I thought Martell's commentary this week was excellent. I disagree with his thoughts about some of the relative strengths of cards and decks in the format, but he does an amazing job of communicating how well he thinks the game. I hope he stays engaged in the tournament and does more commentary despite his record through the first set.

Back when 4 trinisphere was legal I won a game against someone playing stax who went turn one 3 sphere turn 2 crucible, wasteland. I managed to get enough artifact mana down to play an eon hub cutting off his other lock pieces and then I used welder and jesters cap to strip all his his creatures away and he scooped.

I really enjoyed this last set of games, though I thought it poor form that Tom flaked as commentator of the final match, and that the commentators kept complaining about Stephen's slow play.
Is there any way to get Rich or Stephen to serve as a commentator in future rounds? I like that the tournament features a mix of Vintage and non-Vintage pros, but the commentary would be more valuable if at least one of the people had intimate knowledge of the format.
The lack of familiarity with the format in the comments seemed really obvious to me in Steve's match this week. There were a couple times that the commentators just didn't seem to understand the situation. That said I think that overall the matches have been really fun to watch and the commentators are a big part of that.

This guy seemed cool when I first saw it, except It only gets Worse not better the more Vintage leans torwards creature based decks. Has no evasion. The tokens are forced to block or attack when they first enter the battlefield. Doesnt provide disruption. In a mono white deck full of mana denial, you should not need this guy to finish off your opponent. Why not just play Jotun Grunt? Comes down sooner and may help out with some gy hate against decks with crucible, yawgmoths will, and dredge. Just sayin'
Grunt has a bunch of weak points this guy does not share. Mono white is typically running main board rest in peace so that removed grunt right there. Grunt can also be spell snared. The thing with mono white is you may have a board full of guys but they are guys you can't trade off in combat or your opponent gets an avenue to come back with. Have i beater like this is the same reason decks run Tarmogoyf even though it does not play control or disruption at all, its a finisher that can win the game on its own and is bigger than everything else for cheap. That's exactly what this guy is in a different way for a different deck. Good points, still though. I like this guy, I just dont see running more than two, maybe in place of two Porcelain Legionaire I have in my white trash list. Dunno yet. You wouldn't find a way to play both? I feel like I'd rather cast legionaire on 1-2 paying 2 life and this guy on 2-3 if I was trying to curve out.

Interesting note as I'm listening, and I might add more later; but the Vintage Championship was at least 75 players larger than the Paris Bazaar of Moxen in Paris that was going on at the same time.
at roughly 55:00, it was cutting out, but did you claim you developed Pitch Long? I would highly dispute that factor, as it was 100% Team GWS and Eric Becker that developed it in 2006.
I think steve was saying he worked out a modern version with burning wishes and it was a bit unclear when he was going back and forth between his prep for champs and the history of the format.

How does a card that makes Jace nearly irrelevant, is a moat against MUD, and opens up a Blue devotion deck in Vintage not seem surreal to everyone else? This card is too good, period.
Porcelain Legionnaire dies to Triskelion and Duplicant. This does not.
How is a single creature a moat? moat stops ALL creatures without flying....this blocks and kills things one at a time. if your opponent drops this, you slow your roll and wait for reinforcements/additional lock parts.

I think the chess clock and the interface will make most decks unplayable. For example, Mtgo forces you to select colors every time you tap a dual even when you're casting an artifact. I've lost many matches to getting clocked with vitu ghazi guildmage in play because it takes 30 seconds or a minute to activate it in mtgo compared to 1 second live. Eventually I had to stop drafting him despite the fact that he is amazing in draft.with so many choices in a vintage game I just think it is going to be horribly format warping. Playing stax, for example, will be a mess.

If I wanted to make the deck more comboish I would play arcbound crusher or desciple of the vault, but desciple can make the mana tough since he isnt blue or green. Crusher is pretty beastly for building up counters though. He also gets +1/+1 off your opponent's artifacts, which can counteract the disadvantage of chamber giving you opponent dudes against creature decks. He also tramples.

How a judge would fix it could vary from situation to situation. As such, it's impossible to offer you any definitive answer here. Perhaps the judge would say he cast the bolt on the face-up Angel, perhaps the judge would say he tried to do something he couldn't and rewind it. The specific details of each situation mean the results might be different. (And no, this is not an invitation to follow up by attempting to provide what you consider to be every relevant detail to get an answer to this specific situation. For all the relevant details to be available, the judge needs to be there, and how one specific situation would be handled isn't a discussion that helps anyone, since the next situation won't be exactly the same.) Hypotheticals aside, is this the complete set of possible resolutions? 1. The angel is bolted. 2. The game state is rewound. 3. 1 OR 2, but with some sort of punitive action taken. also, assuming this is the full set, how does the REL impact your decision about which way to go? Are you more likely to go with 1 in competitive REL events?

To me the question is whether it is ok to not announce a trigger that happens until significantly later in order to gain an advantage.
I don't think your opponent passing priority once is considering significantly later. But the trigger is on the stack regardless of it you announce it. The missed part is about resolving it, not putting it on the stack. http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/feature/233A triggered ability that changes the rules of the game. This case includes triggered abilities like the one Pyreheart Wolf has. It changes the rules governing some aspect of the game, often attacking and blocking. You are expected to mention the ability when it first has an effect, and you must prevent opponents from taking any resulting illegal actions. For example, if you attack with Pyreheart Wolf and your opponent attempts to block with one creature, you must inform your opponent that that is an illegal block, and blockers must be redeclared. it's significant because it matters, not because of how much time it took. in this instance you are intentionally misrepresenting the game state to gain an advantage.

I felt the play was perfectly fine. It was a mindgame, and it made the game more interesting. No problem with it at all.
My only concern is checking that the play is legal. I think it is, but I'm not 100% on that. So long as it is, I've no problem with it whatsoever.
the second part of this is exactly where my issue with the new rules is. Assuming this is illegal (I believe chalice triggers when you cast the sphere so you can't pass priority then suddenly "remember" your trigger): If you forgot....no penalty....if you did it as a tactical mind game... immediate dq. I think it puts too much pressure on judges to make that determination.

this whole conversation is a very good example, in my mind anyway, of why the new trigger rules are bad. that said, they're the rules so we have to deal. Yes, Steve should have known better than to step in. That said, triggers that don't have an optional clause shouldn't be optional. Then you put judges in the position of having to decide if someone missed a confidant trigger or mana crypt trigger by accident or on purpose. This type of thing happens all the time. It shouldn't, but this is the rules text on chalice: Chalice of the Void enters the battlefield with X charge counters on it. Whenever a player casts a spell with converted mana cost equal to the number of charge counters on Chalice of the Void, counter that spell. someone explain to me how "whenever a player casts a spell..." actually means "whenever a player casts a spell, unless its your opponent, and you forget or don't want it to happen and are able to convince a judge you just forgot, or if its you and you don't want it countered, but you can convince a judge you forgot..." it says "whenever" it should mean "whenever" this isn't like banding or trample where it's a keyword with a special meaning. it should happen whenever it's supposed to happen automatically @Lotushead: I think your play toes the line, but stays inside of it. I've never been a big fan of the mind game aspect of it though.

To me it is pretty clear that the Gush-Bond engine is the way to abuse this guy and not something like Skullclamp that is slow and cumbersome. Playing off what Brian Demars came up with in his article I altered a couple of things to make this (my list opts for Mind's Desire for example instead of the 3rd regrowth)
Pyro-Gro
Land (16): 4 Scalding Tarn 4 Misty Rainforest 2 Volcanic Island 3 Tropical Island 2 Underground Sea 1 Island
Artifacts (5): 1 Black Lotus 1 Mox Sapphire 1 Mox Ruby 1 Mox Emerald 1 Mox Jet
Enchantments (2): 1 Fastbond 1 Necropotence
Planeswalkers (1): 1 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
Creatures (7): 4 Young Pyromancer 3 Lotus Cobra
Instants (19): 4 Force Of Will 4 Gush 3 Mental Misstep 2 Spell Pierce 1 Ancestral Recall 1 Brainstorm 1 Mystical Tutor 1 Vampiric Tutor 1 Ancient Grudge 1 Hurkyl’s Recall
Sorceries (10): 1 Ponder 1 Merchant Scroll 1 Time Walk 1 Demonic Tutor 2 Regrowth 1 Yawgmoth’s Will 1 Timetwister 1 Tendrils Of Agony 1 Mind’s Desire
Sideboard 2 Ancient Grudge 2 Dismember 1 Red Elemental Blast 1 Cabal Therapy 1 Thoughtseize 1 Lightning Bolt 4 Leyline of the Void 3 Nihil Spellbomb
This is a very rough sketch, but I think it has the most potential for breaking of any shell out there for this guy. Why would you run 14 creatures in a deck where you are trying to get Pyromancer triggers? That just seems super silly to me.
-Storm
I'm not sure I'd rather have necropotence and desire than 2x skullclamp though. I feel like the strength of pyromancer in some matches is that you can play 1 spell per turn and still generate a landslide of advantage. not playing clamp in favor of playing additional combo cards seems like a mistake in that context.

Wait, wait, wait, wait... so if you have a Cage and a Welder in play, then use the welder targeting an artifact in play and an artifact creature in the graveyard, the exchange still tries to resolve as much as possible? The artifact in play goes bye-bye, and the creature stays in the yard?
exchanges don't work like that. if part of the exchange fails the whole exchange gets unwound. it's not like a normal target.Learn something new everyday

that's definitely true about repeal, and I didn't play any control decks either. It's more of a feeling that it doesn't suit my play style. every time it came up I was just like "oh...and my hand contains this other card..." it just felt out of place in my thought process, so I could be playing it wrong or just inclined towards lines that it doesn't really promote.
Bogden said he was the 2 seed, but it seemed odd to me as well. I just barely avoided taking a game loss after running to the store so I'm not sure what the seeding was and just believed his story.
