Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Why do newbs get so excited about Morphling?
|
on: August 09, 2005, 07:42:48 pm
|
Will this phenomenon ever end about Morphling?
It is played in no format (well T4 it's good), you have to have six mana to play it and keep it alive for one turn, and I think it inspires more creamed shorts by newbs than 6 pages full of foil Llanowar Elves. Also they always speak with blissfull glee rolling down the sides of their mouth about how it will probably be reprinted in the next set (Morphling is on the reserve list correct?).
Is there an answer?
What other cards irritate you in this manner?

Neutral Ground in New York City has a weekly Legacy tournament on Tuesdays @ 4PM There is no fee for entry but unfortunatley no prize as well, but it's good practice. It's not worth coming from far away but if you live in NYC and you are interested in Legacy (I think there's probably 3 of us so far) come check it out. Just figured I would get the word out. FYI - www.neutralground.com, 122 West 26th Street. 4th fl. NY, NY 10001 just in case you live in NYC and have never been there.

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Re: 6th edition rules and triggered abilities
|
on: August 09, 2005, 07:04:16 pm

I understand that Ophidian is not a artifact so therefore it shouldn't matter.
But it does - Ophidian's ability at time of release was a activated ability and now while I'm not going to look through all erreta (not yet at least) on all cards prior to Weatherlight and possibly more depending on templating, that Null Rod is functionally weaker than it's supposed to be.
My theory is that Null Rod should now actually read:
Players can’t play artifacts’ activated and optional triggered abilities.
Perhaps Null Rod was intended to stop all triggered abilities. This would take some research but perhaps someone here knows about the transition and change in rules about optional triggered abilities (the category I would place Ophidian's original wording in) and required triggered abilities.

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / 6th edition rules and triggered abilities - Null Rod too weak?
|
on: August 08, 2005, 07:50:53 pm
|
I was thinking about Null Rod today and at the time it was released it I think it used to be able to stop more abilities.
Take Ophidian for example (it was first card I could think of like this):
Original Text: 0: Draw a card. Ophidian deals no combat damage this turn. Use this ability only if Ophidian is attacking and unblocked and only once each turn.
Oracle Text: Whenever Ophidian attacks and isn’t blocked, you may draw a card. If you do, Ophidian deals no combat damage this turn.
My point is that some triggered abilities at Null Rod's release were done as activated abilities which Null Rod could stop, after 6th edition rules rolled out (I presume) the awkward wordings were changed however Null Rod's power was reduced.
This is probably an old debate but Wizard's has gone on the record of saying they errata cards to their original intention but here is not the case, I think they originally wanted Null Rod stronger by not allowing triggered abilities.
Does anyone know about this or has any one ever thought about this?

I think Gifts loses something when you play without Strip/Synod/Crucible. I have a feeling that's what Ugo played it for. I don't have a recomendation for the slot however I agree it's a weak card in your build.
I think Greaves will get better as more people experiement with WTF as a counter to Jitte.

I can see the problem with Standstill comparing WTF to Gay/R Fish. With Gay/R you can draw into a daze/force and work your board position w/ Kai and Spiketail to counter a key spell. However as Jacob said earlier, Force is there so you don't lose on first turn, and standstill just draws into more cards you may or may not need.
If you play Spiketail or Kai then you can support Standstill, if you don't try Brainstorm and perhaps Tinker/DSC.
I think its a great deck BTW, nice job everyone!

Vintage Community Discussion / Rules Q&A / Oath Problems
|
on: June 05, 2005, 09:54:16 pm
|
I need to have this cleared up
There is Oath of Druids in play (only 1) and my opponent controls more creatures than me. I have 1 creature in my graveyard and no others in the deck.
I Oath at the beginning of my upkeep and reveal Gaea's Blessing. Since I reveal no creatures I reshuffle my deck (now empty) and graveyard. Now here's where the dispute comes in.
I say that's it and I draw a card for my draw phase however a surrounding player as well as my opponent says I'm still supposed to Oath until I find a creature (a more favorable situation for me anyway).
Who is right?

Eternal Formats / Miscellaneous / Arcane Laboratory vs. Sphere of Resistance (sideboard discussion)
|
on: June 02, 2005, 07:05:15 pm
|
Having taken Oath to 2 Waterbury tournaments and having played several local tournaments I started to ponder the usefullness of Arcane Laboratory in the sideboard. In all the games I've played I've never faced TPS, 2 Land Belcher, Meandeck Tendrills or some random storm combo deck. Now perhaps I'm fortunate but I think Oath has a favorable match up with these decks out of the box so why do you need Arcane Laboratory?
Rick Shay wrote an article about Intuition Slaver a few months ago and his sideboard featured Sphere of Resistance. I found it to be a interesting alternative to Arcane Laboratory. I believe in the current meta Sphere is possibly a better hoser with Gifts and Storm combo. Lets way the pros and cons.
Sphere: Pros- 2 CC can be easily played on turn 1. All Spells vs Gifts cost one more => Gift is slowed because if its mana intensive nature. The card usefull in multiples generally speaking. Stops Land Grant and slows Dark Ritual.
Cons- Vs. Gifts with Welder can weld it out if you play poorly. Bad vs Rack and Ruin (however it will cost them 4 mana) Not a blue card to ditch to Force. A fine target for Rebuild when TPS is ready to go off.
Arcane Lab: Pros- Almost seals the game vs. Storm combo A blue card to ditch to Force => multiples are not completely useless. There's barely any enchantment hate in the meta (none if it wasn't for Oath) Game vs. Witness/Dragon
Cons- 3 CC is very questionable. Gifts -> Tinker -> DSC = GG, cannot stop this combo. In most instances the card stinks in multiples. Many combo decks can win casting 1 spell a turn. Not game vs. Dragon/Other win.
I think the answer is not black and white on this one. I think it depends on the meta in a given day. I'm sure I missed a few pro's and cons and that why I brought this up; hope this generates at least some discussion. John
Edit: This can apply to any deck that runs Arcane Laboratory, not just Oath

Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Fake Cards?
|

I compared the card to some other cards from unlimited and the same amount of light shines through however, the pattern in the paper is different. Its much clearer than the other unlimiteds I compared it to. The real ones have more of a cloudy appearance, and the jet looks like a piece of paper, however after inspecting the card with a magnifying glass the print texture appears the same.
I'm still not too sure since to me the light test was a big time fail and the bend and print test were passes. I want to send it to PSA for grading however will I be able to remove the card from the holder to play with?
Thanks for the input. John

Vintage Community Discussion / General Community Discussion / Fake Cards?
|
on: March 13, 2005, 10:30:05 am

I recently purchased a Unlimited Mox Jet from Ebay, I'm going to keep the auction link a secret to protect the buyer, and I suspect it could be a fake.
First the seller has a feedback of about 1500 with only 2 negatives in his 5 year span of selling on Ebay. The seller was eligible for free buyer protection as well. And so far the seller has been very cooperative with the sale and me accusing the card of potentially being counterfeit, plus he has already offered a refund as well.
So more about the card. I first suspected it was a fake because it was lighter (weight not color) than the other cards shipped with it to protect the mox. I then compared the card in weight and thickness to other Unlimited power I own and although I don't own a scale the card feels lighter to both my roommate and myself. I eventually did a bend test on the card and fortunately it passed! The only suspect thing in the coloring of the card would be that the letters in the text box are not as bold as the letters on my other unlimited power.
So to simplify here's really what I want to know, are there unlimited cards out there that vary in weight and color. Also are there fakes that pass the bend test as well? Should I try to have PSA authenticate it? If I get it graded how hard is it to take out of the PSA holder?
Thanks in advance for the input. Also I'll be happy to provide some scans if people need to see them, I just have to hook up my scanner. John

That's ok I'm sure most of these websites will cancel our orders since they can't find the card or whatever reason they'll give to jack it up to $200.
Weren't Zodiac Dragons worth about $200 before the oracle update?
