. I think the most people have taken his build like a starter kit and moved from there on. The only changes here are; - 1 Spell Pierce, - 1 Trygon Predator, + 2 Lightning Bolt

Other cards which are played:

Regrowth (37.5%)
Psychatog (25%)
Mana Drain (25%)
Nature's Claim
Ancient Grudge
Berserk
Vendilion Clique
Jace, the Mindsculptor
Tendrils of Agony

So I would maybe cut the Trygon, because of the current meta with the rising of Metalworker, Duplicant, Triskelion and Steel Hellkite. Therefore I would add 2 Ancient Grudge in the main.

2.   "Bounce Storm"
13 (52%) played a bounce based Storm deck. The average place in T8 of those decks is 3.8th

None of them used Tinker. They won with Tendrils and Empty the Warrens or with Brainfreeze.

About the manabase:
38.5% played 15/10 (land / solomoxen & crypt, vault, petal)
23% played 15/7 (land / lomoxen & crypt)
7.5% played 14/9 (land / solomoxen & crypt, petal)
7.5% played 14/9/4 (land / solomoxen & crypt, petal / Dark Ritual)
7.5% played 13/10 (land/ solomoxen & crypt, vault, petal)
7.5% played 16/7 (land/ lomoxen & crypt)
7.5% played 14/10 (land / solomoxen & crypt, vault, petal)

Also here I will share a list which is built out of the data's with the most played cards.

1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mana Crypt
1 Sol Ring (69.25% played SR)
1 Mana Vault (53.85 played MV)
1 Lotus Petal (69.25% played LP)

5 Fetch (average 5.46)
3 Underground Sea (average 2.92)
1 Tropical Island (average 1.30)
2 Volcanic Island (69.25% played with VI, average is 2.07)
2 Island (average is 2.23)
1 Tolarian Academy (61% played with TA)

1 Ancestral Recall
1 Brainstorm
1 Ponder (61% played with Ponder)
2 Preordain (61% played with at least 2 Preordain, average is 1.55)
1 Sensei's Divining Top (46.15% played SDT)
4 Gush
1 Gifts Ungiven (92.30% played with GU)
1 Jace, the Mind Sculptor (30.75% played with JtMS)
1 Timetwister (84.60% played TT)

4 Force of Will
3 Mana Drain (84.60% played at least 2 MD, average is 2.23)

1 Hurkyl's Recall
1 Chain of Vapor (76.90% played COV)
2 Repeal (76.90% played Repeal, average is 2.30)
1 Rebuild (53.85% played Rebuild)

1 Fire / Ice (69.25% played F/I, average is1.30)

1 Mystical Tutor
1 Merchant Scroll
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Demonic Tutor

1 Fastbond
1 Time Walk
1 Yawgmoth's Will
1 Regrowth (61.55% played Regrowth)

1 Tendrils of Agony (84.60% played ToA)
1 Empty the Warrens (61.55% played EtW)

So I think the most lists are based on the lists of either Rubén González or Guillem Ragull.

Other cards that were played:
Mindbreak Trap (30.75%)
Spell Pierce (30.75%)
Thoughtseize / Duress (23.1%)
Mind's Desire (23.1%)
Fact or Fiction (23.1%)
Brainfreeze (15.40%)
Library of Alexandria
Dark Ritual
See Beyond
Doomsday
Necropotence
Mind Twist
Vedalken Archmage
Vendilion Clique
Tormod's Crypt

As you see, there were three cards with 30.75%, I take Jace here because it is a 4cmc like Fact in this slot. Together they have enough % to be considered. But I personally doesn't like Jace in Gush.dec because of the NonBo… I would either run Mindbreak Trap or Lightning Bolt.

3.   "Creature Storm"
4 (16%) played a Creature based Storm deck. The average place in T8 of those decks is 3.5th

There are 4 decks which played with creatures (which aren't "Grow") like Lotus Cobra and Dark Confidant. 75% of those played with Lotus Cobra, 25% with Dark Confidant. Two of three of the Cobra.dec are running Myr Battlesphere. And three of those decks played Mind's Desire. Three of also had also at least 3 Dark Ritual. And all of them go for a Necropotence.

The manabase:

25% run 14/9/4 (land / solomoxen & Crypt, Vault & Dark Ritual)
25% run 16/7 (land / solomoxen & Crypt)
25% run 14/9/3 (land / solomoxen & Crypt, Lotus Petal & Dark Ritual)
25% run 15/9/4 (land / soloxoxen & Crypt, Vault & Dark Ritual)

Also here I will share a list which is built out of the data's with the most played cards.

1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mana Crypt
1 Sol Ring (75% played with SR)

7 Fetch (average is 6, because the non-cobra list only run 4)
3 Underground Sea
2 Tropical Island
2 Island

3 Dark Ritual (75% played with DR, average is 2.75)

1 Ancestral Recall
1 Brainstorm
1 Ponder (75% played with Ponder)
4 Gush

1 Necropotence

4 Force of Will

1 Hurkyl's Recall

1 Mystical Tutor (75% played with MT)
1 Merchant Scroll
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Demonic Tutor

1 Fastbond
1 Time Walk (75% played with TW)
1 Yawgmoth's Will

1 Tendrils of Agony
1 Mind's Desire (75% played MD)

4 Lotus Cobra (75% played 4, average is 3)

Those are 51 cards, which let us with 9 slots open…

The following cards were also considered:

50%
Mana Vault
Library of Alexandria
Preordain (average is 0.75)
Gifts Ungiven
Jace, the Mind Sculptor (average 1.5)
Yawgmoth's Bargain
Chain of Vapor
Nature's Claim
Tinker / Myr Battlesphere
Regrowth

25%
Lotus Petal
Tolarian Academy
Tundra
Volcanic Island
Swamp
Forest
Timetwister
Sensei's Divining Top
Misdirection
Thoughtseize (average is 0.5)
Mana Drain (average is 1)
Dark Confidant (average is 1)
Time Vault / Voltaic Key
Imperial Seal
Empty the Warrens

I would maybe add those 9 cards:
1 Fetch
3 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
1 Gifts Ungiven
1 Tinker
1 Myr Battlesphere
1 Chain of Vapor
1 Timetwister

So as we see here, we can't show up with finally list as there are only 4 decks from this type… Maybe it isn't as good as the others but the average T8 place is the highest here. But I think that isn't saying much. And those decks also have some different route to go but all play very low counter.

4.   And last but not least a list compared with of all 25 decks:
25 (100%) played a GUSH deck. The average place in T8 of those decks is 3.85th

1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Ruby (96% played with MR)
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Pearl (72% played with Mox Pearl)
1 Mana Crypt (68% played with MC)

6 Fetch
3 Underground Sea
2 Tropical Island (average is 1.65)
2 Volcanic Island (average is 2.5)
1 Island
1 Snow-covered Island

1 Ancestral Recall
1 Brainstorm
1 Ponder (80% played with Ponder)
3 Preordain (72% played with Preordain, average is 2.16)
4 Gush
1 Gifts Ungiven (56% played with GU)
1 Timetwister (48% played with TT)

4 Force of Will
3 Spell Pierce (44% played SP, but also 44% played Thoughtseize, both have an average of 1.56)
3 Mana Drain (56% played with MD, average is 2.65)

1 Hurkyl's Recall
1 Repeal (40% played with Repeal, average is 1.2)
1 Lightning Bolt (56% played with Lightning Bolt or Fire // Ice, average is 1.08)

1 Mystical Tutor (92% played with MT)
1 Merchant Scroll
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Demonic Tutor

1 Fastbond
1 Regrowth (52% played with Regrowth)
1 Yawgmoth's Will

1 Tendrils of Agony (64% played with ToA)
1 Empty the Warrens (36% played with EtW)

4 Quirion Dryad (32% played with QD)

Here Sol Ring should be inclouded because 48% played him. But in this deck he isn't as good, so I cutted it for a 3. Preordain even its average is only 2.16.

I could have wrote a lot more but I think that is enough for the moment. I've also some ideas for a GushPainter, Tyrant Oath and have a finished Remora-Gush-Painter (which will be good if there are more Gush.dec but not in the current meta)

17  Eternal Formats / Blue-Based Control / Re: The State of Gush on: December 03, 2010, 03:46:32 am
Thx for the interesting read. Sounds great.

I played around with gush a while ago and loved Life from the Loam. I would gush, top, use loam to get back fetchlands, top a few more times seeing new top 3's and eventually use the top to get a gush. Then use gush to draw top and  dredge into loam. I had a full graveyard for yawgmoth's will and never missed a land drop.
My beef with gush is that if I have an unrestricted card and can tutor for a singleton, I would rather those be vault and key than gush and fastbond. I don't see gush as the future of time vault, and I feel time vault is a better combo 90% of the time.

But Gushbond isn't a combo, it's an engine which allows you to find/assemble your combo like Vault/Key or Stormkill. And i.e if you have gush in hand and a tutor but no components of Vault/Key, I would highly prefer search Fastbond or Ancestral Recall then a combopiece...

btt: because of the MUD matchup, I think a good way to defeat it is to run MB bounces cause they will also allow you to storm out a Empty (which is also a house in this matchup) and SB 2 Ancient Grudge and an other bounce.

I play at the moment with a build which is based on a deck from Guillem Ragull (Spain) who made several t8 with GushStorm. He plays with main bounce like this:

3 Repeal
1 Chain of Vapor
1 Hurkyl's Recall
1 Rebuild

and as kill Empty and Tendrils or 2x Brainfreeze. I think this is so good, because it is helping you to assemble the needed storm count and can also help you handle with Bob/Cobra/Hate-Bears and ... MUD.
With Gush as a "free" spell and Repeal as a "free" spell, it's so easy to reach enough storm with less resources. (I mean the traditional TPS also run Chain, Hurkyl's, Rebuild at least for the same purposes)

I play also with 2 Lightning Bolt main with helps a lot against Bob/Cobra/Hate-Bears/Jace and ... Golem. But what you don't have to forget, if your are going to storm into a Tendrils, a Bolt deals 5 dmg for just  {R}. Do not underestimate the value of Bolt against MUD(Golem) it's really demoralizing if you bolt them the Golems, bounce and grudge them the threads all the time...

I use a SB like this:

4 Leyline
2 Yixlid Jailer
1 Engineered Explosives
1 Pithing Needle
2 Ancient Grudge
1 Hurkyl's Recall
2 Red Elemental Blast
1 Perish
1 Pyroclasm

I've tested alot against MUD, Ichorid, Noble Fish, UBx Controll and the Mirror. I've hadn't almost no problem against the first three mentioned. Against MUD, which I think is the worst matchup for Gush.dec, Postboard is very in your favor. You just need good timing. Also against Bob/Jace controll I have a good feeling. The Mirror is always tricky and I think if you expect a lot Gush.dec, you should better play the brainfreeze version, as It wins easier against them then the Empty/Tendrils version.

If Guillem Ragull read this, I would be interesting in his thoughts about the State of Gush. But I have to say this version is very strong and I'm very happy with this list. But understand the deck and know what lines of play your opponents will do is very important and it isn't as easy to play Gush.dec as it was in the Golden Ages. But it is still one of the most "nice and entertaining deck to play"

But also Highlander needs some spells with low CMC... I've still some hopes that there will also be nice cards for Vintage&Legacy. Otherwise they could also be legal for standart ect. because they also don't use those overcosted cards... Or do I miss something?

20  Eternal Formats / Blue-Based Control / Re: [Deck] 17 lands cobra on: November 17, 2010, 03:33:50 am
Without any testing of the deck, just a theoretical question.

Have you thought about adding red and make following changes.

- 1 Thwart
- 4 Spell Pierce
- 1 Merchant Scroll
- 1 Compulsive Research
- 1 Island
- 1 Tropical Island

+ 2 Mana Drain
+ 2 Red Elemental Blast
+ 1 Pyroblast
+ 1 Timetwister
+ 1 Wheel of Fortune
+ 2 Volcanic Island

With your plan to play exploration asap and play additional lands, you will have twister/wheel online reliably on turn 2. You could refresh your hand. Also nice to end the game mostly on the spot with a coatl out. +7/7 for 2 {U}/ {R}. with the possibility to play more gush and other draw.

I like mana drain very much if you play with cobra cause the fact, that you only need a fetch out to play drain. REB > Spell Pierce, since it's a hardcounter IF it's blue.

What do you think about? As I stated above, I had not tested against other decks. Just brainstorming.

Another card, which came up in my mind: Wind of Change. Allows you to make some tricks, like first turn land, exploration, land, wind of change, put your 3 cards back into library and ancestral recall. Your opponent have to take a new hand if its bad or not. also late game with coatl can be nice. But this is a two edge sword, thats clear. but maybe you could test this once. I also will try.

thank you very much, I hope it's going to be also as huge as deckcheck.

just as addition, there is also DeckBase.net which was made by deckstats.net

So there will be more then just one database. Maybe they could work together, (just a thought)

Now with Mox Opal, isn't there any chance to make Master Transmuter works? Workshop, Opal, Transmuter on t1 seems nice.

25  Eternal Formats / Global Vintage Tournament Reports and Results / Re: [Madrid 9/10/2010] Eternal Weekend 2010 Vintage Main Event on: October 19, 2010, 05:37:50 am
I am the organizer of the Eternal Weekend events. In order to not disrupt the event or the players, I don't play my own events. That way I can take care for them to go as well and smoothly as possible. I won the Monday's Vintage All Stars, an invitation.only event for the best Vintage players of Spain. Lists will come out this week.

What I can tell is that the new Dark Tezz(Jace)Cast absolutely wins against Gush Decks, because out of 8 rounds, 6 I got paired against Gush-X Decks and JaceCast ony lost two games, and not in the same round.

Allright, then I understand why there was no Tezzcast. Wink I'm really interested how your list will look like.
I think it will give another "decktype" to play in the current meta. It's very nice to see how it has changed in this month.

For the question about Fire / Ice, I think it's very nice. Cause there were ~40 decks which played with creature, which are affected by Fire. It can buy Gush.dec some valuable turns to prepare "going off". (and in some situation, after a small empty, you can just fire off those dmg to the player)

BoM, Ovino and Eternal Weekend are now the sanctioned Vintage events with the highest assistance, aren't they?

And all of them in Europe, nice to see that.  Wink

This lists represent then Vintage Post Restrictions. Aren't they interesting to discuss?

They are really interesting, but like Cane said:
Glad to see Gush storm is wrecking shit everywhere!

I would like to ask, where your decklist is??  Wink
27  Eternal Formats / Creative / Re: 8 Gush GAT? on: October 13, 2010, 04:14:31 am
I would consider also Sol Ring/Crypt, because you want "bigmana" and it helps to assemble morphcosts, bigger twists, more cobra first turn, faster jace... also i would look for petal>pearl, cause drain first turn, cobra...

Maybe you should add some Pierce, otherwise you maybe get problems in the first 1-3 turns.

Against what have you tested it allready?

Can Brassman's list be viewed anywhere or just in his article? (which hopefully will include this list)

"Thus far, this is the most “broken” of the Gush decks I've seen in terms of skewing toward raw power. It uses the combination of Fastbond, Gush, and Lotus Cobra to do really broken things, usually involving Yawgmoth's Will and the storm mechanic. The use of Jace with Gush lets you power into some insane turns, even if the overall casting cost in this deck is relatively high.

In one game against this deck on 10/2, my opponent had the following sequence of plays on turn 1:

Black Lotus, sacrifice to add GGG, play Lotus Cobra, play Fastbond, play Polluted Delta (add B to pool), fetch for Underground Seas (add B to pool), tap Underground Sea (BBB in pool), play Dark Ritual (BBBBB in pool), play Demonic Tutor, play Necropotence. Draw a new hand and pass turn."

I'm not sure who did this to you but a Demonic Tutor for Will ends the game.   Will with no mana floating replay fetch land add black crack add black BB floating, replay lotus cracked for black
BBBBB floating recast ritual BBBBBBB floating DT for tendrils win.

I didn't say that it was the optimal sequence of plays, just that it is what my opponent did on turn one  Very Happy

Which isn't bad at all  Wink

Those Fishies...  Sad

But you didn't played BP, otherwise you wouldn't draw too much mana... Wink

What kind of list did you run?
