Eternal Formats / General Strategy Discussion / Re: Major Rules Changes Announced!!!
|
on: June 15, 2009, 09:03:13 pm

In addition to that there are also many things that a player must know about Chess that isn't a rule nor intuitive and yet is severely important. There aren't rules that state a value on Chess pieces, but there are general values. However, I've played and watched hundreds of games where Pawns are worth more than Rooks. Not to mention you can buy books that tell you the way International Grandmasters play out games to like the 25th move just because there is always a "best" line of play even if one can't see it, especially when it comes to openings. Now these may not be rules but they're certainly things that you absolutely NEED to know or you'll just lose. Not to mention adapting your game plan due to time constraints, ect. Essentially the "learn how to play in 30 minutes" is the casual players who use whatever rules they want to. I can learn how to pull a trigger in 3 seconds. Does that make me a sharpshooter? What if I buy a candy bar shipped in from Japan to my local store, does that mean I understand international commerce? You can't simply say somebody knows how to do something just because they have the physical ability to do it. Removing the stack from combat damage won't help idiots understand the massively complex interactions in MTG that are required to play in tournaments, which is supposedly the whole point for these changes. Just like teaching an idiot how to push a pawn forward doesn't mean they'll be ready to play in Chess tournaments
By dumbing down the rules you're actually creating more situations where idiots that don't know the rules/complex interactions will lose for reasons other than strategic choices. Its not like combat damage using the stack was holding back all those MTG geniuses who just "didn't know the rules as good as you did." What happens if one of those idiots plays against Ichorid? They would go to time in the first upkeep Ichorid got. God forbid they face a Dragon deck or somebody casts Chains of Mephistopheles. By eliminating stepping stones between something like "play 1 land per turn" and "heres how Ichorid works" you're not helping these idiots at all.
Your constant use of the term idiot suggests that you're not really interested in seeing this game's player's base grow. Also, I sincerely doubt you're as smart as you think you are. **EDIT** In terms of growing a player base, the attitudes of existing tournament players in any game are probably more important then whatever rules are in place.

My draw suite is 4 serum vision, 1 ponder, 1 brainstorm, 2 lat nam legacy. Seems to be working alot better then impulse IMO....thoughts?
Ancestral Recall maybe? Impulse is much better then serum vision since digs deeper and lets you keep Negate mana up (You can use it end of opponents turn). Also, when you absolutely have to get a piece *now* serum vision is awful.

Did you consider running Rebuild instead of Rushing River as your 3cc bounce spell?
Does the benefit or running 2x Cephalid Coliseum outweigh the early game liability of running additional non-basics?
And this maybe is a little too nitpicky but does the second misdirection and the extra land really outperform double cabal ritual?

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: Chrome mox in aggro control

Vintage aggro cannot play chrome mox. The acceleration it provides is not worth the card disadvantage it generates combined with the artifact splash damage you're going to be exposing yourself to in this meta.
The only lines of play where I can see Chrome Mox being useful is when the extra acceleration helps power out T1 Magus or the extra spell helps power a turn Erayo. And then it's gg if you get forced since you are now probably in or close to topdeck mode. The only two aggro decks that I can recall that worked well with Chrome Mox was Goblins, because of Goblin Ringleader, and UG Madness with it's DAs.
This plan seems like you're bending over and asking someone to kick you in the balls from behind and then asking people what was the best way to bend your knees to soften the blow.

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Re: [Premium Article] Insider Trading - Are Proxies Hurting Vintage Tournament Atten

(Coming to this thread late and just gave it a quick scan so I might be repeating someone's points)
First, I'm a casual player who can make time for about two/three tournaments a year. I would have a serious problem with purchasing power now so just based on the level of fun I'm experience with this format post Brainstorm restriction. If we were in a diverse, entertaining format such as pre Brainstorm restriction I could justify the investment as an entertainment expense as an investment.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that this just isn't as much "fun" as it used to be based solely on the restriction of Brainstorm. The format just doesn't feel as tactical/strategic as it once did to me. Opening lines of play seem much more random and it feels like the ability to theory craft seems much diminished. To spend money and make the full switch to being an invested player in the vintage community just doesn't make sense when this isn't something I enjoy.
Has anyone consider that the lack of attendance has more to do with the state of the format then the lack of personal investment in the community?

I think I know how to judge best myself... fact in point being I don't need most of your affirmations on the greatness of my beck building abilities. Now I know for a fact you're a troll. Or you're just a retard. Either way, Cover blown!

You're planning on using Null Rod to stymie your opponents and then destroy it yourself so that you can win with the Painter Combo? For serious? Null Rods work best with creature kill conditions since Null Rod doesn't step on their toes. You're also running Blue without the standard Blue suite. (AR,BS,TW,Ponder) Why are we not running power either. 10 Proxies aren't the standard where you play?
Also, I'm not really interested in decks that "may not 1st a tournament but it has the basic necessities to produce a fight." I doubt that I'm the only one.
Maybe I'm just being a stickler but this idea seems awful and probably doesn't even warrant testing.

So if mike makes money good for him. The point is we all know what we are playing for weeks in advance. If you are not in the prizes don't play.
I think that's the point. I choose not to make the drive and participate in these events when the prize support is poor in relation to the number of players participating. I guess it's alot like pot odds in poker. If I estimate my chances of making money during one of these tournaments at 8-1 and the cost is $50 (Gas, Tolls & Entry) then I need a prize of $400 to break even on the eight times I participate in. While I'll chalk up some of the lost profit to just entertainment expense I have a very hard time justifying making the trip for less then half of my break even point. ((Workshop+Bazaar)%2=~$175) Does Mike miss my attendance revenue? I'm sure he does. Does Mike think there's many more players like me who choose not to attend because of medicore payouts? That's the question.

If you are going to play Oath then King Oath (Hellkite) is the best version out there. But unless you are King I wouldn't plan on seeing many top 8s. If you want to win and enjoy playing Control Combo decks, then play Tezz.
Yeah I agree with this to a certain extent. Suggesting that Oath is a suboptimal control combo deck is correct. However, King's Oath plays like a tuned machine where it's only objectives are to: survive until Oath hits, get Oath on the table as fast as possible and protect the win. That's nowhere near "Control Combo". Also, many T8's are not out of the question given that Oath has such huge strategic advantage over common vintage decks. The choice of creature just comes down to what you think provides the most likely chance of winning. I believe that Spout provides a better chance at securing the win then Plat does. Spout screws with your opponent the turn it drops, it's not an artifact, it can be pitched to FoW and it wins a turn sooner then Plat does. In what matchups does Oath have where Plat is strictly better then Spout? Are there any matchups where the opposing deck just scoops to Oath/Trinketed Plat? EDIT: I also had not considered being able to use the Oath trigger in response to Pact trigger. My bad.

Getting to play Pacts as a protection measure with an oathed up Plat doesn't seem good enough to overcome the inability of Pact to help force through the initial Oath.

all i got to say is how do you prepare/defend against wipe away?
You side in SSS against fish. Otherwise you just play through it with Lat Nam's, return it to library with TFK/Oath-GB or Scroll Rack. EDIT: Also if you went aggro in the beginning and got an early Spout there's a chance you can just keep them off double blue. Either way Tide>>>>>Plat was my point.

Perhaps Wayne can give us a tourney report.
Okay. I made the deck seven hours before the tournament. Didn't test or goldfish. Made horrible card choices and ripped like a fiend several times through the course of the afternoon. Better lucky then good? Also, all this discussion about my "choices" is rather amusing. Have you put my version through workstation and tried gold fishing it. Oh my god is it awful.
