The New Jersey Open 2

Saturday, November 1st 2008 (a.k.a. the weekend prior to States)
PA Convention Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Remember being truly excited about a tournament? When was the last time that was the case? Last May I ran the first "New Jersey Open" at Ron's Comic World. This gave players the chance to practice and prepare for Regionals at a large-scale tournament. With the return of T2 States to North America I have decided now is the time for the New Jersey Open 2! I have booked space at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, so space will not be an issue! Come on out, prepare for States, and have a chance to win some truly insane prizes. There is a new addition of a Type 1 P9 Tournament for a Black Lotus, Time Walk, Bazaar of Baghdad, and a Library of Alexandria.

Vintage Black Lotus Event

Entry Fee: $30
Format: Vintage (Type 1)
Time: Registration 11 AM-12 PM, Tournament starts promptly at Noon.Sanctioning Level: Unsanctioned, 15 proxies allowed.

THE PRIZES!!! (GUARANTEED!!)
1st Prize: Unlimited Black Lotus
2nd Prize: Unlimited Time Walk
3rd Prize: Bazaar of Baghdad
4th Prize: Library of Alexandria
5th-8th Prize: Players will draft from a prize pool based on final swiss standings. The Prize Pool will include (at a minimum) foil Flooded Strand, foil Misdirection, foil Bloodstained Mire, Beta Sol Ring. $50 credit with the dealers is also an option for 5th-8th place players.

Type 2 Main Event

Entry Fee: $25
Format: Standard (Type 2)
Time: Registration 10-11 AM, Tournament starts promptly at 11:00 AM.Sanctioning Level: at least 16k, run at a Competitive REL, decklists required.

THE PRIZES!!! (GUARANTEED!!)
The top 8 will draft their prizes from a pool of the best foil playsets Type 2 has to offer! 1st place will have first pick, 2nd will pick from what remains, and so on. Since Shards of Alara hasn't been previewed in it's entirety yet, I will add foil playsets of any Shards rares that I deem truly awesome once the set has been released!

The Prize Pool:
4x foil Sarkhan Vol
4x foil Mutavault
4x foil Bitterblossom
4x foil Cryptic Command
4x foil Thoughtseize
4x foil Garruk Wildspeaker
4x foil Reflecting Pool
4x foil Chameleon Colossus

9th - 16th will each recieve 1/2 of a Shards of Alara Booster Box

Side Events

We will be running the following 8-man side events throughout the day as the sign ups for them fill up.

Vintage Strategic Planning Side Event:
$15, single elim, 1st place: Strategic Planning

Booster Drafts:
$15, single elim, Pack Prizes, 5-3-2-2.

8 Man Constructed for a Box:

I am still figuring out the details, but am posting this now to hopefully prevent any scheduling conflicts.

Apperently this is an utter crock, the Pittsburgh tournament was posted days prior. Apperently, you did not take the 30 seconds to look at the forums for conflicting tournaments.

I'd like to clear a few things up with everyone.

I have been planning this event for more then a month now.  I checked the Tournament Calender on TMD, there still isn't any mention of any other tournament on November 1st.  I also checked the forums briefly, and stopped looking once i hit tournaments with dates in September, thinking I was hitting the out of date threads.  One of my concerns is the T2 tournament that I'll be running, part of the key being that it is a practice tournament for 2008 states.  Holding the tournament the week prior to states is critical in my mind.  Also, there is a PTQ locally on October 25th (and States on November 8th).  While these events may not detract from a T1 tournament, they would definitely impact the attendance for a T2 tournament of this size.  I booked the space at the convention center in August, and have already put a large deposit on the space.  I advertised the tournament on MTGSalvation on September 4th, so if you want to go by whose event was posted online first, it was mine.  I don't expect you to check every forum and site for conflicts, but that seems to be what you expected of me.  Hopefully we can work something out and both of our tournaments will be a success.  Hope to see everyone there!

Thanks,

-Nick Coss

I'm happy to answer any questions anyone may have.  If you'd like, email or IM me, or I can provide my cell phone # via PM.

I would like to start off when an apology to the community, I did not intend for my post to come off as harsh and rude as it inheintly does. I was having a very bad day and took the brunt of my frustration out within that response. Again, my extreme apologies.

-In terms of the conflicting dates, as tournament organizers, we spend much time and much devotion keeping a format from disappearing. Vintage, unlike Standard or limited, has a much smaller community and a player base that is much older in age and generally willing to travel for events. Tournanament organizers work very hard to secure space and prize and often have very little (and often no) financial gain to show for it. We work very hard to keep from stepping on one another's toes. Obviously, we have a situation where we have conflicting dates. Nick, I'm sure you would agree that this is frustrating from both perspectives. If we run our event, it may impact your attendance slightly. Likewise, if you run yours it will impact our attendance slightly. I know for a fact, that I have regulars to my events that would LOVE to go to your tournament, but their devotion is keeping them here. I'm sure you have the same.  In light of the fact that you have invested so much into your venue and prize support, (Which is phenomanal BTW) I will try to arrange another date (hopefully, not conflicting with any other scheduled events.)
If we are not able to rearrange the dates,  I will contact you privately and  perhaps we can brainstorm a solution.

I have decided now is the time for the New Jersey Open 2! I have booked space at the Pennsylvania Convention Center

NJ Open in Pennsylvania...That's like having a sports team in another state and calling it another state's name.  Oh wait - you say there's the New York Giants somewhere?

I've had the misfortune of a free flight to PT Berlin, so sadly will be absent.  I'll see if I can send Harriet and will do what I can to publicise locally.  And maybe send John to bring the Blakedown.

There will be sign-ups for T2, Extended, Vintage, and Shards Booster Draft!  The format is determined by what people want to play!  Whenever a pod fills up, it starts and a new sign-up sheet is started.  Should be fun, and let us all play whatever format we want at that moment.

AND YES! I have added a playset of foil Tezzeret, the Seeker to the prize for the T2 event.  I also have 2 extra Tezzerets, so I think they may go out as 2nd prize for the Strategic Planning Events (Vintage playable baby!!)

Should be awesome!

I totally agree, specially when some of us would like to come in from out of state.

Thanks Brian for posting the address.

I'm really looking forward to this, the event is shaping up to be a blast!  I am probably going to be running an EDH tournament later in the day (from multiple requests) and will probably be running some form of a free team-based trivia game (for fun and some random cool prizes)
